Liam was to me the first music I ever heard and (God willing) the last I will ever hear. I even met him once and tried to tell him how much the CB/TM meant to me...I couldn't find the word but he understood. He even sang a song for my departed father. I am a lifelong lover of music and am a musician, but no one and nothing will ever mean as much to me as Liam's singing. God bless, rest, and give glory.
Great interview, thank you, Liam still is one of the most inspiring singers, of all time. In NYC, he frequented one of my connected families' bars and made quite an impression. Peace
Glad to have happened upon this interview. Liam along wiht his brothers and Tommy Makem were a big part of my life. They were more than the sum of their parts. They are all gone now...but never to be forgotten.
God Bless'em
He was arguably the finest ballad singer of our times. We're greatly impoverished by his leaving us, but I'm sure he's singing somewhere in a Heavenly Choir.
As Ronnie Browne said of Roy, after Roy's death, "They'd better look to their laurels up there."
Requiescat In Pace, Liam
Liam Clancy a true pure Irishman ,, loved his country , the patriot games said it all ,, he delivered it beautifully, and truly wore his heart on his sleeve,,when Luke Kelly and Liam went our great Irish folk singers were gone, we have none anymore, sadly, god rest them, ❤️🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️☘️
I had the privilege and honour of sitting in on the television filming of a whole years worth of shows back in the 1970s….Liam Clancy was one fine musician and an integral part of a musical era….Makem and Clancy set the standard for the Irish Folk Music phenomenon!
He was looking shook by the time this was filmed. Sad to see, but what a wonderful man. One of the greatest greatest ever.
Love Liam, Miss Liam.
Good interview loved listening to him sing. Rest in peace Liam.
Saw The Yellow Bittern in Dungarvan yesterday. Stunning, beautiful, poignant! Not at all what I expected - but a fitting tribute to an exceptional man. Such a shame you weren't there last night Liam -the theatre was overflowing with love for you. Get well soon. Eileen
I feel like I have missed something great in this world. What I would give to spend but one minute in this man's presence. This world is a worse place without him.
Thank you for keeping this thread open. I believe that the Clancys were one of the great formative influences upon my life. Sixty-some years later I still can do most of the lyrics!
Liam was sincere , impressive and as we all know ,gifted with a great musical voice and talent, wish that I could have met him and shook his hand, old fashioned and real was Liam Clancy, rest in peace and thanks for the wonderful entertainment, sincerly , Jim in P.E.I. Canada
I like watching Paul Byrne' face at last - glad to meet you, Paul!
The way Liam Clancy is speaking is enjoyable!
So smoothing!
Thank you for posting this interview. :-)
Ah...Rest in Peace Liam...
(He brought joy to so many people.)
We miss him so much, surely he is with us in spirit...
Liam Clancy, and the rest of the lads, will be sadly missed. What a great hero you were to us all in Ireland, as we got our first guitars and followed your lead. Very enjoyable times.
Mr. Clancy... I just heard of it today, and I feel ashamed that I didn't learn it sooner. Lots of people have commented, and more will as they discover, but I just wanted to say, in words that don't seem close enough as I type this, that you weren't the first who made me pick up a guitar, but you were the first I remember hearing as a kid on road trips to anywhere in our van, where I couldn't sleep because I was transfixed by your words. And now... I just hope we can make you proud. So, Thanks.
Bob Dylan on Liam Clancy: "I have never heard a singer as good as Liam, ever. He was just the best ballad singer I'd ever heard in my life."
Well said, Bob.
Liam Clancy is to ballads what Louis Armstrong is to jazz.
Such a lovely, well spoken man .
so well spoken...love how he tells a story...love and miss him
Bless him, I moved back to Ireland for 17 months, after over 40 years away, went to see him in Co Cavan with my late with my mum 200 whilst there, wish I asked him for a selfie!! God bless him, retrospectively I have often wondered if he knew it might be his last tour xxx 😁.
Rest in Peace Liam. Words are not enough.
I love you, Liam. You have been my inspiration to continue. I'll see you again.
Thank you for posting something so interesting from a great singer.
What a wonderful man! Rest in Peace, Liam Clancy!
you are so lucky to get to talk to that great man!!
How sad a lot are we now with only 85000 hits. I actually met and had a pint with him on one of his b'day's. Only then did I stare into the eyes and catch a whisper of total greatness, as well as genius beyond my comprehension
An emotionally intelligent accurate perspectice on life great man and wat a singer rip
What a beautiful man he was and so humble too.A true legend of Ireland up there with all our legends and heroes. True gent.Died a 3 months later.
"When I first heard Tommy Makem and the Clancy's my
future it was sealed
I was bitten by the ballad bug and since then the wound
has never healed
When I got my first guitar my fingers bled until I
learned a chord or two
I pulled on my aran sweater, wrote my Ma a goodbye
letter
And started throwing shapes in O'Donoghue's"....Liam One Of Our Greatest troubadour's...
Liam was the last and the world is a poorer place without him and his brothers and Tommy Makem. His nephew, Finbar is carrying the torch beautifully with his group, The High Kings.
Liam passed away on the afternoon of 4th December 2009. Rest In Peace Liam.
Safe Journey Liam, may the angels of music guard you against any foe as you make your way home. No fear no envy no meanness will stand to you now brother. Slán go fóill Liam.
Bob Dylan
Thankful for this great soul
I agree with you Eibhlin. Great doc, and so moving. Liam is under no illusions - he is to be so respected for his attitude and approach to life.I hope he gets well soon.
All the best Liam.
Robbie.
RIP to all the clancy brothers
And Tommy Makem
What a gent!!
Liam was great and so was his friend tommy Makem Brilliant Duo
Well..we had him for so long...I guess we should be grateful that we can still enjoy his many performances that 'survive.' But still, when the likes of a Liam Clancy takes his leave, our world is diminished, so diminished.
Requiescat In Pace, Liam (1935 -- 2009)
There is not a day that passes that I do not listen to or view (video) a song performed by Liam!

RIP Liam, the other Clancys and Tommy Makem
What a painful thing to watch. I knew Liam pretty well for most of the 60s and on and off after that and the man was just so full of life. Mind you, there is lots of life in this video even though his body is failing him but still, it pained me. I just wonder how he will be reincarnated.
….within all of us every time we sing or play guitar. Without him, I never would have learned either.
A fine good Irishman
what did he die of?
@seabreeze08 Ah, This Murray loved him!
Is that an inhaler behind Liam? What did Liam die of? Forgive me for my ignorance.

'what WE really wanted to know...'?? Speak for yourself.
Isn't it grand, boys, to be jolly well dead?!
whether it be the interviewer or comments below, just because Bob Dylan says something doesn't mean it's true. The fact is Liam was a much more talented performer and singer compared to Dylan who was obviously heavily promoted and even had his own cover band(The Byrds). Liam wasn't a writer really which is the only reason Dylan gets more adieu. If Dylan had to rely on his voice and guitar playing alone he would have been out of business from the start.
