20HP, 9,000 RPM Engine Build! 88MPH Kart Pt. 3

  • We’re building an 88mph back to the future inspired go kart from the American Express 2.0 go kart kit from Go Power Sports. To achieve 88mph, we need a very powerful engine, which is why we’re building a hemi head Predator 212cc engine with really high performance and brand new engine mods, like a 24mm flat slide carburetor, elongated billet rod, oversized valves, and more. We’re taking this popular 212cc 6.5 horse power go kart engine and making it turn 9,000 RPM and put out about 20 horse power.

As an engine builder.. you need to know that the aluminum rod will expand when it heats up, about twice as much as a steel rod. Measure your deck clearance at TDC after you assemble everything to make sure the piston wont smack into the head. I'm sure the maker of the rod will have a recommendation, but on the engines I build, aluminum rods usually need .060 to survive... CC your head, and piston, so you can calculate your compression. Will let you know how much room you have to wiggle.

I really enjoy watching you guys do mods to these small engines. None of which I've ever tried. Now however if I was so enclined to do so, I'd feel more comfortable doing them.
Keep up the fantastic informative/educational help video's!!! 😊

If you ever decide to build another amphibious go-kart or maybe a Predator powered paddle-wheeler/stern-wheeler boat I might be willing to give you my 1974 Boston Whaler 13' boat (w/title) if you would use it for the channel.
Could become a cool little river boat to travel from Washington, NC to Greenville, NC and back? Just a thought...

Hey guys, big fan. Love your videos. Just want to point out that there are dramatic differences on torque specs with wet or dry bolt threads. Torque specs are generally dry unless specified. If you use provided torque specs, it is intended for dry threads, no lube or thread lock. If you use those specs with wet (lubricated or thread lock) threads, you can over torque the threads. Keep making great videos. You've brought life back to my love for go karts.

I just got done tearing into a 5.5 hp engine to get a free log splitter running so i had to watch this. One thought, I was told once that torque specs are only accurate for clean dry threads, so any substance from never seize to silicone to motor oil throws off the accuracy of a torque wrench. Not sure how much, probably a whole video worth of research here but thought I'd chime in when i saw y'all lube the threads of the one bolt you wanted to be sure about torque-ing down.

If you are going to shave the head with sand paper get the glue back stuff and stick it to a piece of glass and hand sand. This technique leaves the best/perfectly flat mating surfaces you need at those rpms. Also you really should polish the exhaust runner as well as the combustion chamber as it will reduce the heat that transfers into the head during and after combustion which may cause your valve seats to eventually fail at those rpms not to mention mess with your valve lash settings (best way to lash valves is with the engine at operating temperature too).

don't shave that head, really!! at high RPM the higher compression is going to hammer wrist pin and rod bearing even harder. for really high RPM's you want a little lower compression, because high compression can also act to limit RPM's lower. really high compression is great for more torque+power at lower RPM's, but you're trying to spin this up like a 2-stroke!
you've already got .020 gain with that rod, you can always try a thinner head gasket or head shaving later, be safe!

no, compression has nothing to do with rpm. and if so it helps to get even higher rpm since there is a bigger explosion to push the piston down the bore. and they said that the original rod is weak the ARC rod will easily take the forces

Also for the life of the engine and most hp i would highly consider having the crankshaft balanced after 4,000rpm. Everything you do to a car/truck engine you do to the small engines. Same concepts if that makes any sense. Hope this helps more then the other comment😂

Ike, instead of wrapping sandpaper around your finger you can get various grits of flap wheels for your die grinder & you can carefully cut a slit into a piece of 1/4" steel rod and use pieces of roll sandpaper to make a polishing flap wheel. It sure beats using your finger...unless you just really enjoy that kind of thing... ;)
