    2:40 Air goes the other way around on the compressor from what you said... It goes in at the center hole and out at the long curved tube to the intercooler / inlet manifold...

      It's a centrifugal pump. Pulls fluid in at the shaft and throws it out tangential to the perimeter.

    3:09 The wastegate doesnt only open when you let off throttle, if anything its closed when you let off the throttle... the wastegate opens during full boost, to make sure the car doesnt continue building boost and blow the internals up. You realise the wastegate lets exhaust gasses out before it reaches the wheel, so that it reduces the flow to the wheel, making less boost build.

    • @MichaelR200419
      @MichaelR200419 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A wastegate is vacuum operated and opens when you let off the throttle unless the amount of boost overcomes the “spring” or actuator in which case yes it can also open under boost

    Always check your turbo cartridge end play movement and axial movement. It should spin super free. Spin the fan with your finger quickly and it should spin at least 3 seconds.

    I bought a Sonata Turbo last year, it is a fun car to drive around compare to the camry lol. I was afraid that the turbo might be expensive to fix after the warranty is over. I do repair/replace suspensions parts and maintain my own car but never touch a turbo or opening up an engine before. Your turbo and the engine tear down have been a great help! I hope your channel keeps on growing and you can do this full time. Cheers from Florida!

    You don't have to balance turbine wheel after dissasembly if you haven't bent any of fins e.t.c. and also if you are not changing the wheel… I have taken so many turbo's appart changed bearings e.t.c. the vibration will be ever so slight, that it will last you minimum of 5 years, when the bearing will be worn out of vibrations.

    How did you know where to locate the front compressor housing, because unlike the turbine housing it didn't have a dowel pin to locate it and could be put back on anyway. Unless you used the waste gate actuator to locate it somewhat close?

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using the wastegate is one way to do it, and that would work very well, but where the 4 bolts mount to the cold side, they left a mark in the steel. The exposed steel began to rust and make the steel look different. So you can bolt it back together like that, or you can even put a mark / scratch on the cartridge and cold side to properly align it.

  • @MahmoodSuhail

    Really good clarification of all of the parts of a turbo! I'll need to rebuild mine sometime later this year and will send you an email about it because I seem to need a new exhaust turbine housing as the area where the wastegate actuator arm fits into it has worn, so I'm looking for solutions, including just chucking it for a replacement.

  • @gplusgplus2286
    @gplusgplus2286 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should also check your mounting surfaces are 100% level, as you would on an engine block. I've had a turbo that wouldnt stay mounted because of that. Of course check the exhaust manifold for level as well.

    At 3:00 he's wrong, it's backwards on cold side. The Centric pipe sucks air inwards then impellor throws it radially and the eccentric pipe is t he compressors discharge.

    Painting the hot side was quite a good decision. For the cold side, chemistry speaking,you are not correct, Aluminum actually oxidizes so quickly in very thin layer in matter of tenths of second, so painting here is just aesthetics.

    I don't know about the ceramic coat of the turbo but heat is the enemy of all turbos so things like turbo jackets and ceramic coating don't really sit well with me even if they do keep the engine bay temp down because turbo cost alot of money.

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is why the turbocharger is both oil and coolant fed. As long as you don't get the turbo red hot, and then park it, you're good. Letting a red hot turbo heat up the the oil in the cartridge and letting it sit there is what kills the turbo. As long as you let the turbo cool for a minute or two before turning off the car, you will be okay.

    • @Stavo1420
      @Stavo1420 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      milanmastracci
      Yeah but I'am also use to working with much bigger turbos like aftermarket RB25 turbos and 1JZ and 2JZ turbos which most of the time don't have coolant line just oil which barely does much for the turbos but keeps them lubricated, also they definitely get red hot.
