Our ancestors, the Mayans, had this belief that certain gods had a common purpose, and each god was a different veneration, the reasons why they sacrificed people. The Mayans sacrificed humans, as a way of offering to their gods, and obtain their favor: So that it rains, So that the crops are fertile, To win the war, To appease the gods in case of droughts or epidemics. The sacrifices were supervised by priests and were part of a very important religious activity for the Mayans. Kukulcán is a god highly revered by the Mayans, and many powers over the earthly world are attributed to him. He is considered a creator and bearer god of rain and winds. He is also related to wisdom and intelligence, and it is believed that he provided the world with it. In Mayan mythology, Kukulcán is associated with the creation of the universe and corn. He is represented with objects and animals that symbolize the four elements necessary for life: earth, water, air and fire. In Chichén Itzá, a large temple was built in honor of Kukulcán, known as the Temple of Kukulcán or Kukulcán pyramid. This monument symbolizes the Mayan solar calendar, and is considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. The Spanish ships, at the end of the movie, were an expedition, by the men of the general, Hernan Cortez. Greetings from México.
There's a bit more nuance and misunderstanding, because the locals in the Yucatan will tell you they didn't practice human sacrifice (at least the pre-Classical Mayans), it was the Toltecs who introduced human sacrifice into the region. But yes you're right, they had different ritual sacrifices for different gods.

The Spanish destroyed the books of the Maya believing they were the work of Satan. Five of the books survived. We know that they were great mathematicians and had a calendar that was extremely accurate. They could also predict celestial events like solar and lunar eclipses.
When they weren't cutting peoples hearts out, chopping their heads off, and wearing their skin for a smoking jacket. Only God knows what other sickening acts they did.
@@4KandlezA lot of those claims are exaggerated from Hernan Cortez and his partners they used the Barbaric nature of the Aztecs as an excuse to conquer the land. Oh yea and God isn’t real 😂
I'm sure only the elites were allowed to learn about those topics to exploit the masses. I also don't know which "advanced civilization" [was] the most atrocious-the Aztecs or the Plains Indians. Also, maybe those 5 books were the only books that didn't talk about gore, the occult, or other obscene subjects lol. Edit: I switched the word "tribes" for "advanced civilization" so people don't miss the point of my comment. Also, the level of gore and violence of public executions displayed in Europe was not a daily occurrence, as it was with the Aztecs that would do so to worship their false and therefore dead gods. So I guess that answers the question as to which "advanced civilization" was the worst.
@@RubenDReyna You are right about the elites being the only ones with the knowledge to predict celestial events, and this knowledge was used to control the masses. The Aztec sacrificed over 50,000 people in 3 days. I would put them at number 1 on the scale of inflicting sheer terror on their neighbors. They had an unusual way of selecting war leaders. The men would gather at the temple of warriors naked each with a needle and push the needle through their penises until they passed out. The last man standing was their war leader. I spent a week in the Yucatan and another week in Mexico City visiting friends. I talked with historians with expertise on these civilizations and purchased several books for my library. When I was in the Yucatan a Mayan took me to a huge cave where his ancestors hid from the Spaniards. The cave was an archeological site so we were limited to certain areas. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I assure you that if I had been a Mayan warrior I would have been happy to be a private.😊
@@4Kandlez that was not a Mayan thing, that was a Toltec-Aztec thing that was introduced into the Yucatan (which is what we see represented here), but other groups also did similar practices. To think it was only the Americas is a lack of understanding history; the Celts, Vikings, Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Scythians, Chinese, etc. The vast majority of human history had some form of it.
Such a good movie and a great reaction! It's really hard to watch, but not all civilizations and cultures have our morals and ethics. Right and wrong are different from a Mayan view to ours.
Imo, it highlights why it's really hard to judge people in different historical times and eras too. Slavery is anathema in our modern world and has been for over 100 years. Yes, it still exists in different places, but we are shocked, saddened, outraged, etc, when we hear of some persons or people trapped in it. Throughout most of human history, they wouldn't have been shocked and it would have been the norm that people were enslaved. Were the Romans, the Egyptians, whomever "evil" for having had slaves? Probably not. They were men and women of their time period and geographic location, likely both good and bad, just living their lives according to the values of their time. We hold certain values, mores and morals, in common, just like they did. Some later generation may judge us harshly, for something normal to us.
Apocalypto (2006) was nominated for three Academy Awards but won none: Best Achievement in Sound Editing, Best Achievement in Makeup, and Best Achievement in Sound Mixing.
In those days there were runners who traveled several kilometers and brought sea fish to the emperor, one brought it from the sea, the other gave it to the next in the next city and and so on until it reached the hands of the emperor. They were all hunters, so it doesn't sound so far-fetched that the main character of the film ran so many kilometers.
I have seen this movie in years, watched it several times as part of film classes I took over the years. Really well made and put together film, although definitely a tense one to watch. Really enjoyed your reaction and how much you engage with what is going on in your reactions!

The Spanish eventually conquered the Aztec and what was left of Mayan civilization, after the collapse 500 years before, with the aid of thousands of native troops. These natives probably allied with the Spanish to defeat their tormenters.
Not probably, it´s a known fact. 99% of the troops were natives. They allied with the spaniards to put and end to imperialism and slavery by the aztecs and mayans (mayans had already collapsed for the most part). Interracial marriage was legalized in the begining of the 16th century, slavery was banned because spaniards were catholics and believed all men were God´s sons, natives were declared spanish citizens with the same rights as the european spaniards, cities, universities, hospitals were created, 80% of the natural resources extracted stayed in the territories of New Spain (America is a made up word created by the protestants in order to erase Spain from the discovery of the new world), native languages were studied and preserved by the universities, and both civilizations mixed genetically and culturally, unlike what happened in North America. This is the truth, everything else is protestant anglo-saxon propaganda.
@@ablacklakeawhitelake Where did you learn your history? The Spanish plundered the New World and re-established the feudal system that was dying in Europe. The nobility that was left out of Papa's estate (younger male siblings) come to the New World to establish their estates. This is why the more European your background the better off you are in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Look at their presidents and other leaders, they are for the most part of European descent. The indigenous people make up the poorer classes. Give me a break. I studied this at the University of Florida before professors became agents of Anti-American / Communist propaganda. Some of what I have said has begun to change very slowly. Much of this change is due to many of Latin America's poor (read mostly the brown people) coming to the US and earning enough to build wealth and either send money home or go back with enough cash to set up a business back home. I am as fluent in Spanish as I am in English. I was an independent contractor after retiring from teaching and I have worked with dozens of these people. I have traveled in Central America so my knowledge comes from books and experience. All you're doing is spreading what you learned in a college course somewhere.
@@ablacklakeawhitelake You really need to get your facts straight. You are 100% wrong regarding slavery South of the US border. The Spanish not only held slaves but we're one of the primary slave traders in the Americas. Slavery was abolished in Latin America as each nation gained its independence from Spain. So by the first quarter of the 19th Century most countries had abolished slavery. As for interracial marriages, they were a taboo and still are in most Spanish speaking countries. That's not to say there isn't interracial sex, just not marriage. There is an old Spanish tradition called, "la casa grande y la casa chica." La casa grande is your married life while la casa chica is where you have your mistress and her kids. Racism is alive and well in most Latin American countries. The upper classes run most big businesses. Your low wage workers are mostly the sons and daughters of indigenous / African heritage people.
@@mikealvarez2322 You´re wrong about everything you wrote on your comment. Everything I explained is in the national archives of the spanish crown, so old sayings are really worthless. Slavery existed in "America" before the spaniards arrived, they ended it. Interracial marriage was not only NOT a taboo, it was ENCOURAGED by the monarchy and the catholic church, and the proof is all the mestizo population of ex-spanish territories. Even Hernan Cortes married a native woman, for God´s sake, your ignorance is hilarious. If interracial marriage is a taboo and racism is a thing nowadays, as you say, that´s on you, not on spaniards. If the low income workers are the indigenous today, that´s also on you, not on the spaniards.

A real crackerjack of a Film, as a remote tribe of hunter, gatherers and farmers is overpowered by a Mayan raiding party looking for people to sacrifice; Thus begins a desperate tale of survival for one of the tribe as he attempts to, against the odds return too his pregnant wife and son, using wit and cunning; Two scenes stand out for myself, the mother giving birth alone, almost submerged in water, to which I have to say Emma reacts with a real heartfelt/emotional passion that is deeply moving, and at the end when they spot the Ships standing of the Coast, the Conquistadors(Spanish) have arrived and the natives lives would never be the same again, facing a new, violent and driven force; Against this backdrop Emma gives a sincere/stylish/charming/eloquent and adroit reaction, whilst all the time just being so winsomely beautiful; 🦁🥰😘👏🙏👍🙏🎶🎵🎶🎧🎙🍵🙌🤪🍁🍁🦅.
What happened next was Cortez and the Spanish conquest of Mexico. In terms of cinema, however, a good follow up would be Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), an epic historical drama directed by Werner Herzog and starring Klaus Kinski in the title role of Spanish soldier Lope de Aguirre, who leads a group of conquistadores down the Amazon River in South America in search of the legendary city of gold, El Dorado.
Aguirre is a nutty movie. Ive seen it twice and still havent recovered. Kinski famously threatened to kill Herzog on an almost daily basis on set. Herzog grew so concerned about his former flatmate’s threats that he eventually had a full security team around him on set to keep Kinski away from him. The story of the making of Aguirre is as epically crazy as the movie itself.
Very suspenseful drama, but highly inaccurate. One can enjoy the movie, as long as don't believe that was representative of a culture. Some examples There were several factions of Mayan priests, two large ones at war with each other were the followers of Chac-Mool, who was offered human sacrifices and Kukulkan, who prohibited human sacrifices. (You can google the images of Chac-Mool, kind of leaning on his back with a place or a plate in his belly where the sacrifices were placed. The description of the ceremony matches better with the Aztec (many, many miles away) custom of extracting the heart of the sacrificed victim and showing them to them while still beating. Mayans did not have bow and arrows, they used a different ingenious way to throw out projectiles.
Modern people wouldn't survive long in this world. I saw a film of an eighty year old Amazon man climb a hundred foot tall tree to retrieve a monkey. It was paralyzed by a poison blowgun dart.
That ant sutures are accurate. A friend of mine from the Kuna tribe in Panama told me how to do that. The ant will bite, so put the head on either side of the cut, then break the body off, the pincers will hold the cut closed until it heals.
One of my favourite movies If you have the stomach for it, you could check out Mel Gibsons movie about last hours of Jesus life "The Passion of the Christ"
4 Empires ruled Central-South America (Mexico to Argentina). The Mayan Empire (this movie depicts & the least brutal of the 4 as they only sacrificed their enemies male warriors), the Aztec Empire , the Inca Empire & the Toltec empire. All 4 empire had pyramid cities, did brutal sacrifices to their blood gods & Apocalypto doomsday clocks. They were colonized by the Spanish, Portugese & French ultimately winning back their lands that's Latin America. Mayan & etc are still spoken in Mexico & uncivilized tribes still out there.

I hope at some point Gibson directs the sequel to this where the Spanish march into the city.
He's the only dude mad enough to actually film it.
Such a good movie and a great reaction! It's really hard to watch, but not all civilizations and cultures have our morals and ethics. Right and wrong are different from a Mayan view to ours.
Yes, excellent example of why some cultures are inferior to others.
One of my all-time favorites! For a while, a movie very hard to find the physical media of!
I Luv this movie! The music alone is Epic! Mel Gibson has directed another great movie! Thanks for sharing Emma! ❤️💛

The end part with the ships are coming to the island it’s literally referred to The navigator Christopher Columbus
…so beautiful… and so is the film.
I have seen this movie in years, watched it several times as part of film classes I took over the years. Really well made and put together film, although definitely a tense one to watch. Really enjoyed your reaction and how much you engage with what is going on in your reactions!
Their are huge sinkholes filled with water in central America and Mexico. Some so deep theyve never found the bottom. Some with bright blue mud in the bottom meters deep from the blue color they'd put on bodies they sacrificed.

they are speaking real Nahuatl, but they are many other dialects, depending on the tribe.. my grandmother would tell me "Nitlasojtla kiauitl, kema kitsokonia ni tlali, kitlaltoka i'ajuiyali".. "i love the rain, when it kisses the earth, and plants its aroma".. my mother brought her to the city when she was to elderly to take care of her self, she missed her home.. wished i learned more, but have hope now that mexico is teaching it in schools now..
Thats the mexican culture, aztecas y mayas, and the lenguage is nahuatl

Certainly much to consider in our "modern world", as we gaze into our electronic devices. Who knows some may find a new appreciation for our times. *_Thank you Emma_*_ for your take on this._

One of my top ten movies. Get ready to be a chest pounder.
The Spanish eventually conquered the Aztec and what was left of Mayan civilization, after the collapse 500 years before, with the aid of thousands of native troops. These natives probably allied with the Spanish to defeat their tormenters.
Don't forget the Spanish flu, that was the first ever documented biological warfare in history.

A real crackerjack of a Film, as a remote tribe of hunter, gatherers and farmers is overpowered by
a Mayan raiding party looking for people to sacrifice; Thus begins a desperate tale of survival for one of the
tribe as he attempts to, against the odds return too his pregnant wife and son, using wit and cunning;
Two scenes stand out for myself, the mother giving birth alone, almost submerged in water, to which I
have to say Emma reacts with a real heartfelt/emotional passion that is deeply moving, and at the end when
they spot the Ships standing of the Coast, the Conquistadors(Spanish) have arrived and the natives lives would
never be the same again, facing a new, violent and driven force;
Against this backdrop Emma gives a sincere/stylish/charming/eloquent and adroit reaction, whilst all the time
just being so winsomely beautiful; 🦁🥰😘👏🙏👍🙏🎶🎵🎶🎧🎙🍵🙌🤪🍁🍁🦅.
"Come and see" (1985)
FYI everyone, this is a repost from her old channel.

This scene of sacrifices, what an incredible reconstruction.
The gods' response to the sacrifices was the coming of the Europeans.
And yet the Conquistadors did far worse in many instances, with millions being wiped out, even the Spanish Crown was appalled

Very suspenseful drama, but highly inaccurate. One can enjoy the movie, as long as don't believe that was representative of a culture.
Some examples
There were several factions of Mayan priests, two large ones at war with each other were the followers of Chac-Mool, who was offered human sacrifices and Kukulkan, who prohibited human sacrifices.
Civilización Maya de México 🇲🇽🔥
We think life is Tough now lol was Brutal then🌎
Modern people wouldn't survive long in this world.

I've heard tribes also do that in the Amazon
@@Native_Creation very true. You can use army ants. (In Peru we call them sitaraco).

Hello there
Read about the Aztec's, Mayan and Inca's. Not just a movie, although Mel was good at adaptation of the Mayan culture. 😐. Not pig, a Tarpin.
