Backhoe Hydraulic Repair - Loader Does not Lift

- CAT 416 Backhoe. The bucket lift suddenly became very weak and would hardly lift half way up. Working another control would seem to make the bucket lift momentarily. All the other hydraulics still worked flawlessly. The problem turned out being the o-ring seals on the check valves in the hydraulic valve group. There appeared to be a redesign of the check valve assembly with the new design having backing rings for the o-ring seals which makes my think this was a common failure mode. In my internet research on the the symptoms I was having others have reported the same problems and said that this problem is the result of the pump not being triggered because a blown out seal in an adjacent control valve in the control group. In most cased the check valve for the valve for the control that is not working is not the issue but another one in the control network.

Would the principle of this issue apply to other weakness issues? I have a mini excavator where the arm pull (is that what it's called?) is a bit weak. Could the issue be damaged o-rings somewhere in the system, like in this case?
I'm not an expert on this.... From what I have gathered though if your arm pull is weak and it strengthens when you operate another hydraulic control simultaneously then its probably something in the resolver network, so yes maybe damaged o-rings on the resolvers like I had. Best of luck!

Daniel Mitchell Rusty fuel tank. I learned to keep them full of fuel when not in service. I had to replace a steel tank on a diesel generator once. Sucks but works
you did that the hardest way possible... its way easier to just pull the whole valve group down...and the best fix is just to replace the whole spool valve... messing with all the check balls for the detent is a nightmare

It's usually the resolver ball assemblies that cause this problem, they're located on the side of the valve under the same style plug. be very careful because there are many different lengths to these and if you get them mixed up you can ruin the valve housing and set yourself back several thousand dollars for a new one, you were very fortunate this was your problem. 99% of the time it's not. I've been repairing hydraulics for over 30 years and the 416 cats are notorious for this problem, they should issue a recall!

I don't know but I would guess you have the same problem - one of the resolvers is not functioning.

That wasn't a wrench it was a socket and ratchet
The vernacular in my neck of the woods is such that all socket and ratchet assemblies are wrenches but not all wrenches are socket ratchet assemblies.

However, my back bucket won't lift but I get all the other motions. I checked the seals and all were good but i don't know if a ball bearing was missing! Could that cause loss of motion ?
Sorry I don't know enough to say for sure but I think not having a check valve could possibly cause the problem. Hope you get it going again!

Chris Johns I have not worked on it in a while. I'm not giving up on it. Just ran out of time and money for now. Focusing on building a new shop now and then I'll see about resuming the project.
