Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.

I really like what you've done. I don't think I have the knowledge you do. My engine is in pieces at a shop and I would like to do it while it's out. Would a body shop understand the process? Perhaps I can get them to wait while I get the cover and do it myself. That's really a difference-maker when you eyeball it.

That's a fantastic restoration ! It's great that you took the time to detail all the interior baffles and splash plates, such thorough work. The end result is amazing - suitable for a Miata Testa Rossa !

I did an almost identical job to a spare cam cover for my 1.8 Mk1 (Same as this one I believe). Only difference is that I went a bit crazy with the cleaning. I ended up cleaning it, Then cooking it in the oven for a couple of hours to bring as much as possible of the remaining oil to the surface, Then used an old steam wallpaper stripper to get it really oil free before sanding and spraying gloss black, Sanding back the lettering with 80 grit for a heavy brushed look, Then several coats of lacquer. I finished it off with a machined alloy oil filler cap. It looked stunning, So I put it safely away in a box in readiness for the next cambelt change........ But before that came around I knackered my back and needed to sell my precious MX5 to get something more spine cossetingly sensible. :(
I kept the collection of upgrades I hadn't got around to fitting for over a year before I realised that my back was never going to be good enough for me to get another MX5, So I sold everything off (That cam cover, A couple of service kits, A reconditioned Torsen type 2 dif, A full set of second hand wishbones that I'd had chemically stripped and powder coated, New chassis braces, + lots of other stuff). I'd been carefully collecting cool bit's to go on that car for over 2 years, Finally selling them all off broke my bloody heart. It felt like a book just finishing mid sentence without actually ending the story. :(
    .............. God, I miss my old MX5. :(

Degreaser and a half an hour in a dishwasher gets rocker covers (and other car/bike parts) 100% clean and shiny without all the elbow grease, not as satisfying as doing it by hand but a lot quicker if you are short on time for the same result. Also if you put a limescale descaler tablet in with it, it can sometimes remove the build up of grime/limescale reducing the need for as much sanding afterwards.
Amazing job by the way! So satisfying seeing the end result after all that hard work.

I've always bought a second hand one and restored that first and then swapped out for the one on the car.. covers you in case anything goes wrong and you can also get some of your money back from selling the surplus one (or restoring the other one as well and possibly hitting a profit! as some people will buy them to save them the hassle!! :) )

Very satisfying to watch. Fast forwarding, no excessive talking or noise, clear steady video, great results. Couple of questions. Was it necessary to rtv the plates back in because I didn't see any old rtv when you took them off? Will the clear coat hold up against engine temperatures? I'll echo someone elses comment below. The only thing hold this back from being perfect was no mention of brand of materials used or measurements. Those details could be added after the fact in the video description. Great job.

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey, Thanks for your comment and suggestions. Im glad you enjoyed the video :). The plates were put back in with RTV as there was a layer on there from the factory, its quite difficult to see on the video. The lacquer will easily stand up to the temps as the bodywork of a black car standing in the summer sun all day gets waaay hotter then a rocker cover and the lacquer holds up just fine in that situation year after year ;)

I didn't even know they made a special tool for butterfly hose clips. I just thought they were designed with normal pliers in mind.

would love to see this be done with an ultrasonic cleaner and some degreasing solution for that, sure it'd be hella expensive, but man it'd look cool

Hey folks, Im loving the warm reception you've given the automotive restoration twist the channel hast taken in the past couple of videos :). With that being said i would love to hear your input into what else you would like to see restored thats linked to to the automotive world whether its random automobilia, a specific car or motorbike part, a vintage automotive tool? etc. All ideas are welcome . And again id like to thank everyone for helping the channel grow and bring you even more content. RRC

Hey, Really Random Channel, I have a question: do you have to install those small plates back? Is it nescesary? Can you run without 'em? I mean like, it should not do enythinh wrong, also less weight. Or it'll damage the engine?

Stanisław Batory Sama renowacja spoko - oczyszczanie, lakierowanie; ) ale tez nie rozumiem silikonowania :) myślałem, że tylko Polska jest przodownikiem silikonu:-) Ale oceniając renowacje duzy plus. Pozdro

If you are going to continue doing these refurbishing projects, and I hope you do, you need to get two pieces of equipment. First a parts cleaner, so you can clean the parts a lot easier. Second a media blaster. That will allow you to prep items and get into very tight corners and such. But you do great work either way/

    • @RRCRestoration

Hey, Thanks very much for your comment and suggestions, If you watch my new videos you will see that i now have a media blaster and i have a new parts washer but just not set up yet ;)

Great video. One of the best ones out there. You could watch this just for the entertainment value alone. I like how you speed up the tedious parts. I just did my Valve cover in 24 minutes. lol
