Since you're smoking from the Holmes line, I'll add that Sherlock would have referred to this as "quite a three pipe problem, Watson"

Very thought-provoking program. Your discussion re-emphasizes my belief in the correct usage of words, which many people don't seem to care about. I might add this: if we read in between the lines of someone's speech, then we can arrive at his truth. I'll stop here. Great video!

Thanks so much for your comments! Words do indeed matter, along with how we use them. This is not a matter of being elitist or pedantic. Clear thought requires clear speech.

I just now was able to sit down and listen to this topic and whoa boy! Does this ever bring about more questions than answers involving not only philosophy but faith, and wokeness (as other people have kind of eluded to in other comments) and many other veins going off in all sorts of directions. I immediately thought, as you were talking, of two things...faith, in the fact that shooting the cat (hypothetically, of course!) brings about the fact (or theory) that some people would swear up and down that the cat was not alive based on the knowledge of what transpired as a result of faith. I could be completely speaking incorrectly here but that is what I was thinking. Faith meaning that these people believe in what happened completely without needing to prove the point, or open the box as it were. But, that might be getting off the primary subject and going in another direction. The other thing i was thinking was about an article i read about the protesters who just received 2 year prison sentences for throwing tomato soup on the priceless paintings and how Greenpeace had issued a statement saying that the actual throwing of the tomato soup was in fact an artistic expression in itself...and went on to describe how the tomato soup landed on the painting in a particular stroke, etc. So, in essence, one person might have seen it as a bad thing and another (in a strange, demented sort of way) as a good thing. Sorry for the long response, but that was just two of the many things that i was thinking as you were talking. I love Philosophy. One of the only college courses that i took while in the military was a Philosophy 107 course. I couldn't even tell you today what the course was actually entitled, but i loved it, and i got an A in it. It was something that i took for no other purpose than my own interest. Thanks for the fun and interesting topic! Hopefully it won't be the last!

One particular issue I have with the Schrödinger's cat "thought experiment" is that we can discuss each side of it all day long, but the truth lies with the cat. We can argue whether its alive or dead or both at once, but all we need do is "ask the cat" (not literally of course) and there we will have our answer. In other words, the cat already knows if it's dead or alive, and therein lies the truth whether we have measured it yet or not.
Another, similar example could be whether or not it's raining in London right now. We could argue that until we take a measurement, it is both raining AND sunny in London right now. But to the person drenched and shivering in London, THAT person already knows the truth as it actually is right now despite whatever we might need confirmation of.
I chose London as a nod to your Sherlock Holmes pipe choice. It's wonderful. Maybe I missed it, but what tobacco were you smoking?
Anyway, great topic; thanks for your efforts!

@@libbyd1001 Indeed! You remind with your comment of this famous pair of limericks, the first by Bishop George Berkeley and the second by priest and Sherlock Holmes fan Ronald Knox.
There once was a man who said “God
      Must think it exceedingly odd
If he finds that this tree
      Continues to be
When there’s no one about in the Quad.”
      “Dear Sir,
      Your astonishment’s odd.
I am always about in the Quad.
      And that’s why the tree
      Will continue to be
      Since observed by
      Yours faithfully,
      God”
If I didn’t say in the video, then the tobacco was Prince Albert.

when one is born with a particular gender (sex is an act) it is not possible to change that but if someone prefers to be referred to as the opposite, it might break logic, but it's not for me to judge...and if I don't judge, then I might also be able to bring about a dialogue in good will that brings about a change....on the other hand, I refuse to refer to a singular person as "they/them" (or a lighter as a sandwich😊)

So... Maybe I'm the only person who exists and every one else is just my perception and when I leave the room they no longer exist..? I think I will stick with logic. 😉. I think a lot of young people are using this radical theory today and it really is breaking down all communication. Plato was right. As for Schrodinger's cat it is your perception whether or not the cat is dead or alive but logic will dictate that the cat is dead. Your perception will not be satisfied until you lift the lid.
