I just guess there’s a slight delay between audio feed - it was a big problem with things like zoom during the stay at home period we all endured. Especially with videos when you sort of want to keep momentum and avoid lulls.
What up. Diagnosed autistic (age 22) and ADHD (age 30) here. We don't do that stuff. Stims can be vocal, but they don't typically present like Tourette's tics or miming using an ATM hahaha. Most stims are actually pretty subtle (for example, my main one is tapping my collarbone). Even stuff like hand flapping (not one I have) don't look as weird as whatever Elphaba was trying to do. I will also point out, I have no issues with self-diagnosis (it can be really difficult getting a diagnosis), but it's clear to see when someone self-diagnoses to find resources to help them and when someone self-diagnoses to be 'quirky' or 'different'.
i have nothing against self diagnosing as a diagnosed autistic myself, but lying about being diagnosed is the issue with her. just say you think you’re autistic and is looking into being diagnosed 😭
literally, i was diagnosed in january and before then it was always “i think i am and it’s been brought up by psychologists but no professional has officially diagnosed me”
Self-diagnosing autism can be bad praxis, due to comorbidity amongst other things, but I KNOW how hard it is to get formally diagnosed and how expensive it can get if you aren’t on medicaid. It sucks that people like Elphaba give people the worst impression possible to that premise, and without the proper nuance.
@@Tayl0r_ The thing is, it's fully understandable in USA where you have to pay for diagnostic assessments unless you have insurance. Here in the UK, it's as easy as going to the GP, saying you think you have autism and that it impacts your daily life, and asking for a referral for a diagnostic assessment with a psych. It's completely free. There are waiting lists of up to a year unfortunately, though they do fast track you if you're about to go to uni/school and need the diagnosis quicker or if you're high risk of harm. But you can easily just do it as jaqsre says, as most autistic people do pre-diagnosis, say you're on a waiting list to be diagnosed because you have traits aligning with symptoms.
It's sad to think that she could've gotten vocal training and done a profession in singing, music or theatre but instead chooses to waste her life on Tik Tok
honestly, autism overlaps with a lot of disorders (bipolar, social anxiety, BPD etc) so her being autistic wouldn’t be easy to tell as a viewer. i find it weird she calls on her viewers to validate the idea she’s autistic

As someone with autism I think self diagnosing is valid, especially if you don’t have the resources to get diagnosed but to lie about a diagnosis and going on a show for autistic people is not good.

I'm officially certified ADHD af (clinically diagnosed with fairly severe ADHD)... I also have other conditions and disabilities that _do_ flare up... I'd never describe ADHD as "flaring up" 🤣. Yeah, sometimes it's more intense or harder to handle due to things like stress, poor sleep, sensory overload etc. or gets ramped up because of excitement e.g... but it's just not a "flare up" - it's not the same as things you acquire because it's hardwired into your brain and fundamentally affects the way you think and process the world - I don't feel like I _have_ ADHD, I feel like I _am_ ADHD - much like I am queer 😅. Kinda hard to explain the nuance, but when you are ADHD, I feel like you intrinsically understand how it's different 🤔

I have tic disorder (not Tourette’s because I don’t have vocal tics, only motor ones) and it is painful. My neck hurts a lot and so do my wrists and ankles. It’s embarrassing and when I realize I’m doing it in public, I think about it and it gets worse. I can’t imagine wanting to fake it. You have to be so desperate for attention. My heart goes out to people with moderate to severe Tourette’s that were affected by this.

As a self-diagnosed autistic person awaiting assessment, I think the notion that lack of diagnosis means you don't have it is quite harmful. I am certain I have it because of genetic factors, my traits and prognosis from mental health professionals, there are often many factors in self-diagnosis. The issue only arises if you haven't done the research needed to self-diagnose, I think her claiming she has autism without diagnosis becoming a controversy is mostly people jumping on the hate train, negating the very valid criticisms of her that are out there.
I think for those faking any illness or injury they'll be found out when the real triggers come out or show themselves. A trigger that doesn't align with whatever they're claiming they have at that moment or fit whatever narrative they're in at that time. Living with a diagnosis, chronic or otherwise is having the strength to also navigate life WITH it not trying to figure out how to convince everyone you HAVE it.

I’ll preface my comment by saying she shouldn’t have lied about having an official diagnosis or entered a competition of this sort without an official diagnosis. Regardless of whether she may be autistic or not, lying about having the diagnosis isn’t okay. The autistic community is generally pretty accepting of self-diagnosis. There are many barriers to official diagnosis, there’s diagnosis biases from medical professionals, and sometimes the cons outweigh the pros of official diagnosis for some individuals. Autism isn’t a condition that has medication or anything. You can potentially access treatments for some autistic traits and learn strategies to make life easier, but none of that requires official diagnosis. Official diagnosis does come with some discrimination too. Unless there’s accessibility options you can’t access without medical diagnosis (eg, accommodations at work, school, or uni) then seeking the official diagnosis for many just isn’t worth it. I’m not normally in support of “diagnosing” creators over the internet but as an autistic person I feel pretty confident saying she’s probably autistic lol. She’s still in the wrong for lying about being officially diagnosed.

I’ll preface my comment by saying she shouldn’t have lied about having an official diagnosis or entered a competition of this sort without an official diagnosis. Regardless of whether she may be autistic or not, lying about having the diagnosis isn’t okay.
The autistic community is generally pretty accepting of self-diagnosis. There are many barriers to official diagnosis, there’s diagnosis biases from medical professionals, and sometimes the cons outweigh the pros of official diagnosis for some individuals. Autism isn’t a condition that has medication or anything. You can potentially access treatments for some autistic traits and learn strategies to make life easier, but none of that requires official diagnosis. Official diagnosis does come with some discrimination too. Unless there’s accessibility options you can’t access without medical diagnosis (eg, accommodations at work, school, or uni) then seeking the official diagnosis for many just isn’t worth it. I’m not normally in support of “diagnosing” creators over the internet but as an autistic person I feel pretty confident saying she’s probably autistic lol. She’s still in the wrong for lying about being officially diagnosed.
