Backhoe Hydraulic Repair - Loader Does not Lift Part 2

  • CAT 416C Backhoe. The bucket lift suddenly became very weak and would hardly lift half way up. Working another control would seem to make the bucket lift momentarily. All the other hydraulics still worked flawlessly. The problem turned out being the o-ring seals on the check valves(resolvers) in the hydraulic valve group.
    In my internet research on the the symptoms I was having others have reported the same problems and said that this problem is the result of the pump not being triggered because a blown out seal in an adjacent control valve in the control group. In most cased the check valve for the valve for the control that is not working is not the issue but another one in the control network.
    Here is some reading I found helpful:

    Extremely helpful. New seals below did not help 428c lift bucket. Going to try side seals. Thanks a lot. Must have taken a lot of extra time and effort.

    Good video...... Fluid goes from oil tank to the filter to the pump to the control valves then to cylinders, any trash returns back to the bottom of tank. if it floats around the filter will catch it before it goes back to the pump and components. I'm getting ready to do ALL my control valves and you have been tons of help. Thanks you sir !!!!!

      Happy I could be of help. Note that on my machine the fluid tank directly feeds the pump before being filtered. The fluid is filtered before being returned to the tank. My guess is if it were filtered before the pump there would not be enough pressure to push the fluid through the filters and the pump would be starved. I think this is a common setup with hydraulic equipment.

    I started doing my 416 today with official o-rings. One set of the O-rings actually had Catapillar written on each oring ,in tiny print,with the part number, pretty amazing. THESE ARE NOT JUST some OVER PRICED Horrible Freight o-rings , they look and feel very special.

      Some of mine had part numbers on them too. I was impressed as well. You get what you pay for. From my limited experience CAT has good quality stuff. And the support from the dealership has been great. I've ordered parts at 4pm and had then the next morning ready for pick up at 7am several times.

    Thank you for this fantastic video. I had same problems with hydraulic on my Caterpillar 438B. First I replace seals on resolver 1, after some time issues came again because of resolver 2. My question is, are there some other seals on the hydraulic valve that should be changed to prevent similar stops. Thank you.

    • @Goldenfab
      @Goldenfab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm happy to hear I helped someone. I'm not really an expert and don't know what else could cause this problem. All I can say is make sure you have checked all the resolvers. Best of luck.

    So I did this and am still having problems with the loader bucket not lifting. Also the power steering gets difficult to turn every once in awhile Also, the loader joystick catches when I move it all the way to the left (curl). Any ideas?

    • @jerweave
      @jerweave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I lifts VERY slowly when I rev the throttle all the way up.

    • @Goldenfab
      @Goldenfab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jerweave From what I do know if the bucket lifts better when another hydraulic circuit is activated then maybe there is another resolver somewhere that has a problem. If the bucket shows no improvement when activating another hydraulic circuit then maybe its something else. I don't know why the joystick catches or if its a related issue. Just my best guess. I'm not on expert on hydraulics. Best of luck getting it sorted out.
      Make sure and check out the links I put in the description.

      I'm not an expert on these either. Best I can say is if it starts working when you activate another control it might be the same issue I have. Else I really don't know. Keep searchin around on the web there is lots of info out there. Best of luck.

      I have the same problem with a 416B i replaced the 2 valves the long ones ,cause someone told me the tip shouldnt move at all so i put 2 other ones and those move too but just a lil and it did work but the rear is weak too . I already cheked all seals on both valves 1 and 2 on both valve bodys and they good,,,i repeat the front is good now

    • @Goldenfab
      @Goldenfab  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gustavodemeneghi2599 On my machine there is a valve control group in the front for the front loader and one in the back for the rear bucket. If I remember correctly any one of the two types of check valves in either of the valve control groups could cause the bucket to be weak. If you activate another hydraulic control like the loader at the same time does it make the it make the rear stronger? If so it sounds like one of the seals for the check valves is bad. If it makes no difference maybe the problem is somewhere else. I hope this helps. I am not an expert on these I just happened to figure out what was wrong with mine so I wanted to share with others.

    • @gustavodemeneghi2599
      @gustavodemeneghi2599 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If i do activate another control yeah it gets very strong specially if i activate the front one at the same time .....actually i just got done pulling out and cleaning each of the 12 valves on the rear 6 long y shorts all seals good after done it did work for few seconds then got weak again.....can you verify if u remember how did your valves looked like ? Did the tip on each one got movement or was all adjusted?

    • @Goldenfab
      @Goldenfab  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gustavodemeneghi2599 the long check valve that is called a "resolver" by caterpillar, yes the tip I remember was loose. I remember though I could blow in one end and it would seal and the other it would pass air through.
      It sounds like you have the same symptoms I had. Was there a blow o-ring seal in one of the check valves that possibly broke free and has plugged up something inside the hydraulics?
