I feel like they dumbed Knuckles down because people have been calling him stupid for being tricked by Eggman a few times. I have seen some fan animations that depict Knuckles this way, even before Boom existed. This feels like by comparison, Knuckles is not meant to be an idiot, just naive du to his lone isolation before meeting Sonic and the others.
