Stucco color coating explained. Is your home built over an underground stream?
In this video, we explain how to apply a new stucco finish over a year-old existing wall and the best advice from your favorite stucco expert.
FYI, to wet or moist cure a color finish is a cardinal sin.
Water is necessary for the scratch and brown coat; however, to moist cure, a new color coat before 5 to 7 days is foolish as that will create ghosting or color bleaching.
It’s best to hydrate after at least 5 to 7 days as the finish coat has Portland cement which, when wet, gets stronger.
Some smooth finishes can spider crack because if they are never moist-cured or hydrated, the base coat when one applies the necessary water to apply the finish coat for the mechanical bond, will crack the base coat like an egg. Thus, any finish on it will also crack.
We have many videos on hydration, ghosting, and spider cracking in new smooth finishes.
You can also install a new stucco color finish over any new or existing base coat.
Note it does not matter if the base coat is two weeks old to one hundred years old the methods are the same.
For all folks who ask, Kirk, can I put new stucco over old stucco? Absolutely, see how here.
Homeowners, instead of painting, a better option would be requesting a new integrated colored stucco finish.
A colored stucco finish never needs painting, ever.
They are 50 to 70 times thicker than paint, depending on the necessary sand girt to accomplish what you want.
We used a La Habra color coat with a heavy sand finish or 16/20; the color was Souther Moss.
You would have to google “plastering yards near me” to buy bags of LaHabra, Western BMI, Carson’s, Dry-Vit, or Stucco-Flex finish bags; these are just a handful of companies that make and sell finish exterior stucco.

@@donaldbrown716 Morning Donald my fellow plasterer, that's a Damned coincidental question, I was at Westside Building Materials about two days ago, and this dude was loading about 50 bags of the stuff. So I walked over and said, brother, if you're going to load those bags wear a mask and gloves. He sort of looked at me with a smirk, said thanks for the tip.
I went on and said about 35 years ago I was working in the union for Mc Dermitt and Seally, located in Oakland, I was an apprentice plasterer, they got me a job working shooting Monacoat on high risers in SF, man, that was some scary shit, as the two back wheels of the cheery picker kept lifting off the ground as I was up three stories and shooting from the cage, due to too much weight from the hose. That was scary but what happened later was hella scarier than that.
That's not the point of this story, I was paid journeymen wages to do that nasty shit, the first check, I thought, man, I in heaven, thought Id be rich soon.😏
A few days llaater, after work I was standing on a porch at the Haward rental property, my son Jason was about a year old and my new wife and I lived there.
Any way, as usual, I removed my clothes before entering the house, I shook my shirt off and the dust was sucked into a Christmas tree about 18 feet tall in front of the porch, I thought it amusing even showed my wife, three days later that tree was dead, I'm talking died dead brown as if someone pored roundup on it.
I quit that job the next day, even with the thought of making big dollars as I wasn't going to sacrifice my wife and my sons Jason's health for cash.
After I told him that part, he said, yo man, thanks for the tip, but this time he meant it.
Now nothing against Monocoat, because all the stuff we apply has toxins it is like interior plasters, a girl lost some finger in Britain playing with it, its no joke.
Plus all the stucco we use most has lye and silica in it, just as harmful to us as asbestos, perhaps worse.
This is not to criticize any of the materials we apply or give fear to anyone, but you asked my opinion.
Wear good masks and gloves with all the stuff we apply; now mixing is where the real dust is.
Mixed or was a hod carried for about 3 years in the late 70s. Worked for Sam Hoff back then. Ole Sam was a cool guy; he even attended my wedding.
I've never worn masks or jewelry as they annoy me.
Why ain't I dead? Not sure; maybe I'm half cockroach. 🤔

Kirk I stood on a bucket on a scaffold it kick when I step off. Causing be to fall I landed head
first.Breaking both wrist elbow knee cap end up two plates in my head breaking my jaw and traumatic brain damage not a good I yelled at one of my guys the day before for the same stunt and I pulled it the next day. Ended up causing me to lose my commercial Business not worth it guys. Took 3 years to recover from it physically and mentally. Only by the grace of God I'm still alive.

Great plasterers are actually a dime a dozen I personally know literally hundreds of plasterers and they all have a technique that the next plaster lacks and likewise down the line, Remember this gents You and your crew are only as good as your Greenest hand.
When I see any plasterer wearing gloves I immediately know he doesn't know how to use his tools properly or have the correct technique.

Actually hes right only when aplplicating interior plaster naturally gloves are a necessity when materials full of lime and sand are at play but what i want to know is WHO wears a lathing belt when speading mud? I'll never understand that one.

I want to thank you so much for telling me about this silica! I didn’t know about that! I am a maintenance worker just working on some small jobs here and I wanted to learn about stucco. I didn’t know that was that dangerous to breathe the powder! I haven’t been working with concrete for too long so I just hope I’m ok! I have a two-year-old daughter and It will be a shame for her to lose her daddy at such a young age. Thank you I think you save my life.

I had my daughter help me when she was younger and we hung doors, windows, put up crown moldings etc., she now she is a Registered Nurse in a hospital and helping those unfortunate souls who caught the virus.

I like to shake the stucco used for the skip back from the edge before going up on the wall. I get no "knife" edges. I was 20 when an old (retired) union plasterer who worked out at Disneyland showed me that. I'm 74 now. Had to get a new shoulder last year. Plastering is tough work if not dangerous at times. Good stuff Kirk. Been watching a coupe years now.

This is my absolute favorite TH-cam channel. I’d love to work with this man for about 3 to 6 months but watching the channel will have to do. West Virginia is just a little too far from Cali but we have plenty of under ground streams here.

One of the local masonry guys here uses a small mini manlift instead
of scaffolding as much as he can. Works well and takes a lot less setup time.

The first house my parents owned was probably built in the 1910s. They bought it in 1947. Stucco on wood lath. Nebraska's mild climate was not a friend to wood lath! The interior was also on wood lath. People had tried to nail pictures to the wall, bad idea. I'm 78 and worked construction most of my life. Big old houses had crown moldings formed in place with plaster over wood lathe. I repaired a lot of them but with expanded metal lath. Almost no plaster work is done around here any more. Interior is all gyp bd. Outside is over foam.
Howdy Larry, the same here, however, there's enough repair work from before the 60 when sheetrock was starting out to keep a few thousand plasterers busy for a few lifetimes.

I can not even begin to give the praise this guy deserves. But i will still try.
Everytime i watch content from this channel, i walk away with a bit more knowledge. Although you could probably watch just a few, of the in depth videos like this video, and you will have seen everything there is to know about doing stucco, because this guy's approach to explaining what he does, is nearly as flawless as what he does. I tried my hand at doing skip trowel finishing (for only the 2nd time in my life) just recently after watching a couple videos from this channel, and i am thoroughly impressed with how it turned out. I have a very strong construction background spanning across 34 years, although i am only 46. I have done plenty of standard stucco float finishes in the past, almost completely inefficiently, lacking any kind of real technique. And this channel has given me the correct pointers to make my stucco projects come out beautifully. Thank you so much!! Wish i could tell you this to your face while giving you a very firm handshake. 🤝

Good deal Tom, it's better to work with it, but understanding the do's and don't and material knowledge is greater than one's ability to learn how to spread stucco.

@@StuccoPlastering Your videos helped me immensely. While I didn't find exactly what I was looking for, I may have been up against something that was custom made and a one of a kind, but I doubt it. I just can't find any mention of it on ANY video or web site or anywhere. I got it done though. I had to actually MAKE some of the moulding by hand and was able to recreate the exact shape of it. I was pretty happy. All glory to God! Thank you!!

Used to do stucco up here in MN. We were doing a brown coat, 3 ends up or so and the tender moved some planks to set the next jump. He didn't know the hawk and trowel were above him as he reached up to move planks. I was on the ground mixing mud and shoveling it up 2 jumps. While I was shoveling up to the 1st, he was moving planks, hawk fell (heavy w mud) and hit me right in the face. Cut half my nose off. Never forget how fast that mud in the wheelbarrow turned red, which I believe they still put on the house...
Spent many hours at hospital, deep scrubbing to get mud out of my nose.
Didnt hurt much but boy did I look like a monster when I looked in a truck mirror right after it happened. If it woulda hit me in the head, who knows..
I've shoved many many dump trucks of sand in my life, thousands of bags of Portland, tk and fiber and I loved every minute of it. Now I'm 40, fat and reminiscing while watching your vids.

hey Kirk, I completed my one and only stucco job due to you. One of the hardest thing I ever did. A past carpenter, I was hard up for money and a friend let me stucco one of his rentals. A painted cement block. I followed all your instruction. The only problem was you make it look easy. I ended up spraying it on with a hopper scoop but it was florida in august and the stucco seemed to set up almost instantly.. I like to do a high quality job so I put it on twice as quick as contractors I see in the area.
I'm very interested in putting stucco over insulation. I'm into building techniques and it only makes sense for energy efficiency value. I thought of putting half inch treated plywood strips, one and half insulation foam and then stucco the top with stucco. I wish you would do something like this. My technique blocks the heat radiation, thermal break and then leaving the block for thermal mass. I'm a midwestern carpenter and now digging into stucco because of you. Kepp up the work and let me know what you think. I think with energy and solar panels your viewers would like it. Dig it into solar panel insulation etc. Solar salesmen are sweeping my area in florida.
Good evening NK Dude, Stucco over the insulation board is far from new, it's been here in the US for about 70 years. It was started in the UK.
Its called the Dry-Vit system, first a moister barrier is attached to the wood wall, then the Styrofoam board, then Fiberglass mesh with Polybond to adhere to it.
A color finish is then often applied.
when I first started in the stucco trade 40 years ago, we did many kaiser hospitals and schools using that system.
Today there are about 20 different manufactures that come up with similar ideas as it worked fine.
