Newer, so M2. Extremely rare is the time that I'd prefer something older. The new G87 M2's design isn't perfect, but to me it's better than the older F87 M2 as well.
1M, one of the best M cars ever made. The feeling of the hydraulic steering is undoubtedly superior to any M2 that came after it. And it does not lack in power to the M2’s. Definitely won’t be repeated again.

I bought a 1M brand new in 2011 and only kept it for 3 years because I needed the money to buy my first house. Love having a roof over my head - but, regrets! I knew it would be special for a long time.
1M all the way. So unique looking but I understand, priorities. You'll get it back, just keep working hard. You might pay more than double than what you sold it for but if you miss her that much go for it. The prices are wild but it's a special car.

When the 1M came out they compared it to an e46. The M2 is now bigger in every dimension and heavier - even than my e46 convertible. I'm not under any illusions that the more equipment a car is expected to come with, but you come to a point where you're just throwing stuff in there
Bought my 1M new in 2011 and it’s still a riot. I still remember the last instructions my SA gave me. “Don’t ever turn the DSC off unless you want to die.” I’ve test driven every iteration of the M2 and they just don’t recapture that rare 1M magic.
The 1M is good looking, handsome even, and muscular like a bull dog, but not jaw dropping like a 70's era BMW 3.0CSi. Few cars are. I get that Car Magazine has to make money but stop spreading BMW marketing propaganda. The new M2 is hideous. Don't mock your audience.
The N54 was available it lots of other cars too, including the 135i. That was the thing that upset the purists, the turbocharged engine and lacking the S designation was sacrilege at the time. I’ve always loved the 1M, they look so perfect. The skunk worse nature adds to the story. The new M2 is hideous. Massively quick, very good to drive by all accounts but it’s a big, fat, heavy munter.
You forgot to mention the E92 / 90 M3 Servotronic Hydraulic Steering was also used for the 1M.............which is great. Planted, accurate & communicative.
Classic BMW I6 long hood short deck in 1 of the last 3 box coupes, BMW design this century has doubled their volume in new segments while separating drivers from trolls (2+ million annually of former, 20X that of latter, both record #s). 1M was accused of being "parts bin special", good parts evidently because it's been appreciating since new. You'll miss monstrosity once it's gone, last & smallest stickshift turbo I6 M. I miss the good old days, when design was subjective & not determined on the internet by haters will never be able to drive, own or afford this or any other BMW.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I always thought the 1M deserved the S54. That being said, even as is, 1M all the way over whatever the heck that newer thing is.
Z4MR/C is up there with the best M cars, a fantastic engine s54 and the running gear from the csl and that paired to an LSD and awesome sound makes for a great drive.
The M2 is fine enough :) but in this case 1M for the win ❤️ It looks better, it's more mechanical and engaging, and it's more reasonably powered :) BUT! If BMW made the new M2 good looking and got rid of the stewpid iDrive 8 and all of the other complicated infotainment things, we could just say "Oh, the M2 is a great update of the 1M concept for this era of digitalization :)"
But, But, BUT THAT'S THE N54 ENGINE IN THAT LITTLE BEGGAR!! I thought the N54 blew up as soon as you even LOOKED at it! I thought it was THE WORST ENGINE ever produced by BMW?? I thought it was nothing but HEADACHES and HE11 !! LOL. Well that's what many youtubers and internet people say or have said. Including Tyler Hoover who even said it was the "Worst engine from BMW in the TITLE of his video! Mind you then he went out on the track and the only troubles he had was the boost intake hose blew off once then proceeded to try to break it on track but only had a good time so he hated it.
It’s a very personal preference. I test drove a ZF G87 and I found the gearbox weird. Actually it feels like the engine/flywheel has too much inertia. So in S3 the wot upshifts are very good but everything else has this jerkiness, like a noob manual driver. S1-2 are smoother but I don’t want slow shifts in a sports car. While I do prefer manuals, I’ve driven an Alpine and a 992 PDK and both boxes were great. I didn’t feel that they detracted from the experience. Even a 520d with a ZF didn’t bother me, but somehow the G87 did. Just went out and tested a manual G82 this weekend and the car suddenly felt a lot less digital than the G87 Auto. Everything was business as usual

To be fair the 1M sitting by the M2 on the cover picture makes the new m2 look outdated. The m2 looks like bmw dedigners got lazy and copied a scion xb and made it into a car.

I am a serial BMW owner, love them, and still own one (M140i). I should love the 1M, but I never did, even when it was new, and still don't. The 1M is not 'one of the greatest M cars' and I place it way down the list. It's ugly. It's too short, has a very ugly front end, the amount of bodywork above the rear arches looks horrible. The lights are so ugly too, and it isn't a great handling car at all, even Chris Harris struggled to keep it in a straight line, and none of us have his driving talent. It's just a parts bin special. The only good thing was hydraulic steering. It's simply a dumpy looking thing, too tall, too short, and not really designed properly from start to finish like a real M car should be. The new M2 isn't the best looking car, but it's MUCH nice than the 1M. The M2C of the last gen was basically perfect. Enough power, coupled with beautiful and perfectly proportioned bodywork, playful but controllable fun handling, and reliable.

I share the same opinion...test drove the 1M for a full day, then test drove the F87 M2 for half a day. After driving the F87 M2 for 15min I knew it was more my kind of car and ordered one instead of buying a used 1M which was not 100% my taste (in driving and styling).

Actual ownership experience living with it every day is very different than a short TH-cam Review.. you'd be crazy to not take this M2 over the 1M. The M2 engine is one of the most reliable BMW has ever made alongside the B58, in its entire automotive production history so far. My daily car is a 1M since 8years - 160.000km, no prob. love this legendary car. each new M2 is compared to the 1M and it's always the same result, bmw failed to make a car wich give emotion and seems to be trying to kill the driver like on the 1M ^_^
I can’t be the only one who likes the style of the new m2 more than the m1 or old m2? I think they look like eggs on wheels compared to the new m2. 🥚 To the point the m1 and m2 weren’t even on my radar till the new m2 dropped. In fact, my 2024 m2 will be delivered late this year just in time for the holidays.

No. The 1M is N54 powered. N54 is twin turbo. N55 is single twin scroll turbo, which bmw calls twin entry.

The M2 (and other current BMW offerings) is so hideous it doesn’t matter to me how well it drives. I’d take the 1M for that reason alone.

To the point the m1 and m2 weren’t even on my radar till the new m2 dropped. In fact, my 2024 m2 will be delivered late this year just in time for the holidays.
