Valentino Jakac The models give off the distinct steam smell due to the use of real steam from an immersion boiler, like the real things.

very finicky are they all like this? Would be nice to see a smooth slow start

I don't think that's really possible with live steam on a scale this small. The control system could be better, but the physics of steam engines don't really scale down as far as smooth slow running goes. They just don't have enough momentum to maintain it like the real thing can. You need an electric motor and good gearing to get slow smooth motion in small scale models.

@@michaelramsey82 "You need an electric motor and good gearing to get slow smooth motion in small scale models.", which far too many modern models fail to achieve, personally I would forego the gimmicks of firebox lights more like a blast furnace, painted cabs which any decent modeller can do themselves, and sprung buffers which for most modellers will never touch another vehicle anway, for better quality motors and gears.

I guess only one tank holds an immersion heater, can you buy 2 of these and connect 2
immersion tenders to 1 engine for longer run time or higher speed, if you have the radius for it?

Do we have to build these or is there some place we can buy them at?

Wouldn't be a proper steam locomotive if you didn't have episodes of wheel slip.
