Phil X treats richie's solos with respect. He reproduces the original solos like they are in the record and he is a great guitarrist too.

Yes I Totally Agree He Does Treat Them With Respect & That Is Why I Believe Fans Are Not Totally Upset But Richie Is A Leader & Phil Will Need To Have His Own Songs With The Band To Truly Be Added Member., Richie Will Always Be The Missing Part Of The Heart & Soul & Emotions Of The BAND. He Was Jon's Rt Side Since The Start

Why should we need to compare? Both are amazing and unique guitarists who play with their souls and make one with their guitars. They have their own style but they share the same envy to have fun and transmit their thrill to the fans. Phil doesn't consider himself as Richie's replacement anyway. He's PHIL X and he's here to have fun with the guys just like Richie did.
So instead of comparing, we should just thank them for everything they did and actually share with us. For the thrill they procure during each of their solos, for the smiles they provoke when they are poking fun at Jon and the kindness they display to their fans during the meet and greets. And may both keep rocking our world for decades to come. ♥♥

Phil is in an impossible position of replacing a legend. And this video makes it very tough to put Phil in the same category when it uses three of Richie's best solos ("Born To Be My Baby," "Keep The Faith" and "Raise Your Hands"). My biggest problem has always been with the Bon Jovi fans who say you can't tell the difference. Are you kidding me? If you think Phil and Richie sound exactly the same, you have not truly been listening to Bon Jovi over these past 25-plus years.

Anthony Coleman I closed my eyes just to listen and could tell right away who was who, Phil maybe a good guitarist, he just sounds awful playing for Bon Jovi, he just sounds off, he tries to be too precise with every note instead of letting it flow naturally, he sounds like an average person trying to learn the songs in there bedroom.

Richie's hands can be recognised over a million others, and has far more technique. But, quoting his own words in an interview, with technique alone you can't be emotional at all! And I think this video is a fitting explanation.
In addition, I think a musician who really has the so-called professionality just fits in whatever he does. There is a lot of people who sing or play stuff written by others, but if you are truly skilled you know how to make them "yours" and make them sound great. In this case there's not even the slightest idea of warmth. You can find a lot more cover videos on here that sound EVEN far better than Phil's efforts. I put my hands in my head listening to that Dead Or Alive solo... aaargh!! Where's its POWER? If I were in Richie's shoes, I'd feel extremely humiliated because it's like paying no homage to the last 30 years: it feels like JBJ wants to completely erase the Sambora era, yet while knowing perfectly he's going nowhere without him.
Richie is so versatile. He can play blues, rock, jazz or even a cappella, and still you can taste his flavour. I listened him covering songs that are so much better than the originals. So it's really a crying shame seeing such a bad replacement for him.

Completely unfair comparison. The fans want to hear those iconic songs and solos, what choice does Phil have but to play them? Now, if Jon had given Phil more creative input on THINFS album, instead of John Shanks, the playing field would have been more level. Phil is an incredible musician, and clever when it comes to implenting new techniques etc, he is I think a more creative player. If Jon would just let him rock the fuck out and create his own epic solos, that would absolutely be to benefit of Bon Jovi.

Phil X is great, but in these clips he looks and sounds like he's putting in a day's work with a cover band. If he really enjoys the music, I don't think he should restrained from strutting his stuff musically and exhibiting some of his manic, rock and roll attitude to help fuel the excitement fans feel for a Bon Jovi show.

Both are two amazing guitarist. Do not forget Phil is replacing Richie, means he has to stay in "Richie's way" and it is not so easy. Phil is very talented, technique from his side coming from hard rock music. He's a good sideman and he's reproducing live amazing solos (I had the pleasure the see live Bon Jovi both with RS and recently with PhilX), but Richie has an important thing: SOUL. Solos belong to him, hi wrote them note by note and playing them you can feel the soul, passion, pathos and feeling behind a single note, something that PhilX can't replace.
I'm not Phil can rewrite solos like that, despite the different style, Sambora has the power to write solos where each note is perfect there, with that vibration and tone. He felt all the solos he did.
PhilX, is an animal on the stage! You can see from his face how he loves playing and stay there as much as he can!
    Peace!

Isn't the ultimate test of a guitarist or any other musician, songwriter, singer, performer to get their art out there and heard and appreciated by music fans?
You could be the most technically talented musician ever, but if you can't create your own music that people want to hear, what's the point.
Richie wrote, performed, and made the music of BJ loved worldwide and no matter how well you cover his music or perform other much less known music, you will never be as good as the original who brought their music to the masses. Richie plays with the soul of the great blues players.
It reminds me of seeing Queen this summer with Adam Lambert, and even though I'm a huge Freddie Mercury fan, Adam may technically be a better singer than Freddie. He perfectly performs Freddie's songs effortlessly. But in no way is he better than Freddie. He can't duplicate Freddie's tone or soul. Does Adam make his own music that some people like? Sure. But overall there is no comparison.
Point being, if you want to display your amazing skill and talent, feel free to step into someone else's shoes and impress the world. But if you want to make a real name for yourself, you've got to do it on your own, with your own original material and fans.
Sadly, I don't see the music world ever appreciating a new musician/guitarist like Richie or VH, so the only option going forward might be the Phil X approach.

  • @olivarionline
    @olivarionline 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

How can you even compare? Sambora was involved in the writing of most of the songs and in the production, it was his style of playing/writing at the time when the albums were released and has got artistic license to improvise/change the solos as much as he likes when he plays them live - it will always sound like him because it's him. Phil X is great at filling in and emulating the sounds so that the band can continue touring unrelentingly... if he played like Sambora plays live many would say that he is not faithful to the song and therefore is in the awkward position of having to play much closer to the original versions than Sambora ever did while adapting them to a live setting.

I think the important thing will be what the NEW material sounds like. We know Richie was a big part of the BJ sound, whats the sound now? SLow melodic cowboy rock? thats what john did on his own

Such silliness. They are both fabulous guitarists. Richie wrote most of the songs and iconic parts we all know Bon Jovi for. But it Was Richie who chose to leave the band. He basically didn't show up one day. Phil X got a call asking if he could be on a plane and fill in the next day. Had to attempt to learn their entire catalog over night! Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) he arrived just as Jon said Good Night Everyone!
Phil is now in the band as a touring member of the band. If Richie wanted to be in the band, I'm sure he would. If you want to here Bon Jovi music live, he's the one in the band now.
Can't you just enjoy instead of comparing one to the other? Do you spend this much time comparing one thumb to the other, saying the left one is better then the right??? Like I said silly...

  • @Joesfosterdogs

not about who's better...Sambora has MUCH more FEEl (blues player) in his playing which fits the Jovi style...Phil is more technical and hard rock-metal...if you picked one to play in Journey, Sambora gets the gig, in Anthrax, Phil...Phil is a pro and has swag and confidence and that is half of it...he's a super cool guy so the tour is easy with him...personality is a huge part of getting a gig...everyone can play at that level...it is the other levels to complete the pyramid that weeds out the cattle call...Richie was ROCK STAR at the level of Jon, so the two was overload...adding to the show and bringing in the skirts

Without a doubt I say Richie!! the man plays with heart and soul you can hear that in his solo's. Phil might be more skilled but doesn't have that touch that Sambora has

Really unfair to be compared to Richie. Sounds like Phil X definitely knows what he's doing, but in my opinion Richie has a better sound, soul and feel. And lets know forget - he was the one who came with up with all the signature solo lines. Much respect to Phil X, but Bon Jovi is not Bon Jovi without Richie. ..

  • @BlueRage

Richie Sambora is def one of the best guitarists in the world. The pinch harmonics and that signature throttling up from a low E is like stepping on the throttle of an 800 hp car. Dead or Alive gives me shivers every time. Add to that his soul and passion for the songs that HE wrote. Phil who? Seriously, tho, props to Phil X on Always solo, but it kind of looked like Slash had joined the band. Look at Richie channeling the same solo. Shivers again... Richie brings a girl to tears at the end... now that's the soul of a player and the player of a soul :) Not many guitarists have this gift.

I watched Bon Jovi last night. I noticed the Phil X had a horribly flat note when he was doing it sustained. And even though that was me being picky, the biggest loss was Richie's accompanying voice. The songs just didn't feel or sound right without his vocal tones in there. I was totally bored with the show because of it.

The original will virtually almost always be preferable to the replacement and it's true in this case. Phil X is a better guitarist than Richie (IMO) but he's restraining himself a lot in Bon Jovi because it's not his show, he's filling a role. As mentioned previously here, Phil X on his owns is completely different than Phil X in Bon Jovi.
On a completely unrelated note what the fuck in JBJ doing at 5:55? So awkward looking...

The biggest difference is Richie's stage presence. With the largest respect to Phil, he looks like he's just playing the songs (which is fine as he does a great job). Good example is Keep The Faith (I was lucky enough to be at the Wembley gig in front of the stage). I can watch Richie and feel what he is playing and feeling - it comes across. With Phil, it just doesn't for me. Very 'studio'. But that's just me.

more important than your technique, is your fucking soul! Phil X is more concerned about being perfect with his guitar skills, while richie, richie is pure sweat and blood. Sambora always was and always will be Bon Jovi's shadow, when, the truth is, that Bon Jovi without him is just a no content ''long hair rock n' roll band''

Could not have asked for a better player to cover Ritchie than Phil. I believe Phil is technically a better player but Ritchie and Bon Jovi together were such an amazing duo. Their harmonies especially were nothing short of amazing. I don't think a comparison is fair. They both are excellent players and musicians.

I like Phil X, but Richie Sambora is Bon Jovi's Guitar player, co-song writer, right hand man... It is rapidly approaching cover band sounding...
"Wanted" sounds horrible, thin, and zero feeling..... Just compare 9:09 to 10:01...

Please give an example. I can't find any better than this, find me a video where phil plays a great solo of one of he's own songs. He just plays covers cause he's incapable of writting a good song, or a good solo. And he sucks doing acoustic too

    • @deltawhiskey1398
      @deltawhiskey1398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Lmao....your bias is so obvious it's ridiculous....so in order for Phil to be a better player in your mind....he has to play a great solo ( in your opinion) of one of his OWN songs...(which is all over youtube btw)....and he has to write HIT songs....( which the last time I checked, writing songs doesn't have anything to do with playing the guitar) lol....you can watch about 5 mins of Phil on the tube and KNOW he is a better player than your drunk idol.

You’ve got to be fair and say yea Richie is better in all of these, BUT he wrote all of these parts in his style! Phil (hard rock)has a very very different style to Richie (blues), and in all of these he’s trying to play parts written by a very very different guitarist to himself… it’s not really a fair comparison

Now there is a video from Mr Sambora that states he did an amazing job and the sound of what he did justifies it as well

They are both good players in their own style. Sambora made the classic guitar sound & tone about what became Bon Jovi with his heavy style and bluesy edge not alot of dare back in the day. very obvious if you listen closely. Phil X is just a player player in his own right but from another corner filling in. you can't compare. phil has feeling and richie but they are not the same person. like a fingerprint. i am open to alot of musical stuff i just prefer sambora but someone's gotta do the job to keep it alive so there could be worse.

Well Richie is my hero, I play guitar because of him and the soul he puts into his playing has always been phenomenal, not always about speed and shredding and stuff, which is awesome when it's called for, but Richie made solos that fitted everything he has ever played on pretty much, even his session work is wonderful. Phil is a phenomenal player in his own right, very different players to one another, I just don't think Phil has the right tone for Bon Jovi that's all, not that he has a bad one by any means in the slightest, but it sticks out of the mix where Richie's just fitted so well all the time. And I think that's probably the difference, cause he play all the solos wonderfully, but he's got such a different style that's all and I just don't think his tone fits the mix as much. Just my opinion that's all, Richie is always gonna be my number 1 haha! But Phil, equally as good in his own right and I don't think comparing is the right thing to do between them at times, two guys, both great players and musicians, both with great voices to, who love what they do and it's clear to see, so good on them ❤️ Just got to say though, that "These Days" solo from Richie was ripping haha! My favourite era was that tour for his playing, energy and tone, just awesome! 😁
