    I’ve done this a lot and recently people have been adapting to this by simply moving out of the way once I lean in. Causing me to stumble on my own feet because I expected to bounce off the opponents body. So watch out for that. And stay balanced.

    Nice video. Although there are many different bump finishes, I think the main thing to finishing through contact is to get stronger and work on your athleticism. The skinnier you are compared to your defender, the harder it is to finish. But yes assuming you're not skinny/weak these are all great moves. And agreed bodying ppl is so fun. If you're a lot stronger than your defenders you'll start getting double teamed too.

      I agree to the point of “if you want to finish good, you gotta be stronger” but i don’t think the thing is bodying people.
      You gotta be stronger to have more CONTROL over your body.
      To have more balance, to stay compose even if somebody crash into you.
      Even little guys like Isaiah Thomas could get trought a giant like Whiteside cause he was capable to prepare the body for the contact, he didn’t bodied him.

    • @mathieumilgram6798
      @mathieumilgram6798 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CoachFrikki Because the pivot foot launches forward and in the air while the front foot stayed planted. Both feet have to technically leave the floor at the same time after pivoting, although it is widely accepted that there can be some delay. This first example is too obvious though, it is basically a 2 step layup from deadstop, which is a clear travel, even though it's too often not getting whistled, even in NBA *cough*DeMar DeRozan*cough*. Thankfully commentators rarely fail to point this out too, so the awareness is there.
      By the way, I want to thank you for your work here, I picked up basketball again last summer. I am better than ever now thanks to your videos, the ones about driving angles and different finishes particularly. I love how you show different defensive scenarios, then how to react and use the right moves accordingly. Also added a few dribbling moves to my bag. Really wish I had this much available information when I was younger, but I'm also glad to still be improving my game in my 30s.

      @@mathieumilgram6798 Hmm. Lifting your pivot is actually not illegal. No matter how long you keep it lifted up. Meaning you can finish either off 1 or 2 feet after the step through. What is illegal is 1) dribbling after you lift your pivot 2) putting it back down.
      But really appreciate those kind words. Never thought so many people would end up watching and taking stuff from these breakdowns.

    • @mathieumilgram6798
      @mathieumilgram6798 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CoachFrikki I think I am biased because I live in France, this is how I have been taught and this move gets whistled in LNB games. Rules are not the same in NBA and some are differently interpreted. Also, just came up on this apparently from the FIBA rules :
      "To pass or shoot for a field goal, the player may jump off a pivot foot, but neither foot may be returned to the floor before the ball is released from the hand(s)"
      There is also this from NBA rules :
      "You cannot lift your pivot foot off the floor until you shoot, pass, or begin dribbling the ball. You can not hold onto the ball for longer than five seconds. You can not change your pivot foot once it is established"
      There are apparently subtleties I don't get. To me, planting the free foot while lifting the pivot foot makes the free foot the new pivot foot, which is a violation. Thus, in my mind, jumping off two feet seems to be the only way to step through without breaking the rules.

    Tips on how to beat aggressive defenders off the dribble & how to create separation for your shot?

    • @davidhall4401
      @davidhall4401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video has answered your question on beating aggressive defenders off the dribble, but I will break it down in more detail.

    • @davidhall4401
      @davidhall4401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will break this down into two parts. Part 1 deals with beating aggressive defenders off the dribble and part 2 will explain how to create space for a jump shot.
      Part 1:
      To beat an aggressive defender off the dribble get close to his body at about arm length away and keep your body squared to him so he can't guess which way you're going to attack. When you decide which way you want to go, drive past him at a very straight lined tight angle towards the basket. Don't go wide where you think space is after getting past him, remain tight. That wide space that I am referring to is the baseline/sideline/bench/corner 3 point/ area. Don't attack wide because this allows your defender to get back in front and cut you off for either a blocked shot or difficult field goal attempt. When you attack close to his body use your off arm to physically close the gap between you and the defender because this eliminates his running room and ability to move freely. With your off arm and shoulders make sure you initiate contact first or hit early to eliminate his ability to move.
      Part 2:
      To create space for your jumper:
      To create space for a jumper use the same tactic that explained in part 1. Attack close to his body and use your off to keep him from cutting you off. However, when you put your off arm into his body to shoot, drive hard and give him a nudge/pushoff to create space for your jumper because the push off knocks him backward. Remember you can't step back without making the defender step back as in falling away from you. Remember though when you use your off arm, keep it close to your body so that when you initiate contact you don't extend your off arm as if you're a running back doing a stiff arm. The ref will see this and call an offensive foul.

    • @davidhall4401
      @davidhall4401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A great time to execute these tips is to look at your defender's feet. If he wants to make you go right, his hip will open up and face the right hand side with his right foot in front and his left foot behind the right foot. In this situation his right foot is his opposite or top foot. What you want to do is attack that right foot to drive left because this will force him to reopen his hips to that other side. Noone can turn his hips faster than you can run. When you attack that opposite foot stay close to his hip because this puts you in position to seal him off with your opposite arm that doesn't have the ball.

    • @davidhall4401
      @davidhall4401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If this is confusing let me know, but this is what the video means by finishing through contact. Aggressive defenders will give you lots of contact. In order to finish with contact you must get past your defender with contact, but make sure you're giving contact rather than taking contact because the player who hits first wins the battle. One last thing to tell you is that some defenders will avoid being touched. If they avoid being touched, attack them at a tight angle and close the gap as much as you can without getting physical because it will still make it harder for them to move.

      @@CoachFrikki I believe defense is a combination of sense, hustle and teamwork. What do you think?

    • @davidhall4401
      @davidhall4401 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adebola07 Yes, but defense is also about tactics/technique and knowing the offensive player's tendencies. For example, if he's quick and likes to change direction off the dribble, try to see figure out if he's right handed or left handed. If he's left handed, play him to his right, but sit on his left hand. Furthermore, don't give him a straight line to the basket going to his right, but encourage more right than left without giving away your top foot. If he drives right follow him and remain sitting on that left hand very tightly. If he crosses over to his left, follow him without opening your hips to the left side, or he will beat you and you pick up a foul. Marcus Smart uses this technique to guard Kyrie and James Harden. Gary Payton used this tactic to guard Allen Iverson because he was quick and changed direction well. If you're a guard and you're defending a guy who likes to post up smaller players then put your arm bar into his back early and be very active with your hands.

    • @davidhall4401
      @davidhall4401 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adebola07 I do agree with you defense is definitely a combination of sense, hustle, and teamwork, but it can be worked on. Now looking back on my comment knowing your offensive player's tendencies is apart of sense. However, to be effective at that sense you must work on your stamina and lateral quickness. Teamwork means that your teammates must be on the same page as you in correlation to the first two things. I know a coach who said defense is nothing that needs to be practiced, it's just something you have to be willing to do. I think he's wrong because in order to develop sense you need to study your opponent, which is mentally improving defense. Moreover, you need to physically practice defensive drills that translate to the actual game, not the cliché defensive slides and zig zags of always opening up with the ball handler, but drills where you have to slide, run, and cut off.

    • @davidhall4401
      @davidhall4401 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adebola07 Now he's correct when he says you have to want to play defense, but you need the tools to go along with the will. And you need the will to go along with the tools. You can't have one and think everything else will just come.

    Could you make a video about offensive fouls? Because these totally look like it. I need a deeper understanding especially for us overthinking hoopers.

      The reason these moves here aren't offensive fouls is because these guys are bumping instead of shoving or you can say ramming into the defender. They're simply controlling their space and not extending their arms. To take charges against these guys you need to learn how to anticipate where they're going by actually guiding them in the direction you want them to go and cut them off. When you cut them off make sure you don't lean forward towards them when they give you contact. Attention to detail has a great video on defense for stuff like this I believe. Trying to set up for a charge the typical way won't work against this because guys know how to euro step around. I will post the link to the video.

      Here is the video in the link below. It's not necessarily about taking charges, but I have caused the defender get called for an offensive foul with these tips. th-cam.com/video/z-PU-YNRTZM/w-d-xo.html

      I will look to see if this guy who made the video or the other guy attention to detail has a video on taking charges.

    Hey coach, should I always look to put some contact on the drive and the lay up?

      Depends on where the defense is. So not always no.

      No secrets, you just gotta improve your bag, your range, passing to keep with the more athletic dudes. While of course working on your own athleticism.

    Does this work even though I'm not the tallest player on the court?

      Of course. It's about being strong, getting low & using your body. There were a few clips there with 6'1 Bledsoe and 5'9 Isaiah Thomas.

    is this always legal? When does it become an offensive foul? great vid and channel btw

    • @CoachFrikki
      @CoachFrikki  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have the lane to the basket you can initiate as much contact as you want.
      If your defender is on your lane then a lot of contact can be called.
      Also extending your forearm can be called.
