Fabulous in depth explanation of the causes, troubleshooting and components of the TDI over-boost problem. Demystifies it all.
What a gentlemen. Taking the time to do this and record it for all to see and learn. Thank you 👌👍
Thank you
Very nice brother i had this problem in my car i have watch your video and i have fix my car brilliant work bro happy with your work i am copy cat watching your video to fix my owen car thankyou mate mechanic they were asking me to much money but you are the man save my money double thanks mate i am not mechanic but i can do a work watching a work than i can do that work brilliant copy cat i am lol .make some more nice video sir and boss uk england
wow. not only the procedure but also the attitude of the mechanic is just marvellous.
Thank you
Mechanic? lol. The idiot didnt even know what the actuator is for!
Its a VNT Turbo, It doesnt have a Wastegate... the actuator is a variable Vein Actuator... :P
@@MightyGimp comment was 2 years ago dude... Bit behind on the times
@@RGD-Games are you mad? He clearly knows the difference in vnt and wastegate, simple word play, it's still an actuator. Most so called mechanics wouldn't even bother with this and would just tell the customer they need a new £700 turbo before labour.
Hi, I am impressed. You have made this video as much as short without missing any details right from problem description, possible causes, dismantling details with adeqaute video angle, clarity and audio details. awesome.. good..
🙏🙏❤️
Brilliant work Gerard, from a fellow Irish stuck in Tenerife with a T5 AXD overboost problem looking to get home for xmas, this has been the most informative video I've seen. thank you Mo Chara
Cheers Niall
This is when a soda blaster becomes your best friend...
Excellent job Gerard
I used this video to check my turbo on my A6. Very good video and easy to follow. Unfortunately my turbo was completely broken. Many thanks for the video
Good video, one of the better videos on TH-cam showing the whole job start to finish, something I need to get round to doing on my tdi
Ohhh thanks man!
I've just bought a copy of my A4 B7 engine, to learn from. This turbo is exactly the same as the A4 B7. Lovely work! Thanks.
I know the video is old now, but I appreciate it today. Well done.
Very good video. I have an issue with my wife's car over boosting and this has helped me understand no end. Big thumbs up.
Thanks Adrian for the kind words
That’s a great video, thank you. It allows people to see how the thing works without having to dismantle one. One point of order…….you pointed at the variable vane actuator and called it a wastegate. This turbo doesn’t have a wastegate because it is a variable vane unit. On a turbo with a wastegate the item you pointed at might be called a wastegate actuator.
Brilliant video i wish every single mechanic did his job the same way you do it
Thank you for the video.my turbo over boosted and blew an pipe.new turbo home now.
i always go for a long drive almost everyday but today my vw passat turbo charge went to a limp mode,,,, glow plug warning light flashing and loss power at the same time,,,this gives me an idea where to start looking for faults,,thanks great upload
Has to be the most detailed oriented video on turbos I've seen...#SaluteSir
Thanks Victor
Fantastic video. That it the problem i have on my Touran. So i will be ripping my turbo off and clean/replace what i need. What a class gentleman
How did you find removal of the turbo? It's on the back of the engine so did you remove from below? Did you also remove/loosen exhaust? Cheers.
Thank you for uploading, not too hard a job where special tools are required,as you say just be patient organised and tidy, take a few pictures on strip down to aid reassembly
I had a P0234 on my Mazda CX5 2.2, turned out a hose had popped off a very difficult to access turbo actuator at the rear. Aside from throwing the error code under heavy and prolonged acceleration, two symptoms were oil in the intercooler (likely from the first turbo working so hard and never swapping to second turbo), and the wastegate readings via OBD2 were unusual. Easy fix once found.
i wished i watched all of your video when putting a new core in ive never done one before and ive been compleatly confused why my car still isnt boosting. and i now see where ive went wrong its to do with the turbo fins didnt move so thank you so much im 100% certain that is my issue hopefully i havent screwed my turbo.
I would like to thank you for this video< made in a professional way< explained for simple and full detailed. I learned some new thinks thanks to you. I think my turbo needs a nice clean up, my rev is not going more then 2000rpm with pedal down< hope this clean-up will do the job. Thanks again.
Very good video, well explained. Though I'm going down the Mr Muscle way. I understand the turbo much more now. Thank you.
This is an excellent video, but at 1:56 and 3:14 that's not the wastegate. That's the vacuum-operated actuator, which is connected to the actuator rod. The actuator rod operates a variable vane on the turbo. This turbo does not have a wastegate....
yeah this dude had me thinking I myself was the idiot, thanks for reigniting my faith in myself lol
People tend to call it a wastegate, force of habit
Thank you for taking the time to show us how to clean this Turbo
Thank you very much for this video and commentary. It's exactly the problem I'm having at the moment. So thanks again 😉👍
Great video. Clear step by step. Increases my chances of doing the job from 0% to about 50%- we shall see.
Thanks Andrew 👌
Great video, my Audi A4 2.0tdi suffers form over boost and restricts to 3,000 rpm, so will definitely be giving this a go.
same with my ford focus :(, i will try tomorrow
@@danield3791 Hi Daniel, I haven’t cleared the fault but it’s so much better after changing out the fuel filter
Great video, tiny point on terms - this turbo has no wastegate, the item you are pointing at is the VNT vacuum actuator
thanks a lot dear..
Such a clear, enriching and helpful explanation
You answered some questions that were always on the agenda..
i have the same problem on my audi b7 tdi 16v 2008 uk model. thanks for sharing, this will help me save some money
Dziękuję za film , bardzo dobry materiał szkoleniowy.
Pozdrawiam z Polski.
Gold in the form of great content..great quality work and thank you!
Very informative thanks. I'm guessing the pressure that enters the wastegate and moves the diaphragm and rod, comes from the pressure in the inlet manifold?
Sir super video, very well explained,I have a 1.6 multijet car, there is a p0238 popping up,when I touch 100k 110 the check engine light pops with p0238 code and no power ,then morning it's back have checked the wires of maf sensor (cleaned it),still unable to find, will that be a problem like your,do I have to open up the turbo?
thanx man i just saved 150€ for used turbin and fixed mine passat 6
👌
An excellent video, well explained and logical. Thank you very much for taking all the trouble.
very good video on how to guide. not many of you chaps about anymore. big thumbs up for you sir
Thank you.
the best video that show one of overboost causes
thanks a lot
Great Vid got this exact problem. Got a good idea how all this works now.
Fabulous video, thanks for taking the time to do it. One question before I try doing it on a 06 1.9 TDi Passat, what torque figures did you use when reassembling rollers & vanes etc? Good & tight or is there spec to follow? Thanks again
oh Bugger... I need to do this on my Jeep Patriot. might get a quote from a Garage first to see if it's worth a weekend of my time or a professionals time.
Couple of questions for anyone here:
- has anyone used an electrolysis bath to clean parts like these? I’ve had great success using electrolysis with cast iron cookware and bike parts. Seems like it would be great for engine parts...?
- do you apply any kind of lubricant to the internal parts after cleaning and before reassembling?
Really fantastic video!
Do you mean 'Ultrasonic' bath?
No, you can't use lubricant as the temps would just burn it off!
Actually a light coat of dry fluffy carbon is a good lubricant.
I had the same fault on my 2009 Suzuki GV with limp mode, etc. After paying a garage to clean the turbo I now try to keep the variable vanes moving by using Millers Diesel additive, by occasionally pumping in oven cleaner and more especially have blocked the tube that brings the carbon back from the engine. Result ? Many years of trouble free turbo.
Also a damaged diaphragm on the actuator caused by negative pressure in the actuator perforating the diaphragm I know because it's happened to me and no mechanic could find the fault but I found it
Thanks to the gentleman ,same problem with my golf 5 TDI
Hi, thanks for the great video. How did you establish it was the turbo, not the pressure sensor or actuator?
I'm glad your willing to fix it for your customer rather than replacing it.
I always try my best for the customer
So basically if I’m understanding this the PO234 code is it’s lacking the functionality of being able to be moved so it needs a cleaning. Hey what kind of damage does this do driving around and not fixing it for a while
Search found 6 people asking already, so I'll jump on the pile. What torque when putting it back together please!
Awesome description in educating the issue. Well done. A+++
once you have that turbo side off, or even before you do that, spray plenty of Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner into the hot side of the turbo, helps remove plenty of the carbon!
I've got the exact same issue on my 10 yr old polo . The good vw dealership told me they can only replace the turbo with new one at almost 1/3rd the current valuation of my car and won't clean it. I wish I could find someone like you in India.😢
When you put the rollers back in did you lubricate the veins & parts before sealing it?
Excellent video, a good walk threw on how to do the job from start to finish, I've got a diesel meriva to do and this video has clarified a few things for me,I was going to go for the spray option but now I will just take it of and do it the proper way, then its done right first time, keep up the good work
Thanks Lawrence, good luck.
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage I took the turbo off and cracked it open, it was packed solid with carbon, and seized a little, got it all freed up and spotless, rebuilt it and gave it a run,its still loosing all boost after a couple of seconds, so the plan is to replace the actuator and vacuum selinoied, found two brand new ones for thirty pound,so it makes sense to do it while I've got all the bits off and good access, fourteen year old bits,so I will keep you posted and let you know if all is well next test drive lol
All the best.
Will the vehicle still run , after the turbocharger is messed up?
Very good. I learned a lot there. Thank you. I have a similar investigation with my Corsa 1.3 TDi
Hi! Thanks a lot for this. I just have one question and a moment of your time to check something. So, is this the same turbo as in VW Golf 5, 1.9tdi, year 2004?
Lastly, this is my fault code for my car. Can you tell me if my turbo has gone. Thank you!

Please tell when strip it back the same way need to calibration or something like that?
Hi. It's a great video, please can I know where your workshop is ,my Skoda Octavia with BKD engine has same issue, don't wanna risk spoiling it by inexperience. Regards
How do you know what torque settings you need when screwing the torque screws back on?
Very good job my friend and thanks for teaching me good
My golf has loss power overtaking and i turn of i return on It goes Nice but same after some time ??also does this in highway i go 100km and No acelerate more 😢
Is it out of a diesel or petrol ? Great vid
Do you need any special tool to remove the rollers inside the turbo?
Excellent detailed video and thorough explanation, top man Gerard!
Another common fault on these is failure of the internal rubber gasket in the actuator resulting in a huge vacuum loss and non operation of the actuator with associated boost/ limp mode issues . ( i know because it happened both on mine and my daughters VW ) ...One way to check if this is the case is by applying suction / vacuum to the pipe going to the actuator a vacuum tester is idea but if you dont have one ... you should be able to "Just" get it to move by sucking on the pipe and watching the actuator to see if it moves ... New gaskets can be bought on ebay pretty cheap but are a bugger to fit properly ... a replacement actuator would be a simpler fix if possible ...
Great input, thanks
Does the vacuum make the vanes open or does it make the vanes close?
Thanks a lot for the very detailed video !
Awesome vid , thanks for taking the time to make it
Excellent video
3:02 Overboost can also be caused by an incorrectly adjusted turbo actuator rod.... sometimes people mess around with them, trying to get more performance out of their car...
Would you hazard a guess as to why it coked up ? Driving habits , service interval, oil choice ?
I was wondering the same thing but no answer yet?
@@totompa81no nothing so far.
Probably faulty injectors emitting too much carbon in recirculation gases . I'm guessing 😅
Yep that's whats up with mine, major nightmare removing turbo though.
Certainly can be Dan. Good luck 🍀
Thanks for posting you were very thorough and in detail, very helpfull video this put light at heart of the matter..thank you once again...
How do you get the rollers out do they just pop off ?
Cool video. Im having some probs and suspect the turbo.
Im going to tackle this when the weather gets better. Cheers
Dougie McBride how did it go ?
Hi, can you let us know what was the issue with the air flow that you mention at the beginning related to bad idle?
Ger looking at purchasing a 08 vw jetta failed emissions twice last week losing power in 4th 5th when i test drove it a work colleague is selling it to me smoky at start up and starting like a tractor he said was going to bring it to you in ennis if you would look at it i fix old stuff here when bored classic bikes cars havnt clue about the newer cars turbo sensors egr etc painful are you based in ennis or north clare yourself that is, i am based near shannon thanks appreciate your help i am a welder i might come in handy to you haha eddie
Excellent guide👍👍. Thanks
I have loss of power on my Seat Ibiza tdi 2010, I had an error for MAF code put 3 different MAF I still have code for it. But now got Boost control sensor and MAF together. I took it to a mechanic he said I will need to replace the full turbo without diagnosing the cause in the turbo at all. Just on the OBD.... Can you give me some advice
What tools are needed to get the turbo out?? I have a vw t5 1.9 tdi brr. I replaced maf sensor , n75 sensor and map sensor in hope it was one of them.
Great video, thanks! At a garage, would this process be cheaper than a replacement turbo? I’ve been quoted £1000 for a new turbo fitted on my T5.
Hello. Just got my vnt cleaned on my b6 passat bkp engine with dsg because of overboosting as vnt was stuck. How can i prevent this from happening again ? I usually drive
around town. Do i need to redline it often to work the vnt vanes ? Or just regular driving is enough ?
Hi i have a ridex turbo on my passat 1.9 its just 5 mounts old and overboosting now the pressure house from turbo blows of when taking speed and letting the trottle off?what should i look for?i have checkt vacum hoses
I got a 2017 golf mk7,I added a plug and play racechip on my car that was for my car,it was new and unused, wen ever I drive my car with this plug and play chip,it over boost and goes in to limp mode, but wen the chip isn’t on my car it drives fine, you think it’s the chip it’s self
Thx very much Gerard. Please, the return line for Oil down the turbo needs any special glue when you reconnect it? Or you just reput it like that? Thx again for your answer.
Hello I have a 2.0 tdi aswell , I'm getting this overboost reading but I also have no power in each gear despite overboost is it still possible to be a turbo issue or could there be more to this?
how many miles did that turbo have on it. Mine is a 2016 hd3500 and its throwing a P0234 it has 32k on it do i need to clean it.
Hey mate could the map sensor cause this? I had mine retuned and they hadn't fixed the map sensor and I replaced the map sensor and it overboosted and spun the blades
Hi, i have audi a3 2005 same fault code and turbo overboost! How much will cost to repair it?
no turbo codes but same issue would this be my map sensor or actuator ? also have fuel temp sensor code
great presentation Gerard! God Bless !
Thanks very much Jimmy
Unreal video fair play pal!
Would poor maintenance cause carbon to build or its just how turbos are ? Would clean oil , pvc, egr , be good insurance to prevent this for happening ?
It definitely contributes to carbon buildup, anything affecting the air pathway will also add to the issue such as dirty valves and indeed the recirculated exhaust gases. Also take note that rust is also a major issue with older turbos, I have split ones which have a little carbon but are seized solid simply because the control ring was binding on rust so the vanes couldn't move. I find that the carbon buildup is mainly due to small journeys, poor servicing and this can lead to the turbo oil seals to weep leaking oil into the intake which then turns into a vicious cycle.
Thank you so much for this video well explained too . Car and money saver you definitely are. Massively appreciated 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Any link about removal of the turbo, please?
Thanks my issue started when i bought new turbo for cx7 mazda overboost error and the car knocked when i push gas too much. Any solution before losing motor? How to change or lowering the boost. Thanks
Could a P0234 code be caused by "vac pipes on the incorrect outlets of pressure sensors switchs? Vac/out.
Hey is it possible that actuator moves too much and causes overspin. Problem is on my nissan xtrail 2.2dci that i have no axial play on turbine, only little side to side play, and if i unplug vacum from actuator the turbine isnt making noise, bug if actuator is connected, ot sounds like its overspining, there is a really loud wuuuuuu noise just like some "emergency horn"
Great video & super helpful! I'm going attempt it but a bit worried about the torque required to put the T25s back in... can you advise at all???
Yes please me to
