To the 2 minute rule, I've added an idea.. do what you can EVEN IF you only have 2 minutes.. I used to have this "all or nothing" mentality and it was hurting me since I have a debilitating health condition and the frustration was paralizing. So, I realized I can do things little by little.. if I only have 2 minutes, then I do what I can even if I don't finish the task (fonding laundry, washing dishes, tidying up a room.. ). The trick is to make use of every opportunity I have and to work withing my energy levels. It became almost a game I have with mself now of how much I can tackle in such little time. Eventually the amount of work left is manageable enough that I can actually take more time to finish it. Now that I took the pressure off my shoulders it seems like I accomplish so much more.
I do this too. For me it's 15 / 20 minutes at a time. Otherwise I get too tired!! By the end of the day I've done an hour and a half or 2 hours worth of housework and it does make a difference!!❤
I call it prepping the job and it was a game changer to know I didn’t have to do the whole job at once. I pop the underwear in the wash bag when I put it in the hamper and that way it’s quicker in the morning to do the load. It may only be a 5 sec job but in my mind it was just another step to do. I also don’t leave a room without taking something to the next room to put it away or put rubbish in the bin. I’m starting to what I call job doubling so if I put something in the recycle bin inside, I check it and then take the bin outside to empty it. If I’m taking out trash, I may grab the gardening gloves and start chopping up branches for the green waste bin for a few minutes. Doing stuff randomly is a bonus in my mind and not a chore on a list.
When my kids were little I’d give them their own shopping list with 1-3 things on it (either a quick drawing of an apple or the word) and that made them feel like they were a part of the shopping process and were able to get things and they could tick them off the list. It kept them calmer after a morning of playgroup when they were getting tired before we went home.
I also love doing the “squeezing out” cleanup- start at the furthest room in my house on the 2nd floor - I squeeze out unnecessary items moving closer to garage and out
Another useful one that could fall under the 2- minute rule is... always leave a room better than you found it. It could be wiping a surface, dusting a shelf, or picking up a mug and taking to the kitchen and washing it. All these little helps add up
I think knowing the home for items is key - one reason clutter accumulates is people don't know where things belong. I find this is true for our home. It's become a lot less messy day-to-day because everything has a clearly identified home. I do the same trick you do with food shopping and meal planning - it's been eye opening how much random food I used to purchase. I'm ashamed to admit since implementing this new system over a year ago, we are still working through our chest freezer and cupboards.
Thank you for this great video. It briefly and concisely summarizes sensible and practicable rules of order. Really very helpful and also very likeable.
Yes - the 2 minute rule! I have really seen results with that. And also totally thinking about and implementing the broken window theory in our own house.
You motivated me to go through my stuff and even tho I’m completely overwhelmed and in the thick of decluttering, I do see a light at the end of the tunnel ❤
As an older person, if you see a piece of clothing that you really like and it fits, buy it. Stores no longer stock large inventories like they did 10 years ago. They always churning in new items. It won’t be there next week. Buy it.
This kind of people help me to keep balance, but definitely this kind of people never lived through shortages time. I did. When every extra box of pasta was a treasure. Think twice if you need extra food, or not specifically now when we could be in situation of war, or just any unrest.
Ikr? It's like 2020-2022 didn't exist. I was working myself up to going this route (being a natural prepper, it goes against my instincts) then 2020 hit. How can people be so complacent? It could all happen again tomorrow.
I do the wish list thing for myself, although I never called it that. If I see something I like online, I’ll screenshot it, and then go back to it later and see if I still want it. It really helps with impulse buying.
Hello I stumbled upon your channel and you have motivated me to go on a decluttering spree in my home. It feels so good. Please could you do more DITL vlogs and how you maintain a decluttered home? Thank you xx

Hi Madeline. I need your advice. What must I do with old CD albums? I used to collect alot both western songs and asian songs. Is it better to throw them away or to sell? But I was wondering who would buy old CDs. What do you think? Thank you
