I'd never heard of Mappy until this video, but I have played it before on one of those Chinese 10,000 game NES knock-offs as a kid. So I knew this game as "Mice Climber" (I guess they translated the name of the game wrong or something).
Lol--I was thinking the same thing. Though, in Mark's defense, it really isn't the most common game out there, by any means. I only vaguely remember it growing up, but finally got around to playing it a bunch around 2004/5 with a Ms. Pac-Man Plug n Play I got from Goodwill. I'm really hoping that the Namco Museum on the Switch has secret unlockable games with Mappy on it as one of them.
This game is so underrappreciated. Mappy is legit a really great game, and is a huge favorite game of mine. The Game Gear version is really cool, but in my opinion, the original Arcade version and NES/Famicom version are the best versions of the game.
Hey Mark. Great game, great video! On the bonus screens you can get all the balloons by busting through the trampolines quicker. To do that, bounce against the walls to return to the trampoline faster. You can also do that on the normal levels without dying as long as there is another trampoline below the one you are breaking. Your bonus multiplier grows as you chain collect the flashing objects. It's likely that your next flashing object will be in a far corner off-screen leaving you chasing all over the level to chain them. At least in the arcade game you can open and close the doors with the jump button while you are far away but facing them on the same platform......by telekinesis I guess. It's handy when you have a kitty suddenly jump up on the other side while you are being chased. They have to run into a closed door, which will knock them out and allow you to escape, unless you have two kitties with a gap between them. There is also a neat trick you can use to swing back and forth through the doorway to knock kitties out left and right. You have to start out on the same side to which the door is already opened and . The timing is really tricky but it is a cool technique.
Thanks so much for bringing this arcade classic back to the light! I adore this game and how to maximize on your score through multipliers and catching that fat cat behind items. Such a hectic satisfying game and a great old school chase frenzy to addict yourself to! Thanks as always for an AWESOME vid!!!👍👍
“Here’s a game you don’t hear about very often” That’s not entirely true. As I’m typing this I’m still in my late teens and a lot of people my age really like Mappy and have fond memories of playing it on one of those plug ‘n play consoles with the 5 Namco games on them.
I remember buying a loose copy of this game some years ago from his magic trick store that also happened to sell used video games. I loved it to death.
Mappy is a really spectacular game! Cool to know Mark really enjoys this game. I always wondered what’s his thoughts of it since he’s a huge fan of Namco Arcade games.
@@Duttroid Actually, these NES Multicarts has been around since the 80's and the 90's. And the Famicom version of Mappy is commonly included in lot of these Multicarts, along with Circus Charlie, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Twin Bee, Super Mario Bros etc. In the early 2000's, there are still Multicarts, and at the same time there's also lot of Famiclones which basically function the same as NES Multicarts except it's built in a bootleg console, and in majority cases it's in a controller that acts like a console. Super Joy is a prime example of this.
I have the arcade version on PS2, and the Famicom version. For years this was one of my favorites to play, even as a kid back when it came out. The sequels weren't quite as good, other than the first sequel (which only got an X68000 port) Hopping Mappy.
The writing is fantastic, character development unmatched, graphics ahead of its time, story truly moving. overall mappy is the greatest game of all time easily 10/10
There’s a couple different plug and play video games I have one caller Ms.Pac-Man arcade cabinet? I think that’s the tile game runs well on that one and it’s a fairly comfortable play then I have a Pac-Man shaped plug in play and the game actually runs great on that and it looks golden then I have one of the my arcade handhelds and it runs pretty well but it seems more like the nes port
Mark finally plays Mappy!!! :D I always wonder what's his opinion of Mappy, since he's a huge fan of Namco arcade games :) I'm happy he enjoys the game a lot, it's a really amazing game.
I did the mod for Mark for this Game Gear. It is a an additional board that gets added, along with you HAVE to replace the capacitors. etim.net.au/ggtv/ggtv.htm for the board. I also replaced the backlight and screen cover. There is also a "McWills" RGB and LCD replacement, which is supposed to be excellent, but I have not tried that. retrorgb.com/gamegearrgb.html Needless to say, you need to have all the tools and experience with soldering and desoldering to consider this mod. As a shameless plug, here is a link to my repair/mod services: retrogame.cyberphreak.com/2016/11/30/repair-services/
One dislike after just 130 views? What's wrong with you people? What's not to like? Great review Mark. Looking forward to the MUSHA feature review arriving in the next few weeks ish.
Wait-no, Valkyrie no Boken in Famicom. That’s a hidden gem right there. Got it on one of those NES multicarts. When I found a frickin RPG on a NES multicart I nearly shat myself through the roof.
I kind of desperately want this now that I know there's a fairly good looking portable port. At the same time my game gears are both fried. one of them the screen is absolutely useless, they other you can only see it from like a 45 degree angle
I remember I made a drawing of a police mouse, sunglasses and gun and stuff, for one of art classes. because I really liked disney and police tv series back in 80-90s just a random memory)
+Chaos Are you kidding me? Not only Mappy came out before Flicky, but both games are different enough to be different experiences. I know, I played both of these games. So no, this is not a Flicky clone. Honestly, in my opinion, Mappy is a much better game than Flicky. Flicky is still a great game though.
frankly that's how I feel about arcades in general. There's like so much stuff to play I never spend too much on anything. But I used to play the hell out of this on a MS pac-man plug and play my brother had as a kid.
I can't believe Mark never played Mappy before. I actually have more experience with a classic game than he does and that makes me happy.
You could say it makes you *Mappy*
...ha
I bet hes a least heard of Mappy. Personally i didn't play it until it came on the Wii Virtual Console. Great Game.
I'd never heard of Mappy until this video, but I have played it before on one of those Chinese 10,000 game NES knock-offs as a kid. So I knew this game as "Mice Climber" (I guess they translated the name of the game wrong or something).
Sounds like they mixed up the title of the N.E.S. classic, Ice Climber, with Mappy.
Lol--I was thinking the same thing. Though, in Mark's defense, it really isn't the most common game out there, by any means. I love Mappy.
I remember playing this on a Namco Game Collection one time. And it was excellent.
Mappy is my shit. Played the plug and play as a kid, have it on ds now.
As soon as I clicked on this video, I hit the like button immediately before the video even started. That's how much I love Mappy!
Mappy's one of my absolute favorite oldschool arcade games. Used to play the Famicom version a lot as a kid (on a Nes multicart) and still do. Namco
Mappy was a great and fun game to play. Played it for hours.
I adore Mappy
I played the arcade version, and yes they do play the same. I love this game I think it's better than Dig Dug or Pacman, I also love all the music
I played this on a plug-and-play controller/system back in 2008. Great simple addictive game!
There's also a Mappy Land, a part 2, not as good though
I love 1980's arcade games! Mappy is my #1 favorite arcade game! Great gameplay and review. 😉 thank you for posting this video. I'm a big Mappy fan.
This game is so underrappreciated. Mappy is legit a really great game, and is a huge favorite game of mine. The Game Gear version is really cool, but in my opinion, the original Arcade version and NES/Famicom version are the best versions of the game.

I didn't remember that i used to play this game back when i was i child. Thanks Mark!
I remember buying a loose copy of this game some years ago from his magic trick store that also happened to sell used video games. I loved it to death.
When I saw your review of Flickey and was like, you should do a review of Mappy! and here it is!
I played this game a lot in my famicom in the 90's. Great game.
this is my first cartridge game for my family computer back in the 90's .
I got my Heyzoos/Ethel comics in the mail today and they're fuckin' rad. And so is Mappy.
This was always one of my favorite games on a Namco plug n play I got when I was younger
SerCubez SETH i have the same plug and play
Have loved the arcade game for years, never seen Game Gear version. Now I have to hunt it down!
Mappy is a really spectacular game! Cool to know Mark really enjoys this game. I always wondered what’s his thoughts of it since he’s a huge fan of Namco Arcade games.
There is Mappy Land on the NES too. Also, you can use the Analogue NT Mini with the Kevtris firmware and Game Gear core for recording.
Regular Mappy is also on FC and tons of multicarts, some of which were available in the US through home shopping channel specials in the early 2000s.
I will go check out the famicom version that I didn't know existed. Thanks for the recommendation!

I like the Robotech poster. I'm actually watching it for the first time on Netflix.
I have this on my plug n play. It's decent

I think this game should've been included on the first Namco museum disc. Cool game; I learned about it from an Arcade Fever book.
Great stuff I loved my Gamegear!
Most people who knows about mappy
Is a true namco fan
this game came with namco museum for the ds a while ago
Did Mappy find ED Station for CGR?
The writing is fantastic, character development unmatched, graphics ahead of its time, story truly moving. overall mappy is the greatest game of all time easily 10/10
I 100% agree with you
I now this game only because my dad had bought a classic arcade games collection for the PC back in the day. I cant remember which one though.
I love old games so munch fun to play like duck hunt and Mario
Love this game, played it all the time on chinese nes bootlegs
If the Game Gear is a portable system how is the image appearing on a TV set?
Its been modded for tv out
What frame rate does your camera run?

WHOA! Blue game gear, where did you get that Mark?
Was that Gamegear modded or does it play on your TV naturally?
what did you have it modded to - VGA?
Kirk D Composite
How do you mod game gear to play on tv?

I don't care about this game but this version is a good arcade port,i personaly rather play nintendo arcade games.
Game plays well on the PS Vita. Namco Musuem Vol 2
Looks very much like the Famicom version but slower. Impressive.
3:50 D-dog? They are cats
originally released for the famicon never released for nes
In what way has that Game Gear been modded?
I really think this game should get a reboot with a better story.
They sent a game gear into space wow that's impressive
Yes, Mappy!
He's so happy playing Mappy. Looks like a 5 yrs kid. XD
One dislike after just 130 views? What's wrong with you people? What's not to like? Great review Mark. Looking forward to the MUSHA feature review arriving in the next few weeks ish.
I love your videos!!!
i love this game. Fun yet frustrating.
Easy to play...hard to master.... The best kind of game!
If we get a truxton VR game I know for a fact that mark will not come out of his intergalactic house
5:55 Box art really is awesome. Who drew it?
Tower of Druaga. Do it.
YetikidX68k No. Dont...
Yes, do. Arcade version, Namco Museum for PS1
YEAAAAAHHH!!

I have played the NES sequel, Mappy Land, but never the original.
Dimensiom Dude, the original is pretty fun, once you find your rhythm
cool
The NES version is the best! :D
rip shifty look ;-;
I wonder how many times a week mark gets EDF! Shouted at him?
playing this on my d's is the best
First Name Last Name Oh yeah
How do you Mod it?
Better graphics than Mass Effect!
I've never played Mappy...
+Michirin9801 I recommend you to play Mappy one day, it's a really amazing game.
I've been playing Mappy since I was a kid, and I'm yelling all my strategies at Mark. He's not listening.
Michael Wolfe Close the door on them cats!!
kind of looks like Flicky
TES MAPPY
That is one rad modded game gear!
I remember I made a drawing of a police mouse, sunglasses and gun and stuff, for one of art classes.
because I really liked disney and police tv series back in 80-90s
just a random memory)
I recommend you play Mappy one day, it's a really great game.
The background music is engraved deep, deep into me.
I play the crap out of this on arcade and later on fanicom very good game
You can close the door and open it again to knock the enemy down you scrub
It is kind of like Pac-Man where you eat all the dots while avoiding the ghosts.
Flicky clone.
Actually, Mappy came first.
+Chaos Are you kidding me? Not only Mappy came out before Flicky, but both games are different enough to be different experiences. I know, I played both of these games. This dude always annoyed me in Ridge Racer 3D
So japan created furries?
Asher Meow
*Namco
Mappy's cool for like 2 minutes and then you want to play something better.
I highly disagree, Mappy is one of those games you have fun for hours non-stop. Every time I play Mappy, I don't think about playing another game.
The game becomes way more fun when you figure out that you can slam the door behind you in the cats' face
frankly that's how I feel about arcades in general. There's like so much stuff to play I never spend too much on anything. But I used to play the hell out of this on a MS pac-man plug and play my brother had as a kid.
