This boss fight is a tragedy, pure and simple. The sealed vessel instinctively fighting to defend itself, while wanting you to give it the mercy of death and in a brief moment of clarity in the second half of the fight, begins stabbing itself, wanting to be free of its prison.
he doesnt stab theirself willing to be free of their prision, they stab theirself to help you to defeat theirself
it’s a tragedy because it’s fighting against the infection but cant help it so tries to inflict it’s own wounds in between attacks coming from the infection itself

The vessel isnt the one trying to defend itself, that would be the infection in control, while the vessel tries to help you kill it by stabbing itself.
This after loads of lore of a great kingdom fall to destruction and a respectable knight whose sole creation was to be a perfect vessel to fix everything, only to end being imperfect.
Hollow Knight is an artistic masterpiece from every single angle.
This song really fits what you see at the screen when it plays
I also recommend "Pure Vessel."
It's like a prologue, or perhaps epilogue, to Sealed Vessel.
It's more "what should have been" for Sealed Vessel. Just as Sisters of Battle, a more complete version of the Mantis Lords - sisters united, a throne unbroken and bond retained.
A child with a father, going on to become a noble knight for the kingdom, rather than a life born only to be sacrificed.
Sealed Vessel is basically Soul of Cinder, Hollow Knight version:
1) bombastic first phase and a sorrowful 2nd one
2) the 2nd phase of both tracks starts at 2:14

@@N_Tertainment7 *plin plin plon* is a different feel altogether, but yes, I agree that the 2nd part of *Sealed Vessel* is kind of similar to Gwyn's theme.
I'm late by a lot, but it's important to note: at the end of this song, when we here the redux of the main theme, this is the first time it gets a resolution. This moment, melodically emphasizes the finality of the moment in-game.
When I beat this boss first time I wasn't planning on playing HK for a while, but when I heard you could enter his dreams and cut the infection by its source I knew I had to give it a shot, and boy that was rewarding.
Loud, emotional, almost chaotic, all of which are the marks of the Hollow Knight's impurity. A being that was meant to have no mind to think, no will to break and no voice to cry suffering, yet the song showed all 3 of those traits, reflecting the state of the Hollow Knight, the broken last hope of an eternal Hallownest.
Usually I get annoyed at thumbnails like these, but Sealed Vessel deserves nothing less. Pog

Sealed Vessel just hits hard and doesn't let up. If it's not the intensity of the first section it's the tragedy of the second one.
If you can, check anything at all from Chicory A colorful tale. I can guarantee that it's amazing no matter what you choose.

5:40 sounds a lot like Händel suite 4 in d-minor. Maybe Christopher Larkin took inspiration from this German Baroque composer when creating the games soundtrack...🤔

Should react to main theme ('hollow knight') and opening ('enter hallownest') as well, should find a lot of interesting components :) Also, 'Mantis Lords' is one of the best tracks on the OST, that's certainly worth a listen.

Okay, SPOILERS for the final fight, but context makes this song more tragic:
The final boss is a container. A version of you, the player, used to contain a great plague. You arrive just as the vessel is breaking, weakening, and you aim to take the vessel's place.
The fight is two-fold versions of sadness, and determination. Sadness in that, the vessel is literally a living creature suffering from containing the -entire- plague that destroyed Hallownest. It WANTS to be free of it's agony, of it's struggle... And yet, Determination is it's goal. It cannot give up it's fight, because if you take it's place, and you fail, he will be at fault for causing the plague to release once more. He -must- defeat you, because he cannot allow the plague to spread.
As added context, during the fight, it's clear the plague itself begins fighting back. He begins stabbing himself, and spraying plague-fluid at you in attempts to fight you. He wants to be free. He is breaking. And yet, he fights on, determined to fulfill his duty to his very end. It is a tragic, depressing, and sorrowful boss, and that makes the entire fight so... beautiful and cathartic when you find the -true- ending.
no it's definitely just trying to die and being directly physically manipulated by the Radiance. one of the attacks later on has it straight up dragged around by the midsection like a ragdoll and slammed at you repeatedly
That's an interpretation but there's nothing in the game that suggest it's true.
