Dorothy's slippers in the book were silver, so they didnt have skirt around the color of her slippers. in the MGM Wizard of Oz they were Ruby because color was still a fairly new thing in cinema so they wanted to capitalize on this.
My thoughts: Wicked is such a brilliant musical (and book) that it has worked in the moments of when Dorothy and the gang are supposed to be here and there so well done on stage, that I think in the movie they are able to expand upon them. We forget when we watch a musical, we think the scenes that are happening are instant, but really there can be moments, days, months to years passing in between scenes, like between act 1 and 2 is atleast 5-10 years? if not more. The moment after As Long As You're Mine is when we see the yellow brick road and it insinuates the fact Dorothy just landed and she was led off to the Emerald city, that scene in the original movie is atleast 15 mins long, and then after the March of the Witch Hunters, we see Dorothy is kidnapped, thats so much time in between when we see the Tin Man and the Lion protesting to them being backups for Dorothy, like atleast a couple days! Needless to say, I think there are moments like that that are gonna be expanded and we'll be able to a tally comprehend the timeline of Glinda and Elphaba having their thing while Dorothy and the gang meet and all. Another point, I actually don't mind that the battle cry is in the trailer, a lot of people were upset cause its one of the most iconic, if not the most iconic riff in musical theatre. But, I will say arguably, No Good Deed is a harder song to sing and act than Defying Gravity. DG has its moments by NDG is just sung through without stops or dialogue, and Elphaba is so hurt and angry from everything that has f*cked her over that it is, again arguably, THE climax of the musical, where we see Elphaba really be "Wicked". Yes Defying Gravity has its plot point to convey too but, No Good Deed has a whole bunch of things to accomplish in the 3 minutes it is.
Fun fact the slippers have always been silver, the only reason the shoes were made into ruby was because the silver color didn’t “pop” in the original and they were going for the “color” factor back in those days.
He’d be so so good, like I’d love that, but he’s been working on other stuff fairly consistently, and hasn’t really made mention of anything he had to nip away/take a break for
I love the fact that we’re actually able to see the sorceress seminar that’s mentioned in the musical, but not really Shown..I love that extra layer that they added. I cannot wait man!!!
10:41 I think it could be Glindas coronation that is briefly mentioned by Madame Morrible in Thank goodness when she sings “…when you bowed before his thrown he (The Wizard) decreed you’d hence be known as Glinda the Good officially”
1:42 you forgot the 2013 movie Oz The Great And Powerful, although I’m not deep into Oz lore so maybe that’s a different thing (I’m not saying it’s a GOOD movie, just one that takes place in Oz)
If I’m not mistaken, Dorothy’s shoes are actually silver in the book. So, they’re also being true to the original source material. Love watching how excited y’all are!
ShenShen was on the right side of the screen behind Galinda when they were commenting on the character, not the left. IMDB credits Bronwyn James for ShenShen; Bowen Yang is credited as Pfannee.
the silver slippers are also accurate to the Wizard of Oz book. also, I think the wedding scene might be a dream sequence when Elphaba sings I'm not that girl.
Has anyone thought maybe the "riff" at the end of the trailer is just a "maybe" riff? Think for a minute...do you really think they only had her record just ONE riff?? I'm sure she did multiple and different ways! It's possible that this was the TEST to see how people responded to it only to put in another record of her riff at the end of defying gravity? Thoughts?
I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering where Dr. Dillamond is. He quite literally is the catalyst for soooooooo many plot points within the book/musical.
I think the two main reasons he’s not shown in the teaser are it’s a spoiler for a cameo (very likely Idina) and also CGI will take longer to create and perfect, so putting out a teaser now they probably won’t have finalised the CGI yet
@@la.uraloxYes! And knowing how much backlash films get from bad CGI characters they probably want to make sure it looks perfect before they reveal anything
@@ferosha99 exactly! They can show the cgi locations as they’ve been able to work on them before/during filming, but they have to use an actor to create the movements and a separate one for voice acting to then cgi the character so I’m assuming they’re still working on that
Concerning Dr. Dillamond, Bowen Yang confirmed that the character is in the films. However, he stated that it was a female puppeteer standing in as a voice had not been cast yet. So Idina or Kristin being a cameo voice is very plausible.
I don't think the general public understands how excited I (and most theater kids of the world) am for these movies. I think I might die if I don't see this as soon as it comes out 😆😆😆
i think dorothy is going to be a huge plot point for the second movie because for the marketing they've been leaning towards "there's been so much before dorothy landed in oz" & "You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road?"
The fact that, before watching this video I didn’t really know what wicked was other than a musical, and I didn’t really care to know more, and now I’m so pumped and hype and feel the need to get filled in on everything I don’t know, just proves the power of the Sam and Ryan channel 😂 I watched the video because I love them, not because I cared about the movie, and now I love them AND want to see the movie 😂
I wonder if the clip of Dorothy and the Gang is part of the opening to the musical since the musical starts when the Wicked Witch has been killed. Kind of like a set up for those who don’t know the story as well?
I was so happy when I saw this was on my home page. I was patiently waiting for a Sam & Ryan reaction. I'm so excited. I really want to see Wicked on stage before I see the movie. I probably sound like a fake fan not seeing it already, but I fell in love with Defying Gravity and I've been trying to see it on stage, but life keeps happening and preventing me from seeing it. I'm reserving myself to have a reaction to the battle cry until I see the movie, because I know it's going to be amazing.
I think the reason the shoes are silver is because they were in the book and when they were brought to screen originally they need to be more of a pop when everything became colorful
I think if James Corden was going to play Dr. Dillamond, they wouldn't be waiting so suspiciously long to announce his casting. But if they gender-bent him and cast Idina or Kristin, that would be more worth this silence because it's a more shocking reveal. I'm staying optimistic that the long wait means it's someone really good.
I'm OBSESSED with Wicked and have been since 2013 and have seen it so many times. Excited is an understatement. The visuals are incredible from what I've seen of the trailer and the costumes are a perfect blend of screen and theatre. Only thing I'm nervous about is that almost every line they have shown in the teaser are NOT lines from the show. They have similarities but the words have changed enough for me to wonder that if in the trailer most words are changed, how much of the script will be changed in the whole movie? Wicked is iconic and the reason its been on broadyway and west end without changes to the script is because it is so well written so I'm excited but nervous to see the changes
when i saw the trailer during the super bowl i jumped 10 feet off my couch and i looked insane my family was so confused because they hate theatre!!! 😛😛
i haven’t read all the comments so it’s probably mentioned , but shows were silver in books too. i read them . all in second and third grade. love this channel
Hey y’all! Two Oz nerds here and we love this! 👋❤👋quick add: Oz has had more cinematic realizations since THE WIZ in 1978 including Disney’s sequel and prequel RETURN TO OZ- ‘80s fantasy kindertrauma- and the 2013 OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL- disowned by most Oz fans 🤣🤣. But this is the first film since MGM that feels like it will have that Oz lasting power. Can’t wait!!!
I'll be interested to find out who Miss Coddle is because Keala Settle is gonna kill it in that role... I'm now glad we had to wait so long, it was cause we were waiting for Jon M. Chu's cinematic eye... Because Y 'all this is stunning.....
Don’t forget, wicked was a MASSIVE. Book before it was the musical, the musical had to condense so much that it missed the way that the book worked in and re skinned parts of the wizard of oz in a way that dodged any copyrights of the time, hence the silver slippers and ect. Which is why I think we’re gonna be able to see so much more of that part if the story, so long as they pull all of their “wizzard of oz” plot points from the wicked book adaptation, possibly bypassing/finding a loophole to the very strict copyright from the original wizard of oz
Hot Take: “Thank Goodness” is boring and too long in my opinion 14:04 it could be referring to the original silver slippers that Dorthy wears in the book series as well. As Ryan pointed out there is some copy write issues regarding the 1939 film starring Judy Garland as the Ruby slippers are not in the public domain (this color change was actually a design choice because color was fairly new to film and Technicolor/MGM Studios wanted a color that would pop) so in order to get around it in productions like The Wiz and Wicked they reverted back to Silver
Boq sings "and that ball that's being staged, announcing Glinda is engaged to Fiyero" and then the little Glinda Fiyero dance sequence transition Ryan was mentioning follows that scene, it symbolises the official engagement party, not a wedding.
It was pretty much the same situation for me😂. The tv was playing the Super Bowl, and I walked in right when it started playing😂 pretty lucky if you ask me because I love theater❤
It is cool that we finally get a world to Wicked, because the stage show is designed to look like the inside of the Time Dragon Clock, with puppets reenacting the events like in the book. The movie dropped that because it doesn’t work as well without the dragon structure looming overhead, so they’re forced to make it into a more literal world.
The shoes in the book were silver and the color of the shoes for the movie were changed to Ruby because they were made more of an impact in color on the screen.
Ooh! I don't know when y'all changed your profile pic, but I like the rebrand. Comments as I watch this vid: - I ALSO loved those glasses. - I'm a little worried with how dark the ballroom looks on screen. - Maybe the "wedding" is in Galinda's mind. - I wonder if part one will end with Dorothy arriving or if we're getting clips from BOTH movies. - Paying homage to the musical and thus the Wizard of Oz book. - Great point Ryan. It's like what they did with DUNE a bit. We got a world-building trailer not a movie trailer. - Also, using Dorothy grabs the attention of people who have NO IDEA what Wicked is, especially during a football game. - "...who can sing AND act." I understand what you mean, Sam. I understand. - *sprays Ryan with a water bottle* No, Ryan! Bad, Ryan! Don't say things like that. I REALLY hope some of the other commentors are right and it's a legacy actor as Dr. Dillamond. (Crosses fingers for Katie Rose Clark as Dillamond 😆) - We should keep that in mind. This is a world-building trailer for the hoi polloi and not the musical and theater nerds. It mainly showcased 1) the world, 2) the two leads, 3) two A-list actors as iconic roles, and 4) elements people would quickly recognize in less than a minute. Marketing was smart with the expensively short time they had.
I think the wedding is on Elphaba's mind! She's imagining what will happen in I'm Not That Girl... I also think that Idina will be Dr Dillamond as she hinted it on social medias!
I suspect Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz teasers are intended to draw in people who aren't familiar with the musical or the Wicked book. It's very possible that Dorothy won't be a big part of the movie, but she's a draw for moviegoers who wouldn't otherwise take an interest in seeing this film. It's entirely possible that what's in the teaser is actually most of the Dorothy/Wizard of Oz scenes.
Also, adding onto the shoe combo in the original story of Wizard of Oz, the shoes weren’t even ruby red there the movie Wizard of Oz had to change them for copyright reasons. I don’t remember if they were also silver in the original story but just funny of the copyright on copyright that happens with this whole franchise
"Fun fact" (kinda): Hamburg, Germany, put on an original production w/ a different world building style, costumes, effects, character & stage designs, musical changes etc. In this show, you fully see Dorothy once by herself after she arrives & together w/ the Tinman, Lion & Scarecrow at least two times. Actually, during "Elphaba's death" scene, they're all there. No curtain, Elphaba threatens the Scarecrow with fire, Dorothy dumps the bucket on her & she fastly "melts away" through a trap door w/ green lights, lots of smoke & a scream right on stage. The others yell happily & leave. Fiyero "plays" his friendly Scarecrow part until the wizard leaves on command by Glinda & then gets to Elphi in her hiding place to leave Oz together. I don't know how they treat the rights in non-Broadway productions, but the story of "The Wizard of Oz" is public domain & as long you dont't include obvious elements of the 1939 movie (like ruby slippers, "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore", songs etc.), using those book characters should be legal & in fair use for whatever you want. Want a Glinda in Game of Thrones? There she is... getting murdered. So I guess to involve those characters w/out references to the Judy Garland film, falls under "fair use of public domain" & is therefore allowed.* (*Just my personal take away. I'm not a lawyer nor a legal advisor.) I watched the show in Hamburg twice & it was very cool to see Dorothy and the gang on stage w/ a few lines, as well as Elphaba melting without a curtain. She also flies on her broom over the audience at the end of Defying Gravity in this particular production. Very sad that Covid took away most of their run time. :(

Dorothy's slippers in the book were silver, so they didnt have skirt around the color of her slippers. in the MGM Wizard of Oz they were Ruby because color was still a fairly new thing in cinema so they wanted to capitalize on this.
My thoughts:
Wicked is such a brilliant musical (and book) that it has worked in the moments of when Dorothy and the gang are supposed to be here and there so well done on stage, that I think in the movie they are able to expand upon them.
Yes Defying Gravity has its plot point to convey too but, No Good Deed has a whole bunch of things to accomplish in the 3 minutes it is.
all of this to say im really excited for the movie and I will go see it alone if I have to 😅😅
All I'm gonna say is "That ball that's being staged, announcing Glinda is engaged"
TOOOO FIYEROOOOO
FIYEROOOOOOOOO
I was soooo excited when the trailer dropped. my theatre groupchat went wild for the first time in like a month lol
22:10 Here to say, the casting for Dr. Dillamond is hilarious! After all of this, gagged! 😂
Fun fact the slippers have always been silver, the only reason the shoes were made into ruby was because the silver color didn’t “pop” in the original and they were going for the “color” factor back in those days.
“The last time we saw Oz was The Wiz in 1978”
The Great and Powerful Oz (2013): am I a joke to you?
Honestly yes, it is a joke to pretty much everyone
22:51 maybe its Norbert Leo Butz?! that would be cool. that would be a good surprise
He’d be so so good, like I’d love that, but he’s been working on other stuff fairly consistently, and hasn’t really made mention of anything he had to nip away/take a break for
Ok first thing… this first look made me defy gravity and second thing… thank you Ryan for your passion at the end 😂💖💚🫧
I think the wedding scene is happening in Elphaba's mind during "I'm Not That Girl."
love this theory!
I love the fact that we’re actually able to see the sorceress seminar that’s mentioned in the musical, but not really Shown..I love that extra layer that they added. I cannot wait man!!!
In the Wizard of Oz book the shoes are silver
10:41 I think it could be Glindas coronation that is briefly mentioned by Madame Morrible in Thank goodness when she sings “…when you bowed before his thrown he (The Wizard) decreed you’d hence be known as Glinda the Good officially”
1:42 you forgot the 2013 movie Oz The Great And Powerful, although I’m not deep into Oz lore so maybe that’s a different thing (I’m not saying it’s a GOOD movie, just one that takes place in Oz)
Oh saw that movie when came out, not that good of a movie, but it was a movie about how the Wizard got to Oz.
I also saw that movie but if you asked me what happened in it I wouldn't be able to tell you. I also can't remember who's in it lol
I knew tht was a thing
I was thinking that, too 😅
That movie is best forgotten 😆
If I’m not mistaken, Dorothy’s shoes are actually silver in the book. So, they’re also being true to the original source material. Love watching how excited y’all are!
love yalls 😂 also we love your singing in the intro Ryan !!!!
Thoughts?
Thank you both for blessing us with your knowledge and opinions on this movie!! This project is really going to be life changing!
They can show the cgi locations as they’ve been able to work on them before/during filming, but they have to use an actor to create the movements and a separate one for voice acting to then cgi the character so I’m assuming they’re still working on that
who is playing fiyero and why isn’t it ryan
real
If it’s James Cordon, we riot. Elphaba wouldn’t stand for this so we shouldn’t either.
I think I might die if I don't see this as soon as it comes out 😆😆😆
The shoes are silver in the wizard of oz books. They were red for the movie to show off the technicolor on the screen.
I was waiting for your alls reaction to this out of everyone!!! I’m beyond excited for this film!!!
i think dorothy is going to be a huge plot point for the second movie because for the marketing they've been leaning towards "there's been so much before dorothy landed in oz" & "You weren’t told the whole story.
IM SO EXITED FOR THE MOVIE!
I wonder if the clip of Dorothy and the Gang is part of the opening to the musical since the musical starts when the Wicked Witch has been killed. Kind of like a set up for those who don’t know the story as well?
Well in the book Figero died
Cynthia’s voice is powerful af 😮❤
This movie looks FREAKING AWSOME. 🥳🤩🥳
Also, I’m auditioning for JD in Heathers. Any tips, Ryan?
Yay! Good luck! I’m no bway performer, I can’t sing, dance or act, but my tip would be to do well😂
@ellie6475 Thats a great tip
@@Haley_777.14 thanks lmao
when i saw the trailer during the super bowl i jumped 10 feet off my couch and i looked insane my family was so confused because they hate theatre!!! 😛😛
I'm so so SO excited after seeing this trailer! It looks amazing
i haven’t read all the comments so it’s probably mentioned , but shows were silver in books too. i read them . all in second and third grade. love this channel
Loved this trailer. It looks very cool and the production value here is just stellar.
did you guys notice that on Dorothy’s silver shoes, the patterns on it look like rainbows 🌈, and the heels are reminiscent of tornadoes/twisters?🌪️
I’m surprised there is no casting announcement or clips in the teaser of dr dilamond
I was lucky enough to see Ryan as Fiyero and have that 15th Anniversary book 😊
Everybody wake up!!! The queen and king have posted!!!🥳🥳🙌🎉
IM SORRY BUT I CANNOT WATCH ETHAN SLATER PLAYING BOQ WITHOUT THINKING OF “nO iM nOt a SimPLe sPoNgEE”
Y'all should come see Heathers in Rochester, Minnesota! April 19th-May 5th at the Rochester Repertory Theatre😉
ANDY FICKMAN CAME TO OUR OPENING NIGHT!!!!!
Bowen is playing a character named Fanny. He talks about it on his podcast. So excited for this!
I love how people just forget about/don’t acknowledge oz the great and powerful movie
Hot Take: “Thank Goodness” is boring and too long in my opinion
14:04 it could be referring to the original silver slippers that Dorthy wears in the book series as well.
It’s a fabulous day for us Daddies, a Wicked trailer and our parents posted💚
If Corden is Dillimond, I'm walking outta the theatre 😒. Btw, am I the only that thinks Idina is gonna make a cameo as Melina (Elphaba's Mother)!?🤔
Finally!! I've been going back to see if you guys have posted a video about this!
FINALLY!!! I have been waiting for this since the trailer dropped!!!
HAIR IS HAIRING!
The shoes are also silver in the original book illustrations of Wizard of Oz, so they’re matching that too
It is cool that we finally get a world to Wicked, because the stage show is designed to look like the inside of the Time Dragon Clock, with puppets reenacting the events like in the book. The movie dropped that because it doesn’t work as well without the dragon structure looming overhead, so they’re forced to make it into a more literal world.
8:41 yes! I had the same thought! I love that scene 💕
The shoes in the book were silver and the color of the shoes for the movie were changed to Ruby because they were made more of an impact in color on the screen.
Ooh! I don't know when y'all changed your profile pic, but I like the rebrand.
Comments as I watch this vid:
- I ALSO loved those glasses.
Dillamond. (Crosses fingers for Katie Rose Clark as Dillamond 😆)
- We should keep that in mind.
I also think that Idina will be Dr Dillamond as she hinted it on social medias!
why isnt anyone talking about the lack of ryan in the movie..
no comments on Ari as Glinda.. Btw, movie seems just magical. Can't wait till official trailer.
I LOVE YOU BOTH SM❤❤
HELLO MOTHER AND FATHER 😭😭😭❤️❤️
8:37 SAME! I loved that wedding scene in Crazy Rich Asians 😍
LMFAO Ryan’s rant on James is my favorite thing😂😂
Also, adding onto the shoe combo in the original story of Wizard of Oz, the shoes weren’t even ruby red there the movie Wizard of Oz had to change them for copyright reasons. I don’t remember if they were also silver in the original story but just funny of the copyright on copyright that happens with this whole franchise
Them: That will be like 6-7 hours…
Me: EXCUSE ME WHAT?!
Dude…. What.
I'm not a lawyer nor a legal advisor.)
I watched the show in Hamburg twice & it was very cool to see Dorothy and the gang on stage w/ a few lines, as well as Elphaba melting without a curtain. She also flies on her broom over the audience at the end of Defying Gravity in this particular production. Very sad that Covid took away most of their run time. :(
