You want a device that plays your Game Gear games on the TV through the 32X? The answer is the Mega Everdrive or Everdrive MD. Game Gear roms converted to Sega Master System that run perfectly. And it looks glorious through RGB.
+Blastfrog I believe he said in a previous video that this voice over is temporary. Apparently he is still working on a definitive version oh and EDF! EDF!
Unfortunately, the first version of the Master Gear is incompatible with the Majesco version of the Game Gear, but the updated version (Master Gear Converter 2) works on it perfectly.
FINALY,after 5 years of reviewing the game gear, mark did eventualy reviewed the master convertor,i own both stuff as well but only rarely play on it for a while but it’s soo enjoyeble. for 5 to 10 minutes.
I used to have a similar device but positioned the Master System cartridge at a 45 degree angle above the screen. I used to play Afterburner all the time.
I spent a good chuck of last year building a consolized game gear and it's a glorious experience. I hope you can find someone to mod your game gear, Mark. The game gear library needs more exposure.
Even though I didnt grow up in the era, over the years classic game room has inspired me to maybe get into classic game collecting. I already collect for the seventh gen (I believe it is called), but I think being exposed to the older stuff would be fun!
I have the Master Gear converter variant and works quite well. Unfortunately my Game Gear keeps crapping out, replaced the capacitors and it worked quite well until the screen itself started to flicker so I probably have to get it modded for LCD or TV out... which is rather expensive right now due to the weak dollar in Canada. Thankfully I have a Master System, but I would like to play my Game Gear games again.
How many master system games did you try in the game master on the Sega game gear and out of the ones you played how many didn't work? Was it the usual thing cover in spit and stick it in?
I played through Phantasy Star on my game gear. It was amazing and the only game I really played much on the system. The port of road rash was decent though.
Good news mark, there is now a prototype gamegear to mastersystem adaptor wich maps start to pause and it maps the higher colorpallet to the mastersystem’s lower colorpallet while all stereo panning signals are getting ignoired in order to convert stereo to mono, This prototype for what i,ve seem works really well,BUT still,, everything will be viewed in a smaller window size and there can be garbitch tile set around the screen, but likely you could cover that with a costumible screen overlay, Now if only that device will be redefined to also work on the master convertor for the genesis, that would be great.
I had Powerstrike 2 on my Master System :) .I bought a Master System 2, my first console , when the system was already pretty old, when the Mega Drive was also getting pretty old and the PS1 was already out, when i was 15 in 1996 (though i had been playing cousins and friends NESs, Master Systems, Mega Drives, Commodore 64s, Amstrads, Gameboys and arcade games since the late 80s - i only played a Super Nintendo once in a shop :) ) a big reason i got it then is its' price had fallen to very pocket money friendly levels - i got the system for £30 and the ten or so games i bought for it between 96 and 98 were £10 or less each. While also pretty cheap then, the Mega Drive was still a tiny bit dear in comparison, about £60 for the system and about £20 for its' games. I sold the system and my ten or so games to a cousin for £50 in 98 to help fund my purchase of a PS1, though part of me wishes i kept it or went looking for a it a few years later to see if that cousin still had it or still wanted it :) .
I wish there was a way to do this the other way around and play Game Gear games on my Master System... or better yet, play Game Gear games on a Power Base Converter, in a 32x, on a Genesis, on top of a Sega CD... yeah... I need that in my life...
Game Gear is more powerful than the Master System ( faster, better colors, and Graphics) yes both are 8 bit and are both from same technology standpoint. Question does this converter work on a McWill upraded Game Gear? Or the Majesco versions?
That Taito game that doesn't work on a TV but works on the Gear Master might be a PAL game. If that's the case, would that mean the Game Gear itself has a 50 Hz screen?
The reason it doesn't work the other way around is because the GG was made after the SMS, and thus is the one which actually has a compatibility mode. While they both display only 32 colors at a time, the GG has way more colors to choose from. There are adapters these days, but they thus have to have the electronics to convert the onscreen colors to the nearest SMS-compatible equivalents or else it'll just display all wrong. The SMS also is higher res than the GG, so without the mode-switching capability that the GG has, the GG game on an SMS would be forced to display with the screen space of an SMS. This doesn't sound bad at first, and that's often true for games which were made for both systems in the first place, but not all GG games take kindly to this. Most GG-only games will display garbage in the screen space that doesn't exist on an actual GG.
Hey Mark, you ever thought of getting a refurbished Game Gear so it'll have a better screen? There's people that will mod a Game Gear and replace the screen with a high quality LCD screen. I've seen the results and it's beautiful.
If you get the TV Tuner for the Gamegear, you can play Genesis on your Gamegear. I always thought it was scummy seeing Sonic the Hedgehog for Genesis superimposed onto the Gamegear screen when I was a kid.
+MadSeason Some of us fans got together to donate for a Patreon campaign and now the show will continue to go on! Here you go: www.patreon.com/ClassicGameRoom?ty=c
I think the reason why Game Gear games can't run on a Master System, is the GG is slightly more powerful, or at least has a bigger palate. Compare some of the Sonic GG games that later got MS ports.
While not exactly kosher, as you yanks say, you could use the SMS emu function on the Everdrive MD to run Gamegear games, just patch the rom of the game, a game you already own, of course, and it should work.... should.....
Is it just me or does anyone else hate to see sun faded boxes? Yet we still see classic game shop owners setting them up in their windows. If I ran a shop I would either buy UV blocking glass windows or I would print the covers out and let those get faded. If money were no object I would set up an array of monitors displaying several copies of Truxton at the same time.
I just wonder how do they fit the Master System screen (256 x 192) inside of the Game Gear screen (160 x 144) Oh well, it must be really neat to have a way to play your favourite console games on-the-go **coughTurboExpressCough**
+Ruko Michiharu I looked around the internet and techdocs etc and seems like the game gear video is actually RGB analog at some point, and its video chip has the same video modes as the SMS, so what happens is that the screen acts like an actual tv and does the scaling analogically.
Just remember that the game gear have that tv tuner adapter that allows its screen to pick actual television, then think on the video chip output being "television signal" as well and bob's your uncle.
I had the chance to buy one of these. Then I remembered the reason why I hardly use my GG iz because of how shitty the screen is. I have to recap mine but even when my GG was new I remember it wasn't the best. That's probably why I played the Gameboy allot more. When the lighting was good the Gameboy screen is easier to see. That and the games and much better battery life were more appealing to me. I remember the batteries that were dead on the game gear would still work on my Gameboy for another hour before the red light turned off indicating the batteries were dead.
so weird that the gameboy crushed this.. backlit color screen that can play all SMS games with adapter and still a great library of GG games.. sure gameboy had over a thousand games but it was so limited graphically and screen wise..and you still had like 600 games to choose from if you combined GG and SMS libraries.. I was a sega fanboy at this stage of my life that's for sure (and then genesis, but loved Snes as well, then Saturn, but loved PS1 as well, hated N64 cause of controller, then never used nintendo again till my current switch which I adore now).
SBG Haseo Yes I had one actually. It was this huge bulky thing that I never really used because it was was so awkward and the battery life was so terrible on it. Worse than AA batteries even
I am able to sustain my existence out of the belief that we inhabit a multi-verse and in one of these alternate realities the Dreamcast 4 is the dominant video game system, having long since destroyed Sony and Nintendo (Microsoft does not exist in this reality). I must find a way to get there some day...
I can play Game Gear games on a tv WITH cheat code capability AND real-time save states, I can do that with my Genesis, NES, SNES, N64, Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, intellivusion, and colecovision. Not only that, I can use ANY controller for the mentioned systems for ANY game on ANY system. Why? Because I have the most BAD ASS game system in the universe of course, the WII!!!
We NEED something that will allow the Game Gear library to be played on a television. Working Game Gears are only getting harder to find, and even if you do, that display was garbage when it was new.

Now you can play Sonic for the Master System on the Game Gear, instead of Sonic for the Game Gear! Which is totally valid because Sonic for the Master System is easier because of the bigger view.

Your that ninja!!!
Kept you gaming huh?
It was called the Master Gear in Europe
alex ojideagu The game gear or the accessory?
Sean LeccaTwo The accessory
Why was the intro voiceover redone for CGR Mark III? It doesn't sound nearly as good as the CGR Mark II version.
+Blastfrog I believe he said in a previous video that this voice over is temporary. Apparently he is still working on a definitive version oh and EDF! EDF!

I didn't even know this existed! Awesome video! :D
I always watch the thank you's at the end just to hear mark say. NEW JERSEY!!!!!
FINALY,after 5 years of reviewing the game gear, mark did eventualy reviewed the master convertor,i own both stuff as well but only rarely play on it for a while but it’s soo enjoyeble. for 5 to 10 minutes.
I love it when you review Sega products. :)
The Sega Master Gear Game Gear Master Blaster... Thingy.

+ReppeNThA707 but he's not dead
Better than anything the Fine Bros have made
This guy and Angry video game are still my favorites. Naturally the older dudes know what's best when it comes to retro gaming

Punkwithspunk 7th gen is PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii (and DS and PSP)
I used to have one of these. It was useful my master system had been sold the year before I got my game gear but I still had most of the great games.
So glad CGR survived a very nearly untimely death. I'd sit through 10 minutes of thank yous per video just to have my CGR fix!
Johnny John I got some bad news for yoy
I think the question on everyone's mind is "Does it come with Snail Maze?"
I can't stop watching his vids

I'm always hoping he says "NEW JERSEY" every episode. I was pleased today. Quite pleased.
The fact the convertor doesn't sit completely flush with the top of the Game Gear bothers me. Part of sticks out above the cartridge slot.
I played through Phantasy Star on my game gear. It was amazing and the only game I really played much on the system. The port of road rash was decent though.

damn, when I heard u were reviewing the vita, I forgot how big it is!
+John Square Funny.
Can it play the sega master system version of ghostbusters?
"Obey your master! master! mastergear" lol
I've replaced my Gameboy, TurboExpress, and Nomad with better screens, but there's still no GameGear screen upgrade (that I know of). :/
Game Gear screen upgrade .... Google McWill. It's the best.
I had Powerstrike 2 on my Master System :) .I bought a Master System 2, my first console , when the system was already pretty old, when the Mega Drive was also getting pretty old and the PS1 was already out, when i was 15 in 1996 (though i had been playing cousins and friends NESs, Master Systems, Mega Drives, Commodore 64s, Amstrads, Gameboys and arcade games since the late 80s - i only played a Super Nintendo once in a shop :) ) a big reason i got it then is its' price had fallen to very pocket money friendly levels - i got the system for £30 and the ten or so games i bought for it between 96 and 98 were £10 or less each.

what sega genesis games from the wii virtual console would you recommend besides sonic?
Nicolas Cortés Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkatron,Dynamite Heddy, Vectorman,Shining Force1&2,Shinobi 3, Monster World 4, Phantasy Star 4
Gunstar and both shinning force games
CGR fans are super rare in the Western states outside of California, Natalie you go girl!
I totally had one of these! Nice.
Is there a adapter for genesis games
how many Ampere ouput from adapter ?
I wish there was a way to do this the other way around and play Game Gear games on my Master System... or better yet, play Game Gear games on a Power Base Converter, in a 32x, on a Genesis, on top of a Sega CD... yeah... I need that in my life...
I have a European model UK variant
Will it work on any game gear cause mine is an American one
Lord Karnage just a questiong were do you get your games?
he buys them and people donate a lot to him
People send them in through a P.O. Box.
Game Gear is more powerful than the Master System ( faster, better colors, and Graphics) yes both are 8 bit and are both from same technology standpoint. Question does this converter work on a McWill upraded Game Gear? Or the Majesco versions?
I don't think there were any major hardware changes on the game gear so it should work on all models
I need to get one of these.
That Taito game that doesn't work on a TV but works on the Gear Master might be a PAL game. If that's the case, would that mean the Game Gear itself has a 50 Hz screen?
Can u use a "Game Gear Game Genie and Gear Master" at the same time?
Ah can it also pay megadrive games?
Heard a rumour the retron 5 was going to get game gear support. Would love that.
they unveiled the Master System/Game Gear adapter not too long ago, and it works with both SMS cartridges and cards
So, all the screen crunch problems with some master sysem games ported to game gear were avoidable......... eh.
The reason it doesn't work the other way around is because the GG was made after the SMS, and thus is the one which actually has a compatibility mode. While they both display only 32 colors at a time, the GG has way more colors to choose from. Daily healthy dose of CGR
Where the hell have I been, why did I not know about this????
can u bring back the intro from last year?
This was an official SEGA Gamegear add-on, most of the ones online now are repros.
for the longest time I thought he said "Spanish from earth classic game room broadcasts...." but I finally figured out he says banished

+TheGuyWhoIsSitting how that? Removing the tuner antenna and plugging in the AV cable from the Genesis, or how?
Daniel Ziltener The TV tuner has a composite hook up. Someone did a video playing XBOX 360 on it.
I thought gamegear had a lower internal resolution so ports had to be cropped.
A portable master system is awesome!
So is the channel not going to end? I'm confused.

what no vectrex support :(
Master Gear was the OG, Sega manufactured converter. The Gear Master was a later unit.
The master gear converter was an official acessory made by sega
Lmao he used the same voice clip saying New Jersey for both this video and the SMS console review

The Game Gear would be my favorite handheld ever if it had a good screen and a good, rechargeable battery.
+sprdvx I think there was a rechargeable battery pack you could buy for it, but good luck finding one that still works over 20 years later.
SBG Haseo Yes I had one actually. It was this huge bulky thing that I never really used because it was was so awkward and the battery life was so terrible on it. Worse than AA batteries even
+sprdvx Ah yes, the infamous battery dildo.
+sprdvx
Well you can get a replacement lcd in it which looks amazing!. Good rechargable battery? You can get one in every store.
***** Its a Game Sack reference bro.
It's all about the colour palette (not the 'power'). The GG had 4098 colours compared to the MS's 128. Shame about its resolution though.
Never knew that existed, and I had a Game Gear.
So many dots on the screen in some sort of matrix.
I have the Hes mater gear converter, made by Hes, i got mine when i got my GG 😁👍
There's a hack of Power Strike II to play the game on the Master System!!
Just search for GG Aleste II Master system!

For some odd reason,I owned this.
ash ketchum's hat is actually a sega hat
Now you can play Sonic for the Master System on the Game Gear, instead of Sonic for the Game Gear! Which is totally valid because Sonic for the Master System is easier because of the bigger view.
It's Dannon. Like, the yogurt.
Imagine playing the Master System version of Sonic the hedgehog on the Game Gear
He's the Lord.
If you own a Sega Gear Master converter for your Sega Game Gear, then you don't need a Sega Master System.
If you have a everdrive x7 you don’t need either
**NEW JERSEY!**
I forgot what shit the Game Gear screen was. Ugh. I'm sure it looks worse because this is being shot off screen. But yeesh...
ROCKYS STILL RELEVANT!
Every Game Gear that I've opened has had corroded contacts due to faulty electrolytic capacitors. I understand wanting hardware to be original, but there's *nothing magical* about the caps Sega used. They're like batteries in a way: they dry out, lose potency, and leak over time. Have someone change them, for crying out loud, haha. Heck - message me and I'll quote you a price. I'll even change out the cfl backlight for a led panel so you can play it for longer than 3 hours on 6 AA's ;)
why is this channel different there are only 20 some thousand there should be at least over 400000 subs
NICE HAT!!!
ask luke morris to create a master Gear for you. :3
My best friend had this
I bet you can do a good Homer Simpson impersonation :)
I'll take a Dreamcast 2......Thank you very much
Got it 😎
if only they made something like this for the psvita so we can play psp umds
