One thing that Alex regretted about the episode was that he didn't make clear that Robbie wasn't actually mind controlling Wendy. The backwards message was just in the song that he stole from, and he likely didn't even know it was there.
Frankly I think this is just a ret con because he wanted Robbie to be more redeemable. Its extremely clear in the episode that Robbie did choose to do it
@@kayden2119i don't think it's a retcon. Robbie chose to use the song to convince Wendy to stay with him, doesn't mean he knew there was a hidden 'mind control' message (that most likely doesn't work, else anyone who heard the song would be under the mind control, right?) in there. Like, since the first time i watched this ep, to me it was clear that the twist in this ep is that Robbie's just a plagiarist loser teen and Wendy just thought it was sweet when she believed he wrote a song for her, and she was never under any mind control.
@@kullaratt.9336 I feel like they were making him act like some mustache twirling villain the whole time. And it's not like he seemed very surprised when she found out the truth.
i definitely think he knew about the backwards message because of the way he was acting before and after it was revealed but i dont think it actually had any mind control properties and Wendy was just upset he didnt write it himself
Alex Hirsch clarified somewhere that Robbie's CD didn't have a secret message, it was just a weird coincedence. Robbie is just an angsty teenager that likes music, and Dipper couldn't fathom Wendy willingly taking Robbie back.
That makes sense, especially given his excuse of “I didn’t even write that song, I ripped it off some other guy,” which is part of what actually sets Wendy off because she thought it was sweet that he wrote a song for her only for it to turn out he was lying
I feel like that may have been a cop out to try and retcon robbie being a creep. When he pulled the cd out for the first time and said "I hope this works", that really implies he knows exactly what's on there
@@RyanTheLion335 eh, “hope this works” feels more like he’s just talking about hoping the song convinces Wendy not to break up with him, not that the song is literally supposed to be ‘working’ or doing anything out of the ordinary, if anything it’s a red herring so you’re on Dipper’s side when he thinks it HAS to be mind control.
@@RyanTheLion335 Could be, and it's a totally valid interpretation, but it's also valid to see it as Robbie wanting the song to make Wendy forgive him, without the hypnosis part.
A few spoiler-free things: 1. Alex Hirsch's twin sister Ariel begged him to make an episode about a supernatural boy band, so he made this episode for her. The cipher at the end says, "happy now, Ariel?" This whole episode was a gift to his sister. 2. He also got Lance Bass to do the voices of some of sev'ral times since Ariel really likes Lance Bass 3. Ariel actually voiced the line right here: 6:31
@reneevandyck7017 I learned about that too, it was really nice of Alex to make an episode of this show for his twin sister Ariel. I bet she happy that Alex made this episode for her
So the creator of the show (Alex) has a real life twin sister (Ariel) which Dipper and Mabel are loosely based on. Ariel was obsessed with boy bands and this episode was specifically written with her in mind. The coded message at the end of the episode is "Happy now, Ariel?" to really drive that home lol
Yeah I remember hearing that he asked her what kinda stuff she remembered from summer, or what things he should have Mabel and her friends do together or something, and she insisted that he needed to do an episode where Mabel, Candy and Grenda obsess over a boy band.
I appreciate that scene between Wendy and Dipper after he exposed Robby's lie. Wendy was very upset in the moment and clearly needed space and so it was pretty selfish of Dipper to try to get close with her literally after this breakup. It shows that even though Dipper is very intelligent, he still often doesn't understand certain social circumstances. Plus, there's also the age difference thing but I feel like that can be addressed better in a later episode.
Personally I don’t think Robbie used mind control. Partially cause Alex Heirsh clarified it wasn’t but also because it’s clear that Robbie isn’t knowledgeable enough about the supernatural or even about technology to even create such a CD. The best I can assume is that he got the CD from a creepy vendor saying it would make any girl hers but even then I doubt he would assume it actually has such powers and probably got it and thought it was a catchy song and his musical prowess is just that good
Robbie didn't make it but he still thought it would hypnotise her IMO. Pretty sure Alex Heirsch saying he didn't intend to is just a retcon because him having a "redemption" later and being one of the people in the circle is kinda weird if he tried to basically date rape Wendy. The episode makes it pretty clear that Robbie has ill intent when he's using the CD with the lighting and the dialogue.
@@tortoiseoflegends4466 maybe, like I mentioned I do think the CD might have been supernatural/sci-fi. However I don’t have much value in Robbie’s intelligence to know where to get something like that. And even if he did, or even if whoever he got it from told him it was supernatural, and if Robbie believed it, I don’t think he would have taken it. Not because Robbie’s too good but because the last two times he dealt with the supernatural(Fight Fighter and Convenience store ghosts) he was almost killed so if some guy was offering supernatural stuff Robbie seems like the type who would be off putted by that, and we do see that despite Robbie’s machismo he’s not really that brave or tough. Maybe his desire for Wendy might make him take the risk or he would be too stupid to think the plan could backfire, but I think that gives him way too much credit personally. To me he seems the type who would cower at this supernatural stuff and not want to mess with it and would need to display more confidence or more daring than he portrays to knowingly mess with the supernatural
@@tortoiseoflegends4466cus that's what the show want us to believe at first so we side with Dipper. They showed Robbie looking suspiciously evil through Dipper's eyes so we would think Dipper's right, just like in the first ep with a zombie turning out to be a bunch of gnomes. The twist for Dipper's plot line this ep IS there's no mind control. Robbie didn't know about the message (that most likely does not work, else everyone who hear it would be mind controlled, right?) and Wendy really just thought it was sweet when she believed he wrote the song for her.
The entire boy band was voiced by Lance Bass btw I was really hoping someone might tell you in the discussion part I really wanted to see y'all's reaction to that
Super funny episode that incorporates tropes in weird ways, which is pretty much a staple of gravity falls. the backwards subliminal messages and "all boy bands are clones" are definitely fun jokes and tropes of the music industry. I like that at this point the character's personalities are being more and more defined as the show goes on and you see that they're actually individuals with both positive and negative traits. these all come in later on as well. as for the cryptogram: During the end credits of this episode, the cryptogram reads "8-1-16-16-25 14-15-23, 1-18-9-5-12?" Once decoded, it reads "HAPPY NOW, ARIEL?." So Alex Hirsch has stated that the whole show was loosely based on his and his sister's, Ariel, time in the PNW as kids. I believe this was a reference to her love of boy bands and I also believe she actually responded to it at some point.

Oh well, the "Pre-Fab Four" band, The Monkees, happened during my teen years. (I didn't care for the "two actors and two real musicians band," either.)
I really just wanted wendy to have her bisexual awakening ansld get a girlfriend, that would be the best course of action for her honestly. Also yes wendy is canonically bisexual if you were wondering
@@Rayni_XZ.oI think it depends. Me dating a 27 year old as 30 year old? Yeah sure Me, a 15 year old high schooler dating someone who is still in middle school and 12? That feels so weird.
