Prices on BC3 are too high. And the toe box shape on these is too perfect. I think you just sold me on copping a pair and converting them. NO finisher? Just use flat black?
You won't regret it! Definitely use a finisher. Just make sure you add a little bit of duller to the finisher so they don't end up as shiny as mine did.
@@SoleVice Got it. I usually use Krylon Matte finish cause Angelus is too glossy. But Idk if I want Krylon in this one, might look a little too matte. Duller mixed in a little angelus matte might have to do. Thanks again bro. Love the video. 🤙🏽
I feel the same way about these red 3's. The main reason I got them is simply because 3's and 4's are my favorites. I got my first pair of 3's in 1987 when I was in seventh grade and they instantly became my favorite pair out of the pairs of Jordans that I already had. I had red/white/black 1's and white/red/black 2's. As you stated, they finally got the shape and cut really close to the OG's. Now that they did so I have no problem painting these to make a black cement. It will actually be the closest to the OG's since the first retro 3's released in 1994. Really good video.
Mate, watched this video and did the custom step by step. Turned out good, considering it was my first time painting. Thanks for making this video, it saved me many hundreds of dollars compared to buying black cements at resale value (got the red cement on discount too, which was a bonus)
I'm kicking myself now. I saw these Red's a month ago at a thrift store...they still wanted $85 for them and condition was not great (toe and heel drag esp.), but uppers were not that horrible. The red for me was an instant turn off, but thought exactly after I left..."just paint them black with Angelus paint I have!" They were gone the next day. If I see them again in my size, maybe cheaper (hopefully) I will buy them just to paint them! Nice video!!
Thanks for the high quality and detailed video. I’m boutta do this custom this weekend. Every other tutorial seemed really rushed and went over certain details that you laid out clearly in this vid. Thanks a ton
i got these used but in mint condition for $130 and randomly saw this video i can’t wait till my paint comes in!! i’m finna rock these forever and keep touching them up
I sold my BC3's to do this...really digging the more OG cut and slimmer elephant print. I got the Red Cement 3's in the closet right now, but gotta find the balls to just do it lol. Worried about messing up somehow being my first custom
As you can see in the video the Angelus Matte finisher needs duller added to it to get rid of the shine. Duller is good to have around, you can add it to any color of acrylic paint that isn't flat to get rid of that cheap shiny look. Nice work!!!
Thanks for the video man! Going to try and do this myself hope it comes out as good as yours! Hope your wifes back it feeling better also! Have a great day man!
Yeah the Angelus matte finisher is only matte, compared to their other finishers. Learned that the hard way. Get a can of KRYLON matte finish spray. Angelus deglazer is basically just acetone and those little bottles go fast because it evaporates when it’s open. So just get a bit can of acetone. It can also be helpful to use a light sand paper on the shoe after you deglaze, will help the paint really grip the leather and reduce potential cracking Lastly, better safe than sorry, but if you’re careful and have a steady hand you don’t have to do that much taping Awesome video, great idea, super easy custom!
I actually just ordered some duller. Hoping I can just add some to my remaining finisher and apply that. I definitely DO NOT have a steady hand though. Hence the insane amount of tape 😂 Thanks for watching!
Sole Vice lol you did a good job taping for sure. Customizing sneakers is 90% taping and 10% painting 😆 that duller should help, in the future using less of the finish will help too. It look like you might have gone a little heavy. It’s still comes out glossier than matte, but the thinner the layer the better. Look into the krylon spray too if customs is something your gonna continue with. Sometimes I use Angelus finish, sometimes krylon, depends on the shoe but it’s a super nice matte.
never ever thought about doing this but im try it out i have the red cements from all start weekend in Chicago so in the back it says chi instead im make them black cements since i never was able to get the shoe ty for the video
Dope video!! Great job with the custom. I might need to go grab an extra pair of red cement 3s and turn them into a Sat project. Btw, hope wifey is feeling better.
Thanks Johnny! I definitely recommend doing it. Especially if you can find a pair for retail. Can't have too many pairs of BC3s! My wife is on the slow and steady mend. Thank you for your well wishes.
Sold. Came here specifically to confirm im converting mines into the Black cement for a fraction of the cost. Might even double up on a pair for a future custom. Hate how super Red the shoe was.
It’s Amazing That You Customized RCIII Into BCIII Looking Like OG Form See I Was Gonna Get 2018s But 2020 Release Got Greater Shape Than 2018 See I Might Double Em Up To Do White Cement & Black Cement If I Want To
great custom bro !! question. Since you said to not paint over the finisher... shouldn't you have taken care of the small details before applying the finisher?
The problem is that I didn't wan't to get finisher on the elephant print, so I had to leave the tape on when I applied the finisher. The details that I painted after the fact are so small, that it shouldn't be a problem. But yes, ideally you want to put on the finisher after all the paint has been laid down.
These look great but why people can’t duplicate what the factory do? In terms of cracking and so forth? Are they using a different paint or different process when painting?
@@SoleVice nooooo not on your pair. You killed these. I’m talking about long term. I’ve seen customs that crack in the creases. Then you have to repaint because spot painting doesn’t look good. No you killed these my guy. Just ordered a pair of these cement 3’s. You got me thinking about turning them in blacks.
Oh I get what you’re saying. Yeah I’m sure the manufacturers have higher quality paint and better environments to paint in that make the curing process better.
I just had my red cements customized to black cements but noticed the paint already cracking on the creasing parts in the areas that have the non-tumbled leather. Any advice as to how to correct this? Do I just paint over them again? Thanks in advance!
The reason it may be shiny with a matte finisher is because that finisher needs to be very even and light so often appears shiny when not applied extremely delicately with a paintbrush or it’s easy to do with an airbrush
@@SoleVice I'm doing my customs when my red cements arrive in the mail next week. Do you think my shoes will be okay if I just use the krylon matte finish spray as a protective coat and to get rid of the extra shine?
I think it would be okay, but without trying it I can’t say for sure. I feel like you’ll get a more even coverage by painting on the final coat though.
@@SoleVice Update: did my first custom paint job last night for the BC3. Came out super clean and matte look. I mixed a little duller with the flat black paint and it came out with no shine on the show and the duller/matte gave it a nice dullness too. Think I'll be painting the inner parts of the show with a toothpick.
I’m all about everyone earning their coins. Bro I want my Red Cement 3s to look close to the OG Black Cement 3s as possible I’m in love with the lower cut of the elephant print. How much would you charge me for you to do this custom. What’s your email I’ll email you if that’s best.
Man I would love to do that for you, but I literally don't have the time. I still haven't even gone back to fix mine by adding duller to the top coat. Between my day job and making content for the channel, I don't have time for much else😂
I had a bad experience with doing something similar with my Stealth Grey 3 in the end they came out horribly the black angelus paint wouldn’t bond to the suede properly I did everything wrong. And always wished I left them alone 😂
So I did this. Only thing I did different was use acetone instead of the prep/deglazer. I applied 4 coats of black paint with 2 coats of matte finisher. All angelus brand products. One thing I would do differently is to heat/warm forefoot and crease it and then maybe stuff the forefoot to stretch the leather. After a few wears, the leather stretched and crack the leather. Just look out for that. Had to retouch the shoe. But overall pretty happy. Message me if you want for more details.
For most people, it isn’t about having the “real” pair. I already have the 2018 release. The shape of the Red Cements is much closer to the original shape of the Jordan 3, so this custom results in a closer representation of the 1988 Black Cement 3. Unfortunately I haven't worn them much so I can't answer that for you.
will a 1 oz bottle for the flat black be enough?

Would you add duller in with the paint and finisher, or just the finisher?
I think adding it to the finisher is all you need to do with the matte black paint.
Can you follow these same steps if you’re painting them in white?
Yeah it should still work. You may need to apply more coats of white to cover the red, but everything else should essentially be the same.
You have to shake the bottle before you add the matte finish.
The reason it may be shiny with a matte finisher is because that finisher needs to be very even and light so often appears shiny when not applied extremely delicately with a paintbrush or it’s easy to do with an airbrush
That makes sense. I wanted to use an airbrush but it didn’t seem worth it for one custom. Kinda wish I had picked it up now haha.
