I will never understand why someone would comment with that. It's a reaction, so it's expected that you would pause and give your comments throughout. If people want to watch it uninterrupted, they should just watch the trailer lol.
I respect how Chu has managed to pay tribute to the show, the book, the original book and the original film. There’s pieces of all four and they all seem to go together.

Yeah John Chu already said that Defying Gravity was one of the main reasons they decided to split it into two movies. It was very hard for them to directly follow that song up with the rest of the story without some sort of break.

That is exactly what they’re doing. Because putting a ‘part one’ in will detract some people who don’t know it’s a musical in two parts from seeing the first movie.
I would be so happy if they do that! it being in parts would be amazing and also make sense since it is a movie based on the wicked musical that has acts like all musicals do.

To me this could be the first Movie Musical to either Hit 1B or Come pretty close. This will be the Highest Grossing Movie Musical of all time. It will be Nominated for 10-13 Oscars. I'm calling it now.

I’m sure it will make a ton of money, but aside from production design, hair and makeup and a few other technical awards it’s not going to be nominated in any of the big Oscar categories.

Lately, people have talked smack about movie musicals and production tried to hide it at first.
I feel this and Speilbirg’s West Side Story brought respect to them again.
The money thing, yeah, maybe. But oscar? It’s not that I don’t think the movie will be good, but you just have to know what the oscar voting body favor and it is not movies like wicked.
Honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if a brief glimpse of Dorothy was the last thing the first movie ends on.
there’s a popular theory that part 1 will actually start with the fab 4 getting their mission to melt the witch and we’re gonna see the hat on the floor with the steam and that’s how we’re gonna go into nomtw (i doubt they’ll show the actual bucket of water being thrown, but just a glimpse)

The opening reference absolutely works! Long before 2012 I knew a movie was inevitable, and I'm so excited it's finally almost here! Great insights on Elphaba's realization about the Wizard and the effigy burning. I'm happy they're using the movie-style bubble, too - I never thought the mechanical bubble of the stage show was meant to be literal (though I could be wrong). And Cynthia and Ariana's harmony on "With you and I defying gravity" keeps giving me the shivers!

Re: "Trailer Popular" vs "Real Popular" - I think the vocals sound excellent, and very reminiscent of Kristen; it's just murked up by trailer-score backgrounds vs the actual orchestration that we'll get to hear (and which may not have even been completed yet). It gives off a similar vibe to movies like the Star Wars sequels which, instead of using old scores from the OT like the prequels did, gave us this weird "trailer-style" rendition of themes that would never be heard in the movie. I think they're being generous in teasing with the vocal tracks, but even those could have been recorded specifically for trailer purposes. I don't think we'll truly know what anyone sounds like until November, BUT I think we have evidence that Ariana and Cynthia will sound fantastic, and the rest of the cast seems fine as well (Jeff Goldblum as the sleezy cornfed hick wizard? Yeah, checks out.)
I feel like Ariana Grande being in a movie musical is not as concerning to me as other pop stars being in movie musicals. I feel that because 1) she has a history with musical theatre and a long standing love of it, 2) she was an actor before she was a pop star. Taylor Swift in Cats immediately made me not confident in the movie because as far as I know she doesn’t have a background in musicals and theatre. But Ariana does. Not to say Taylor Swift is what made cats horrible by any means cause there were a lot of things wrong with that. But this in clearly just made and acted by people who understand and have an appreciation of theatre.
Ariana Grande is also a Wicked Fan since she was a child. And it was her dream role. In a childhood video you can see a wicked poster in her childhood house bedroom.
Taylor Swift acc does have a background un musicals and theatre…i think the problem was it was just the Cats movie 😭💀
At its core, what it’s giving, IS L. Frank Baum! He was a lot more politically minded than I think people realize. Sometimes for the good, other times, not so much…, but I think the Wicked series novels, and in turn the musical, and now these films will definitely bring to the forefront!!
Gregory Maguire is also very political. He has said he based the wizard on George W Bush as an ineffectual and not very intelligent leader.
To me, the musical numbers in the trailer are like they're giving a sample taste of what's to come if you see it
Like if you see an TV ad showing clips from a musical to advertise the show, sometimes what they show without giving it all away can make the audience want to come and see what they can expect and more
That's how I felt when I first saw a trailer for Wicked the musical when it was coming to where I was living and the moment I watched it, I was hooked into seeing because it looked and sounded so interesting and amazing that I wanted to see it for myself
And let me tell you, this trailer here is like reliving that first time I saw the musical trailer for the show that got to see and fall in love with the show even now
I read the book and listened to the music but was never able to see the Broadway play. I been eagerly waiting for someone to do a movie for over 20 years now. I cried when i saw the trailer a couple days ago. I had no idea they were making a movie, i thought they forgot about it. I'm so excited for this! It looks like they chose a great director plus actors who can dance and sing. :)
I saw the one where Katie Rose Clarke was G(a)linda and listened to the soundtrack and loved it even more. Then I got the book and I still have yet to finish it.

I'm so excited but it's sad for me. My friend who was obsessed with Wicked and introduced me to it died in Feb right before her 36th bday from a heart attack. I will definitely see it in theaters in her memory.
100% convinced that was Kristen Chenoweth at the beginning - happy to be proven wrong but just sounds so much like her. Also if they haven't asked Idina Menzel to be Elphaba's mother in the flashbacks then they've missed a trick.
Also the news from Stephen Schwartz that there are four new songs in the film - 3 brand new and one that was cut from the show.

As someone who has seen wicked when it comes to our country every time, it's such a special musical and your inputs are so accurate and appreciated. I think this is going to honor the theatre show and stick almost word for word and that makes my heart so happy. Brilliant analysis and reaction.
at the end when you said "something's coming", i immediately went to "something bad ... happening at the stage door. EXCEPT AINT NO WAY THIS WILL BE BAD. more like something good!
Ryan is correct on all fronts regarding this film, it ain't broke, lets not try and "fix" anything. Die hard fans know there will be a lot pulled from the book, but for the love of all thats holy, please let "Ari kill this. When I fist saw Ari waving around her want At Elphaba, all I heard was Kristen's voice saying, "ball gown!" And Ari started with broadway as a child, so I was nervous yet excited for this role. She so far is giving me Glinda and not Ari, which is good. Also, Ryan is STUNNING.

Hearing you talk about the political nature of the story in Wicked makes me remember the time in a comment section about a Broadway Show (maybe Hamilton?) Talked about how they wished Broadway would get back to being non-political and used Wicked as an example of a non-political show and I was like What???? I am so in love with this trailer - I think I’m going to cry throughout this whole movie.
I've never clicked on a video so fast. I really need to somehow see the play, but I have never been more excited for a movie premiere. I was hesitant about Arianna playing Galinda, but seeing the trailer and the "passion project" video my opinion is changing.

To those demanding a carbon copy of the original Broadway cast recording, remember Elphaba's journey in finding her true self, and not conforming to expectations. The reason Wicked became a success is because it reinterpreted a story. Let's hope that we do hear a some "popstar Arianna" and some new Defying Gravity riffs from Cynthia Erivo-because mere imitation would be an ultimate betrayal of Elphaba's spirit.
Ariana would be slaughtered if she did "Popstar Ariana" given all the hesitation that exists around her. I hope they do not do that at all. Agreed on the Cynthia front though.

Thank You for clocking Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard! Out of all the reactions I've seen to this trailer, you are the only ones to notice him and comment on him! I didn't know anything about this movie going into the trailer; didn't even know it was happening. When I saw Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, my jaw dropped. I was like, "Well of course! He's the perfect Wizard!" Jeff Goldblum has made a career out of playing charlatans and eccentrics on the big screen. And now he's been cast as the Ultimate Eccentric Charlatan!
Full Disclosure: I haven't seen Wicked on stage. I may have to before I go see this movie. I am familiar with the songs, though. I mean, who doesn't know "Defying Gravity"? I am, also, of course, familiar with "The Wizard of Oz." (again, who isn't?)
I have a feeling this movie is going to be nominated for many awards. They may wait until Part 2 releases before nominating it. Whichever year they get nominated, I predict they're going to win all the awards they're nominated for.
I love both his and Michelle Yeoh's "understated" presence in these scenes. They are definitely choosing not to play these as over the top, cartoonlike villains and it works really wonderfully.
@@happyclam1266 I didn't even realize that was Michelle Yeoh until one of the reactors mentioned it. I was like, "WHAT?!" If this movie ends up actually being good, this could, very well, be the performance of her career.
The movie is supposed to include more from the book, so hoping the shots of young Elphaba will be scenes from the book. Also, I have heard the first movie will be called Wicked and the second movie will be called Wicked: For Good
yes its two parts! i think the general idea is that part 2 will pick up after defying gravity like the musical!
The moment that brought tears to my eyes was the look on Cynthia’s face when they embraced. There was such a story there of someone who is starved for friendship and affection.

Your Wicked content is some of my favorite & I remember thinking a while back Ryan would be such a great Fiyera for the movie. Oh, well. And Sam, love your Glinda tiara & enthusiasm.

I've read most of the book and quite a few of the chapters deal with Elphaba's childhood so I'm glad they added it. I have seen the musical live (for a birthday present) and I've seen it on TH-cam so much that I've memorized it. The trailer made me so happy. I was impressed.

Showing Elphaba as a child makes a lot of sense because as you guys mentioned, Jon Chu is unifyng every realm of the story, and mini Elphaba is in the book. I was actually really hoping they would include some of her childhood from the book because it is very interesting.

I’m sure Jonathan will do great, I’ve not watched anything he’s done but everyone seems to love him. But now KNOWING that Ryan auditioned, it hurts even more because he’s always been Fiyero in my dream cast list for the Wicked movie. That said, I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for a movie, now having seen the trailer as I’ve been somewhat nervous since the news broke of Ariana’s casting. I’m still not 100% convinced on her vocals in this trailer but her acting choices and line delivery in this trailer have completely swayed me. Mostly, I just can’t get over how absolutely stunning this looks visually. And when Defying Gravity came in with those slow piano notes, I genuinely got goosebumps. Besides my Eras Tour show next month, this movie is going to be the best thing about 2024 for me.

Hahaha! You would have made a great film Fiyero, Ryan. But movie producers/directors often default to "bankable" film stars that audiences know, so that people not familiar with the movie, will go because that star is in it, so they can make back their $$.
I'm SO stoked! The casting was genius. And finally we have a black Elphaba. Finally. Given the themes, it should have happened before. And I'm also so excited about them not shying away from the political aspect of it, because it is SO important in these times. Even more than it was when Wicked was written.

So as a Black Man, part me hates the casting of Jonathan. I understand why they don’t want a MOC in the lead role (don’t need to go down the rabbit hole) but I want the production to be embarrassed for those reason they didn’t cast of MOC.

I'm curious. If this part 1 ends with Defying Gravity, how will they translate the feeling of seeing Elphaba rise from the stage in a live show to end Act 1. That is definitely thrilling to see live for the first time but on the screen there are other more cinematic options. It will probably heavily rely on the performances regardless of how they end the song (and part 1) on screen. ??

Good video. Something to possibly consider: letting the trailer play through the first time so viewers (especially ones just finding your channel) can see your reaction to the entire trailer without breaking the flow--then doing the pausing and rewinding on a second pass.
yeah this was my issue too. the constant pausing and talking over while watching made them miss some key moments. they should’ve watched it once and then another time where they can review it properly.
I think it will start with Dorothy from the teaser, we'll see elphaba melt, and then have it go right into "She's Dead" from No one Mourns The Wicked.
I noticed that when Elphaba scares Galinda, its actually the very end of “What is this feeling” And I’ve literally been listening to the Original Soundtrack on repeat because i think my school might be doing it in the spring.

The casting call for the movie adaptation specify for paraplegic actresses so this maybe the first time an actress playing Nessarose is giving honest representation of an actor with disabilities
@Bennome I think it's great that someone with a disability may have actually been cast for this role! However, one disability doesnt discount another. the disability she has in the book is called Phocomelia syndrome. It is a real disability too.

One thing that kinda concerns me is that Ariana sings the "La... la..." in Popular as a singer. And maybe it's something that only me cares about, but I've always understood that moment to be something that the character of Glinda sings herself? Like, if you listen to any (? I haven't heard all of them but I think so) Glinda sing that part, it's always with no vibrato, and in an almost "bad"/non-singery way. And to me that's always been Glinda literally singing in that moment, with that particular blend of zero talent/huge confidence that we know and love from her, and it's a cool little detail of "Popular".
Am I crazy? Is this an invention of my crazy little mind? Would love you guys' opinion on this.
4:17 I completely agree, Ryan! They did that with the 2024 Mean Girls (even going as far as to remove any songs that sounded too “musical theatre”, such as Damien’s solo) and it almost completely ruined the entire movie for me.
I think defying gravity will sound like this first riff, I think she will do that instead of “it’s not her” or after the big riff there will be a line form someone else and then as she flies off that will be the riff
Fiyero: Did you read the book the musical was based on? There's a lot more depth, and a lot of material excised or relegated to a few throwaway lines and a couple of scenes, as the play became more about Glinda and less the story of the wwotw, as the book was. In the book, the only distinction between animals and Animals is the capital-lettered Animals have the power of speech. So Dr. Dillamond is actually a full-fledged goat. On broadway, much easier in a play full of quick changes, to make him bipedal, but that's one of the many changes made for the stage. I am not knocking the changes, I understand how Kristin's performance informed a lot of changes made to the plot, and that to contain everything in the book would make for a 6-hour play. And they seem to be going back to the book. Wicked the musical would be a good 2.5-hour film. However, if they are going back to the book and adding the depth and plot points they had to jettison for broadway, that makes sense for a two part movie release. It's not just padding, it's relevant stuff that had to be winnowed so people would not be stuck sitting for 6 hours a show. And that would make matinées rather difficult for both actors, crew and audience! LOL
I am excited to see this. Especially if i am right about adding back the depth and meaning of the book. If you haven't read the book, do so. It's a good read and deeply relevant to what's going on in the world today. Gregory Maguire's 2003 book was very prescient in many ways. I was dubious about the casting until I saw this trailer. I think it's in good hands. And the scenic design is amazing. I just hope both director, choreographer, and cinematographer went back and watched "That's Entertainment 1,2,and 3" to learn how to film dance numbers. No one did dance numbers right like MGM. A forgotten art, because musicals are so rare now, and usually filmed like crappy MTV videos with way too many closeups and not enough longshots.

One of my closer high school friends is Nessa Rose and I couldn’t be more excited for this to come out!
I seen Idina Menzel live in Wicked so I am a little biased because I feel like that song was made specifically for her theatre actress bold and loud voice. But Cynthia literally gives me chills when she sings. This whole trailer gives me chills honestly as it takes me back to sitting in that theater and being torn to shreds by watching this play. Both Cynthia and Arianna are killing it. BTW- I think they actually did reimagine the songs so that popular you heard is actually in the movie.
To avoid me talking about the book and play too much here, all I am going to say is the Bridgeton stans are hyped to see Jonathon and “mr. i am a gentleman Anthony Bridgeton” on the big screen.
