Liam Clancy & Tommy Makem - The Parting Glass

- "The Parting Glass" is an Irish and Scottish traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. It was allegedly the most popular song sung in both Scotland and Ireland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne". This song has a dual heritage as some of the lyrics were quoted in a letter by a Scottish man who was making his way over to Ireland; around this time there were many Scottish settlers arriving in Ireland and so the song was then combined with both cultures.
The Irish song is thoughtful and quiet, though the old Scottish version, "Good Night and Joy Be With You All," is quite lively and uses roughly the same melody, an old type of tune called the Scots Measure.
The celebrated Irish folk song collector, Colm O Lochlainn, pointed out that The Parting Glass shares its melody with Sweet Cootehill Town. This is another traditional farewell song, this time involving a man leaving Ireland to go to America.
The soundtrack of my youth. My father was from Clare, my mother from Kerry. Every Sunday the Irish music was on. God bless these gentlemen and may they rest in peace.

For me...people like Liam Clancy, Tommy Makem, Dylan et al...they're more than musicians...they're poets, storytellers, bards... The world is a sadder place without these two...but their music will live forever... and inspire the next generations
Thanks for checking out my site and for sharing your thoughts.
Earð-Stapa 530 I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Clancy. I was however graced with the good fortune of Mr. Makem and his sons here in Dover, NH. A gentle and modest man of great dignity. He is and always will be a great champion of the working class.Oh how we need him still.
Can’t leave out pierce brosnan version 👍
This isn't "their" music it is a old Scottish song from the 1700s.
They’re bards/seanchaithe
This is the greatest version of perhaps the greatest song of all time.

Vale Liam. A voice like good whiskey, warm and forceful.
A moving song, to which I was just introduced---at age 89! This is one of the most moving interpretation of this touching piece.
his family sang this at His Fumeral ....very moving
This song hurts too deep.....I've lost so many....all fun...most of us Irish! To all that have travelled the path on without me.....our parting is bitter..but reunion will be sweet! SLANTE!!🍀
God rest your souls, gentlemen. How you have enriched us all.
To be sung at the beginning of my wake (Wild Ass Keggar Experience). As sure as God created the good green Earth, Liam Clancy was born to stand on a stage and tug at our heart strings. A personal friend of Bob Dylan, who pails in comparison. Thank God for the Irish who sing sad songs for the rest of us.
The moments and the times you have spent with that glass of yours.
; savor each drop.
What an unforgettable song! (& such a perfectly lovely rendition....) It always touches my heart....such a shame that great talents like these cannot stay with us forever...they're greatly missed. I'll raise my glass to them both in thanks & farewell!
Thanks Sera for visiting my site and for your comments.
One of the best live performances I’ve ever heard, drunken cheers from Sweden 🥃
It's so hard to concentrate on anything else while Clancy sings!

Hers to you Ray- Happy St. Patrick’s Day☘️☘️❤️🌹
but since it falls onto my lot, then i should rise and you should not ...class
They were talented individuals, each in his own way but, above all, they were Irish.
Whoooo. This right here. Heavenly.
Was Liam a singer, a poet or a story teller? It seems like he combines all 3 at times to create a connection with the listener like few others. His can invigorate with craic and haunt with sorrow.
Thank you Mr. Hammer... a real treat this was!
Thanks Tristan for checking out the channel.
Thing about these two. Is when they past on. We all lost a good friend.
The best of the best
Thank you Fergus.
Great song and singer
beautiful song!!! Makem+Clancy Legends💓
Great rendition by Liam and Tommy!!
Tommy and the Clancy Brothers were big in America, but sadly we'd never heard of them here in England more's the pity.
By contrast The Dubliners gigged a lot in England and were big here.
I saw them live in the Royal Albert Hall in 1968! Some of us certainly enjoyed their music in the Sixties! Happy St. Patrick's Day coming up!
Love this.
I love this song
Just learned that this song was performed at Peter O’Toole’s service in 2013.
But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not,
Ach thiteann sé go dtí mo bheart, go éireoidh mé in ionad thú,
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, "Goodnight and joy be with you all!"
Éireoidh mé go cheansa ‘gus ghloaigh go bhog, oíche mhaith ‘gus sonas libh go léir
A man may drink and not be drunk, a man may fight and not be slain
Ólfaidh fear ach b’fheidir nach mbeidh sé ar meisce, nó triod le duine gan bheith briste
Can you make sure his nearest friends get to hear this song it is very close to us here Ireland as was Matthew thank you ❤
Stunning
Thank you for visiting my site and for taking the time to comment.
I was struck that Bob Dylan must have been inspired by this song when he wrote his song Restless Farewell
Ah, the memories
i listen to a lot of irish music im back to this again ,the best singer ive ever hear ,id hold me hands up ,and there lots of excellent ballad singers
How is this Irish? It was written in Scotland and sung for hundreds of years in Scotland before it even reached Ireland's shores. It is just a song and songs don't have a nationality, well only if the country are mentioned by name, that's about it.
That Whistle . South Armaghs finest
So fill to me the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.
Líon domsa ‘nois an gloine déalú, oíche mhaith ‘gus sonas libh go léir.
Of all the comrades that e'er I had, they're sorry for my going away,
Ó na compánaigh go léir a bhí agam, tá brón orthu slán a fhágáil liom,
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had, they would wish me one more day to stay,
‘gus na ghealgrá go léir a bhí agam, ba mhian dóibh liom fanacht lá eile,

Now that is an impressive post Timothy.
Of all the money that e'er I had, I spent it in good company.
Ón airgead go léir bhí riamh agam, chaith mé é i comhluadar.
And of all the harm that e'er I've done, alas it was to none but me.
‘s an trioblóid go léir a rinne mé, ní raibh sé d’éinne ach mé fhéin.
And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I can't recall.
Gach rud a rinne mé don easpa crithir, mo chuimhne ‘nois gan aon athghlaogh.
coming here from AC
Ronnie drew nailed this song. Great music. Time for a beer
Very moving! The song is Scottish I think .
Yes
Thanks, but i didn't do the translation. A beautiful Galway girl, Eileen Brennan, did that.
A man may court a pretty girl and perhaps be welcomed back again
Nú feicfidh fear cailín dathiúil agus beidh fáilte roimh go deo
But since it has so ordered been by a time to rise and a time to fall
Ach mar atá sé ordaithe anois, le am chun éirigh ‘s am chun titim
Come fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all
Tar ‘s líon domsa an gloine déalú, oíche mhaith ‘gus sonas libh go léir
☘️🍻🥃
