This was a great topic. I am 70 and have done this throughout my life. As a retired person, the dress is much more casual for the most part, but I also love the juxtaposition of of various jewelry with casual dress. I have a nice variety of silver and gold pieces that I sometimes even pair together for a look. (At my age, why save them for a special occasion?) I would have to say that not a day goes by when I am out running errands that I don’t get stopped and complimented on my outfit, hair or jewelry. Even my husband has mentioned it. Be playful with your style. You will enjoy each day as you create something brand new and your “audience “ will too!
Im soon to turn 60! But I still love putting outfits together, shoes, jewelry etc. so happy other ladies are like me. I have naturally curly, still thick silver hair. It always gets compliments. My hair is “its” own entity. Lol.
"Always use your good items" is the best advice anyone can receive, I have a childhood trauma, cause my mum got me a gorgeous pair of embroidery trainers and only allowed me to use in special occasions which means once, cause the 2nd special occasion I had they didn't fit anymore 'cause I had grown.
Oh my goodness! We love seeing lavish wardrobes! Such a great video. My favorites are the bags and shoes. I love the different colors, patterns, and textures! If I had to narrow it down, I think *gtdupe* ’s collection is my favorite.
I’m sure your mom was disappointed as well, I’ve done that in the past with my kiddos. I find the pieces to be so precious I’m scared they are going to ruin them 🫤 and them by the third wear it’s too small, no more of that for me.
I really like the advice "always use your good items". Almost all my life I have been saving my jewelry for only some very special occasions. My mom also used her nice jewelry pieces only for birthdays. Last year she sent me a really beautiful necklace for my birthday and I put it in my storage for few months in order not to break ist. But then I saw a video about "using the good items" and started to wear the necklace. It made such a big difference to "see" that I am allowed to use every single piece of my jewelry or shoes or clothing and don't need to save it for later. I also don't know where I saw that advice but I am really happy you mentioned it, too. Thank you!
I only have good items. I was working in a forest kindergarten, mud, playdough, puddles, rain, paint. I used all my clothes, dresses, jackets, etc. Then direct to the washing machine.
A very personal remark: I think the most common style mistake is to think that jeans go with everything. If instead of jeans you took a pair of trousers in a different material but the same colour, you could well decide that they didn’t go with your top, but if they are the ubiquitous jeans, it works. I don’t think so. The one example you used where the Wrong was a dark red top paired with black trousers and the Right was the same top paired with jeans, the Right to me was an unpleasant colour combination, so I much preferred the Wrong. Apart from that, thank you for an informative video. Very well presented. Love that you didn’t spend an age on an intro before you got the point.
I LOVE that there’s a bite in the bread before you buttered it! Truly the best reminder for me to not wait to use your best things - or taste them! ✨💖✨
I've watched so many style and clothing videos but yours speak to me more than any others. You get straight to the point (thank you for not over-talking each point!) and keep things moving. Your ideas are spot on and help me understand, refine and embrace my own style. I've never commented on a video before so now you know tour impact.
Great video, thanks for posting, some good pointers! This may be a little off-topic for this vid, but one of the best things I ever did for myself was asking a colleague (who had incredible personal style) to do me the favor of coming shopping with me one Saturday. (I returned the favour by helping her out with work strategies). I went to some stores that I had always liked but had always made very "safe" choices or not dared to try things. She pushed me into trying on outfits and accessories and going to new stores, that I had NEVER thought would look good on me or that I could pull off. I could not believe how smart her choices were - the outfits from that one afternoon of shopping got me through many seasons at work and a TON of compliments. She started me on the journey of trying new things and styling things new ways without getting crazy. Still my "style" but just a little bolder and more sophisticated. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a friend like that, but I REALLY recommend it if you have someone who is willing to shop with you, or hiring a stylist if you are able to - and ALSO - never underestimate a GOOD salesperson in a store - I used to avoid the sales people like crazy unless I needed to locate something, but rarely listened to them. After this shopping trip with my friend, I started asking for a bit more help from sales people in-store. One in particular seemed pushy to me but I listened to her and couldn't believe how right she was! Some of these salesgirls (salespersons) are very, very good at helping if you let them. At least try. So if you are not totally confident in your style choices, take advantage of the people around you (especially who are there in person with you) who have the ability to see or imagine something on you or an outfit's potential. This is a talent - so ask for help when you can! And vids like these help a lot too, of course!
Another point, I think that your oversize top worked with the oversize trousers because the top falls beautifully. If it were a stiffer material, it wouldn’t work as well, but because it falls well, it still follows the contours of your body. The fabric qualities are something people don’t always take into consideration.
Honestly Emily, I would have once said anyone with your figure and beautiful face could have worn anything and still looked good. Then you compared the white jacket and printed pants against a shorter denim jacket and the difference is very clear. Same with tucking the oversized top in the oversized pants. A lot of us hide under baggy clothes but using these simple tricks actually work to create a waistline that some of us don't naturally have. Happy birthday Nate
I have an hourglass figure, but I can’t but an outfit together to save my life. That why I watch videos like this. This information is helpful. Thank you!
I read the original Heloise’s book (she used to have a homemaker advice column in the newspaper decades ago) and she was the one who said always use your good items for your loved ones and not to save them for company. I read her book as a young girl, and took this to heart. But this applies to your clothing as well…use your best items for YOU! I was guilty of keeping my “good” clothes hidden away. Now I wear them and get asked “where are you going all dressed up?”, lol.
You are such a screaming source of joy, darling! There is nothing wrong with escaping reality. In fact, I often do it by watching luxury videos like yours. Your enthusiasm always puts a smile on my face. The *gtdupe* is just a dream on my wish list. There are so many beautiful handbag styles, thank you for putting me in a good mood because I was feeling a little down today.
In all likelihood your body type \ kibbe body style frame totally enables you to wear two oversized item pieces :) Most other types would find it much harder or near impossible to pull off an overly baggy look!
Ahh fair enough!! 🙏 I need to research more about kibbe body types. Mt suggestion wasn’t for everyone to break this particular rule, just to try to be open to breaking rules and not being afraid to try different things that go against “dressing rules” 🙂🩷🙏 xoxo
I think that personally I can get stuck wearing the same thing for years, sometimes we need to try something that works for someone else, we should challenge ourselves a bit. Yesterday I decided to belt a dress that I really like and it gave it a very different look, I loved it. I had seen a video in which a similar dress was styled with a belt and it looked great on the other person, I tried it and really liked it. My 9 year old daughter also gave me the thumbs up 😊
Growing up my mother always had us save one or two outfits "for good" so that you would feel special when you wore it. However, saving everything doesn't work either because by the time you decide to wear it, it feels dated or you don't love it anymore.
I always like to use the rule of three as well as the rule of thirds! Adding a third piece (instead of just top and bottom) like a sweater, jacket, belt or scarf can make such a difference if something isn't coming together. Sticking to a color palette has been super helpful for me too. I used to "not have anything to wear" because my colors were all over the place - it kept me from creatively pairing things together that would have worked great together otherwise. Limiting myself now to a smaller range of the neutrals and cool shades that look best on me, I feel a lot more "me," and it gives me a lot more versatility with a smaller number of items. When we talk about balance between loose/fitted proportions I think it's important to consider fabric weight as well. It makes a big difference if you're pairing oversized pieces made of lighter fabrics with nice drape, vs. bulky sweater-weights and denim. In summer and hot climates, long loose layers are simply more practical and comfortable, but I also think it looks very elegant as long as the fabric moves well. (But, I am a bohemian grandmother at heart so maybe that's my personal bias showing lol.) I learned a saying recently, "we're too poor to buy cheap stuff." Our great-great-grandparents would probably laugh at us for considering it a revelation, but it really is better to have fewer, nicer things, and love and care for and use them often. I used to be addicted to novelty, frankly, and when you're in the fast fashion rut it's hard to break that. I gave myself a challenge a few years ago not to buy anything new for a year (or if there was something I absolutely needed for a very specific purpose, to buy it secondhand) and it helped a lot to break me of that habit. Or at least, now I channel the treasure-hunting compulsion into finding really good quality items secondhand. Baby steps right? 😂
These are all great tips. My personal rule is cinched waist, and everything loose. I used to think, visually it's for an hourglass figure (I am very petite and skinny), but also, I realized, I just have sensory issues 😄 living in a very hot humid climate, I don't want anything sticking on me.
All summer I tend to live in tunic dresses that hit somewhere between mid thigh and just above my knee. I've never really understood why I felt like they were so flattering, but it's totally a rule of thirds! I'm quite long of rib and my natural waist is pretty low on my frame, so I've never gotten the other way to work outside of something like an empire waist maxi dress. Thanks for the "aha" moment!
I just happened to encounter your video and decided to subscribe. I thoroughly enjoyed your relaxed way of communicating. The way you sandwich in a little of your life with your topic of style and clothing and look right into the camera makes the video feel like I'm sitting down with a friend and chatting.
good video. my issue is i keep gaining weight and therefore went into a FREEZE state at some point where i refused to buy new clothes because i wanted to buy 'nicer' clothes after losing weight, which was NOT HAPPENING. i looked like a bum ALL THE TIME because there was no coherence between my tops or bottoms.. and then like you said 'it just clicked one day'.. i had some pants that i had bought in bulk from poshmark, and they would fit CURRENT ME, and i went out and bought some tops to match them or even paired together some FEW from closet.. and slowly it's starting to click MORE AND MORE... ive always been in this curation journey through videos like yours for several years.. it is definitely a long process..
I love videos like this where people tell the stories behind the things they bought. We can all look at these beautiful bags and admire their beauty, then hear the story behind them and why it’s important or special to that person, like I love the *gtdupe* because it’s my first bag.
Love your style and your instruction. For some years I lost my sense of style, gained a few pounds and was definitely discouraged…. I am making my way back by honoring my preferences (yes, linen even if it requires pressing) and it feels so good to finally feel at ease in my own sense of style. I like classic, timeless, comfortable and quality clothes…. Its a start!!! Thank you!!!
I really look forward to your videos. You have inspired me to be more careful in curating my wardrobe and to look at balance and so forth I just hope I can remember all the tips ! 🤣🤣🤣I think the balance one is the one I use most and also the proportions. I really can't wear to much loose because I am only 5'3" and it can overwhelem me. But you never know!
Aw I’m so glad 🩷🙏 Petite dressing is definitely more complicated, so give yourself grace. Do you follow some good petite TH-camrs as well? I’m sure you do. I love watching videos from petite TH-camrs because it helps me understand others a little more. We’re all so different! 🩷🙏 xoxo
Aah, thank you for your video! I am a 'first timer' with you and subscribed straight away (which has never happened!) You, your style and presentation is incredibly beautiful, calm and so homely. Will definitely watch more, thank you again 💗
Sure, rules are there as guides but of course, by all means, bend them to accommodate your personal preferences. That is what I always say, in life, fashion and home decor.
Your little dance eating the bread was so cute! Good advice though as well. Especially wearing your good clothes. I’ve saved things in the past and they went out of style or I outgrew them!
Ohhhh, this was an amazingly helpful video, Emily. Such great tips and tricks. Loved all of your outfits. I do really struggle getting my proportions right! I'm an hourglass ⌛️However, I'm only 155cm, so it's not as flattering for me (I think). I can get the bottom to look ok with heels (5 to 6cm), but the top section is always my issue. I have a short torso, but cropped doesn't always work that well for me. My hair is growing back after chemo, but it's still very short, and my face needs a fringe of some sort. I will get there, but my hair style, as you said, makes a very big difference too. Loved Fantas cameos, he is such a beautiful big ginger boy 🐈 I can not believe Nate is now 2 years old. Time flies so quickly. Thank you Emily 💗
Yay, thank you Kate!!! 💕🙏 Thinking about your vertical proportions for balance is also important and I didn't touch on that in this video. Do you know yours? Do you tend to have a short torso, and longer legs, or a longer torso and shorter legs? Do you gave a short mid-section (between your bust and hips)? Knowing all of these proportions can help as well. But petite dressing is so particular, and can take a lot of trial and error to find the right pieces. Sending love for hair growth 💕 is it coming back any different? I remember my sisters came back quite curly after chemo. x
@EmilyElizabethMay I do have slightly longer legs, now I've had both my breasts removed with no reconstruction it makes me look longer in the torso 😆 I'm now looking at a completely different situation in regard to my proportions 🙃 My hair was really wavey with a lot of curls, like my dads was. However, it's grown back completely straight like my mum! No sign of a wave or curl. I don't mind, though. The colour is what has amazed me, it's really mousey like when I was Nates age 😆 It's also baby soft 😊
Glad I stumbled across your videos today. Very informative without feeling preachy. It's interesting to understand why something doesn't feel right without really knowing why. Great video, and rather calming 😊
Thank you so much for your advice. i am at a time in my Life in my mid 30's where I am frustradet with my wardrobe. I am currently trying to figure out how to deconstruct my current wardrobe and be more intentional. Will you bring out a video on colour and colour combinations? Thank you so much, all the best to you!
💕 Totally understand this feeling. I have a series coming out soon about curating your wardrobe, I hope that will help you. There will be an episode on colour. My biggest tip is to take your time, take notes in a journal and experiment with colour combinations in the change room at shops even if you don't intend to buy, just play around ☺ xxoxo
@@EmilyElizabethMay thank you for your great tips. i actually already know which colours suit me best. But I get caught up in trends which results in colours that don't suit me. 😅 I also want to know how to dress more elegant, do you have a video or advice for that? I sometimes choose clothes that make me look much younger and Like a Teenager but I want to look my age😄
I'm really thankful for stumbling upon your video while I'm still working on improving my style. It totally made my day and then I decided to subscribe! ❤️
I’ve watched your videos since 2020, and really admire your down to earth, practical advice and honesty. Looking forward to more about color! Happy Birthday, Nate!! Those two years went by fast.
Aw 💕 ❤️ this is a really nice message to recieve. Thank you so much. So glad you have stuck around and enjoy the videos xx the past 2 years has absolutely flown by!! 🎈
Great ideas and so real. With all the style trend advice out there it’s easy to forget your own self 😊 Looking forward to the colour advice. Last night I discovered I don’t suit white - go figure 😂
Aw thank you so much that means a lot! 🙏🙏 .. haha such a suprising realisation when you work out you don't actually suit a very common colour. Mine was BEIGE! And my whole wardrobe was beige at one point 🫠😅 I still have a few beige pieces, but I tend to not love it around my face anymore.
Thank you for this, you articulated so well when I have outfit struggle and when it works. I think I'm gonna have less outfit struggles now that I'm aware of what to look for in particular. I look for these things, without knowing what to look for, if that makes sense (I'm not native english speaker, so it's hard to explain). This was so helpful!
@@EmilyElizabethMay I know they all work hand in hand, but I just couldn’t master the art of purchasing the right ones. I always end up buying a lot of black bags and other random colors that don’t really go well with my shoes or outfit. It’s the same with shoes. That video (soon) would really help a lot. Thank you so much for noticing. Love your vlogs as always. ❤️
There is a designer in the states [Lauren Conrad] who has a brand called LC Lauren Conrad at Kohls, and your style aesthetic is the perfect muse. Classic pieces, neutral color palettes, with a pop of charming prints and femininity.𐙚‧₊˚💛✩ ₊˚⊹♡
I have a lot of jackets that are like the cream one you showed that was imbalanced. Can you show how you would "fix" that outfit, please? Side note - love the navy cord wide leg pants!!
🩷🙏 I would start by unbuttoning the jacket this will help you to create a new horizontal eye line with your trousers. I tend to avoid wearing “midi” jackets done up if I’m wearing long trousers, as it cuts us off in the middle of our bodies (creating that 1:1 ratio that isn’t ideal). Also, wide leg trousers tend to look quite heavy with a midi length jacket, so I would personally pair with a straight leg trouser to create more balance as well. Also, this length of jacket looks amazing with mini skirts/shorts too. Wearing a monochromatic outfit underneath your jacket will help create length. And at the end of the day it all kind of depends on your own vertical proportions too. I hope this is somewhat helpful! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ xoxox
Oh it’s so funny how we see things differently, I feel like my head looks way too small, like a little pea head 😅 I feel so self conscious when I have my hair up and a puffy item on top.
A very interesting and nice video! Please, could you tell me, where you got the wonderfule loose blouse you wear at the very beginning and also later on with the blue denim? I really like this shape a lot!
Not sure how you feel about the concepts behind seasonal color analysis, but one of my favorite creators Colour Analysis Studio are located in Melbourne. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Could be a fun cross content opportunity for you both and another piece of the puzzle on your personal style journey.
Can you tell me where to buy the flows skirt and cropped sweater outfit? I’ve been looking for an outfit like that and I can’t seem to find one. Great video btw😊😊very informative ❤
I do link if the items are still available. Both of these ones I got second hand from shops in my area. But for reference the brand of the trousers is Uniqlo, and the brand of the sweater is Elka Collective ❤️ xx
@EmilyElizabethMay just stumbled on this video love it. can you link your black v neck long sleeve button top you are wearing in the video. I think its a wrap top so cute Tysm

red and blue go well together if they have similar saturation. red and black can be too stark of a contrast.

Your content is so much more valuable than when I first started watching -- not cookie cutter as you said yourself! Thank you
Yay! So so glad you are finding it helpful. Thank you for letting me know 🙏🩷 x
good video. my issue is i keep gaining weight and therefore went into a FREEZE state at some point where i refused to buy new clothes because i wanted to buy 'nicer' clothes after losing weight, which was NOT HAPPENING. i looked like a bum ALL THE TIME because there was no coherence between my tops or bottoms.. and then like you said 'it just clicked one day'.. i had some pants that i had bought in bulk from poshmark, and they would fit CURRENT ME, and i went out and bought some tops to match them or even paired together some FEW from closet.. and slowly it's starting to click MORE AND MORE... ive always been in this curation journey through videos like yours for several years.. it is definitely a long process..
Come across this video randomly and I watched LYXBAGS . OMG your closet is every women’s dream! Love your voice and the way you talk
Love how this is short, practical and to the point. Bravo ❤
Yay thank you 🙏🩷
Congratulations on 100K subscribers! I'm loving your content! ❤
Thank you so so much!!! 🙏🙏💕💕💕
Loved this video!! And you're right, we should use our nice stuff, why save it!
🩷🙏🩷 thank you
Wonderful simple advice no matter the aesthetic boho, business casual, romantic, edgy ect. You can apply these rules.
Your little dance eating the bread was so cute! Good advice though as well. Especially wearing your good clothes. I’ve saved things in the past and they went out of style or I outgrew them!
Aww hehe love bread 🍞 😆🙏🩷🙏 yay for wearing good clothes! Xoxo
@@katem3961 Wow talk about navigating changes! Aw I think it's quite touching that your hair is growing back baby-soft ☺🥰💕
Glad I stumbled across your videos today. Very informative without feeling preachy. It's interesting to understand why something doesn't feel right without really knowing why. Great video, and rather calming 😊
Happy second birthday to your little bubba ❤
Happy Birthday to your sweet boy XX another great video! Thanks for your time and dedication!
🩷🩷🩷 thank you again! 🥰
Looking forward to your colour videos 😊
Thank you 🙏 ❤ xox
Thanks, very helpfull! It all makes sense
Thank you!! 💕🙏 glad you found it helpful x
L
It’s like I’m hearing myself 😮, exactly the same I realized few months back, probably because of lots of fashion related content on social media too
Absolutely love your content!! You are such a pleasure to listen to and your advice is excellent. xo
Aw thank you so much 🙏🩷 xoxo
Thx you that was helpful. I love how there was a bite out of the slice of bread before butter, a habit I’ve done all my life
Hahahah I love that you noticed this 👀 😆 the bread was still warm, too yummy 😍
love discovering your content here now. lovely work, great tips! I'll keep watching more! thank you!
I just found you and love your explanations…style sense! 😊
Yay, oh I'm so glad 💕🙏 thank you for being here xo
Awww, happy birthday Nate! I cannot believe he's two!! Thank you for another informative video Emily. xx
Thank you!!!!! 🙏 ❤️ time flieesss!! xoxo
I love this video, your advices were so useful :) And I love your style ❤
So glad, thank you so much 💕🙏 x
Yes! So helpful. Can you advise how to create a pleasing balance when wearing a hip- length jacket? What style/length/ shape of pants or skirts work?
Very astute insights! I'm on that journey myself and many of your insights rang true. Thank you!!
You’re so welcome! Glad you liked it 🥰🩷 xo
Great tips! I recently got a haircut, among other reasons, to aid the balance of my looks.
Aw when you were eating the bread with butter , that was so cute!! 😊
Nice reminder video of aspects of style. So lovely to see some of your life (style.) Nate-2 years old! Puddles are fun.
Hehe 🩷🙏🩷 thank you! He’s growing way tooooo fast 🥹🥲🩷 xoxo
I tend to gravitate towards neutral tones, I do enjoy watching your videos 🙂
Thank youu so much !! x
Excellent informative content! Thank you so much. ❤
Thank you so much ❤
Thank you for sharing your great advice and also love your outfit ❤
Aw. Thank you so much! ☺️ 💕🙏xx
I love your simple outfit!
XOXO❤
Thank you 💕🙏xx
Thank you XX🤩
Oh 🥲🩷 you are too kind! This means a lot. Thank you for all your support, and I’m so glad you found this helpful xoxo
Hello Emily! Maybe you can also make a video about building your bag and shoe wardrobe. It would really help a lot! 😊
Hi! This topic has been on my mind as well, I'll try add it to the list for this year xx
I love the first gold necklace with little gold beads! Where did you get that, if you don’t mind me asking.
Great, to really look good in clothes, start with a skinny body.
You look good in anything!
Ohhh interesting I will check it out! 🙏🩷 xoxo
Very useful tips, I took some notes. Thank you!
I adore your style.
How would you describe it in three words?
5:57 you look much balanced with that blouse outfit and the hair in a bun. Rest I agree with all your wonderful styling tips.
Oh it’s so funny how we see things differently, I feel like my head looks way too small, like a little pea head 😅 I feel so self conscious when I have my hair up and a puffy item on top.
Siempre llego Franco, ¡gracias! 🙏
Beautiful cat - and such sensible advice
Thank you so much 🙏❤️
A very interesting and nice video!
I am so interested in colour analysis!!! What’s the name of the person in Melbourne? Xx
Thanks, that was very informative!
It helps if you’re not short and chubby
I think the length of your neck is why the hairstyle makes such a difference
Thank you so much ! Where are your blue trousers at 4:50 from?
Lvoe those floral pants!
Can you tell me where to buy the flows skirt and cropped sweater outfit? I’ve been looking for an outfit like that and I can’t seem to find one. Great video btw😊😊very informative ❤
So good!! I really like that content. Thank you!!
So glad ❤ you’re welcome x
Could you please tell me what lipstick you are using here? It's so pretty
Love the gold beaded necklace. Where can I get it please? Thanks
Have you checked out Carol Tuttle's Dressing 👗 Your Truth??

Great tips!
Good advice.
Thanks for watching! xx
I want a slice of that bread so bad!!!!
Great advice and what a lovely young lady you are...best wishes Jane...North Wales UK
How many tops and bottoms do you think is reasonable to have for a given season (summer/fall/winter/spring all being different seasons)?
What size jeans are you in the Rolla's Heidi jean? We have a similar body size and I am keen to order them, just am deciding between the sizes..
Do you link your outfits anywhere? Specially the navy pants and beige sweater top? Thanks!
I do link if the items are still available. Both of these ones I got second hand from shops in my area. But for reference the brand of the trousers is Uniqlo, and the brand of the sweater is Elka Collective ❤️ xx
A very wise woman reminded me that If an item is in a drawer or closet, it is worthless
Fantastic vid
Thank you 🥰🙏🩷
so good!
@EmilyElizabethMay just stumbled on this video love it. can you link your black v neck long sleeve button top you are wearing in the video. I think its a wrap top so cute Tysm
I wish I had a friend that would spend an afternoon helping me decide what to keep. I am retired and have recently lost 45 lbs. I need help!
