@OldSchool Well speaking in terms of the Spanish culture I know when they call someone fat it's like a compliment. Since these countries are poor if you are chubby or fat it is looked like you have money. So by calling you that it just means "oh look how well off you are. Good on you..." Sorta thing.

A friend of mine knows a lot of Ghanaians and one of the main things she complains about is how blunt they are. I feel like it's partially a translation thing, and I will admit that is also because a lot of us Americans (myself included) are too coddled, some of us overreact to simple 'insults'. I live in canada by the way so unlike in the states are fast food standards are a little higher. Not saying people don't go and get fast food, they do but is is not as cheap. It is cheaper to make food at home. Also I understand with the whole eating orangic can get really expensive. It sad really when people try to push eating organic when a lot of people can't afford to eat that way.

I'm glad you brought up the "fat is a body type" thing, because that was a tough pill for me to swallow when I (an American) lived in Ghana for a little while. I was complaining about sweating one time and a Ghanaian friend was like, "it makes sense because you're a bit fat." I couldn't believe it! It took me a while to wrap my Western head around the idea that he wasn't insulting me, he was just stating a fact lol.
But yeah if this lady isn't aware of those cultural differences (and obviously doesn't want to learn) they're gonna have a bad time.
I lived between Canada and Costa Rica growing up, with one parent in each country. I took my then boyfriend (currently husband) to visit my family in CR and he was incredibly offended by the nickname “chino”, which means Chinese. He had it, because he was asian, but so did my little brother, and it did take him awhile to wrap his head about it not being racist, and just pointing out the fact that he had small eyes.
I just don’t get why someone goes to a country, knowing that your fiancé cares about his culture and then deny him wearing a traditional dress when meeting his traditional mom.
He needs to find another girl, he didn’t deserve to be slapped like that. I felt bad for her in the beginning but after the whole market situation you can’t really blame him for being embarrassed of her.
