Let’s talk about foot and leg cramps at night, also known as nocturnal cramps. Nocturnal cramps can be very painful and even prevent you from sleeping.
Unfortunately, the cause of nocturnal cramps is unknown. But, a potential cause could be an electrolyte imbalance-a deficiency in electrolytes, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, or sodium. But, sometimes, people will take electrolytes without noticing much of a difference.
Another potential cause could be a problem with your pH. If your body is too alkaline, you won’t be able to transport minerals properly. This can create a lot of different problems, including cramping. In this case, you could try just acidifying the body.
Potential remedies for leg and foot cramps at night:
    1. Quinine (the natural version: cinchona officinalis, or tonic water)
    2. Yellow mustard (1 tbsp. before bed)
    3. Apple cider vinegar (2 tbsp. mixed in water about an hour before bed)

I also had night cramps in my calf muscles, before I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic. After cutting out sugar and most carbs I have not had cramps. But I suspect it could also be related to dehydration and or electrolytes.

Oh wow, as a pre-diabetic, I always associated my toe cramps with sugar consumption, particularly beers. Wine doesn't affect me. But I read here that it can be due to carbs too, I didn't connect the dots. If course, carbs & sugar should be avoided if we are (pre) diabetic.

I just so happened to eat 3 slices of cake and ice cream after 12 am before bed and I woke up with cramps in both my legs all the way up my thighs and down to my toes. Only the Good God my Lord could save me and give me peace to get thru it. I'm super sore this morning but I'm glad to know I'll get through it and what not to eat sugar before bed. Also I'm going to make some tea with apple cider vinegar. Thank you and Dr.

I am finding the same thing happening to me when I eat alot of sugar and starches. I also get severe knee pain(extreme throbbing pain in my right knee). I am getting upper left leg deep cramps almost feeling like a deep vein thrombosis and the pain lingers for days. Since I broke my keto and intermittent fasting this is happening when I binge in these foods.

I suffered with foot cramps for many years, every time I straightened my leg when laying down.
Four years ago an Ayurvedic doctor explained that it was a lack of magnesium in my diet. He explained that many vegetables today do not contain all of the nutrients advertised due to soil erosion and modern farming practices. So although on a healthy diet, I could still be lacking. I started to supplement my diet with additional magnesium and have not suffered cramps since.

I've had leg cramps since I was a child. My parents used to call them "charlie horses". I've learned to eat pickles or drink pickle juice to prevent them after a workout. ACV works as well since pickle juice is just ACV.

Omg me to! It's been happening to me frequently as of late and I used to make sure to take potassium after a workout but bananas no longer work for me and thought I should at least get a supplement.
What's interesting about pickle juice is that I think there's actual mustard seed in the mix (I vaguely remember from wanting to make my own pickles lol). I will certainly try these suggestions! Thanks y'all! 😁

      Yes. It's the vinegar.
Eating enough veggies keeps the problem away. Too much caffeine brings it back
Two ounces of apple cider vinegar diluted in a glass of water tastes terrible but stops the problem in 20 minutes, every time.

Oh my gosh, I’ve had leg cramps almost my whole life, they were so painful, but then in my 50’s I started getting cramps in my inner thighs,
the first time I had no idea what was happening, I literally couldn’t move, I thought about calling for help, but wasn’t sure how anyone could get in the house since I couldn’t move, first episode lasted about 45 minutes. As time went on it was suggested that I needed to take magnesium, which I started to do, seldom have it problems now, but the cramps in my inner thighs were bad enough that they brought me to tears.

The inner thigh cramp is almost as bad as the hamstrings. I know how to stretch hamstrings the second I feel that initial twitch but the inner thigh one is extremely sharp and difficult to stretch out. I've been fighting cramps 24/7 for the past 20 years. I just brush off the calves if they lock up. It's nothing compared to the hammies or inner thighs.

My older Italian born mother (now we live in US) had bad muscle cramps for years. As well as anemia. We tried everything to fix it, it never really worked. After she had a blood transfusion after surgery, her muscle cramps suddenly went away for a long time. Then after a few months they came back. Then the muscle cramps suddenly went away again for several months, the next time she had a blood transfusion, for another surgery, a few years later. I thought to myself, hmmm. I looked up muscle cramps and blood transfusions. I found thalassemia. A common genetic blood disorder, resulting in anemia, common in Mediterranean people. One of the symptoms is muscle cramps. It gets worse with age too. You all might want to ask your doctors about a test. (it is not just in Med people anymore, with all the ethnic mixing we do.) The treatment is blood transfusions, as needed, depending on how severe you have it. Funny I had to diagnose her myself.

I use to suffer cramps like crazy as a child & in my 20's. And then it went away. Watching this, I realized it happened after I went on a serious regimen of supplements in my early 30s, to assist me in a very high stress, long hours job. I've continued that habit for the rest of my life, and fine tuned my supplements as science developed and I got to understand my needs. I only started to focus on my diet much later, but I had never indulged in junk food or substances anyway. Worst things I did was to eat & sleep too little due to a really busy life, and I tended to be slightly underweight a lot of the time ...so thank God for supplements! I also unwittingly did what is now called intermittent fasting, because getting a little extra sleep was way more important to me than breakfast. And I never had time to snack! Over and above that I had an aversion to over medication & seasonal injections, following a pretty sickly childhood. I'm in my 60's now and amazed at how much younger, healthier and more active I am than my peers, in spite of having endured a really high impact life and still being at it. I'm convinced that overall healthy (under!)eating, lying low on substances & proper supplements made all the difference. What you put into your body really is the ultimate key.

We learned from you doctor the ilportance of taking magnesium and potasiom, therefore started taking it. He did not have the cramps unless he stopped taking the vitamines mentioned before.
As we live in Costa Rica, decided to take natural coccunt water and bananas more than the magnesium and potasium supplements. We still do becuase it helps to relax and have a better night sleep. But let s say, 4 days a week take the natural sources and 3 days the pills.

I tend to have leg cramps like this. It starts in the toes, and you can feel your foot stretching forward almost like you're trying to point in a straight line on its own as a result in a way that will usually wake you up. You can try and fight it if you're quick enough and you'll feel your ankle pop as you try to straighten your foot upwards like you would if you were standing upright, and after a little while the muscles that were tensing in your leg will relax but it will hurt, not nearly as badly if you didn't fight it immediately.
Worst part is that the pain you feel will last essentially throughout the next day. Not as bad as when it was cramping, but it's still fairly miserable.
My solution honestly was drastically increasing the amount of electrolytes I drink. I use Ultima electrolyte powder, and will drink around 32 - 64 ounces of the stuff daily and added a magnesium tablet and I haven't head to deal with it in over a year as a result.

And while you're laying that way take the opportunity to also point your arms straight up because it will benefit your upper body just as much as your lower body. Everybody worries about circulation and nobody even thinks about lymphatic fluids. It's the reason why people are puffy.

I work outside in the heat a lot and drink a lot - a LOT - of water, but still get terrible cramps at night especially in my calves, ankles and feet. Limited research into this said one possible cause could be losing a lot of electrolytes through my sweat, which I believe is worse on keto. My deficiency is probably magnesium since that seems to be the hardest electrolyte to get through diet - I consume plenty of sodium, calcium, and potassium.

I have experienced this to the max. I notice that it happens if I have gone for a long walk or bike ride, or other activity - I have extremely flat feet. Something that helps is wearing comfy thick socks to bed - natural fibers only - like wool or cotton. If my feet are warm, I don’t get cramps - even if I kick off the socks in the middle of the night.
A few weeks ago, I started adding a little more magnesium to electrolytes before bed.. no more cramps, and it seems as though the extra magnesium relaxes my body for sleep - been sleeping exponentially better.

I will be following these instructions!
What type of magnesium is best????

Me 60 too. I take magnesium and potasium from GNC for over 2 years since I started Keto and my husband started to have leg cramps. Also eat bananas, avocados, lettuces and fresh cocunut eater. Alternate natural soruce with pills. Problem solved.

I'm 63 and cramps had become more common affecting different areas of my legs and feet lately. Inner thighs too. I had already been taking mag and pot for the past 2 years, as well as extra D3. After listening to the vids re D3, mag, pot, and K2, and how they all work together, I also started K2 a few weeks ago. One docs vid mentioned that calcium in the muscles can cause cramps. After a week the cramps havent been back yet (if K2/mk4 starts to work that fast...?) Elsewise, maybe I'll try the quinine pills.

Dr Berg has videos on eye twitching. Also for electrolytes, best is a balanced formula (Dr Berg’s electrolytes) because magnesium works much better with potassium.

Bananas cause more troubles than they solve because of all the sugar. Avocados have way more potassium and other key nutrients than bananas. However in the case of cramps, best is an electrolytes powder which helps without having to eat.

What about a painful leg/foot cramp emergency that has to be handled NOW and nothing has worked? Put the plug in the bathtub and turn on the hot water. While testing the water with your hands make sure it is as hot as you can take it but not hotter and put your legs under the running water. Massage them and as the tub fills up sit in the tub and work out the cramps. A large basin is good too if available along with a stool to sit on. Alternate: One time I had a cramp in my shoulder and the only thing I had handy was a hammer. It worked!

Two drops of oregano oil under the tongue for 30 seconds followed by a flush of water because oregano oil is strong. This will quickly alleviate an episode.

Hi Dr. Berg, you've helped me on many different topics. My legs, shins and feet are cramping up so bad that I start to cry in the middle of the night. I'm afraid to go to sleep because it hurts so much. Is there a certain Magnesium you would suggest to use? Thank you so much for all that you do.

I buy what's sometimes called Magnesium oil - it's really just LIQUID Mg, not oil, but is has a viscous, oily feel. But it won't stain clothes like oil. Anyway, you can buy it by the gallon, it's not terribly expensive. I rub some on the spot that's cramping, and sometimes on surrounding areas too. It gets absorbed quickly, and works right away to stop the cramp. It's probably best to use it regularly rather than wait till there's a cramp, but sometimes I get behind.
