Hi Bill, Eddie here! The “dodgy” paint work was on it when I bought it used 25 years ago! Thank you for bringing it back to life, I hope it fetches a good price for the SSPCA!
    Eddie 👍🏻👍🏻

Theres a coincidence. I have just finished servicing my Hornby Flying Scotsman and I turn this on! Thanks again for a fine video Bill I really enjoy watching you breathe new life into old locos.

It's amazing how just attending to the motor, cleaning and lubricating the drive-gear, followed by a wee touch of the 'Ronald Dodd' gives new life to this trusty locomotive. You mentioned that the loco is, perhaps not the best, but it's having the 'record-breaker' in our collection that matters! (Disappointed you decided not to repair the 'realistic chuffing sound'!). Otherwise, another great video. Cheers, Jim L

    Hi Bill
I think you'll find the the chuff chuff apple green version of the Flying Scotsman is the R855N (N for noise) rather than the R850.
I found this out a few days ago as I have both versions.
The R850 was a deeper green with a glowing fire box that came out in 1968.
The body mold is the same which is why the number is R850 on the body (Hornby did this to reduce costs) but the colour scheme changed with this release which I think was 1971.
    Hope this helps.

My Flying Scotsman had the chuff chuff sound, and I don't recall it haveing the 'N' as part of the number! Mine also had the glowing firebox.

@@mikeking2539 I checked again and the 1971 catalogue says chuff chuff AND glowing fire box for the R855N.
Mine doesn't have the firebox so maybe that was dropped in later years?

Excellent overhaul! Might I suggest that, if possible, you add a link to the Ebay listing for these locos you are selling for charity - when you do it. Get as wide an audience for them as possible.

Could i make a small request that you include one or two close-ups of the motor mechanisms. I watch many of your repairs but i am not always familiar with the finer points you are servicing. Thanks for the videos.

in all the different versions i wonder how many triang / hornby hornby flying scotman locos have been made , has to be over a million

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I doubt it's anything like that many. The overwhelming majority of them will have remained in the UK, so a million made would equate to about one for every sixty people.

@@beeble2003 correct at one point in time but we are talking about production close to sixty years and exports too if not a million it has to be in the 100s of thousands not forgetting it would also be used in other guises

Re broken brush - I discovered you can solder the contact back onto the arm if no spare is on hand. Polish and lightly tin the area of the arm where the carbon brush should be and then wipe the tip of the soldering iron clean (I use a wadded a tissue for this - be quick or the tissue starts to burn). Place the the carbon brush (with the curved surface down) on a firm surface. Use needle nosed pliers to locate the tinned area over the brush and apply heat and light pressure on the back of the arm. Make sure the arm is correctly oriented with the curve worn into the brush before heating. Wait a few seconds after removing heat to allow the solder to harden.
