  • The latest WRAL Doc, Crisis Next Door, shows how fentanyl has destroyed the lives of thousands of North Carolinians, what the state is doing to fight this epidemic and what more is needed to save lives.
North Carolina is in the grip of a drug overdose epidemic, with fentanyl being the primary culprit. The new WRAL Documentary, Crisis Next Door, focuses on fentanyl’s impact.
More than 4,000 people in North Carolina died from drug overdoses in 2021, the most substance abuse related deaths ever recorded in the state. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), 77% of those deaths involved fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid. When manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and approved by the FDA, it can be safely used to treat patients in severe pain. The synthetic fentanyl leading to many overdose deaths is made in unregulated labs, pushed by drug cartels, and put in various drugs as a cheap way to produce extremely strong substances.
“It's in every substance out there. It's in marijuana, it's in methamphetamine, it's in cocaine,” said Dr. Carrie Brown with the NCDHHS.
Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin. This means a very small amount, as little as 2 milligrams, could be a potentially lethal dose.
“We are in the deadliest moment of the deadliest drug epidemic in American history,” said North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein.
Confusion surrounding what fentanyl is and how it is killing people has led to a lack of empathy surrounding this crisis.
“You'd be hard pressed to find a family in the United States that hasn't, at some level, been impacted when you're talking about the numbers that we're talking about,” said Dr. Brown.

Fentanyl addiction actually destroyed my life for over 4 years. Also suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 2 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

Amen God bless people. Save your health save your mind. Life is better without heroin, fentanyl, alcohol and cigarettes. And you have more money in your pocket. God bless everyone who has rejected the devils intentions to be addicted to alcohol and cigarettes etc which can cause so much damage to health.

100% agree I used to have Psychosis and paranoid thoughts like "people thinking about me talking about me etc. Very odd behavior after getting off Adderall from 7-16. Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. Wont ever need to do it again because I'm happy and contempt forever, but I wish more people did this to alter their perception of reality. Would help with healing much trauma

It is scary that when I went to highschool there were a few kids that'd get heroin from downtown Chicago and kept it pretty hush hush. but these new blue fentanyl pills make heroin look like Tylenol or aspirin and are so small they can hide anywhere. If someone is used to taking vicodin or slightly stronger percocette, they could think the fentanyl pills are oxycodone like the stamp says it is. But from experience 1 blue fent pill is probably about 10 times the strength of a real 30mg oxycodone. So right off the bat people who are getting a new source need to break a pill into 8 pieces no joke, bc you never know. Real oxy is a luxury to come by these days for certain, so if you meet a dealer saying the have opiates, they are 90% likely to have counterfeit fentanyl pills.

Americans, especially the religious ones, are so judgmental and quick to punch down. Addicts often receive that punch. What you are witnessing is the biproduct of the de-industrialization of America. It's been going on for decades. .........................................................................................................................................
Almost all of the union jobs that required no postsecondary education have been shipped overseas. I can't believe that American's are actually proud of "The Rustbelt". Large cities that are decayed from abandonment. These poor people are coping with pain in the cheapest way they can, by numbing themselves. .......................................................................................................................................
The richest country in the world? On paper only. ................................................................................................................................................
I'm so sad for your loss. Please use whatever emotion you have to show love. America needs a movement involving everyone who has suffered such tragedy and loss.

I’ve recently came home from rehab for opioid addiction. I just want people to know that in most cases, addiction comes from unhealed childhood trauma. You can go to rehab 100 times…but until you address and heal from your trauma, you’ll probably be right back to substance abuse. I can’t stress enough how important therapy is. Of course it sucks that this drug exists. We can arrest all the dealers and people will still find a way to get pills. What we really need to focus on is why people struggle with addiction in the first place. A lot of focus should be placed on mental health, this is the reason for addiction. We need to address reasons for addiction.

I agree with you and also feel like we need to teach our children how to be good parents and maybe, parenting classes in school? We can't give our children everything they ask for and we can't beat our children for every little thing because all we are doing is raising dysfunctional parents to be. I'm 57 years old, I was molested, physically abused and mentally abused and have struggled with drug addiction. I've been clean now for over 20 years but only because I got therapy. I was able to get to the core of why I was using so I agree with you totally on the need for therapy. I really do feel like parenting classes as early as jr. High isn't inappropriate. Give our children the tools to deal with crying babies, deal with being a single parent, teach our children that abuse is not acceptable by anyone in any form. Kids are so much smarter than I was, say at nine or ten. I wasn't caring about looking good for the boys the way they are now. I think parents have a responsibility to teach their children how to be a good parent but first they need to be taught how to be a good parent. I hope I'm making sense.

Out of the sadness of all the stories their friendship & to work together to try & help for better melted my heart. To me that shows the wife & her husband weren't bad people & had genuine feelings of sorrow, regret & remorse. The mother showed that she knew her son did have issues, not that he deserved to die but wasn't a mum that looked past her son's issues like other parents do. The mum had forgiveness as she knew her son wasn't perfect & chose a bad path in life before he had time to fix it. It also, in a very sombre way brought two strangers together from opposite sides of the courtroom to form a beautiful friendship to try & do good in this world as two ladies on opposing sides yet came together to be on one side. They're both beautiful & loving, caring & supportive women that both can stand hand in hand to tell their stories from both sides but united as one & if they can save one life then that's worth it

One of the few documentaries that establishes right off the bat, the huge difference between prescription fentanyl and the illicit fentanyl being produced.
Being in the healthcare industry for over 20 years, I know several people with severe chronic pain, who wouldn’t be able to function without prescribed fentanyl transdermal patches, as ingested painkillers were causing them severe digestive issues?
In a controlled environment, they’re now able to now maintain a quality of life, that otherwise wasn’t present before using the patch(in which ALL used ones have to be accounted for before refill).
Most doctors, politicians and anti prescription drug advocates, tend to blur that line between FDA approved fentanyl, and the Chinese basement manufactured fentanyl, which is what’s killing all these people.

Street sellers and drug companies are all capitalists I suppose.
Plus, no shade, but this is a very sympathetic presentation of these families. Very different language and presentation from earlier drug epidemics.

Addiction is a global phenomenon but in some places it has shaped into this out of control situation. I can’t believe it’s just a result of overprescription of opioids. There must be something societal that is fundamentally out of order for people to want to anaesthetise their existence.

Normalization of drug use, societal denial of the damage it does... and I think the disconnected infrastructure in US makes in worse. Kids going to college are days travel away from their support network (and common sense). Colleges/universities in US are at this point well known for harmful cultures (frats, hazing, rape, drugs, parties are a requirement...) not to mention how expensive it is to live in some places, which makes it harder to pull yourself out.

You can rise above anything. U did im so proud of you.
Sure parents are imperfect like us. Maybe we got raised by some who didn't care about us. Or they drank as a way to escape their pain. But we don't have to copy their course.
We can break free. My parents and bro are dead. Only one left is my heroin addict bro. He wasting away and been in 20 plus rehabs in 40 years! A walking skeleton.
For my own sanity I don't associate with him. He even hid drugs in my home! I found it threw it in the toilet. Came by next day sweating g like a pig. He never would tell me what he wanted and I'm not going to ever let him shoot up in my house!
Mom didn't help when she was alive. She found bent spoons and asked me. I said he's an addict wake up mom! She slapped me in the face and said no he is not.
When u have that disfunction in the family its beyond horrible. Anyway thats no excuse for me to over eat but that was my coping mechanism. But now after 20 years I'm finally healthy. Somewhat. All the stress made me have some health prob but I'm managing.
All I'm saying is just keep doing great despite yoyr upbringing. We all have horror stories. When I finally lost weight and got my bro out of my life I feel great. I really do. I love him but I can't anymore for my own mental health.

They give you medicine for the first 4 days. Then I didn’t take anymore meds because I didn’t want to be on anything anymore. The body is resilient. Everyday is better than the last. But somehow he woke up from that nightmare. Step by step, he paid his debt, gained back people's trust and now he has 2 sons and a lovely wife and a few real estates. Decades ago, AARP had an article about aging alcoholics. Why not? You've been abusing alcohol for years, not going to stop in your cranky old age. I'm very old, so can say it: they're a huge danger behind the wheel of a car. No, thanks for the offer of a lift, I'll take a cab.

The Opioid money didn't hurt drug companies. They have endless money supply. It wasn't and still isn't enough to simply fine them and try to use the money to fix the problem. The people who were in charge at the time need to go to prison and the companies involved need to be shut down completely.

    • @Hollyferris
      @Hollyferris ปีที่แล้ว +2

It can be traced back further than that. It was the reckless supply of ‘legal’ oxy. Then when you take that supply away people will access illicit supply. Then when you take that away…

Traveling every year to Europe, and you don't see Europe's youth dying from drugs and hooked on drugs as many Americans. There is something more going on here, because my significant is European and they don't have these issues in Europe with drugs like we do here, including drugs for antidepressants. Something is fundamentally wrong in our country period.

Thanks so much for this program. It was very heart felt to see these parents talk about their children that were so young to be trapped into drug addiction, and using a drug they knew nothing about. I remember the crack revaluation and the pain and death it released on many communities particularly in the inner cities of this nation. Many lives were lost many homes broken and many people went to jail. Seeing these parents who did not have a clue what these kids were up to was very heart breaking to say the least. America where are you. Drug addiction gun violence ,child pornography, and just outright chaous. A nation that has lost true values ,has lost its soul. The Eternal Great GOD gaves this nation and its peoples the best of the earths land water ways. Fields of plenty, and what have we done with it. People can you not see return to true values and the way of the one true GOD and we will not be in mourning over the loss of our young people. Peace be with you!
