It is one of the five main Shaivite holy places in South India, with the renowned Annamalaiyar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at its base. Every year, the Karthigai Deepam (Light) is ceremoniously lit atop the hill during the Tamil month of Karthigai, symbolizing divine illumination.
Our journey takes us to multiple sacred caves, each with its own profound history. Skandasramam, a tranquil hermitage shaded by majestic trees, overlooks the magnificent Arunachaleswara Temple. It was here that Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi resided from 1916 to 1922, imparting his wisdom to spiritual seekers. The Skandasramam can be reached via the backside of the Ramanasramam, requiring a scenic uphill climb of 1.4 kilometers. This serene abode provides an ideal setting for meditation, enveloped in the sanctity of the mountain.
The second cave, Virupaksha Cave, is shaped like the sacred symbol 'Om' and houses the samadhi (final resting place) of Sage Virupaksha. Bhagavan Sri Ramana spent a significant portion of his early years from 1899 to 1916 in this mystical abode. Both caves hold immense historical and spiritual significance and are carefully preserved and maintained by Sri Ramanasramam for the benefit of spiritual seekers and visitors.
