I’m no expert, but I think you forgot to test the system. You have to grab those rafters, try to shake them loose, and state emphatically “That ain’t going nowhere”. Seriously, thanks for the videos on your shed, can’t wait to see the shop up and running.

You must be a follower of Lumnah Acres as well. He says that with anything tied down, strapped, nailed, screwed or otherwise weighted down.
he did pat the ridge clip twice, and said "nice", that is almost as good.
To remember: use strong drive connector screws; structural screws. I'm an artist, learning sculpture, & use all kinds of materials in out of the ordinary ways, outside traditional building. But I'm learning good practices from such videos, like how a screw is not always just a screw.
Sam, its important to note that when installing these connectors, the screw length is not the same for all holes. The screws on the face of the bracket (what is going straight into the ridge) are 1.5in screws while the ones driven diagonally should be 2.5 inches. Simpson has a great website that has detailed installation instructions which specify how many screws/nails and what sizes you need to achieve the advertised load rating. I have a positive placement gun for hanger install, but prefer the screws as they seem to not make the wood explode when you drive 8 nails in close proximity, although the tradeoff is that screws are slower.
Screws can be the same length, if you nail them is where it needs to be different lengths

Just a note. If you are in a cold climate the ties should be installed on the exterior. If you are installing on a house and the walls are going to be drywalled. The clips will create just a slight amount of condensation during the winter months. This condensation will attract dust/smoke etc. and turn dark. This will show up on your painted walls within the first winter. There will be a dark spot every 16-24” at the tops of your painted walls
Don't think hurricane straps are required up here in Wisconsin .
+1 for being able to experience that moment where you could say, “I knew saving these rafter ties for six years was going to pay off!” So many of us store things and never get to that moment. Thank you for sharing it!
Had a coworker 10 yrs ago, complain about having to install these brackets, hurricane, we live in the pacific north west, a couple years later we had 50-65mph winds, they live much higher elevation, even higher wind gust, they were real happy then to have used the brackets.
I'm pretty sure I'm gonna add them to my metal roof over my patio. Good info

Never used the diamond plates. I have used the twist plates often when I lived down south. It looks like the correct way to put them on to me. Looking forward to seeing more videos on the build.

When I built a chicken shed 12x12, I used gusseted rafters to cut down on the amount of strong ties needed. all I had to do was add in some blocking to keep the rafters spaced correctly and only had to use the hurricane ties on the rafter tails to top plate. The saw fits are open for ventilation and the sheds ben through sustained 80 mph winds with no issues.

Well I kinda glad you did a separate video on this Sam it was very satisfying to watch you put them up all at once...I used screws in mine nearly 40 years ago and they still good I have a few timbers to replace but using screws makes them easier to replace...have a good week...
This was my first time using the screws and I don't expect to ever go back to the nails! :)
those screws are slick. I had to use boxes of N10 nails. Eventually i used a palm nailer. the last time I did those in construction, we had a palm nailer that fed sleeves of the nails. Probably was more expensive, but the speed made up for it.

I’ve always installed them with the ears facing the center of the building. I had honestly never thought to do it the other way. I think with the ears facing out it might make it a bit harder to nail or screw but should still be doable.
One of these days I have to finish one of my ongoing projects. Keep doing what you do and y'all will be done before you know it.
The fins should always face inside of the building. One reason is for the inspection should you need one, but the main one is to keep them out of any potential weather damage. Even zinc coated metal will rust over time if the conditions are right.

Speaking from an Architectural design background, yes there is a preferred mounting direction. It is correct that Simpson states that they can be used on the inside or the outside and facing either way, because the sheer strength of them works in any direction. However, setting that aside, you want to install them on the inside, because then they are better protected from the elements. 👍

Looks like it would be a lot easier to get to those screws that go in the side of the rafters if it’s turned out like you did them rather than trying to get over the plate to drive the screws in. I’m going to be using them today thanks to your video. The wind blew out the side off my barn because it didn’t have anything holding it in place. I never knew about these until I watched your video. Thanks!

Agreed. I can see the need for the ties at the walls but those at the ridge poll? No, sorry. The whole point of a rafter roof like that is t he fact that the rafters pressing against each other is incredibly strong. There's hundreds of roofs out there without those that are fine and will be long after we're gone.
@@martinparmer I can see where you may need them for trusses but rafters don’t need them, I remember when they came out with these and thought what a crock of s$&! Was long before I set trusses and I know that if there is a natural disaster that these will not help you, plenty of proof looking at newly built homes that have been hit .

Well they are not code in Canada and we lose a few communities a year to high winds, tornadoes and hurricanes. They should be code as 'an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.'

Auntie em auntie em I don’t hunk we’re in Kansas anymore. While high winds are possible where you are hurricanes aren’t. The occasional tornado is. Personally if a nader were coming I’d be worried about other things but that’s me. Still I love watching all of this. Nails are better when it comes to sheer force strength but screws are definitely faster and easier and your arms won’t look like Popeyes lol

I've been following this shed build for my project but I didn't see you use these so I checked with a GC YT page I follow & he had a shed build that I watched. He used the diamond bracket in the opposite direction from how you did. His videos didn't say why, I was just assuming that's just how you use them. We used the nails vs the screws because they have a stronger shear strength & we're in florida, don't need to risk things. lol
As to installing the Simpson Ties on the inside or the outside of the wall, Simpson states, on their website, that either side is acceptable. My decision was to install on the outside because the soffit material would hide the ties from view and, there is more rafter material to attach to on the outside of the building wall. My trusses have the truss base on the inside. …..just my humble opinion.

I use plywood gussets for all tha corners, cheaper and stronger than tin.
Gotta be honest. I've been toying with putting the diamond brackets facing the outside. The only thing stopping me is how that would affect the siding up top.
I plan to use the Strong Tie lag screws on mine too. That's what I used on the floor joists.
That would be where the nails have the advantage -- flat heads vs. the screw hex heads..

If you ever try and take an old pool deck apart, you will find out just how good these tie-downs are. lol
There is left and right hand twist rafter ties. Don't use the screws if you are planning to finish the walls on the inside, the heads will hold wall material out. If you install ties on the outside use longer nails on the top plate portion so the grab the framing.
I'm going to take a shot at your question: I say the diamond brackets may be installed either direction, depending on what side of the wall you're going to be on when installing. And if you've already sheathed the roof, then you really only have one easy way to install them--and that's the way you did. I'm also going to guess that not only can you flip them around, but you can fasten them to either side of the wall. So, there would be four ways to do it.

Great stuff. Thanks! With the rafters directly across from one another on the main beam, how do you get the rafter saddles to go on opposite sides without the screws hitting each other? It seems that the screws would be in the exact same spot on opposite sides and hit each other going through the main beam.
Also, if you have those ties on the inside, how do you sheetrock over those giant heads on those screws?

I would think as long as you mount the diamond brackets the same way on both sides they would offset the difference. If the building is getting pushed over, one would be pulling and one would be pushing if mounted the same way..🤷♂️
Well done, Sam. Now when a tornado blows through, the whole building will be picked up off it's foundation. But the roof will still be attached! Lol

The best I can do is give someone else the whole shed. :) LOL Oh yes, I need to plan for some ventilation very soon. Probably going to be a gable vent, but not decided between that or the ceiling spinny vent things. :)
I'm no ventoligest but those spinny turbine things can sqeak sometimes and be a little annoying, just putting it out there😉😃

At home Depot they are usually sold out of the box they came in there is a picture of how they are used

Both ways are correct according to a TH-cam video about them from Strongtie.

If you look at simpson ties it showes them on the inside . buit as long as they are used i dont think it matters, have seen both ways, but mostly in
FYI on your rafter hangers, the two angled holes require a 16 nail to toe nail through the rafter and into the ridge. Those short screws aren’t correct.
You can turn the diamond plate around and get it out of your way.

They should face outside. This is only because my house, my brothers house and 2 houses currently being constructed have them facing out.
I just use Timberlok structural screws , they are code approved , quicker , and cheaper over all.
Simpson has truss/structural screws too. I agree they are much faster and often stronger.
think the only thing important is that these things hold the pieces together , having the flange facing out or in shouldnt matter unless theres sumting preventing you from driving the screws in or get too close with said screws to the end and possibly causing the beam to split

Required for code in Alberta if you are gonna permit and insure the building. But not alowed screws here...

Looks like these can’t be installed in a Tuffshed without an attic that will be finished? Those screw heads look like it would get in the way of drywall
Do any of your brackets have a price sticker on them? My guess is there has been as much if jot more inflation with these as metal fence posts!
I didn't see any, but no doubt they've gone up! Everything's going up, but our pay rate, huh.
I noticed the screw heads protruding out, how are you going to cover with Sheetrock or plywood after you insulate?
They put sheetrock on metal studs all the time and they have screws on every stud. In the end, it just doesn't matter.
@@dalecherry4044 The wafer head screws for metal studs are very flat, so no problem. If you use a regular drywall screw instead the drywall will crack/buckle if you put screw it in within a few inches of it.
@@huejanus5505 if you sink drywall screws they are just as flat if not flatter. Been there done that.
I still do not understand your answer. The heads of the screws you’re using protrudes out, by the looks of it, about 1/8” to 1/4” out. How are you going to nail Sheetrock on top of that without the Sheetrock cracking?
Whenever I get to that point (seems a long ways off still) I'll play it by ear. :)

The are not approved hurricane straps. They must go over the top of the truss and connect to the walls with at least 2 approved nails.

Sam, no impact driver? If you draw the screws beyond simply tight, they will not hold against that fictional hurricane....lol
Sam are u going too sheet rock your shop? If so your screws may interfere when hanging your sheet rock.
I'm not sure what the eventual wall covering will be in the workshop. I'll cross the screw head bridge when I get to it. :)

I'm working on a 14'x28' building for my self, and wired it up and sheet rocking it now. Just did not want to get in trouble with your sheeting.
Make sure to screw the plates in, nails are a devil to remove

Now for tying the walls to the floor/foundation ...zip ties are NOT approved. My vote -- ears IN toward the inside more difficult to bend and pull out too.

Saw a lot of nails missed the rafter. Can tell you were hurrying.
The brackets I purchased have holes too small. Only No 6 screws fit in them.
U'r missing the top/Pl.-to-roof blocking to nail off the roof perimeter & connection of blocking to the top plate. Just fyi
so with all these straps required, i'm safer in a shed than my house when a hurricane comes through, lol

Why do you make your set cut so big??? If you are going to drywall it you are going to have to cut your bords!. If you make your set cut 3.1/2" you're drywall will fit with no soffit🤔
The use of screws is illegal. Its also not nearly as strong. The hanger nails are rated for shear strength and any food inspector will fail you if it's done using screws.

Simpson is very clear which of their connections can use their screws. Both nail and screw strength is backed up by testing. What jurisdiction are those inspectors from?
I will stay put, the building in my area doesn't require hurricane brackets and other things like that to put up a building. I worked in the mobile home industry and I build my buildings like them because it was stated to me, take your house and put it on a frame and go down the road at 60 miles an hour and see what happens, a regular house will blow apart the mobile home will stay together because they are made for being moved and none of my buildings have fallen apart yet
Simpson book says install h2.5 and h10 on the exterior of the wall...
I don't understand why we have to put all this stuff chaining our sheds to the ground. I, for one, think it would be totally rad to have a flying shed.

I thought that the screws wood split the wood without drilling pilot holes. I was right.
Just because there’s a bunch of holes in the bracket doesn’t mean you have to put a screw in each one. 3 screws top and bottom would be plenty strong. I might be cheap but I’m also practical.
While not applicable to this workshop/shed build, a lot of inspectors will fail you if they're not installed correctly. Most require all holes have fasteners in them. All depends on who you get and what they look at. :)
I have never felt those ties were worth a darn. In my opinion the strap should go from the rafter all the way to the sill plate to do any good. Just my opinion. Too many joints in between.

I am not in favor of these brackets! Why you ask? Every fastener that you use compromises the structural integrity of the adjoining structure. I know a lot of you are going to disagree!. To me some beady eyed glasses wearing kid came up with this concept to push more building code regulations! Just like arc fault breakers in a house!

You forgot to pre-drill the holes...and yo uspent 2X the cost of nails....
Never use screws on stuff like that, that snap in earthquakes instead of flex.
I like your channel but sometimes fined them to. Much obvious info, not enough old style content. Most of your watchers know how to but are just trying to follow your journey like before. Again can’t wish you all the best but little tedious now
I have found the opposite is true over the years creating content. People who know, don't come here to learn. After the immediate viewing by subscribers, the long term viewership and eventual majority will be here to learn and want to know all the details.
