Bloody Knuckles on the Punching Bag?

  • Are your knuckles scabbed and bleeding after punching a heavybag? This video covers how to prevent cut knuckles and how to quickly heal the injury.
Bloody knuckles is common when going bare-knuckle on a punching bag, especially one that is made of canvas (leather/vinyl are softer and more forgiving on the skin). Glancing or grazing punches often scrape the skin off of your knuckles, so be sure to hit with direct shots. If your knuckles are cut in between the pinky and ring finger, this is a sign that you are hitting incorrectly -- you should make contact with all four knuckles or even the first two index and middle finger.
It also helps to keep a slightly looser, flatter fist upon impact so that your knuckles don't protrude out as much. This will prevent the skin from stretching and tearing. You must be careful, however, not to have a limp wrist or jam your thumb.
In order to heal scabbed knuckles, you must give your hands time to rest. This may take a few days or even weeks. That is why prevention is your best bet. However a trick to speed up the process is to cover your hands with petroleum jelly, then wear gloves for a few hours or as you sleep. This will rehydrate your hands and help with the healing process.
All of this being said, bare-knuckle is very dangerous and should be done with caution. You risk hand and wrist injury, so it is recommended that you use handwraps and gloves when hitting the heavybag.
If you wish to strengthen your hands, watch this video on knuckle conditioning:

In competition you have to were gloves, MMA or boxing, so you should focus on hitting with the gloves (not talking about self-defense).
But if you really want hard knuckles then you should hit downward in bucket of sand, and squeeze wet jute sack

Focus because you have to ease in your punches bare knuckle on the heavybag to avoid an injury. With the padding of boxing gloves you can hit pretty much full force and you’re all good.

My issue is that whenever I go bareknuckle I start punching harder and harder because the increased speed excites me and then I'm a a point where my wrists can't take it anymore where it's usually the shoulder that absorbs the hooks and its easier to negate the impact of your own punch but bareknuckle can be dangerous especially for a power puncher

I do it until I start to bleed, and I punch everything, the ground, a stick, personally I dented the side of my tall freezer with side punches (I didn't know or think to punch regularly so I punched with my knuckles/ hands sideways, I have a bunch of dents on my freezer and my knuckles are definitely scarred) leaving the freezer with a single punch to be covered with four small dents from my knuckles that are on top of one another and some other dents that are also punches but are proper punches (knuckles forward with your hand not sideways like I did before many times, leaving vertical instead of horizontal dents 👊🏿) -Jack

It took me a full year to get my hands and wrists conditioned enough to be hitting my heavy bag just as hard bare knuckle as I do with gloves. At the beginning, I could hit the bag no more than 5 times at half power. Now I can do a full 100% workout for an hour. But it took a loooong time. I even had to do no punching at all for one month because my hands were so jacked up that I could barely hold things. But they healed stronger.
Same thing with conditioning the shins. Mine are still pretty weak, but can do a few dozen times on my heavy bag before breaking instead of only a few.
It takes a lot of patience

I usually get cut up on my right hand knuckles from throwing hooks. It takes me about 3 days to fully heal. But what I do in the meantime is just train my other arm or even practice kicking and all that while my right hand is healing

  • @wowf0rl1f3
    @wowf0rl1f3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I used to have that problem, my muddle knuckle is way further out than my other knuckles and regardless i still get that problem, i just heal fast and i found that taking a nice hot shower once a day and washing your hands regularly with vaseline and/ or triple antibiotic cream with gauze while you sleep (when most natural healing happens) and im good in a couple days. My suggestion if you dont have gloves or wraps is you just work on technique lightly and as the callouses build start bumping up the power slowly. Never be too eager to beat the shit out of the bag, it is a tool, and like any tool you learn to do things safely. Nobody had a good time hammering something the first time

At home I did my bag work on an 80 lbs canvas heavy bag and rarely wore gloves or pads. There were differences to both but I felt that I benefited from training both ways. Going BK on heavy bags means having a good wrist conditionning, a very good straight line with fore arm and wrist. Striking vertically (power line) or 45° angle on jabs, cross and hook and avoid horizontal strikes (except the fact you can go horizontally for some body strikes). All or most guys really involved in BK will told that. It will avoid injury to wrist and knuckles. My humble tips . I work on heavy bag 90% BK and 10% only wraped and no need to go full power because Gloves give bad habits when you go BK. Gloves and BK striking are 2 different science as Boxing and BK.

another thing I like to keep in my gear bag is a small tube of super glue (or contact cement). super glue will help with small cuts on your hands. just make sure you wash your hands before applying a small amount on the cut, and allow the glue to completely air dry.

man I grazed my knuckles after just 2 rounds of mitt work today😂I hadn’t done any boxing for 2 yrs, but this was just too much. Can’t imagine how fragile my hands are. My hands were as protected as possible, I even had the gel thing inside the wrap. 😢

What’s up Shane? Shane, what are your thoughts about martial arts falling into the wrong hands? I know its very rare, but there are those who learn martial arts for the wrong reasons. Some people learn martial arts primarily to pick fights and beat people up for fun. Even though it's rare, it does happen. Please tell me your thoughts Shane.

I remember when I was in hot springs at ACTI, I had on some boxing gloves and I was working the heavyweight bag I kept punching it nonstop so much so my knuckles started bleeding I didn’t notice it, I just kept punching and punching and punching after 20 minutes I calmed down pulled off the gloves noticing my hands were messed up but I was unbothered by it, it felt good and I liked it licking my bloody knuckles, every ounce of rage, was burning within me, I felt no pain.

ime 9 times out of 10 if you are getting skinned knuckles, you are dropping your punch after you hit and creating extra friction on the knuckle. Straight forward and straight back and a slight down ward angle to make room for you follow up punch. I'm an outlier, but I'm very against training with gloves on unless your training for an event where you will be wearing those same sized gloves.

Targeting is essential. Have to keep your strikes tight and in range. Bareknuckle training daily 18yrs and that is a very rare occurrence because I only fire shots that I actually see, target, and adjust for. No careless hooks, no cuts. I get closer to tearing open the shin where the skin is thin than knuckles.

I had really soft knuckles when I started boxing but cos of my weights training my hands was rough, so I did go bare skin for 3 weeks 3 times a week and had salt water baths, it hurts it only makes a tiny bit of difference you will bleed, if you have skinny wrists don’t do it you’ll end up with tendon damage cos you have no support from muscle and fat, I’m not 1 and a half years into boxing knuckle press-ups work better have less damage but you need to do a lot of them if you want harder knuckles (skin around the knuckles) and stronger wrists, do pull ups aswell

I've been doing martial arts and hitting canvas heavy bags bare knuckle for years without any issues, but now I got dry skin there (not even cuts from the bag directly) that broke open after using my hands. There are two possible factors that have changed in recent months. One, the bag at the new gym is heavier, and two I've been swimming a lot which could be drying out my skin. Would just wraps without gloves help at all? Using gloves actually kept me from using proper form for bare-fisted self-defense, and I ditched them years ago.

I just bought the Everlast C3 Foam bag that has a layer of canvas with foam thinking it would be softer on my hands for punching... well turns out my knuckles are getting ripped apart even after wearing foam hand wraps, I should probably try punching with gloves though.
