Just binged this build tonight while looking for information on an SC setup I wanted to do and the detail/commentary/ reactions have just been sublime 👌🙌 so stoked to see how much you're loving it after all that hard work and effort! Good job man, this is truly an underrated channel
I got the same exact model, same colour, same everything except left side steering. I wanted to turbocharge it so badly but this changed my mind. Parts are already in order. Thank you I’m excited!
Was looking forward to this latest episode and delighted to see that everything worked out for you! Really enjoyed following your journey over the last few months. I'm getting close now with my own installation and the thing that's been worrying me most is the idea of excessive noise, so looking forward to your next episode. A proper wolf in sheep's clothing - love it!
Any tips on where to source the Throttle Pulley Adapter on the Inlet side to accept the 2nd cable? I also see that G19 now do a Second Throttle Body Mount for use with their kit - would you recommend that option too? Looking forward to having the same grin on my face as you did ;-)
Thanks Ewan. It finally feels like the effort paid off! Unfortunately the noise was a bit of a bummer but the 2nd throttle has worked wonders. Personally I don't recommend G19s throttle body adaptor. Seems like a bit of an afterthought with no real consideration as to where to mount it. If I were to do the job again I'd source a different inlet and outlet. I'd still use the G19 brackets though as they're 👌🏻
As for the throttle adaptor you can either butcher a pulley off another throttle to create a 'dual' pulley. Or get a 'shapeways adaptor' which is what I did. A mate of mine had one kicking around he didn't need.
@@FastRust Cool thanks - you've done an awesome build and it's inspired me to accelerate my build! I was looking at the Shapeways adapter over the weekend and it looks great! I'd better get my thinking hat on as I was undecided between the G19 Kit and the Salon Motorsport kit but it sounds as if neither has a plug and play throttle body adaptor. More internet searching for me! My supercharger and intercooler are both ready to go - I've only really got the ME221 and injectors to fit over the next couple of weeks and then ready to install!
Yeah he really is. Talked me through loads of stuff he didn't really have to just to help me understand MEITE better. Think I'm going to take the car for a rolling road tune before summer, just so I can get a power graph and satisfy peoples curiosity!
Glad you got to enjoy it in the end Your videos are absolutely top tier content. Extremely helpful and easy to watch and follow Hopefully ill get there in the coming months. Trying to keep the budget down in 2024 isnt the easiest Ive also got a faulty me221 ecu 😅
I’m wanting to do the same myself , just need to sell my slk55 & find a nice nb to convert , just love mx5s they’re such a fun chuckable little car that can surprise many folk , even more so once converted.
Nice one mate great job, just installed the same mp45 unit in mine and it's fantastic, looking to water/meth cool mine soon as its only a stage 1 kit without intercooling but still 150hp and 160trq at the wheels , but it has transformed the car, iv'e had my car 12yrs and i had a turbo on it for a while but didn't like it, the S/C is much nicer and suits the cars dynamics better IMO, feels like iv'e bought a new car lol...........i'll never sell it now in fact i sold my 986 and kept my 5 cos it is better! cheers from NZ...
Thanks Daniel. Totally agree, it has transformed the car. Interesting to hear you prefer the S/C over a turbo - I'm still yet to have a go in a turbo car, but have been offered a ride in one in the near future. Good luck with the water/meth conversion. Think I'm gonna leave mine as is now (engine wise), it's just good, cheap fun! Cheers 👍🏻
I wish I'd found your videos 6 months ago, would have made by own build so much easier. Just completed my own supercharger conversion. I have a 2004 MX5 1.8 vvt mk 2.5, now with an ex mini M45, 15% kavs pully, intercooler, rx8 yellow injectors, ME221, AEM X series wideband, forge recirc BOV, plus remote tuned by Alex Hickson also! What an amazing bloke and so knowledgeable. Very interesting seeing just how similarly your car sounds and appears to drive. I'm running twin throttle bodies and the kit was the cheap 'weld it yourself' one you get on eBay for the conversion. LSD is worth it, I got a Fuji LSD cheap from a breakers and sent it to McNeil engineering in Ireland who specialise in rebuilding them. I'd love to see an update video when you hopefully do one, fantastic series.
Thanks Tom. Amazing you've basically built the same car I have albeit with a few small differences. Fun cars now aren't they? I also have a Torsen to go in which I'm hoping to get round to in the next few months. Update video will be filmed before then 👍🏻
I turbocharged an NB 206 kw ATW, drove it mostly on low boost, hugh boost was crazy Supercharged NC same setup as guys in oz who were getting 190kw, best i got out ofNC was 150 kw. Bit disappointing.
That's pretty cool. Too much noise? Feh. There's an NA MX5 on instagram with an electromagnetic clutch on it and a switch in the cab so he can switch the supercharger on and off at will. Could've gone with something like that. Naturally aspirated for daily driving, BOOOOOOOOOST for fun.
usually on a road car you don't need a better clutch, but usually need an upgraded pressure plate which provides better clamping pressure. That will stop your clutch shudder. I have an Alfa 2.0 156 and this is exactly what i intend to do, rather than Turbo it. I don't want to have to red line the thing before the power kicks in. Slapping a SC in instead gives that feel of an extra two cylinders! Without the extra weight.
I fitted a standard Excedy clutch over winter. Judder has gone and it has no problems with dealing with the extra hp :) Superchargers are great for instant power and throttle response. If that's what you're after you can't go wrong
You're likely fine on the clutch front, I have an M62 at 11psi,and it's 170ftlbs at the wheel, stock 1.8 clutch is meant to be good for 180ftlbs, you are likely safely below that on an M45. One thing that is worth looking into is an ATI damper, mostly because it's one piece with the timing cog adding a lot more strength o the keyway. The stock damper only connects by a few mm on the end and with a manual tensioner on a SC it can work the key and cause it to deform the crank. They're expensive but less so than what a VVT motor costs nowadays.
Thanks for the advice. Noted re clutch and damper. Think I will stick with the stock clutch for now. Interesting about the damper that's the first time I've heard of this issue. I was actually expecting you to say the stock one delaminates and separates into 2 pieces. Not an issue I've heard specifically with the mx5 but the truck has a similar setup and is known to do this. Cheers 👍🏻
Hi thanks for these videos would really appreciate video on second throttle body fitting I have been gathering all the parts required to complete this conversion for my sons mx5
I’m in the US .. but I’ve been wrestling with purchasing a Kraftwerks SC kit for my 08 NC Touring but just thought it might be a bad idea not knowing for sure if it’ll make enough difference to warrant the $4200.00 price tag. This video gets me enthused all over again. Just wish I knew if the Kraftwerks is a good long lasting daily driver or not..
Great job I have been following you since deciding to fit a supercharger and I’m at the same stage before this episode and as you I’m not overly keen on the noise can’t wait for the next episode showing the duel throttle thanks well explained videos try not to leave the next to long before release Cheers 👍👍
Yeah it was a bit of a downer tbh the noise, it ruined the experience for me. I spoke to G19 about it but I don't think they have any intention of revising their inlet, so sadly your only option is to get hold of one from a different kit. Will go into full details in next vid. Cheers 👍🏻
Great series and journey, thanks for sharing your experience. Nice roads, I frequently travel them in my Mk1 turbo, great roads in the area, may be I'll bump into you sometime (not literally). keep up the fantastic content, all the best.
Thanks Dave! Yes some great roads around there and often on them myself as I work on the industrial estate. Will keep an eye out for a mk1. Have you tried the Motorist Cafe yet? Went there for the first time last weekend. Really impressed!

Hi Kyle. Yeah no problem I work less than 5 mins from the Motorist so easy for me to drop by. Working tomorrow I don't know whether you're planning a ride out? Could probably escape for an hour late morning.
Hi Russ Been trying to write back to you but i think the comments were getting deleted as i posted my email on there. Whats your contact details? We can arrange to meet at some point.@@FastRust
Hey James. Been on hol so catching up on comments. Sounds great would be good to compare the performance of the 45 vs 62. I imagine the 62 is more suited to a 1.8 tbh. If you send me an email to teamfastrust@gmail.com we can swap contact details and get something sorted.
Great stuff. If I did the job again I'd get the G19 supercharger brackets but not the outlet and inlet. Purely due to the fact you cannot use 2 throttle bodies with the G19 setup.
I hear this all the time! The products are good but the communication can be hit and miss. I think Doug is in the process of making some trailers for a new business so might be preoccupied with that. Have you tried to call them?
Absolutely loved your series mate, I've decided to take the plunge myself and have gone for an M62 supercharger. What was your 0-60 after installing the supercharger and getting it all tuned? I remember stock you got about 7.7 seconds.
Cheers mate. It was high 7s before the supercharger yeah. Not got round to doing the post supercharger test yet. Tbh it ran out of MOT a few months ago and haven't had chance to get it done. Booked in next week though so 0-60 test will be coming soon.
@@FastRust I went for the ACT with a lightened flywheel. It took a bit of running in & the pedal is now heavy but I know I can rely on it now not slipping. I destroyed the previous standard clutch in months.
Well, this concluded as I suspected! I got a drive in a well sorted r53 mini cooper s last year and I've known since that day that the MX5 with that same charger on it will be an absolute riot. Very interested to hear that your OE clutch is holding up .... That makes a massive difference to build cost for me. It would be interesting to know that power you're putting down now.... I hear anything up to 200 at the wheels is fine for the engine. Right .... Man maths, don't let me down now ..... 😆🤣
Hey John. It's great fun for the money! I would just say if you're doing it as a road car get an inlet/outlet that let's you use a 2nd throttle. G19 parts sadly do not support this. Clutch doing fine, no probs on that front. I am planning to get it to the rolling road later this year so should have an actual bhp figure for you. Similar setups seem to be in the 185 - 200 region. Cheers 👍🏻
Looks like great fun and good value for money. Oh, by the way, your engine is under the bonnet. The hood is that black thing above your head keeping the rain off 🤣
Looking at one of these... Does it have a nice exhaust note too? Or would it need a new exhaust (something sporty that suits the car). I'm just not keen on the looks of the NB and NC.
Mate, I'm watching this video for the third time, and I realized you resemble Gerard Butler, only to remember that Gerard Butler probably knows fuck all about supercharged MX-5's. Sorry but not sorry. I'm still busy with my E30 M50 conversion to being supercharged with an M65 from a Mercedes by first collecting all the bits, definitely already having gotten two second-hand BMW throttle bodies to limit the noise. You inspire me to do it well. Thanks for making these videos.
Maybe later in the year I'll take it to a proper rolling road. For now though I'm gonna enjoy it. Been a long time coming. 0 - 60 test in the pipeline.
Heya, i have the same ecu and the same nbfl 1.6, if you need any footage for testing or collaborating, let me know, i wouldn't mind help ya out, anything really just to make this setup more widely known, and gro aftermarket support for it
I have a 97 miata with everything but ABS. 200k mi. I wish to do what you did. Can you send me a parts list, and where I can get them? Already has positraction
Would love to see an update on this. How has it been to live with? Any problems? Would also love some info on how to do the second throttle body. Great series, well done
Thanks. Update coming in the next few weeks, just need to finish the editing side of things. Car has been fine, no issues. Fitted a new clutch and Torsen LSD over Winter. Hilarious car to drive!
About to supercharge mine thanks to this series! Always wanted a supercharged car! How much is the remote tuning though? I’m guessing not much is changed after the auto tune seeing that its meant to be fairly good?
£130 for a remote tune from Alex (or it was at the time). I'm in the process of filming the next ep now so I'll go into it in more detail. You can't use the auto tune to 'tune' the car once you've fitted the supercharger. It's only designed to make slight changes to an existing map. I used it to tweak the basemap when the car was still NA. If you tried driving the car on a basemap with the supercharger you'd potentially damage the engine because there is no data for when the car is in boost.
@@FastRust Ah nice that's not bad, I'll be contacting him once the car is ready! Doing the conversion in stages as you did seems like the best way, so I will be copying you for a lot of the process haha. Looking forward to the next video!
Hi James - still progressing with my own build and managed to install the ME221 a couple of days ago along with an AEM Wideband sensor. Installed in a similar way to your installation but am having a few tuning issues and trying to rule out possible reasons. My AFR readings match between gauge and ECU but I do see error two messages 1. GND -Short Circuit Int. WB Heater Status 2. GND -Short Circuit Int. WB Sensor Status Int. Did you also see these errors or do I need to try an alternative Earth for the brown Signal earth wire (currently connected through original loom)? Many thanks! PS - still looking forward to hearing more about your dual throttle body set-up!
Hey mate. Good job getting all that installed. I never had any of these issues with the AFR gauge, all I can think is revisit your connections and make sure they're all good. Assuming the stock ECU worked fine that's all I can think. I've had a sensor die recently but that just displayed 4 dashed (----) on the gauge.
@@FastRust Thanks James - I will recheck the connections and may run a new ground and see if that moves me forward! I've also reached out to Alex Hickson as recommended as I think some professional guidance at this stage will go a long way to ensure that the foundations are good! Cheers...
This has been a great series and have been doing my own install since January, lots of ups and downs and false starts. Finally got everything working and nearing a final tune. Just back from tacking it out for a full run but my belt snapped! Followed your set up closely but can I ask which size drive belt, was it 1250? Did you have any issues just wondering if it was too tight ??
Cheers Chris. I was wrong with the 1250, ended up running a 1240 and had to crank it pretty damn tight on the tensioner to stop it slipping. Haven't had an issue with it snapping though.. did it definitely snap? I know they can get thrown off if the pulleys aren't properly aligned.
@@FastRust not sure if it snapped May have slipped then if you are using 1240. I couldn’t find it on the road to check. It was great up to that point. Will give a 1240 a go. Looking forward to seeing how you have done the dual throttle body set up. Haven’t done that with mine yet! Thanks for responding
Okay, most likely chucked the belt rather than snapped it I reckon. Assuming you're using a 15% reduction like me then a 1240 works well. Bit of a squeeze to get it on but then tension up nicely.
Nice job mate 🤙🏻 looks great, what BHP did it make in the end? Your juddering may be an unevenly worm flywheel, when you change clutch check the runout on it and consider getting it resurfaced or you might have the same issue again even with a new clutch!
Cheers 👍🏻 No idea on bhp but intend to take it to a rolling road later this year so will find out then. Had considered that re the clutch. Will check for runout on the flywheel and get it resurfaced if needed.
Mine does around 6.5psi. Boost isn't everything, if I wanted more boost I'd remove the intercooler and get 10+ psi. Wouldn't make as much power though.
@@FastRust yeah just curious, to add on to that question is there a certain reason for going with the 15% reduction instead of a 17% or 19% that’s available?
I went with 15% because it just pushes the charger past its 'max' rpm at 7200 engine rpms. That said people run 17% plus with no issues at all. The other issue with the small pulleys is belt slip. For 17% and smaller upgrading to a 6pk belt is a good idea. But this means new crank pulley and power steering pulley.
Hey, loved the series and great to see it driving! This is something that I would be very keen to do in the future but I haven't been able to figure out the legal side. I understand declaring mods with your insurer ofc but how do you declare a change to the vehicle such as this with the DVLA and do you need to update your emissions band for the sake of MOTs and Tax? Cheers
Hi Mark. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes obviously all mods should be declared to the insurer but you don't need to do anything as far as the DVLA is concerned. If you changed the engine size you 'should' inform them. Like with the Capri when I went from 1.6 to 2.0. Didn't make a difference to tax just log book now says it's a 2 litre.
@@FastRust Ive sent an email through their site. Left a voicemail and have tried after 16:30 to call. They dont seem to want the business as far as im aware. Sigh. It's a very small company, and I think they're preoccupied with making trailers for a new business. I'll email Doug on behalf of you guys to see if I can at least get a response. As far as other kits are concerned you've got BOFI, Garage 42 and TRLane kits as options (although I think TRLane stopped making them so that would have to be 2nd hand)

Hey James. Been on hol so catching up on comments. Sounds great would be good to compare the performance of the 45 vs 62. I imagine the 62 is more suited to a 1.8 tbh. If you send me an email to teamfastrust@gmail.com we can swap contact details and get something sorted.
I'm new to your channel, what a thoughourly decent knowledgeably guy. I'd like to do your conversion to the wife's MK2 NB.
U want it to rip put it on e85 and port the inlet and outlet of the m45 blower and put a smaller pulley on it and dial it in on a other tune
Nice work I’m supercharging my mx5 thanks to your videos just waiting G19 to do the 1.6 kits
Great stuff. If I did the job again I'd get the G19 supercharger brackets but not the outlet and inlet. Purely due to the fact you cannot use 2 throttle bodies with the G19 setup.
I’m want my car to be loud lol
In that case you'll love it!
@@FastRust do you know if g19 are still alive seems very difficult to get a reply from them
I hear this all the time! The products are good but the communication can be hit and miss. I think Doug is in the process of making some trailers for a new business so might be preoccupied with that. Have you tried to call them?
Great car. Nice episodes. Great job. Hope I can find someone in Portugal to help doing this job.
Thankyou! Not tempted to have a go yourself?
Absolutely loved your series mate, I've decided to take the plunge myself and have gone for an M62 supercharger. What was your 0-60 after installing the supercharger and getting it all tuned? I remember stock you got about 7.7 seconds.
Cheers mate. It was high 7s before the supercharger yeah. Not got round to doing the post supercharger test yet. Tbh it ran out of MOT a few months ago and haven't had chance to get it done. Booked in next week though so 0-60 test will be coming soon.
Please put an uprated clutch in. Mine was OK for a little while. If your going to change it anyway, it makes sense. You don't want to do it twice.
I get that. It just doesn't feel like it's bothered by the extra power. Any particular clutch you'd recommend?
@@FastRust I went for the ACT with a lightened flywheel. It took a bit of running in & the pedal is now heavy but I know I can rely on it now not slipping. I destroyed the previous standard clutch in months.
I hear the bofi racing clutch is quite good
Cheers Rob. I'll have a look into them.
The hood is that black thing above your head keeping the rain off 🤣
Ha ha ha. Duly noted! Cheers 👍🏻
Did we miss the video with the new timings to compare vs stock?
Are you not going to take it to the dyno and see how much hp and torque it’s making.
That’ll be interesting
Maybe later in the year I'll take it to a proper rolling road. For now though I'm gonna enjoy it. Been a long time coming. 0 - 60 test in the pipeline.
Heya, i have the same ecu and the same nbfl 1.6, if you need any footage for testing or collaborating, let me know, i wouldn't mind help ya out, anything really just to make this setup more widely known, and gro aftermarket support for it
I have a 97 miata with everything but ABS. 200k mi. I wish to do what you did. Can you send me a parts list, and where I can get them? Already has positraction
Did you keep your ac while doing this
Would love to see an update on this.
@@FastRust when's the update!
th-cam.com/video/UiBD2SbuLnc/w-d-xo.html here!
Do you know what power it makes?
Great to hear. That's what the videos are there for so good luck. Any questions let me know 👍🏻
Hi James - still progressing with my own build and managed to install the ME221 a couple of days ago along with an AEM Wideband sensor.
Yeah I'm a bit behind on the dual throttle body video. Got some personal things going on at mo but will get on with it as soon as I can.
@@FastRust Thanks James - I will recheck the connections and may run a new ground and see if that moves me forward! I've also reached out to Alex Hickson as recommended as I think some professional guidance at this stage will go a long way to ensure that the foundations are good! Cheers...
Any updates? Where’s the car now?
Took it off the road for a few months because other stuff got in the way. Flew through its MOT last week so it's good to go again.
I would like to do the same with a pinto injection :)
Yes good idea. Know a few that have been done. Not been in one though.
Nice one. Did you ever manage to test the 0-60 again?
Cheers. On with it this week if the weather plays ball
how much mpg do you get now with the supercharger?
looking at german forums people say about 10l, is that true?
As always depends how you drive it! But when I use it sensibly for my 60 mile round trip to work it does surprisingly well. I'd say low 30 mpgs.
Did you get a 0-60 time yet?
hi mate just wondering if the reliability has been fine as a daily as id like to do the exact same :)
No issues so far. Does a lot of motorway miles to and from work. Been great 👍🏻
How many horses power?
I own a 1.8 nb and am planning to choose between SC or turbo, how much hp does yours make with the SC?
Fundraising a dyno session if I can raise £420 we'll find out! www.ko-fi.com/fastrust
Still waiting for the 0-60 update
On it! Car ran out of MOT and life stuff got in the way. Flew through MOT last week so it's ready for a rippin
Power?
How mach boost do you run?
Haven't checked the logs but the boost gauge is showing 0.45 bar (6.5psi).
how much boost does this set up run?
@@FastRust that’s great info I appreciate u taking the time can’t wait for the video on the second throttle body
Hi James, Simon here from the Motorist, could I get in touch with you directly?
Hi Simon. Yes sure send me an email teamfastrust@gmail.com and we can swap details from there.
Can anyone even get through to G19 engineering?
You're not the only one to ask this question. Hopefully someone will help out??
@@FastRust
Ive sent an email through their site. Left a voicemail and have tried after 16:30 to call.
They dont seem to want the business as far as im aware.
Maybe someone can help me out as im trying to supercharge my mx5. Looking for a kit to install? Any mx5 good guys out there can help that will be great
