      hey there, I was wondering whether the cushion wrap was necessary for graps, and if it wasn't the pros of using it.

  • @wagjkproduction755
    @wagjkproduction755 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    To not have crease when applying super grap, just stretch it harder when you apply. The material is actually quite stretchy and they can shape to the handle unevenly and automatically remove the creases. Also make the stride a little shorter at the bottom cap & the top area, it'll have a less chance of having crease.

    • @CKYew
      @CKYew  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, I didnt want to stretch it really hard as I like some 'give' in the grip.

    I seen from some videos that cushion wrap is a norm for the whole team, it is getting popular recently as it allows adjustment of thickness of grip and reduce vibrations felt.

    Only thing I would add is you have to think how the grips affect the weight and balance of the racket. Personally, I switched to towel when I started using my astrox 99s. Even though they increased the weight of the racket overall, they made it slightly less head heavy and easier to play with.
    Before, I was using ars 98k which was super headlight so I used the thinnest possible grip to compensate.

    Nice! I also wrap Graps the same way you do and I prefer them over towel grips and PU grips. As you've shared, making a mistake while wrapping with PU grips peels off the sticky part of the grip which is a no-no for me. It also breaks into very small bits which is annoying cause the bits get scattered in my bag. As for towel grips... I just don't like it because it smells LOL 😅

    My latest is g5 size, 1 layer of cushion and overgrip [0.5-0.6mm] (no electrical tape etc, makes it too handle heavy for me).
    My hand size is size 9-9.5 (m/l).
    Generally I like the manoeuvrability of the thin shaft and happy to sacrifice grip power.
    Edit: yes my ocd kicks in when people wrap over that cone...
    Specifically if you use power on the cone area, you can loosen the glue and eventually crack the handle because the cone is loose, the result is a clicky racket on swing.
    I've not had that since stopping to wrap all the way to the cone.

      Thin grips for the win!

    • @imataquito005
      @imataquito005 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thinner grip gives more finger play and if you are like me who grips the handle with my fingers in sequence and flicking my wrist to generate lots power with a small swing a thinner grip makes a huge difference... My hands are relatively large but I still use a tiny grip...

    Usual tip: Most of the time, new rackets usually have shrink wrap over factory grip. Simply apply your choice of grip over that and you won't need to use electrical tape over the wood handle

    • @krizaey8782

      Does the shrink wrap has protection against sweat like the electrical does?

    • @evokaiyo
      @evokaiyo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@krizaey8782 Yes, because it's plastic and covers the entire factory grip, so the sweat won't get into the factory grip. You can even replace the shrink wrap with a new one in case you tear it off accidentally. Electrical tape can be used, but I find it leaves a horrible sticky residue when you have to remove it

    • @krizaey8782

      @@krizaey8782 No, because I don't use the shrink wrap as the grip. The shrink wrap is to protect the factory grip from dirt and sweat. What I do is to apply overgrip over the shrink wrap

    As an OCD XD I use a hairdryer if I wanted to remove the original grip, it is so satisfying to see the grip coming out in a full piece and the barcode still intact. Doing the same there, 2 to 3 rounds on the bottom, it is more comfortable and secure doing it that way, creases can be avoided by giving it a little pull. Creases on the grip is not acceptable it is an eyesore, it burns my eyes ^o^

    Lol....I've been using the sponge cushion over graps I think even before the racket manufactures started marketing them as accessories. They are the same as the first aid cushion wraps that are used to go over your sprained joints before you wrap the elastic support wraps. Buying the first aid generic version are way cheaper as well.

    Hey CK, thanks for the detailed breakdown of this underrated subject. I was wondering what you thought about towel grips breaking apart and leaving a sort of stain on your hand once you start playing and sweating? By breaking apart, I mean the little bits of the cotton that fall off onto your house's floor even when you're applying the grip to the handle and certainly during play. It gets a bit a messy I found; thoughts on that?

    Hi CK, do you feel that by using different grips with different weight it would change the feel and balance of the racquet when you swing it and on impact? Adding electrical tape does the same thing. I have weighted it and it seems electrical tape adds ard 4g, Yonex cusion warp at 4 layers 2g, and individual Yonex overgrap ac102ex that comes in 30 at 5g and individual graps at 6-7g. Tend to replace the electrical tape with cling warp from the kitchen due to weight concerns. Used to do it exactly like what you do until one day when I learned that my 4u racquet was so much heavier at 90+g and super headlight due to all the steps and pu grip I used. 😂

    So, when I saw that your name was CK Yew I thought you were Lee Cheuk Yiu the badminton player. To confirm it, I googled the player and you know what, it took me a really hard time to finally come to conclusion that you were not him. 💀💀💀💀💀💀

      Grip - thicker with sticky double sided tape.
      Grap - thinner with no sticky tape.

    Sorry, but you are very bad at wrapping grips, reason why your towel grip comes off is because you are not wrapping it like over grip.
