  • Panic! at the Disco's song "This Is Gospel" will always have some of my favorite lyrics from them. In this video, I react to and explain the meaning and lyrics of this epic song. Of course, it came out a while ago, so be sure to jog your memory by listening to the song again. You can't do so enough.
Panic! at the Disco's "This Is Gospel" is about faith and drug addiction, but mostly the latter. The meaning of the lyrics is deep and personal, perhaps going back further into band history than you think. In any case, if you love Panic! at the Disco or "This Is Gospel," you will enjoy this video. Happy lyrics-meaning-figuring-out!

I think that the line "the fear of falling apart" could be Brendon afraid of Spence falling apart or like you said their friendship because Brendon is going against Spencer's wishes (since he's telling him to stop)

Unfortunately, I mispronounced "Brendon," but rest assured I know his name is "Brendon." It's a fault of someone who talks faster than they think. :)

Wait!!!! I just realized that since Emperor's New Clothes is the sequel to This is Gospel and ENC is about dying and going to hell and it says quote on quote "If it feels good tastes good it must be mine" ENC could also be about Spencer's drug addiction....maybe I'm kind of bad at this stuff but it might be...

This song's meaning is really up to individual interpretation

  • @GacktSe7en
    @GacktSe7en 6 ปีที่แล้ว +50

This is how I see what the meaning of the song is.
This is gospel for the fallen
    ones.
(The songs a warning to everyone or in this case the fallen one's, talking to the ones who don't hold tight to the Gospel of God. Instead of God's gospel, this song is a Gospel to them, to the ones who are fallen, meaning those who aren't gonna make it.)
Locked away in permanent slumber, assembling their philosophies, from pieces of broken memories.
(Everyone in this world has gone through some kind of suffering, but in this case it's for those who can't let go of their past. Their past which is like a slumber, they're stuck in their broken memories. And the philosophies that they're trying to assemble it's pretty much their suffering life history that they're trying to fix or I should say put their life back together.)
Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart. Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart.
(The beating of his heart, meaning his feelings or emotions, his life.)
The gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds. But they haven’t seen the best of us yet.
(I feel like this part about the "gnashing teeth and the criminals tongues" are actually words that people say. Like hurtful words, putting someone down or making fun of that person to the extreme. But those bullies haven't seen the best of u, meaning what you're capable of.)
If you love me let me go
If you love me let me go.
‘Cause these words are knives that often leave scars. The fear of falling apart. And truth be told, I never was yours. The fear, the fear of falling apart
("Cause these words are knives that often leaves scars," again back to the other verse where I was explaining about the "gnashing teeth and the criminal tongues" meaning to be hurtful words to bring u down. They say sticks and stones can break my bones but word's can't hurt me, but in reality words are capable of killing a man's soul that can lead to suicide. "The fear of falling apart" this part pretty much means that he's scared of losing reality or himself and becomes crazy from all of these emotions that's inside of him. In the later verses it says "and truth be told, I was never yours," it's him speaking to God saying that he never belonged to God but instead he belongs to the Devil. But even if it is so, God still loves him very much, God kept hold of him not letting him go, and that's when he says "if u love me let me go," repeating that many of times.)
This is gospel for the vagabonds,
    Ne’er-do-wells, insufferable…
(This song is for the vagabonds or I should say wanderers, the fallens, to the ones who are truly hurt, hurt to the extreme.)
    Confessing their apostasies
    Led away by imperfect impostors.
(led away by they devil cause no one would care to listen to your testimonies, cause you're your own apostle to your own testimony.)
Don’t try to sleep through the end of the world.
(Everyone is delusional, being stuck in their own slumber, can't see reality. The end of the world is just around the corner, but everyone denies the truth and continues to sleep.)
Bury me alive, cause I won’t give up without a fight.
(Fighting to get away from reality no matter.)
Pretty much what I got from this song is that he can't take the pain and suffering anymore so he rather fall then keep on walking God's path. Bible scripture says that God's path is very difficult, it's narrow. Most people tried God's path but most of them doesn't make it. Why? Because it is hard walking God's path, people will persecute u, hate on u, and bully u, all because you're one of God's child or I should say walking his path. Those people fall because it's either they have stopped completely or they've turned back. So he spoke to God saying that if God truly loves him then God should just let go of him, or I should say his life. He probably couldn't take the suffering anymore so he killed himself, that's why u see him in the ER room. The doctors tried to revive him but failed to, he rather fall so there would be no more suffering from this world.
Connecting the rest to the other music video Emperors New Clothes, since God let him go that means he didn't make it. He believed that after ending his life there's gonna be no more suffering. Because in the other music video it shows him falling to Hell after expecting that he was gonna make it into Heaven. And in the other music video he was singing as the Devil trying to take God's throne, God's crown. The devil tries to make many fall, he takes advantage of the weak and weary meaning the ones who are suffering, which connects back to this video. At the end of the other video when u hear the screams of all the fallen souls that didn't make it to Heaven, the Devil was happy because one of his plans are successful.

      GacktSe7en
I honestly had an almost exact interpretation of the song. Also I feel like not only does "This is Gospel" tie into "Emperors New Clothes" (due to the music video) but also "Turn off the lights" in the first verse he sings "I got so sick of being in my own. Now the devil won't leave me alone." He was done walking the path alone due to the fact that it was becoming blurred/ harder to find your way "It's almost like I found a friend. Who's in it for the bitter end " He in turn met the devil (in one way or the other, wether it be literal or not) even though he didn't want to. The devil ended up becoming someone who was there all the time, "influencing him". Leading to "This is Gospel" and through that "Emperors New Clothes".
(I didn't want to explain my full interpretation of "Turn Off the Lights" bc it would have been too long but I feel as if you really only need those two verses. If you want I can give my full interpretation on "Turn Off the Lights" so that it makes a little more sense.)

Has anyone ever noticed that at the end of Say Amen video there's this tiny sound of a heart beat and then This Is Gospel starts exactly with thу same heart beat, and Brendon's wearing a white T-shirt in these both moments, so that's definitely a sequel, isn't it? so it's a trilogy then, ending with ENC.

I HAVENT EVEN FINISHED THE VIDEO BUT I KNOW I'LL LIKE IT, ANYWHO I WANT TO GIVE MY THOUGHTS BASED ON THE CHORUS AND HOOK-
The chorus and hook is in the perspective of Spencer.
"Lashing teeth and criminal tongues"- are monsters/demons telling Spencer to do the drugs.
"Conspire against the odds"- What the demons are saying is,'Conspire against your parents, dont follow their rules anymore since you're on your own.'
"But they havent seen the best of us yet"- Our fans dont know how good we used to be under our parent's roof.
(Hook 2) "But I wont give up without a fight"- I will fight through the urge of drug addiction, etc... (its pretty self explanatory)
"If you love me let me go"- Spencer telling his family to let him go and do what he wants
"Cause these words are knives and often leave scars"- Spencer saying that they restricted him and now he has 'scars' from the drug use.
"The fear of falling apart"- His parents are talking now, saying that they fear that Spencer will fall apart.
"Truth be told I never was yours"- Possibly talking to God and saying that he was never God's child, or talking to his parents again.
"This is the beat of my heart"- Possibly a final goodbye to his parents (or reunion), reminding him that this is the beat of his heart and no one else's.

To me it means being super depressed and wanting to end it. It’s such a good song… I love the lyric “if you love me let me go…” just reminds me of death. Also when I was in the hospital I could kind of tell who had struggled with drug addiction and it made me sad. I’m not religious at all for a reason. Thanks! Love that you described it perfectly. I love your videos, my interpretation is different of “the fear of falling apart”. As someone with anxiety, I often do things that make me feel more secure even if it’s not the best choice. I do them because they’ve helped me feel better before, so my brain tells me it must work. This could apply to Spencer’s addiction. Being under the influence may make his problems “go away” despite doing more harm than good. He only knows they make him feel better In the moment. He’s afraid of what will happen without them. Without his crutch he asks what could go wrong, he has to face the problems he avoids, what if the answers he seeks aren’t what he wants, what if confronting his demons destroys his life. For instance is you were to worry about bills, you ask what if I can’t pay them? What if I lose my home? What if, what if, what if,
. the addiction has always helped him overcome anxiety. The fear of falling apart is the unknown. With his addiction it helps him forget his problems, without the crutch, he’s fears his whole life will unravel and fall apart.

The 1st lyric I interpreted as being dead people almost like getting judged like in purgatory or somthing 'assembling they're philosophys from prices of broken memories' is like them making they're claim and in the 2nd verse it's like people getting judged and being led too hell and the video kinda supports this and the behind the scenes sort of...

That book is on the shelf! Can't remember what color it is? I'm not a huge fan of the book, but I have read the first two. Need to read the third one to figure out the message and understand it.

I haven't read it in about 10 years so I couldn't say much about it anymore. Not my favorite either I just own the same omnibus so it caught my eye. i much prefer Brandon Sanderson or Patrick Rothfuss.

Namuna B Here is my theory:
LA Devotee is how Hollywood stars are sucked in and brainwashed to be someone they're not. Both the lyrics and the music video point to this fact.

I always portrayed the “ if you love me let me go” as spencer asking the urges to do drugs to let him be and leave him alone because drug addicts often feel like the drugs are actually helping them and they can count on the drugs. So him asking the urges to leave him alone is him saying(to the urges) I think you love me, so let me stop. But because the drugs/urges are really against him, they don’t want what’s best for him and won’t “ let him go”

  • @azuthlu1587
    @azuthlu1587 6 ปีที่แล้ว

If I was to analyze those first lines I think I'd do it a bit differently... it sounds more to me like the 'permanent slumber' is suicide, and the assembly of philosophies from pieces of broken memories is the people they left behind trying to figure out what drove them to it, what was in their minds, but only having their memories of the person to do it - they can't ask them anymore so all that's left are their fragmented memories of who that person was.
I could be totally wrong, but that was my interpretation before I listened to yours... not sure how my interpretation would carry throughout the song tho

Also I’ve been cast out by the religious peoples halls. I was with a man who was toxic an elder at a church and felt something was very wrong and his pastor asked me which church I was going to go to next when I tried to speak up for myself. It’s so toxic. Branden is like the church I never knew and so is MGK and Eminem and even YungBlud. We all have our someone’s that have helped us! If anyone is struggling you are not alone and if you’re a hypocrite to like me don’t give up I’ve been that person who has been a total jerk to those who I feel are lesser then me until crap hit the fan. Just made me more humble. Don’t give up everyone ❤

Check out this interview with Brendon about this song. It gives great insight into the song and the situation.
th-cam.com/video/G4HxcXrbod8/w-d-xo.html From about 43 seconds to about 2:20 he talks about this song.
As you may know Spencer is doing great and got married and Brendon was his best man so their friendship survived and both Spencer and Brendon are finding happiness in their lives.

it's really sad how patd is falling apart from 4 members to only one man band... and the fact brendon still using the name patd and not his name really shows how much he wanna keep the legacy. I guess spencer is the only hope for brendon, I also thought they will be two of them until the end. but yeah things happened... he can't afford losing his band mates anymore :"(( pretty odd was phenomenal, it was unforgettable era. even brendon himself said that album has a special place in his heart

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s anti-Christian because Brendan is speaking against hypocrites, like you said in the video, the ones who condemn people of their sin, when they make the sins themselves. As a Christian, I can confirm that, that’s not who true Christians are. A true Christian is humble, and should stop trying to fix others mistakes and first start fixing yours.

I think the video is slightly different. I think it represents when loved ones are in a coma and can't wake up but their parents or other family members can't let them go even though they should because there's no way bring them back and the person in the coma has absolutely no control I'm just wanting to let me go because say there's nothing they can do and it represents the idea that surgeons are trying to give some surgery to try and fix them when actually you just need to let them go and surgeons who are holding him back represents the people people who won't let their love ones go and are trying to save someone who Can't be saved
