If I was an expert I would have a much better opinion but here it goes : Is there an elephant in the room? Is Pogacar an elephant? 🥸. Muriel Furrer lying alone helpless in the forest for an hour is another pachyderm. I don't think we'll get answers anytime soon.
He took the Vuelta off, which gave him the time to do altitude training instead, either by staying at elevation, or use of altitude tent. Altitude training takes several weeks, and increases concentration of hemoglobin. And typically the effect lasts a couple of weeks. Altitude training is legal according to WADA, and I would be surprised if most pros don't avail themselves.
Edit- there is an ongoing police investigation into Muriel’s incident, despite all our emotions running high on the subject, it would be inappropriate for GCN or other media outlets to speculate at this time. Original- It’s time to stand up to the UCI properly GCN, your platform matters. Muriel lay dying on the side of the road for an hour and a half before she was found with a serious head injury, found by pure chance. She was passed by every race official, every medic, every support car, and the broom wagon. She had a race transponder, and a head unit with her, and still no one realised. It took 2.5 hours to get her to a hospital that was THREE minutes away. THREE. Deaths in cycling are always tragic, but something of an inevitability. This one was not. This one puts blood directly on the hands of the UCI, and makes me sick.
And the fact that you could watch her crash live on the TV but nobody said anything 5 minutes later the commentary said there may have been crash but that was it.
I would argue it's not just down to the UCI. It's down to all the stakeholders to determine what safety really looks like in cycling as a sport. It's such an easy word to speak of yet it's such a different thing to get right and manage effectively. The UCI cannot directly manage safety - they can only set the requirements to create a safe sport. Such a tragic outcome and this should shock the sport just like other industry failures. Yes, its a sport with high risk and thus the medical response to any accident should be sh*t hot. The fact that Muriel lay undetected for so long was catastrophic.
Selfie Lappartient is too busy campaigning for the IOC presidency to give a damn. There have been nine racing deaths during his eight-year reign as UCI president. Has any other sport had that many athletes die during that period? The man got to go.
So Tadej and me have one thing in common : we both live in a hilly area, which makes it difficult to do long, sustained Z2 rides. The slight difference is : his problem is the downhill parts, mine is rather the uphill sections 🙂
In regards to Muriel Furrers death: the thing that nearly made me cry seeing the images and reading about it in the news was that on the memorial ride, which took place instead of the open race, ~1500 people turned up at 7 in the morning... I was in bed due to illness, but otherwise might have joined aswell.
Your comments about Zwift generating new professional cyclists reminded me about how I first came across Jay Vine. Years ago after swearing at my computer issues while zwifting, wifey tagged me in a post about a cyclist who lost power while competing on zwift titled “the pain is real”. It was none other than JV, who was relatively unknown at the time. I now point him out to wifee every time the cameras focus on him in a major race on tv - “See? He started on zwift and now he’s a pro. This is why I need a better router.”
@@justliberty4072 no, that's cause they have to use Shimano's power meter which is the worst on the market - in fact the only one which gives hugely unreliable data at all...

The worst part about Muriel Furrer's death is it shouldn't have happened. Apparently she laid in the forest for almost two hours after the crash, before anyone got to her. Doctors are saying she most likely would have survived if she had been helped sooner. Rest in peace, Muriel. You didn't deserve to go out like that.
I still remember my best (and last ever) 20 min FTP test (I've stopped doing them). From experience I decided to hold 320 Watts as long as I could, in order to finish with an average over 300W. I finished at 302W and it left me curled up on the floor. Is there such a thing as Zone 10? That's what the final 5 minutes felt like as I desperately tried to hang on to the watts. A near-death experience. It is beyond my comprehension, as fairly decent 287W FTP cyclist, that someone can bimble along at 340W for a few hours, presumably chatting to his mates. Incredible.

The interesting half-sentence about heart rate was something along the lines of „how it reacts on a good day and on a bad day“. That‘s worth diving into. I often feel I can tell if an interval session or FTP test will be good or bad from how the hr goes up during the warm up.

Re any comparison of riders from different eras, it would be interesting to hear about the training and racing and lifestyle conditions of the year Eddy got his triple vs. Tadej today. And Stephen Roche, too, the '80s which were edging toward the future while still being very much that blue-collar old school. And I'm not fussing about the King's crowning of Tadej as best, just that the scenes half a century ago for Eddy and four decades ago for Stephen were different mountains to climb to get those triples, so was it the same or easier or harder or not really open to a fair comparison. And then there's the issue of injured competitors, Greg LeMond was not there in '87 and Tadej's top rivals were injured earlier this season. And whatever the outcome, all interesting to consider, even if the King has already handed the crown to Tadej as the greatest bicycle racer the world has ever known.
Pog said it himself in a roundabout way - his Shimano power meter is inaccurate. If he is climbing in the small ring on his Z2 rides, it’s overreading by ~20W. So still very impressive, but knocks it down from 5W/kg

@@kipcc3918 I don't think you understand how drug tests work. They are entirely reactionary. As the saying goes, drugs won the war on drugs. You can't test for drugs that you aren't aware about. And you also can't accurately test drugs with short half-life's.
My benchmark has always been to aim for 50% of the professionals' capacity... And I think I train quite systematically, 7-12 hours per week. Those are absolutely insane numbers.
He is the worlds best, a multi talented rider who wants to win, not podium, win. A completely different mindset to almost everyone else. His comparisons to the other best throughout history are similar, drive, total commitment, there are no 2nd places. However he is from a generation that has data, comparing him to EM is all well and good, but if EM had the same data?? Pointless though as they are the greatest of their era. Once in a generation, just like all sports have them, but they don’t come under anywhere near as much scrutiny 🤬 let’s enjoy him. It’s up to everyone else to catch him up not for him to dumb down his results. Just like sky, they changed the game, and it was down to other teams to up their game. I hope he wins everything he wants. The other greats need to stop being cowards and worry about podium finishes, if TP can go for it so can others who are riding within themselves, if the continue they will keep losing.
I already find gravel bikes somewhat undergeared for the climbs in my area. I can only imagine the increase in circumference of a 50c on a long 17% grade would in fact make me significantly slower.
This may have been pointed out already, but Merckx later corrected those quotes re TP being better than him, saying something to the effect that ‘he (TP) has a long way to go before he surpasses me’. The TP of today is the rider EM would’ve been, without that crash on the track in late 1969
11:00 this kinda sticks out to me - i imagine there must be many who are discouraged from participating in events because they don't feel their power numbers line up to what they feel is necessary, and i'm sure that results in many riders at the very least missing out on a good day on the bike with likeminded individuals. I know Jeff from Norcal cycling has spoken many times on the value of tactical nouse over raw power from his experience in US Crit racing for example, but i wonder if GCN might have anything to say from a broader perspective? Would make a good title, "power isn't everything"
Yeah I know what you mean. In my case though it wasn’t about fun days out on the bike, it was how I was paying my mortgage. And having been working hard and making sacrifices for over a decade I realised that I wasn’t ever going to get to the top. And I’ve loved riding my bike just as much ever since.

Tadej Pogacar revealing his training and habits are like when your grandma gives you her secret recipe: You have all of the ingredients and instructions. However, when you make it, it does NOT taste ANYTHING like grandma's.
Some people have surmised that Pogacar's good form this year has come from more intensity of training. However, I can't help wonder if Inigo San Milan is right on the money when he says that building the mitochondrial engine is what's important. I reckon 340 watts zone 2 *by itself* is going to win some races simply because it vastly reduces the amount of time you spend out of zone 2. If you also consider that it will be constantly sparing carbohydrates, coupled with taking in 120 grams of carbs per hour, there is going to be a *lot* left in the tank when the hard efforts start. The main question for me, though, is this monstrous Z2 power *all* genetic or are there some lessons to be learned from the training techniques. Long Z2 rides to heart rate for the win? How much intensity do you need to increase the power ceiling? And is it possible that since Pogacar doesn't like turbo training sessions, is the off-on nature of his hilly training actually an unintentional component of his success? It would be interesting to try 20 minutes of high Z2 followed by 5 minutes of basically nothing over and over and over again to see if it had a beneficial effect.
Putting bottles or any other thing that is cup like upside down is actively working against your best interest. You should instead wash them with HOT water, as hot as you can get it, dry by hand as best you can, and then place right side up so that any lingering moisture can evaporate without being trapped within the bottle.
It depends where you live, but in most in Europe if you are employed you will have proper accident insurance, you dont need to buy additional for that. Just check. Only limit sometimes is if you need to be evcuated by helicopter.
What I wanted to hear about but Peter didn’t or wasn’t allowed to ask was about Tadeh’s changing coaches. Why and what’s different now. Because it certainly changed his outcomes.
I can't help it, but had huge interrest in cycling during and before the Lance days. Lost it but after that, but gradually regained it over many years. This performance Tadej show smells similar, maybe even more than Lance achievements. No matter what "legal" trainig course he might be on I bet there is some stuff that add something to it. I would buy it if he showed this strengths "now and then" or under a period. He just keep on crushing anything in race after race. Todays Emilia just another one, and Lombaardia will be a walk in the park. As back in Lance days journalist was on both side and sadly it took years to get what was wrong. Fear this will be the same with Tadej. Tadej today got UAE and Saudi behind which means lots of money for UCI so they might not be too serious to dig deeper. Of course not starting in Olympic might be reason since that is a different ruling body. Consiperacy of course, but surely his results and numbers are over the moon. Is he not human. Too many journalists today and TV folks are afraid to even breath foul play, but that was as in the Lances days. For Tadej sake I hope I'm totally wrong.
What is anyone supposed to say? If Dan and Si sat there and repeated over and over again unfounded opinions that someone is doping, what does that achieve? Anyway, there are plenty of people doing it in the comments 🙄

The interesting half-sentence about heart rate was something along the lines of „how it reacts on a good day and on a bad day“. That‘s worth diving into. I often feel I can tell if an interval session or FTP test will be good or bad from how the hr goes up during the warm up.
#captioncompetition. After hearing Dan's captions. Tadej Pogačar was happy to hear The creators have a sence of humour. As well as a box of crickets.
It's not an easy task to feed the crickets when they keep trying to escape.
I would love to know the Pogacar's VO2max? But I'm sure is not the same as Dan's in his peak 😂😅
its slightly below 90
In the words of Pog himself: I think it is high 🤣
I would love to know the truth
Re Swift inactive worlds hack. You can use any workout for this and, once you're in the world, end the workout early using the skip button on the companion app (or just swipe the workout segments away), or the tab button on your keyboard.
Tacx I-Magic: Over ten years before Zwift, I was cycling in VR using Tacx's software. Tacx also had real world videos long before the likes of Rouvy. Tacx were pioneers, but Garmin has snuffled out any further advances in technology.
It’s 340 metric watts though
😂😂😂
So that's about 0.45hp /s
Don't forget Tadej's scandalous backflip into the pool last year during the tour!
RIP Bob. Im still riding the second of 2 Parlee carbon Z1 (serial numberPCZ05JS4183) with carbon lugs (only 2 were ever made as productions cost were astronomical) An amazing bike from 2005.
29:28 The World Champion is riding around with 'niceHash' written across his arse. Errrrr?!
If you add routes you haven’t yet ridden to My List in the Companion, they show up in your For You section to ride any time
Thanks for the tip!
One thing is for sure-said interview dealt a major blow to all of us- aspiring Freds who think we do very well on the Sunday group rides with the buddies.🤣😂😅
Petter Attia: What about your VO2 Max?
Pog: I think it is high.
🤣😂😅 It is son, it is.
“Stuffed but chuffed” might be my new favorite saying!
Even better than Lance when Lance was doped.. Give me break! We all know he’s on the sauce bro. No doubt talented, but also doped to the eyeballs.
For a zone two training session that lasts 3 hrs or more what foods should/can you eat? The usual carbs or should you stick to protein?
Pog said it himself in a roundabout way - his Shimano power meter is inaccurate. If he is climbing in the small ring on his Z2 rides, it’s overreading by ~20W. So still very impressive, but knocks it down from 5W/kg
Skeptics on the comment section, Here’s a tip, Fund an “ Independent “ Drug test to really test y’alls assumptions. I’m curious for that result as well. 🤷♂️
@@kipcc3918 I don't think you understand how drug tests work. They are entirely reactionary. As the saying goes, drugs won the war on drugs. You can't test for drugs that you aren't aware about. And you also can't accurately test drugs with short half-life's.
Cyclists have and will always be a step ahead of WADA and the UCI let alone an independent system.
@@robertombetta So they are guilty until proven otherwise?
@@zon3ful It is the opposite, innocent till proven guilty. Most fans are happier this way.
@@robertombetta That is why samples are supposedly kept forever. How they use the sample in the future is a whole other question.
My benchmark has always been to aim for 50% of the professionals' capacity... And I think I train quite systematically, 7-12 hours per week. Those are absolutely insane numbers.
160W should be achievable, no?
Caption competition. "There's a lot to be said about Pogacar, butt..."
I am surprised that GCN doesn’t do such interviews with the Pros.
I already find gravel bikes somewhat undergeared for the climbs in my area. I can only imagine the increase in circumference of a 50c on a long 17% grade would in fact make me significantly slower.
#CaptionCompetition
Poggy's done with being the Hulk...he's now auditioning for the Hunchback of Notre Dam!! 🤣🤣
I could be riding my bike, but your show is first. thanks!!
Give your editor a raise because those cuts @5:00 were fucking GOLDEN
Tadej left everyone on his backside thinking, "NiceHash". # captioncompetition
This may have been pointed out already, but Merckx later corrected those quotes re TP being better than him, saying something to the effect that ‘he (TP) has a long way to go before he surpasses me’. The TP of today is the rider EM would’ve been, without that crash on the track in late 1969
#captioncompetition Pogacar waiting for team car while in the lead: "... should have ordered delivery 100km ago" 😂
I actually quite liked "Hmm, shoulders, knees and toes" : )
🚴♀️
#captioncompetition: Tadej heads up you’re dropping us, Tadej Tadej?? TADEJ!!!!
I did not quite hear, you were on the sorry hills or surrey hills? 😂
It depends on the day you ask. 🤣
people used to do gravel,
just with bikes that allowed wider tires.
........... the industry went full circle.
Love the diary entry!
I still ride my 2019 Orbea Orca Aero that I won from GCN after coming up with that paint work on the MyO program.
Great to hear! Dan
There are some Richard Cranium drivers in Straya, it’s not just on the longest straight section of road in the world on the driest inhabited continent on earth
It would be interesting to try 20 minutes of high Z2 followed by 5 minutes of basically nothing over and over and over again to see if it had a beneficial effect.
san milan is gone, Sola in, the biggest reason of Pogacar form this season
I was riding gravel over 50 years ago on a Schwinn Stingray.
Well, maybe it's something new for those who weren't born 50 years ago 🤣
#CaptionCompetition Tadej drops head in regret of his 103km attack, gaining the aero advantage to make it stick.
How about adding a new segment to the show? A weekly quote from one of your old training diary entries. Could be a lot of fun and also insightful.
Putting bottles or any other thing that is cup like upside down is actively working against your best interest. You should instead wash them with HOT water, as hot as you can get it, dry by hand as best you can, and then place right side up so that any lingering moisture can evaporate without being trapped within the bottle.
Another thing Pog has in common with Dan is the ability to knock back a beer, like at Amstel gold last year.
It depends where you live, but in most in Europe if you are employed you will have proper accident insurance, you dont need to buy additional for that. Just check. Only limit sometimes is if you need to be evcuated by helicopter.
for the caption that attack really blew his mind
Actually he said he only does the 320-340w up climbs when its hilly and his flatter 5 hour rides are around 300w. Still impressive though.
pogi did back to back ITT's for the rainbow and remco, just let him ride off.
think about this, rainbows make you better
Paint Conner green and you’re more likely to have the Jolly Green Giant than the Hulk.
I dind't understand how his zone 2 is 320-240 watts but he said he averaged 380 watts in the flat section of the 2020 stage 20 tt
#captioncompetition despite Tadej being on his way to the triple crown, he tried desperately not to get “ahead” of himself.
#CaptionCompetition Pogačar heads off to the win.
Doping needs to be talked about
Too much money involved. Noone is allowed to say a bad word…
What is anyone supposed to say? If Dan and Si sat there and repeated over and over again unfounded opinions that someone is doping, what does that achieve? Anyway, there are plenty of people doing it in the comments 🙄
A lot of words.. Ok, Yoga definitly, has an accurate estimate, Pogačar s Achievement in Road cickling. Namaste.
Did you consider the bag for commuting? For example for laptop etc. I also do commute (80km one way) and take lot of things with me since I go there for two days. So I think this is good idea for not scraping your bike whilst need for commuting :)
That first hack was a super nice. 🔔
#captioncompetition 100km to go?! He’s off like a headless chicken!
