  • Here I share the new Breitling Superocean watch collection.

    Yes, Breitling Watches just announced their latest version of the Superocean dive watch. Is this watch good spec wise? We will cover the specs of the watch in this video, though the answer is yes, essentially. Though, in this video, I share with you my thoughts as a watch dealer on why Breitling narrowly missed the mark on this luxury watch. It will still likely sell though as it comes in Tiffany blue as well as green.
    I'll also mention that the watch looks to be a good value from the brand. The power reserve is less than the Omega Seamaster 300m and the Rolex Submariner, though this Breitling watch is priced less.

    Breitling has been crushing it lately. This is a watch for someone that doesn’t want to look like everyone else. They are stunning in person and I picked up two of them last week. This video seems like you are whining without you even seeing the watch in person 😂

      We aren’t talking about aesthetics. Unlike most, I actually think it’s a pretty cool looking design. However, the fact of the matter is breitling is trying to get away with throwing an off the shelf sellita movement in this watch and charging nearly $5k. It’s absurd. The price is only slightly less than a brand new omega Seamaster, which literally walks all over this breitling in every conceivable way.

    I just picked up the 44mm blue dial, black bezel in stainless steel yesterday, and surprisingly I LOVE it. I didn't think that I would, but once I saw it in person, I had a totally different reaction to it. To me, it seems to wear smaller, the 44mm was perfect. The 38 hour power reserve was a non-issue for me. Whether it's in my watch rotation or wearing it every day, it really doesn't matter to me if it's a 38, 50, or 70. If I am rotating it out, I will more than likely need to wind it anyway. And if wearing daily, 38 is more than enough for me. I agree with Johnp that the white dial, blue bezel is nice, but too much like my Omega white dial 300M, which I also love. I also really like the micro adjustments you can do with the clasp, tons of room for movement. I seem to have some trouble finding the perfect fit with some of my other watches, this helps a ton. Wore it to the office today and had a few people comment on it. It does have kind of a "preppy" feel to it, but I can wear to the pool as easily as I can wear it to work functions and to me, it looks great. I think that's what Breitling was going for, not, as Johnp put it, a surfers watch, but a watch you can, in addition to diving, wear it doing anything in the water (casual), and can then wear it to the office or out at night and it doesn't look out of place. The second hand tip is red, so I guess it's also patriotic :) Overall, happy with my purchase.

    The previous version was my favourite in the Breitling catalogue. Not a big fan of Breitling in general but I loved the prior generation as it wasn’t very “Breitling”. Minimal polish and bling plus the 42 was a great size, wore more like a 40mm. Shame as the prior generation only came out in 2019.

  • @jamieb8046
    @jamieb8046 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I picked up a 42 mm black dial, black bezel with the off-white minute chapter , black dial and the red tip of the second hand. I absolutely love this watch and I think it is unique in that it provides nice contrasts in colors and distinguishes it from the other standard looking black dialed dive watches. I don't think it looks busy - to me a busy watch in the breitling line would be the Navitimer.

    Agreed completely on the design. As for competing with the SMP300 though (and I say that with one on-wrist), they'd just have to not only absolutely nail the design refinements as you said, but also step up the movement significantly and put on an open case back---especially to hold its own even within their own brand with the venerable B01 on the chronograph side. The SMP300 just has such absolute dominance on specs...METAS in-house caliber, sapphire case back, ZrO2 laser engraved dial, helium valve, dive extension, etc., etc. I feel like Breitling would do better to have stayed closer to the Black Bay price-range and not approach Omega range without packing the specs to match. But if they're going to, then let's see a Super Ocean that is really on par with the Navitimer pound for pound...as it stands now, Breitling feels a little lop-sided to me on the chronograph side.

    I’ve been hands on with this watch for a few days as the Watchmaker at an AD that carries Breitling, this is a surprising watch. It wears smaller than the diameter would suggest due to the case profile and turn down of the lugs. The watch is much better in person, I had my doubts when I first saw the pre-release photos. As someone who wears almost exclusively 40 mm Rolex, I ordered the 44 mm in green for myself. There is also some inside baseball on why it ended up with an ETA. I like the variety of sizes, but I am shocked there is not something in between 42 and 36. I have a 7-1/4" wrist, so I could probably wear up to the 44, but I'd even like something in the 40 range. There is a reason the Submariner is considered a classic. Although the new Sub is called a 41, the caliper measurements I have seen are a just bit under that. I'll give another example in the Seiko SPB14x line. 40.5mm and such a great wearing watch. I've had one on the wrist and may even end up buying one at some point (love that SPB297 dial). It's such a great size that I feel like guys within at least 1 standard deviation of the median wrist size are good, and even women that want to wear a slightly bigger watch or are not too petite can wear it. These definitely feel a bit more flashy, but not overly blingy versus the previous one with the big 3/6/9/12 numerals. I do like the vintage inspired aesthetic, but the actual dial space seems a bit small compared to the size. I probably will have to see these in person to say that confidently, but that's how it feels. I will wait until the new Breitling boutique opens near me this summer. Are they going to look small despite a larger size? Maybe. I'm sure there are people that want the 46 size either because they have large wrists, or they are the old Breitling customer that just wants a big flashy watch. That's a tough spot to be in, trying to win new customers and hold onto a specific customer base that may be shrinking.
    I saw a hands on already that mentioned the bezel sounding like a Sub now, but there's backplay now when the old one did not have that. My friend pointed out the 30/30 spot on the rehaut/bezel looking weird and now I can't unsee it. I think the size of the rehaut bothers me too. Like you said, the proportions are just off. My biggest dislike is the second hand, which his again down to proportions.
    On the positive side, the straps/bracelet and color combos are excellent. They look a bit more youthful than the old ones, and Breitling needs that. For my younger friends, they see it as an old person's watch brand. I do like the pip of red on the seconds hand and the wording on the black/white dial model. Lastly, go look up the Citizen BJ7110-11E and BJ7110-86L for a chuckle. At least that one gets around the 30/30 issue with its GMT functionality. In the end, they're close, but just not quite there. I am looking at purchasing something like a Pelagos or Black Bay GMT for purchase for my birthday later this year. The value is there, and the overall looks are too. This isn't really swinging Breitling into consideration for me.

    I do like the white dial; it’s not as busy! I agree with you on the sizes, too; they really could have benefitted from a 40mm. It’s quite a jump from 36mm to 42.

      It’s a good decision actually. 36mm should appeal to women and small men while the 42mm really is a starting point for a masculine sports watch

    In terms of design I really like this watch, even though I prefer the black version more than a colored dial, because it looks more legible and not so confusing as the colored. I also think that with a standard ETA movement the price is too high: it is pretty close to Tudor with the BB58 or Omega with the Seamaster 300 professional but these two option offers for sure way better movements with a longer power reserve. In conclusion a very nice watch and probably something I could consider if it would have a price more in line with the features of the watch.

    I've tried some of these models and they are ok (mostly 42 mm). They actually seem to be smaller, the 36 mm looks really small! As for the dial and dial colours, I'm expecting to see the bronze ones and the gold. The others didn't look that special, but the blue turquoise is much nicer than "Tiffany" Rolex (which in my opinion is an awful colour for that watch - and I was in a "wishlist" for it)

    Great video.
    Loved “unless you are in a coma”.
    Had a good look at these as a non Breitling guy, and they are really nice.
    Not sure about that hour hand (where did that come from re the original it’s based on?!) but it has a lot to like.
    I would actually not say it was busy.
    The main take from it is that it’s very recognisable……. and unfortunately, very thin!
    Have not seen a 46mm and not keen on the bulge that has, but hopefully it’s thicker.
    40mm is needed, and sad that Breitling are too PC to call the 36mm a ladies watch.
    Cannot see how you go from 42mm to 36mm and pretend a 36mm dive watch is for males.
    Calling it a ‘Surfing’ watch is also very sad, but I wish them well with it.

    I can understand the polish center links on bracelet as Breitling wanted this watch to be versatile, from the pool to dinner but polish clasp for the rubber strap option is ridiculous... the website have photos of surfers wearing it while laying on the surf board would absolutely destroy the finish.

    I need your help. Would anyone have a recommendation for a watch? It should have a diameter of 35-38mm and a maximum of 45mm lug to lug, have sapphire glass, 5-10bar, max. 10mm high and a quartz movement or solar with at least 5 years battery life. In terms of price, I imagine around €300. Visually, it should be sporty but also minimalistic. optics such as a gs 263 or rolex op / explorer1 or an omega aqua terra or something in the direction of the Bauhaus style. I hope for a few suggestions. (I already have a tissot prx35 and junghans milano solar would be an option, but maybe you can think of something else.

    BUT, err, the price? More than a Pelagos? £1000 more than the outgoing model! Eh? Was this priced for Kinessi, then given a 2824..? I quite like the design and suspect they wear small. I think it's very much a fun, young, entry to the brand. It's not a blue chip flagship (Sub, SMP etc). For a summer watch, sports watch, second watch etc, it makes sense (if you ignore the price), but outside a casual, holiday or sports setting, no. But, the price!!!!!

  • @JamesMaccarone
    @JamesMaccarone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do like Breitling and I own one but at $5k it's a bit overpriced. For example, you can get a Monta Ocean King for half the price. It has a better Sellita SW300 movement vs the SW200 in the Breitling and the design is so much better. You can also get a Tudor BB for less money with Rolex pedigree and an in-house movement if that's your thing. I just don't think the design and price point match up for this offering.

    • @steelsteez6118
      @steelsteez6118 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't have a sellita... The B17 is based on a modified ETA 2824-2... Even a watch maker that works at an AD in one of the comments here confirmed it.

    • @JamesMaccarone
      @JamesMaccarone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steelsteez6118 The Sellita and ETA are clones of each other. It makes no difference. A lot of brands use both and interchange them. The parts are also interchangeable. Sw200 is a 2824 and an sw300 is a 2892. You would think they would base it off the 2892 vs the 2824.

    John, you aren't alone in the evaluation. About 90% of the comments I've seen on it in watch forums and you tube comments are slamming it. Even Bruce Williams, a very positive guy in most of his reviews, is lukewarm on this one at best. So, yeah, Breitling people seem very bothered by this.
