    We roll most of cereal crops in the spring. It helps to grow a stronger crop because u knockt once the plant over and it develops a stronger plant. Usualy u gad a bit a bigger yield but its not much stronger plant.

    The three leaf sprit of oats/wheat/barley thickens the root bed. This creates a thicker growing bed with further stems, producing more crop.

    That’s all open, get in the trees.. like by leoville we used to go camping at this one lake it’s really popular now, but no one knew about it when we started camping there. We used to have to fog the bush, then you’d sometimes still need a mosquito tent.. bugs can be TERRIBLE in Northern Saskatchewan.

    Have you ever thought of putting a spray bar on the land roller to spray herbicide and kill weeds and roll in one pass? I guess usually you roll before weeds are up. But it might work in this situation. Or to add some thiosol fertilizer

    Mike, I think you were smart to prep the land first, before seeding. Being your first time on that land, not knowing what it was like, it wouldn’t have been good if you had snagged an opener on a deadhead you couldn’t see, because it was covered with grass. I also get a lot of satisfaction seeing the row by row progress. I’m very visually stimulated. I love seeing flatbed loads of skid steers…all in a line on a trailer; or other repetitive items, etc. I also love seeing the dirt turning over from a plow, or smoothing from a harrow, etc. patterns…I love them!

    Hi Mike, I have heard from a farmer that when you hit a cereal crop in it's early growth stage and slightly damage the main stem, the crop get more "sidearms" next to the main plant. So if you can provide enough water + fertilizer for the whole plant, you should get a bigger yield.

    • @Northern_Farmer

      That's usually why farmers around here roll it when it's young

    • @gacikpl
      @gacikpl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Europe farmers using farrows for that. The Best effects are in winter wheat or rye. Harrow is also pulling out a lot of weeds, wheat is growing new stems and usually plant is healtier than normal. There is a theory that this can strees plant a bit so is better prepared for some events down the season. And this is very old tactic from times when there wast any chemicals for weeds.

    The tires on that thing are beefy! And.. is rust a bad problem on those rollers? I’m surprised they don’t have some kind of coating … and I reckon stainless rollers would cost a fortune.

    Mike I have never grown any oats before, but I thought you harvested them like you do wheat or rice and get just the heads only and not skim the ground like you do when harvesting soybeans. Is that right ? Just wondering why you are worried about the rocks if you’re not going to hit them with the combine 👍

      Nobody ever wants to take a chance of putting a big rock thru the combine. A few years ago you could maybe lease or rent on while waiting for parts. Now because of covid dealers have no new or used ones in stock.

    • @tjakko4659

      Trudeau doesn't know what a farmer is or where his food comes from... So it's no surprise that he's pulling numbers out of the air without any research or consultation with farmers and/or farm groups. He would just say what is written for him and that is: "we are following the science" - which of course he has done no scientific research on... What an embarrassment 🤣🤦🏻‍♂️
