"Why put criminals, rapists and murderers, in jail? They don't do anything good there, eh?"
We have here one of the pillars of the imperial army. It has been specified several times that he is an excellent strategist, responsible for the deaths of countless people. And that if he is released, it will probably be impossible to recapture him because the improbable situation which allowed his capture (and which cost a large number of lives) will not recur.
And ... "If we freed him, in exchange for a few thousand lives? Look, I'll give you light points!"
Seeing that the only logical, ethical and moral reaction was a "dark" choice left me speechless.

@@Konmael The dark side is probably due to fact that releasing him denies Saresh the possibility to recover thousands of Republic prisoners. Who knows, perhaps great scientist or special agents are in there too.
I think the cinematic and dialogues fail to show pragmatism in both choice so that's why the Dark one seems better

@@farseeraradrel4808 What it seems to me is that the Chancellor is trying to make herself look good in the eyes of her supporters. Save thousands while the entire galaxy, and let millions, billions, hell possibly even trillions burn away, quietly going into the night. This feels nothing more than a cheap political move.
Yes, it is sad and unfortunate that thousands of prisoners will likely be killed or worse, but there is always the chance they might be recovered later.
You know, there's a quote from a game I like from Infamous 2: "For the thousands that died, millions were gonna live." I feel like it applies well to this decision.

depending on how you look at it, they actually got the idea right
dark side isnt "bad" its just emotional, prideful, principled, potentially destructive and selfish but grounded and powerful
dark-siders arent always mean and dont always refuse to help people, theyre more generally against wanton charity and generosity, believing it weakens people to be taken advantage of or grow complacent
you dont do much good helping someone so much that they cant function without you
just like light-side isnt always "good" cause its also detached, 'above' the world, submitting to the will of the force and the universe above your own goals, whimsical and while yes light-siders do think immediately of the most help and generosity they can perform to those around them they dont think of the consequences of allowing themselves to be a crutch to be leaned on

@@CaptainPrincess Admiral Trench had this very mindset, and would've been right in his assumption that since a jedi came to take him away, he would simply be sent back for a couple war prisoners. Unfortunately for him, he met Anikan who was at the time, a perfect mix of rational thinking (dark-side) and willing to still do good, in the end he didn't kill for the sake of killing, but because Trench forced his hand, but also denying his enemies of the perks of their greatest Admiral.

    • @CaptainPrincess
      @CaptainPrincess 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@@bibby659 dark side isnt the rational side its the emotional side
granted your emotions and your rationality are often deeply connected, thats the human condition
but its a characteristic of the light side to be SO rational as to elevate yourself above emotional existence and detach yourself from the world where people have to live and get by
he didnt kill trench for the sake of killing, but killing trench was definitely an emotionally driven response to the problem he presented
the RATIONAL thing to do wouldve been to take him prisoner and extract useful information, while still depriving the separatists from accessing him
outright killing him solves a lot of problems but inefficiently and leaves plenty others yet unsolved

@@CaptainPrincess but this instance, the clear good choice is eliminating the threat. a darksider would kill rakton, a lightsider imprison him. from any angle you look at it, keeping rakton in prison saves the most lives. hes more destructive than the bloody sith silencer. Rakton would in one BATTLE probably kill more than republic would gain back in prisoners. itd be like taking the silencer away only to give it right back to the empire. you don't put weapons into the hands of your enemies; not even a jedi would give a lightsaber to a street thug (literal whole clonewars episode about that responsibility), let alone the single deadliest man back to the sith, because then they would be responsible for all the deaths they caused going forward.

    I have two Troopers.
A bastard who thinks only of war and combat. Killing enemies and being praised for it makes him feel important !
A "nice" who does her duty in all circumstances.
What is completely paradoxical is that :
    - the bastard chose to release him (It was a selfish choice. We don't care about the few thousand people released! What matters is that an officer, an excellent strategist, is released. Because that can only cause more war)
    - the good one chose not to release him (thus saving millions, at the cost of life of a few thousand)
Often in SWTOR the Dark / Light choices are inconsistent, as the player is taken for an idiot unable to think long term.

@@olorinmagus4479 Meritocracy is a thin veneer over the Empire's caste system and slavery (which is frankly not workable as a system). For a look at the Empire in action, look at how well it functions on Balmorra or literally anywhere not part of their equally dysfunctional worlds like Kaas...or Ziost.

@@user-be5kj1bw3d oh, in it’s original form yes. But post Eternal Empire it does improve a great deal. It’s not perfect, but neither is the Republic. It’s only a matter of what their flaws are. And Balmorra was a conquered world that had yet to assimilate. And even pre-eternal empire, the Sith inquisitor is basically the poster child for the Empire’s ideals. From a slave to sitting on the Dark Council

In a practical situation, I'd use Rakton as part of a bargaining chip as a means of getting a ceasefire set up. Hand over a couple resource worlds under stipulations of conduct towards the populace, and organize an exchange of war criminals from both sides. Sith war criminals get sent to the republic for appropriate punishment, republic war criminals get sent over to the Sith, stuff like that.
SWTOR boils down the morality system WAY too thin, to the point where it's written to be downright insulting to anyone who wants to contemplate in-universe consequences. That, among other reasons, is why I dropped that game. It also runs like molasses on any of my systems, and add that to the pay-to-progress system they have for the game.

From what I see Saresh did and will do in the future, I doubt she really care for the lives of republic prisoners. She just want reputation from "her" strategy so people especially the prisoners' family will vote her in the next election.
Saresh: "Think of the countless families reunited--thousand of husbands and wives, parents and children, all brought home at last."
What she meant: "Think of the countless votes from their families--thousand of husbands and wives, parents and especially children, all will be grateful to me. I could maintain my power as supreme chancellor for decades."
