  • New tool! With the new Bosch 1617EVSPK in the shop, a router table was a must have to increase the versatility of the router. I purchased this table at the same time as the router with the plan to install the fixed base into the router table.
    Setting up the table was easy and the Bosch instruction were very clear all the way through the process. In general, the process is as follows:
    1. Mount the table top to the sides
    2. Mount the front panel with the power switch
    3. Install and level the router mounting plate
    4. Assemble the fence
    5. **Install router the router mounting plate (If you have a router)
    6. Secure the router mounting plate to the table top
    7. Install the fence
    8. Enjoy!
    I’ve already been using the heck out of this router table and the Bosch quality was impeccable! Easy to set up, easy to use, very sturdy and rigid for being plastic aside from the fence and table top. I’m impressed.
    If you have any questions about the setup, feel free to leave them in the comments section down below.
    Thanks as always and be safe,
    Josh

    I have one of these tables and my top was warped, as someone else has mentioned in the comments. I contacted Bosch and they sent out a new top, so kudos to them for the customer service. Unfortunately, it was also warped. I took a couple hours and was able to flatten it a bit by knocking down the high spots (with elbow grease and some sand paper on a slab of flat granite). It helped a considerably, but there are still low points and the top still isn't flat enough to support workpieces for something like nicely fitting rails and stiles. I've continued to use it for less precise work, but plan on getting a new table top, plate and fence when I finally tackle the upcoming kitchen project.

      Interesting! I’m sorry to hear about your experience with the table tops. It’s possible I’m just not nearly as attuned to minor differences that some of the users (yourself included) are seeing. Glad Bosch at least tried to remedy the situation. Thanks for the comment!

    You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

    Just got my 1181 from Amazon and assembled tonight, can’t wait to use it! I also ordered the dust collection adapter for the 1617 router that you demo’d from Etsy. That looks like it will prevent any dust from getting out, though I do think it will be a bit of a hassle to change bits. It would be worth it to keep the dust to a minimum.

      Awesome! 😄 I’m excited for you to get to use it! I was thinking the same thing about the bits but another viewer commented about Bosch’s “Offset Wrenches” and sure enough, they have some. They allow you to change the bit from above the table much more easily. Here’s a link! I’ll probably be getting a pair myself.

      @NorthwestCraftsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I appreciate the compliment and am glad you found it useful. Sounds like a fun project! I think the table and router can definitely handle this. What I would be careful of is your speeds, feeds, and bit sharpness. Heat is your enemy and the faster and more aggressively you cut, the more your bit will dull which only makes it worse. I recommend you get a nice freud tongue and groove bit set and evaluate sharpening it throughout the project (usually have to send carbide out).

    What’s the clearance below it . And can you use a larger router.. I.E porter cable 3.1/4 plunge and is the table set up for micro adjustment with a plunge . Thx any info will save me time much appreciated.

      - Clearance is about 9” from bench top to the top of that window underneath.
      - Not sure about the size of router, really depends on how big it is. I would imagine if Bosch has the router plate pattern for your router, it’ll work. No guarantees though.
      - It is set up for micro adjustments from the table top and honestly that is one of my favorite features.

    Some questions regarding the height adjustment feature of the fixed base when mounted to the router table:
    1- Is it a good replacement of a router lift?

  • @troutguyCO
    @troutguyCO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice. Thanks for help with assembly. The confusing part is all the screws. All these terms: truss head, pan head, #10 by xxx. Why didn't they just color code the 400 screws that are included? Then they would say, put the phillips head (ORANGE) screws (4) into points, etc.
    Part of your video that really helped was when putting on router plate (aluminum) at point 4:29. One doesn't actually put the 8 screws THROUGH the holes but only uses them for leveling. I know that was said in the instructions but because I didn't have 8 screws anymore (2 were put in wrong location on dust port) it was very confusing. Your video is very helpful, though so I took out the 2 from dust port and now had 8 for top plate.
    What about that round, clear plastic piece - is that supposed to attach to prevent chips from flying up? No mention in manual or in your video? It's about 3 inches in diameter and has a place for a screw at one end.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment! I agree color coding would be a good idea on their part.
      In the screw bag is a small post like screw with a flat head top. Put that inside the post of that clear piece and screw it into the router plate at about the 2o’clock position. It’s intended as a shield for routing without the fence.

    Would love to get one but down under we use 240 volts and I can't see any that can run on that voltage. Strangely Bosch only seem to have made this for the USA market. Can't use a step down transformer either as the vac system and router are all 240 volts. Was the tabletop dead flat?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shoot! I hadn’t even thought about that but think you’re right because most of Europe is at the same voltage as you. If you find a solution, comment back because I bet you’re not the only one.
      And dead flat is a little of a trick question. I believe I remember measuring it to within 1/64” or 1/128” of “flatness” by my 36” level and any gap present. But at that point I start to question my level as I haven’t had it checked or certified, just assumed. For me, there wasn’t any obvious twisting, bowing, or cupping of the table which is flat enough for my work. If you need a truly, sub thou flatness, I’d recommend making one with melamine or the like because you can get some wicked flat and slick surfaces that way.

      What would be different with our table is the 1/16" shims would go on the trailing side of the fence and set equal with the apex of the bit. This leaves the leading edge slightly offset, like in the video. I'll see if I can put together a video on using this specific table and shims as a jointer. Stay tuned!

    I owned this Bosch table. I have one minor complaint and two major complaints about it. The minor complaint is that the cast and machined table surface isn't flat. It was warped, not severely but enough to be very annoying to me.
    The first major complaint is that the insert is a non-standard size, so you can't use another vendor's router lift.
    The second major complaint is with mounting a Bosch fixed base upside down to the insert plate. When you turn Bosch's MRF01 base, for example, upside down, the entire weight of the router motor is suspended by a single E-clip, a spring clip held in a groove on the height adjustment shaft. That clip eventually gave way and left the motor unsuspended for height adjustments. Most fixed router bases use a similar design such that they're great when used right-side-up, but they're unacceptably weak when used upside down. Combine that problem with the inability to use a third-party router lift, and you end up with an annoying and awkward router table.

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert, thanks for your well thought out response. I can understand why the warped table leaves a sour taste, especially if you want to use your table for anything like jointing, makes it unusable.
      I didn’t know that the router plate was a non standard size! Interesting and frustrating if you already have another router. I know it’s designed to work with the 1617EVS and the height adjustment included but I hadn’t thought about height adjustment with other brands. That’s a great point.
      With regards to the mounting, are there not fasteners that attach your router to the router plate? The securement method I have and see on the plate is quite secure. I guess this assumes the default Bosch plate is used.

    • @robertpenoyer9998
      @robertpenoyer9998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NorthwestCraftsman To be clear, other router motors fit into the Bosch router plate. It has several hole patterns so that you can use other motors. However, the plates of third-party router lift manufacturers won't fit into the tabletop.
      Regarding the E-clip, I can speak only to the Bosch MRF01, the fixed base associated with the Bosch MRC23EVSK router system. Certainly, the fixed base is well secured to the insert plate. And, the main clamp of the base securely holds the motor in the base when routing. BUT, when the main clamp is loosened for height adjustment, the entire weight of the motor is suspended from the E-clip.
      This is getting into the weeds, but you can see an illustration of the E-clip this way: Go to the Bosch website and search for MRF01. Go to the product page that describes the MRF01 and then scroll down under "SUPPORT". Click the "More information" button under "Search for Parts Diagram". Enter "MRF01" (without quotes) in the "Tool Model Number" window and click the Search button. Then click "View Parts Diagram". Item 21 is the height adjustment shaft. Item 23 rides on Item 21 and its tab locks into a groove on the motor; the tab supports the motor when the main clamp is loosed for height adjustment. Item 22 is the E-clip, what the Parts List calls "Retaining snap ring"; THIS supports Items 21 and 23 and, thus, the weight of the motor.

    Woodworking noob and new subscriber with a question: Can this be used to make complete cuts, as in: with the ability to be adjusted to cut through the entire width of the board? (I'm looking for something to use for making tables, bookshelves, etc..) I noticed with your test piece the cut was only partially through the width. Again, obviously a noob question. Great video man! Thanks.

      Hey! Welcome to the channel! One of the primary reasons I started the channel was to share the process of learning to woodwork. So, no questions are too simple or off limits.
      Though it would be possible to do a through cut with a router, it would be difficult. For cross cuts (perpendicular to the grain), a miter saw, table saw, or bandsaw would be the tools of choice. For rip cuts (parallel with the grain and widest face up) a table saw or bandsaw are the tools of choice. And last, for resaw cuts (parallel to the grain and skinny side up - also not very common) a bandsaw is usually your tool of choice, though sometimes it is possible to use a table saw.

    Do you feel the red insert ring is too thin and the final surface is not flush enough?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve gone back and forth. It’s certainly not flush but I don’t generally rely on it to datum my parts, just prevent them from falling in. Bosch certainly left room for improvement.

    This is super helpful! Bought a router then quickly realized I needed a table (beginner), and I bought this one. Your video will be my go-to for set up, so thank you.
    I was wondering the height of your workbench. I bought a Craftsman early on and - it sure is pretty but - it’s too high for this. I don’t want to make that mistake again.
    What do you recommend for the height of the work bench for this, and how much space would you allow on either side, if it’s a stand alone piece?
    Thanks in advance! Ashlynn

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey Ashlynn! I’m glad you found it helpful! And no worries 😂 I’m right there with you. Always learning.
      If you are making your own workbench, you can customize it to exactly your height. Generally speaking, the height of your work benches will range somewhere between your waist and rib cage. The lower the workbench, the more you are leaning over it, but the more power you can get as your muscling through things. The taller it is, the less power you get behind it, but the more ergonomic and close to your eyes it is for fine work.
      For the router table I have mine at about my belly button. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to muscle anything across the router table, whatever bit you are using should easily cut. I may even opt to have it a little bit higher.
      However, when you are building that workbench, make sure to take into account the height of the router table. Seems like a stupid reminder, but I make those kinds of mistakes all the time. 😂

    Does this table come with above the table height adjustment?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does! The table itself doesn’t have a lift but interfaces with the 1617 EVS router frame to access the micro adjust from the table top. Below is a link to the EVS

      I can totally understand that. The router table was far more interactive to put together. As a followup on the router though, I have been very impressed by the combo. It’s held up to a lot of abuse and endless hours of work.
      Happy wood working!

    I’m thinking about mounting this table to a work bench without the plastics base, thoughts? Does this table have a router lift?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s actually a great idea to give you more space to work.
      I don’t think it has a true lift, just access for the Bosch fixed base which as a bottom side adjustment.

      You could always get a lift kit and mount it to a square piece of Aluminum or ply that fits in the top for this table.

    How do you adjust the bit height above the table?

    • @NorthwestCraftsman
      @NorthwestCraftsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bryan! Great question! When the router is mounted, it’s upside down in the table. There is a small hole in the skid plate and router plate which allows access for an included hex key to turn the micro adjustment knob. It works great! Easy to adjust within a few thou.

      Just about! The router plate has a ton of configurations to match different models. I use the Bosch 1617 and purchased the EVSPK which comes with both the plunge and fixed base for the router spindle. Honestly it’s my favorite tool in the shop.
