    If a blouse or shirt has sleeves, and the sleeves are too long, which is the best way to shorten the sleeves? Would it be better to: (1) remove the stitching around the armhole, remove the sleeve and shorten it at the top, and then sew it back into the armhole? or (2) remove the stitching where the sleeve meets the cuff, then shorten the sleeve at the bottom and sew the cuff back on? If you have time, I would love to see a video on shortening sleeves. All of my blouses have too long sleeves! Thank you very much for your valuable instructions!

    • @Sewingeducationcenter
      @Sewingeducationcenter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Laura, great question. It depends on construction, how many inches short. If you want to keep original cuff construction then remove shoulder stitch, shorten sleeve at the top but keep to the curvature, that is the tricky part. Or you can do a minor (1 inch) shorten in cuff area - too much off cuff and you lose the vent. I may do this for future video, thank you for suggestion!

    love watching and learning all different and new techniques. I do have a question related to the oversized arm hole. Why would you not takeup excess at the top of the shoulder seam bringing the drooping neckline up a tad and making the arm hole smaller as opposed to making thr side seam narrower just under the arm hole? Thanks! Keep the videos coming! Very informative

    • @Sewingeducationcenter
      @Sewingeducationcenter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Geraldine and good question. It really depends on the neckline of the shirt. If you have a large deep neckline opening in the center front and back, you can pull up the shoulder. But if the neckline is higher and rounder and not as deep then it's harder to do it that way. Hope this helps.

    Great video - it makes me want to learn how to sew. I do have a question. When you are finished sewing, you don't cut out the extra fabric? You are my new favorite channel.

    • @Sewingeducationcenter
      @Sewingeducationcenter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! Very good question. It depends on the fabric. If it's thin fabric it's ok to leave as is. If thick, then you can trim and overlock. Hope this helps!

    • @angelaa968
      @angelaa968 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wow... you replied to me! Thank you and thank you for the information. If I was thinking of purchasing a sewing machine for myself do you have any suggestions for a good machine? Or are there certain things I should look for in a machine? Such as the ability to "overlock". Thanks again!!

    • @Sewingeducationcenter
      @Sewingeducationcenter  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello again! Yes, I try to reply to as many comments as I can though sometimes it takes me a little while. I would say it depends on what kind of alteration you're planning to do. For simple alterations on light fabrics an inexpensive machine is fine. For something like jeans, a heavier machine that can handle thicker fabrics. It all depends. Overlock is great if you plan to do more sophisticated techniques.

    • @Sewingeducationcenter
      @Sewingeducationcenter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question. The best thing to do is to mark off where you plan to trim on one side w/ pins or chalk and repeat on the other. If you have a manquin or hanger, hang the shirt and then mark where you plan to dart and trim. This will make it easier.

      Hello, great question. Similar answer to question below on how to sew without wrinkles. Use the curvature of the armhole as your guide; sew very slowly so you don't stretch the fabric and hold tight, following the natural armhole curve. You want the fabric to guide so don't force it.

    Sorry...not the technic I would choose...the finishing hems should have been undone, then take in the excess on the sides, cut out the excess, overlock the sides, fold over the hems and sew them back in place. In the way it was done in the video, the tank top is left with lots of unsightly bulky areas! If it was meant to be look like that it would have been made like that by the manufactures, no?! I would be furious (and most certainly would not pay for it) if I sent my garment to a taylor for adjustments and it came out like that! Would it be so hard to make it the proper way?
    GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME!!!

      Yes, I said dart but my son who edited the video misunderstood what I said due to my accent. We put a TH-cam annotation card with the correction but it looks like they aren't supported anymore.

      +Geri O'Donnell Correct! The editor misunderstood. The video now has an annotation w/ correction.

    Hello, I'm new to dressmaking. May I know why do we need to sew the seam centre line? Thank you!

      Good question! Because that is the holding position to provide stability, otherwise the garment may twist when you fold it. Let me know if that makes sense and if you have other questions, thank you!
