I swear that old hand drawn anime style just hits different, there is really something about it that makes me like it more than more recent digital animation. Despite some of the incredible scenes the new animation is able to produce.
This scene was honestly one of the most bone chilling scenes in the show. The 1999 version is better for the backstory but in the 2011 one it's just more silent and bone chilling, they took their time making the scene as something that gives you a chill and I give them a clap for that.
Overall I prefer 2011, but there are some aspects I appreciate more about the 1999 version. I actually like the 2011 animation better. People dislike it because it isn't as dark as 1999, but I think it actually works better. I find the violence to be more unsettling because the animation scheme is lighter. You just aren't expecting the violence with 2011 as much as you are with 1999, so when it happens, it's pretty creepy. Just look at how cold Killua's eyes look as he's smiling at the dying Jones in 2011. What I do appreciate about 1999 are the additional backstory and the music. The music in that scene is just unnerving. Who knows, 2011 was the version of HxH I first watched so I'm likely biased.

I appreciate 1999 more with these moments. Killua is always a softie around Gon and his friends, but if that wasn't the case, he was a cold hearted assassin and it worked wonderfully.
When hasn't he? He's originally a good kid, but he could be totally heartless sometimes. It's not like he doesn't want to kill because he has mercy, but he is tired of it and think that's unnecessary. He is a soft onii-chan around Alluka, and he acts nice Infront of Gon, but when Gon wasn't around he didn't find it giving he any uneasiness to kill or black mail, of even sacrifice innocent civilians. He just tried to play nice because Gon is a nice kid, so he pretends to be one as well to stay his friend.

The 2011 version is really damn good but I only give 99 the edge for its authentic style and thick atmosphere. Also the music really sells the scene and overall just felt more grittier and real. Something I think the glossy look of 2011 animation kind of takes away from the show. That dark atmosphere and grit is something you dont see nowadays anymore.
This is why I can't get into the 2011 version so much. For me, it's too flashy and the gritty, dark atmosphere isn't there. For me in general, I prefer that darker tone, as it fits with the manga's tone. Also, the 2011 version is a bit too toned down for me from the bit I have seen. My other issue with the 2011 version is the pacing. It's too fast-paced for me, which makes it difficult for me to get attached to the characters because it has that ADHD way of storytelling, but this is a problem with many shows in general after a certain point. It's all go go go go. For instance, I know the pacing was slower and took more episodes, but during the Hunter exam, there was the arc where Gon was hunting Hisoka and he was practicing with his rod and everything, while also being scared and all that as well and anxious. With the way the show was paced, you could feel that, so when Gon *did* manage to get Hisoka's badge, you felt the same joy, albeit temporary, because he succeeded. His perseverance paid off. I don't get that from the 2011 version. When the same above happened in the 2011 version I was like..."meh".

Because of the digital age, it is easier for studios to maintain a high quality of art, which is why the characters in the 2011 version tend to stay better on model. In terms of animation and art though, the 1999 version is nothing to toss aside- for a long running series, done completely on cels, the quality is, frankly, astounding. They likely had a very similar budget at the time to what the 2011 one had, and cel animation is more costly because of how much cels cost individually. Nowadays, animators can take advantage of digital inking and colouring, which is much more time and cost effective, hence why cel animation is a relic if the past. To see what can be done on cels, just watch something like Magnetic Rose of Akira- both with some of the most renound animation from Japan, both done entirely with cels. Sorry for the long post, I am just sick of hearing how the age of an animation is reflective in its quality. Even snow white was done in the 30s and most animation today cant even compare.

I ended that season in the 1999 version and I like it more, because in the 2011 version I feel that they cut very important scenes or that they make the season better, I can see the season in 1999 version a thousand times, I saw chimera ants just because it was the continuation of the season, and I like it a lot but speaking of the first season I became more fond of the 1999 version, it doesn't matter it's still my favorite anime :)

I watched the 1999 version when I was so young and the child me thought that scene was so cool ( yeah, there might be something wrong with me) so when I saw the new version I dont know what should I feel. I love the graphics and animation of the 2011 version but the atmosphere, the background music, the moment and the experience the 1999 version gave me wasnt there.
the 1999 version handled this one hit kill much better than the overhyped 2011 version due to the older version being more straightforward to get to the point unlike the newer version. Other than that, both mediums are ok.
bryan c nah in the 2011 version I like it better because u can see the evil in Kils eyes as Jones begs for his heart back, the Erie ambient noise of everyone reacting, no music just a beating heart slowly fading away. It’s a much better and savage performance than the 99 version

Can you imagine if they did the Chimera Ant Arc in the 90's ... How insane and savage it would have looked and the detail to story and characters.... I feel we missed out on a dark, grotesque, yet beautiful work of art. It would have been incredible!
Both are cool, but I just love the way Killua placed his heart in his hand after he begs for it back and dies in the ‘11 version. Crushing it is badass, but giving it back to him after he takes his last breathe asking for it was just fucking ruthless and cold. Also hilarious.

The 2011 didn't even have the balls to show Killua holding the guy's heart. Instead, they censored it by having Killua comically put the guy's heart in a little baggy before showing it to him. It's something he would never do, it goes against his character, and it defeats the point of the action. This is meant to be a horrifying moment for the man killed, that was Killua's intent. The power move of showing a man that you just killed his own still-beating heart in your hand. Not to mention how ridiculous it is that Killua had a bag on him just in case he needed to rip a guy's heart out (lol). The 1999 one is better in basically every way. The cinematography, music, atmosphere, and art are all superior as well. People who say the animation in the 2011 version is better are high.

I ended that season in the 1999 version and I like it more, because in the 2011 version I feel that they cut very important scenes or that they make the season better, I can see the season in 1999 version a thousand times, I saw chimera ants just because it was the continuation of the season, and I like it a lot but speaking of the first season I became more fond of the 1999 version, it doesn't matter it's still my favorite anime :)

Uh-this is the silly thing about the uncensored vs censored arguments. If they truly wanted to censor it they would’ve skipped this scene entirely. A heart was removed from a man and he watched it until it stopped beating in either version. Like-that’s dark no matter how you try to tone it down 😂
it’s so amazing how in the 2011 they were able to put so much more tension and extra stuff into showing off the prisoner, yet they finished the part before the 99 version. impressive.

I watched the 1999 version when I was so young and the child me thought that scene was so cool ( yeah, there might be something wrong with me) so when I saw the new version I dont know what should I feel.
I love the graphics and animation of the 2011 version but the atmosphere, the background music, the moment and the experience the 1999 version gave me wasnt there.
i like how the 2011 version shows both Jones' and Killua's abilities without having the need of words

the 1999 version handled this one hit kill much better than the overhyped 2011 version due to the older version being more straightforward to get to the point unlike the newer version. Other than that, both mediums are ok.

bryan c nah in the 2011 version I like it better because u can see the evil in Kils eyes as Jones begs for his heart back, the Erie ambient noise of everyone reacting, no music just a beating heart slowly fading away. It’s a much better and savage performance than the 99 version

Podria preguntar a que te refieres a predecible? Para mi el 1999 es todo demasiado frio, pero en el sentido de poco expresivo. Probablemente por la calidad del dibujo y la animación. Sinceramente prefiero el contraste de niño despreocupado de Killua con su gaceta asesina, a comparacion de su version de 1999 en la que parece constantemente ser un adolescente intentando ser edgy 24/7

Claramente es mejor la versión del 99, ya sea a nivel de banda sonora, dibujo, sombreado y por sobre todo, las expresiones. Podrian haber mejorado la calidad pero en la versión del 2011 se pierde la tensión de la situación. Claramente vi esta versión solo para ver en anime lo que leí en hormigas quimeras.

My favorite part of this scene is how everyone is so shocked and Gon's like oh by the way, killua's family is a bunch of assassins. Forgot to tell you that little bit of information.
Can you imagine if they did the Chimera Ant Arc in the 90's ... How insane and savage it would have looked and the detail to story and characters....
I feel we missed out on a dark, grotesque, yet beautiful work of art. It would have been incredible!
Both are cool, but I just love the way Killua placed his heart in his hand after he begs for it back and dies in the ‘11 version. Crushing it is badass, but giving it back to him after he takes his last breathe asking for it was just fucking ruthless and cold. Also hilarious.

この回については作画というかキャラクターの顔が良くないけど、それ以外は相変わらず1999年版の方が雰囲気も演出も音楽も何を比較しても優勝です。
1999年版のハンターハンターは映画のようです。
規制も増えてきて新版の方は心臓の描写が出来ないっていうのも痛すぎた。でも、声優のレベルは格段に上がってる。
この時代は特に規制が激しかったからな

The 2011 didn't even have the balls to show Killua holding the guy's heart. Instead, they censored it by having Killua comically put the guy's heart in a little baggy before showing it to him. It's something he would never do, it goes against his character, and it defeats the point of the action. This is meant to be a horrifying moment for the man killed, that was Killua's intent. The power move of showing a man that you just killed his own still-beating heart in your hand. Not to mention how ridiculous it is that Killua had a bag on him just in case he needed to rip a guy's heart out (lol). The 1999 one is better in basically every way. The cinematography, music, atmosphere, and art are all superior as well. People who say the animation in the 2011 version is better are high.
