Before my husband passed from cancer he tried to teach me everything about home improvement I might need so your words of wisdom today hit a chord with me. I remember the first project I did on my own was so frustrating and I sat down and cried many times. Silly I know but I persevered, got the job done. Years later I still tackle projects with a "I can do it" attitude.
What a special man he must have been! He wanted to make sure you’d be ok after he was gone. I have a feeling he’d be very proud of you now.
Wherever you have plugs down low, add a second set of plugs up high!
Also add power to all of the cabinets. You may never use it, but having the ability to charge things while they are put away is so important

@@DIYDanieyes! Outlets in closets. Also, consider cords on pulleys hanging from the ceiling. Super versatile. I've worked in kitchens with them and they are the best!
@@DIYDaniemake sure you have covers on all outlets that are outside of cabinets, my biggest issue was extra fine saw dust always found a way in and then plugging in tools would cause a spark flash because if this as well as some very sneaky flying bugs closing up said holes because it made for a great babies nest 😳😳😳the number of times I had to shut down the power clean them out drove me up the wall so I bought the child safety plug inserts and placed them into every out let in the workshop and house, them bugs are really really sneaky here in Australia 😹😹😹😹 but if I had the chance to do it all over again I would fork out the extra money and get the outlets that come with bright red internal covers that get pushed aside when any appliance is plugged in, it would have saved me heaps in not having to buy child safety covers as they also act as that, they won’t open if only one is pushed you must have a plug that is either 2 pronged or 3 for it to work. As I also have appliances from both the UK, EU as well as the US (that is marked US use only because of the low power usage) I have a all brand socket which came with said bright red safety covers already built in best power board I have ever bought. I have no idea where I picked it up from, I know it was online.😹😹😹I do struggle with pushing in the plug but that’s because I’m 60 and have arthritis in both hands and wrists 😼😼but that’s okay as I don’t plan on moving the plugs around now that they are in😹😹😹
For a very clean look, you could have a floor to ceiling in-built cupboard all along the back wall, with sliding doors. It'll look like a wall, but behind it is a world of storage. Some of the sliding doors/panels can be white boards, cork boards, & whatever other boards you need!

I was thinking this, too. No matter how much storage you have, you will 100% fill it and need more almost immediately!😄 While the idea of bare walls might seem appealing aesthetically, you'll soon be eyeing them as wasted storage potential. Might as well embrace that reality now!
I think a pegboard for the items you use regularly would be helpful.

I had a similar idea, just not as elaborate 😅 I think it’s a great idea to have black/white and cork boards attached to the doors. This way you maximize the space and make it look cleaner and more airy

Take your dust/exhaust system placement into consideration when deciding where to put your sanding station. It was a lesson learned/hindsight for me. Im so excited to see the end result. Youre a lucky girl!
I would install more drawers than cabinets. Drawers are so practical and It’s easier to see what you have than in a cabinet under a counter.
Here are my two cents. I think white/neutral walls will allow what you're working on to be the focus. Of course you need things that inspire you in the space but I think that subconsciously your mind will feel cluttered when you have a ton going on. White, raw materials (wood). And I wanted to say your attitude towards projects and growing is so mature and grounding. It allows you to make mistakes and not get completely frustrated and enjoy the learning and then end up creating such great things. Thanks for brightening Saturday mornings.

Murphy day bed; Hot/Cold drink station with ice maker; Kenobi station (toys, food, bed); water closet with composting toilet; central vacuum with outlets everywhere. Love the welded stair rail plan. Storage for safety gear, overalls, etc. Spray shack for painting.
The wineglass holder idea for the stools is genius!
We use the smallest section under our stairs as a watering nook, it keeps the pupper slobber contained. You could also make a space for Kenobi with a dog bed for him to lay down in.
1000% second a Kenobi (and future friends?) station under the stairs!
Since you’re planning on making a lot of rolling work surfaces, just a tip to use workbench casters! They are made to lift up completely when you lock them so the table legs sit directly on the ground instead of the whole weight being on the casters.
Also, in one of the pins you shared looked like the chalkboard was actually a cabinet door, so could he another idea for your storage solutions!
The wall shelving (24:15) on the first floor looks pretty high up, what about a library-style sliding ladder for easy and safe access that you could tuck away when not in use? Some great ideas in this video, can't wait to see it!
My dream need is lots of power outlets and some hanging from ceiling especially over the table so you aren't tripping over cords.

Some thoughts I had was that the space under your stairs would be a great space for your wood & materials storage. Also, use the tall cabinet doors as your blackboard & corkboard areas to keep your walls clear & clean?
I was thinking large cabinet doors would be great options for mini murals, if she wants to change up the space but not do a full garage-sized wall mural, but actually, painting them with chalkboard paint would be a FANTASTIC idea! Could do chalk art on the ones you're not currently using for notes, or keep them sleek and clean except when in use. It would fit pretty nicely into the industrial vibes she's thinking about. I wouldn't do every single cabinet like that though, else it might feel a bit too dark and overbearing.
The most important thing was that aesthetics was last on your list.
So many other DIYers put that first and functionality slips through the cracks little by little the more “the look” takes precedent. You need things to function based on your work flow so you can get projects done without frustration. The design and look will fall in line afterwards because everything you design is amazing!
Under cabinet lighting would be very helpful too!!
I love the design style you're going for, I think it matches the exterior of the garage too, very cohesive.
Don’t forget to have a spot to hang all your clamps from. You can never have enough clamps and you’ll continue to add to your collection so plan for more than you have now.
I think your style is very "dopamine decor". I love the idea of blending a bunch of styles of different things that just make you happy. I love industrial, MCM, with touches of cottage and vintage. So its very inspirational to see other people who mix it up like you do.
COLOR, COLOR, COLOR, did I mention color. I think it would brighten up the space, especially on gray days!!!! Love the videos & props to you for all of mind numbimg tasks you take on! You the best!!! I love the way you think outside of the box, great minds think alike. I always try to think outside of the box. Girl your style is hodge podge, which is GRRRRReat!!
I love your ideas and the way you were able to imagine the space functioning. For me, blank space is just...blank space! A couple of practical notes (because I love clean spaces) Anything dark will show every speck of dust. So maybe paint the vertical parts of the stairs black, but leave the treads natural wood or a medium color. And, while I like the idea of floating cabinets, I can see the space underneath becoming a collection spot for all the stuff you don't have a specific place for.
I also like a lot of the ideas in the comments. This IS a creative group!

Having worked in multiple studios, I have to say that the more you can put on wheels (even cabinets) the more flexible your space can be. This series is helping me with planning the huge art studio I want to build in my backyard. Thank you Danie!!!
Great minds think alike.... Another idea, check out tiny house aka multifunctional furniture. Chairs storage built into the table somehow, fold down work surfaces for extra work surfaces. Maybe your saw stations could lock together with wheels that can unlock and move around as needed. Hidden storage that blends into the wall. A chalkboard/whiteboard or art that folds down as a table as well... Imagination and the world is your oyster!!!!
This is such a fun undertaking! You may want to consider a soundproofed closet to put a large air compressor, central dust collection, or other noisy background systems. Under the stairs may be a good choice for that. Also, if you do wind up expanding the apothecary style box/shelf setup, consider doing a library-style rolling ladder for access all the way to the ceiling.
Love the ideas of big tables that have wheels/locked to move when necessary. Where is your vac system going to live?? Corner under the stairs?? Are there parking places for vehicles?? I think having small items/tools live in cabinets that close makes the place feel cleaner and neater, probably more modern. If you were hooking seating under the tables, maybe swing them on the base of the seat instead of the top of the seat. Think swing arm with seat positioned on top (weld it yourself). Yes on the wood storage that moves so it can live where you need it.
I think the raw wood color will be a great backdrop for all of your DIYs. And then splashes of color maybe on your different stations? Outlets all over the place.
I was going to suggest exactly the same thing, make the stations and storage the pops of colour 🌈

Hi Danie. GREAT plans. I’m going to suggest not so much hidden storage. It will cost a lot more to close off everything. I thought that large rolling island with grey bins was very practical. All your most used small tools and supplies could be stored at your main work location. Might I suggest a metal top on that to prevent cuts and make it super easy to clean. And keep one side open to accommodate a couple hanging stools. Then, for each of your power table saws, etc make them the same height as that island so if you have long wood, etc, the island can support them. You could lock them to each other when using. I’d put the welding stuff closest to the large doors to help with any fire hazard and extra light. The rolling wood thing is cool but why not come up with a more vertical system to use up some of that height. I have tons of ideas. My number one question is…are you going to house your cars inside during snowy season? Love ya, Maureen
Retractable extension cords from the ceiling. They are the best workshop item ever!! I promise you they are so worth every penny.

I think having the clean black white and wood for the workshop is a good idea and then have a colour explosion upstairs in the studio, best of both worlds! Xx
I stopped the video not even 10 mins in to say THANK YOU for the little pep talk about a DIY not going as planned and pushing through it anyways! I'm dealing with a totally unrelated task that got me angry at myself earlier today and I stepped away from it frustrated. But after listening to you, I'm more determined now to find a solution instead of giving up. I am a DIYer of ALL things and its very unforgiving of me to not give myself grace when doing something I've never done before because its not going smoothly. GEESH! the WHOLE point of being a DIY'er is trying & learning new things. I will be kinder to myself. Little Life Lesson Learned! 😊
If you would like to have more than one table at times, your 360 table could be 2 separate tables that lock together, back to back. Both on locking wheels, of course!

The workshop is going to be AMAZING! I love the idea of the drill press being attached to a rolling cabinet that will fit right in to the bank of cabinets. Brilliant ideas, Danie! Clean storage is the way to go…a place for everything and everything in its place.
Okay, regarding your pinterest board. I love the idea of adding color by striping the edges. Think how cute that would look with your apothecary drawers. The wood storage they showed is perfect, you just need to make yours bigger. Dedicated spaces for the different tools that don't move would be perfect. I like the darker drawers and cabinet doors, keeping in mind the colored edges. If you do any pegboard storage, the way they did it with every tool in graduated size and outlines drawn on the board looks so neat and tidy, and you could still contain that within your closed cabinets. Did you notice on one of the pix the lady had stripes near the bottom of the door to break up the darkness? Oh, and those black industrial lights looked great. I think I see a plan emerging! And I just noticed I said perfect about 200 times in this comment LOLOL.
I think you need a chill spot....you know... for the coffee break, for the almost giving-up moments, for the looking-for-inspo moment, or the it's -too-cold- to- work moment. a cozy nook, with a cute rug, comfy couch and a coffe table.
Just a tip from a photographer about the backdrop - this will work much better against a wall. A cloth or paper backdrop is more likely to be wonky, not hang straight, get torn or damaged if it's freehanging, especially from that height. Since you won't be using it all the time, I would leave a space against that back wall where you can install a wall mount system. Then you can pull it down and when it's not in use you can have a moveable table in front of it or something.

I think going off the vibes of the apothecary cabinet would be beautiful, with the dark wood tones mixed with black then throw in the industrial and farmhouse touches….chefs kiss. Also I love the idea sketches you showed, it all looks awesome.
Idea for storage - do a pegboard / cleat wall inside of a cupboard, where the doors open up and slide into the sides. All the advantages of open and closed storage! Also re: extra tables, I keep a bunch of metal trestles in my workshop so if I need extra surface spaces for e.g. painting I can put any piece of wood on them and tada!
Pocket doors
I've been reminded that chalkboard paint exists, and that literally any surface can become a chalkboard because of it. You could have a LOT of fun with that, especially if you were thinking of having some of your cabinets being black anyway... 👀I'm thinking about some taller cabinets near the apothecary, specifically, but there are so many options.
The vac system is a HUGE big brain move, just make sure it has enough reach/branches to be usable at every station you may need it at, or think about those stations (sanding, cutting) in relation to the system. Like others have said on outlets, definitely have more than you think you'll need, at multiple heights, including from the ceiling above your mobile central stations and inside of cabinets, you never know when they'll come in handy, and adding in more now will allow you more flexibility to reorganize in the future once you've actually "lived" in the finished space. You'll never think "Wow, I wish I had less options for locations to plug in my equipment!" On a related note, if you have multiple breakers, take careful note which things go to which breaker- install is the best time to do so. Especially take note which ones "floating" outlets in the ceiling or floor belong to. Use descriptors that won't change if you redesign the space, ie "North wall, low/high/counter-height, ground/upper floor" before adding on what happens to be there at the moment, so you don't have to relabel everything each time you move things around.

I think focusing on how the space works is the most important thing right now. Starting with your light wood/ dark cabinets/metal industrial stairs /and figuring out your lighting . You can always add color later. In fact you can change what the space looks like 800 times over the next 10 years and probably will! LOL. It's nice to see you so excited about this. 🙂
All of your ideas are great ! You said that you would like to be able to have closed storage for a clean look. I think using the cabinet door fronts as black board, white board and cork boards would be awesome. Always with your love of color just paint the edges of the storage cabinets. Either way you go it's going to be awesome! Cannot wait to see what you decide.
I like the black metal stairs with wood cabinets. I think you need one area with an inspirational
Mural or some colorful art on it , that you could change whenever you want. Whatever you do will be great !

Ideas for the new She Shack that you may not have mentioned:n1) Two comfy chairs and a coffee or side table by one of the windows for working on a laptop, relaxing and reflecting or for brainstorming with a friend. 2) Make shelving in the closed storage that is on drawer sliders to more easily take out and put away tools. 3) Include electrical and phone charging within the storage so that the batteries, etc., can charge while stored. This might also allow some of the enclosed shelves to be used for smaller work requiring smaller electrical tools. 4) Electrical and charging station in any islands or in the floor under movable 360 worktables. 5) Library ladder for high shelves in the upstairs room?
I really like the design that you walked through with sketches in the garage. The "wine" rack for stools is genius. the blackboard and corkboard would be on a track /barn door track so they slide and cover storage.
Finally, my poor attempt at a poem (copywritten in creative commons) inspired by your day of applying cement board to the foundation:

I think you Nailed the layout plan at the end!! Warm white walls, dark walnut doors/tops on that earthy green cabinets with pops of the black industrial here and there would be Absolutely Fantastic!! And you should ABSOLUTELY weld your own stair railing!! I can't wait to see the finished garage!!
For the photography backdrop, you could put the pull down in front of the garage door. On good days, you could pop open the garage door, use the back side and natural lighting. On not so good days, you could use lighting and the other inside side.
With so many projects on the go, perhaps textured whites? Shiplap, stained wood, textured cement offset with plywood tones of light brown
I’ve been going back and watching your old videos (because all of your content is so awesome and inspiring) and the big take-aways I’ve had are you have such a clean, organic style. Even with your nerdy passion projects, they still have the overall general tone of the danie story. (Which to me sounds like an artificer decided to be a druid or vice versa 🤷🏻♀️, that’s how I see you, lol. Just big nature-inspired and problem-solving magic. Like sawdust and sprockets.) And as for the colour design, when you made over your art room in your old house you said something that really stuck with me. You said you really liked clean, minimal design for your creative spaces so that your projects rather than the room/space consume your creativity. Like having a clean, white gesso treated canvas before you start painting.
Maybe look in to collapsible/fold in cabinet doors so you can have your tools more accessible during a diy and then closed off when you're done. Really excited to see the progress of this!

Closed shelving built-in like you did for the master bedroom. Don't forget a wood storage area. Add in extension cord connection in the ceiling so you aren't tripping over cords. Don't forget usb plugs b/c who has time to find a cord to recharge stuff in the middle of a DIY jam session. I love the coffee cup merch!
Rolling tables with utilities in the ceiling on tracks means we can plug anything in anywhere in the space. Really a game changer for our workshop.

LOTS of work lights for the cold winter days when the doors are closed. Heated mats to stand on, and for Kenobi. Ventilation. Trash, recycle, scrap storage. Colour, but clean and not too busy or dark. Black stairs.
I wouldn't put a fixed workstation under the stairs and give yourself a cramped dingy spot to work. Hang a chair there instead?
Do you have an inventory of everything that needs a place, including purchases yet to be made? As well as all the types of project tasks? That will help inform the design.
Speakers for your music! A screen for movie nights - ha!
Orthotics for your back?
The nitty-gritty moments of DIY are not the sexy-beautiful reveal ones, but you have mastered both.
Under the stairs would make a great little desk area! Keep laptop/tablet while working, maybe tuck a small tv on a wall mount that could pivot in and out, be able to stash a stool underneath.
Such good ideas! Think about the electrical needs for your shop. Maybe some drop-down outlets would be helpful for your tools.
Think about electrical outlet placement; up down, ceiling, floor etc. Also I love April Wilkinson's channel. Perhaps some of her content can help. I think you guys have done a great job so far.❤
The chair hanging under the table is pretty standard in Danish schools. It's such a good solution and easy to clean, even for the children.
Don't forget the "housekeeping" things: a broom closet, a place to store garbage bags, etc!
I always like my work space or art studio to be a clean true white. I find with a white studio/work space any color I use on a project is clean and true looking. Sometimes when there is too much color used in a work are it can compete or "muddle" the look of project colors.

Love all of your thoughts and love the idea of the stools floating under workstation and the pull down backdrop for your photos! Those are the little details that’ll make the whole space feel so much more intentional and thought out.. Can’t wait to see this space come together!
I have always found that i work best when my organization moves. Designated carts for each category. (Duplicate tools for each to keep organised) in each shelf or drawer, trays to lift out everything i need and move it to where i am working. The open organized wall can work for you with doors in front that open and flip down to be a table. My long held dream is to use a dresser. Put it on wheels and turn the drawers into shelves. Replace top with a much larger one with legs for overhang in the back!!! Use tall stools with it
I love that you already have your DIY apothecary shelf unit in the garage🙌🙌 Maybe a cabinet that has a tool peg board behind the cabinet doors if you don't want the tools to be displayed...All of your ideas are so great!!❤
In Australia we have a product called Formply. It’s basically plywood with a black veneer. I used it for all my benches. I made benches for all my tools and put them on wheels. I made them all the same height so I could push them together and have an extra large table.
I love it but the only down side is the black shows every spec of sawdust.

Danie, I'm loving this series! So many possibilities! Something struck me as I was listening to you talk about the 360 access table, then the Pinterest pic of multiple tables.........maybe I'm nuts, but could you make multiple tables that join together into one big gigantor table when you need it and then if you need a smaller table you can detach a piece and roll it away? Obviously one of the tables would have the chop saw, and each table would have cubbies that are accessible whether or not the tables are apart or joined together. OK maybe I am crazy. But it would be cool to have different "mobile stations" that come together to make a giant table. It would be like a Transformer. 😂 (BTW, my best friend's uncle is the creator of the Transformers...many of my analogies and DIYs come from ideas sparked by robots, lol). I am not a builder...but I hope this idea could help you. ❤
Brad from Fix This Build That and Bob from I Like to Make Stuff have both made mobile wood storage carts on their channels that I think would work well for your space. Excited to see how it comes together.
Exciting times! Love the idea of floating cabinets, or another weld project by creating a base if you want some extra security. But if you're having high level storage, we must have a DIY Rolling Library Ladder!!!!
You could also have a movie party in the garage on the pull down back drop in the garage

I totally feel you on the "some days DIY is just so hard and not fun". I had a couple of those recently with our addition build and I needed that little "peptalk" about mistakes and there always being a solution.

In my grandfathers woodshop he has a bunch of storage using old kitchen cabinets which created a cool collected vibe. Task lighting is a must have. A peg board with all of the chisels works wonders. And a magnetic board for drill bits is great too! Central vac is a must have! And def need a bandsaw you would be amazed at how much you will use it when you have it. Many many outlets are great especially at counter height for many tools. He also has a run of cabinets with most saws on it (his bandsaw is a freestander) also round tables work incredible he built his around the support columns and are incredibly helpful. I've used his shop since I was a baby we were taught that once you know something you never forget it! It's especially awesome your building it with friends and family as that's what my family has done for all our homes it creates lasting memories (good and bad!)
While you are considering outlets; include 1 or more in the middle of the floor upstairs so you won't have extension cords running across the floor creating trip hazards. Someone else mentioned adding outlets in the cabinets where you store your chargers. Great idea. Also, include USB ports if possible. Last idea; have one or more countertops and or tabletops that are stainless steel. They are durable, clean easily and lend itself to the industrial vibe if you go that route. Everything is looking so good; congratulations on the hard work you have done so far!!
As I always love your bold wallpaper choice, I hope you incorporate it into office space, even if you keep clean look in the workshop!
This will be spectacular! I love the very tall cabinet (the one the lady is putting up her drill), with the 2-toned look; wood toned with the splash of black. Waaay cool! And looks chic!!
Weld your own staircase? Why! Absolutely! The only way to go!! Maybe add some interest with curly cues or wavy railing.
Also, you seem to doubt yourself when starting a new project and then you nail it! (no pun intended!!). You always outdo yourself; you are more a professional than you think. A fun, outgoing, smart, quirky, beautiful woman, who thousands enjoy and tune in every Saturday! I just wish I had your stamina and tirelessness! Think about loading stuff into and out of the shop. You may want to have your Wood storage near the door, to make it easier (less distance!) to get it in and out. Same for your dust collector … you might like having that near an entrance so you can get the dust-filled bag out quickly when you empty it.
Am jealous off those high ceilings. Too late to build an elevator to hoist things into and out of the loft? 😁

Ooooo, what about a mini sliding farmhouse barn door that could be made out of acrylic so you could see the tools, but would keep the dust out? I mean to close off the tools if you decide to do the tool storage directly under the work bench? Idk if I’m explaining the vision right but I love that your visions are giving me visions! ❤

Some supports can be included if you want to lift some "heavy" elements from the ceiling.
About big tables, sometimes it is a good idea to have several smaller tables that can be joined together. So you can have a square or a big rectangle.
Remember for tool placement, to allow for a full 8' piece of lumber to go on each side of the saw because sometimes you are only cutting off a small piece.
I think maybe you could bring colour in by painting your light fixtures fun colours or thrifting some colourful pieces.
Also put in sooooooo many outlets. Like double the amount you think you need. Don't forget hanging extension chords from the ceiling for all your moveable tables. Make sure you've got a bunch of extra empty spots on your electrical panel for additional breakers.
Add floor vents for your extraction fans so you can sweep right into it for east cleanup. And I know you'd like a sign above the chop saw but if also suggest an extraction fan pipe directly behind the saw and any other stationery cutting tools.
Also you should add a swing. Why? Because those high ceilings say you must. Besides it's a great way to brainstorm.
Make a space for a mini-fridge and coffee pot.
Don't forget a soundsystem. Even if it's just a bunch of google minis everywhere.
Since you film in that space maybe think about some permanent rigging for filming gear like lights, and camera mounts. And then add more outlets.
A TV mount somewhere would be a good shout. You can chromecast your plans, cut lists, and sketches from your laptop to a big screen.
And Kenobi needs a space for his bed and a water bowl.

The 2 main colors - black & wood. Maybe have your wood stored under the stairs if there is room enough. A white board would be cleaner than a chalk board. Don't forget a charging station. A cork board would be useful to hang up instructions. What ever you choose I'm sure it will be fabulous. Danie just go for it & have fun.
Since you have such a tall area under your stairs you could build a pull-out spray booth. You could youse the underside of the stairs as a way to hang things like cabinet doors.
I have a small one car garage/workshop. When I renovated it, I put up ceiling mounted curtain tracts that I added white tarps to in the areas I didn’t want to see things (like lumber storage) and in other areas I put up clear shower curtains. Keeps dust off things, and my white tarps ended up deliberately getting splatter with a bunch of different colours of paint like Splatoon!! And it makes me so happy to be out there. Hehe. Oh. And I added an old computer monitor my parents had with a Fire TV stick so I can stream music and movies and such while I work. Love it.

Functionality and organization are great and essential, but, don't forget a little whimsy. Also, consider a section of floor on a hydraulic lift for moving large items up to the workshop and back down.
So this garage is going to house everything except cars 😆. So far the brainstorming sounds amazing!
Some big industrial fans either hard wired or plugged in up high on the wall. And get ones that are very adjustable to direct the flow where you want it or away from where you don’t want it. Loved the dark industrial look WITH THE BEAMS!! I love the idea of you welding the stairs. You could make them open for a cool look but use acrylic sheets to close them up for Kenobi’s safety.

For an industrial look, you could cover all the walls in cabinets. Your bandsaw/sander/drill press could be in a designated cabinet. To open up the space you could have accent negative space where there aren't cabinets. This could also make the stairs an accent. For brainstorming, I always like to work in a corner to have two walls "surrounding" me (maybe one cork and one blackboard. I also like having a table dedicated for build plans/sketchbooks in the brainstorming area. Your brainstorming area could be under your stairs to make use of that strange space.
I've seen a really cool DIY sanding table. It looks like a regular table but you can lift off the top and underneath is a peg board with a hook-up for your shop vac. So you sand on it and dust gets sucked down into the table
