I have a restrictive binge eating disorder that I've had to go to therapy for. Recently I've been working on body recomp, but I can't get past the fixation on the scale which makes me want to restrict my calories. After 3 weeks of no movement on the scale and listening to this podcast, I've fearfully increased my calories to 1650 to 1700 (focusing more on protein) and my body began to shed weight. Wtf?! Eventually I leaned into understanding that I'm a big guy and committed to eating to feed my strength training. My whole attitude has changed, I feel happier, I'm getting stronger and I look better then on my constant caloric deficit and cardio days.

This episode arrived at the right time for me. I’m currently reverse dieting after years of under eating and yo-yo dieting. Great to know I’m on the right path and already feeling so much better
This has helped me more than you know. I now realize why eating 1000 or less in calories a day was never serving me and it has changed my mind set. Thank you.
Great show. I’ve struggled with this some myself. In fact, right now I am 5’6 (almost) and weigh 212 lbs. I lost 30 pounds by getting more active and dropping calories to 1750. I have since stopped losing weight. Going to start strength training as soon as I am healed from hernia surgery, and I’ll be bumping up the calories.

I just upped my calories because I wasn't seeing any results. Doing MAPS 15 and walking 8-10k/day. I got to the point after 6 weeks I was always hungry at the end of the day so clearly my body needed more.
This episode is GREAT! Im a registered dietitian and have incorporated these principles into my practice for clientele trying to lose weight/gain muscle. Finding this podcast/channel has been a God send! I am now 2 years out of my college athletics career, and I wish he NCAA put more of a focus on overall nutrition and what habits are healthy vs. unhealthy. The cameras, media, earning a position and "looking the part" is so much bigger in the NCAA than sustainable health and strength. This leaves those who turn the chapter with terrible concepts of what health should look like and how to achieve it. I am grateful for you all and your intellect- I learn more every day on what healthy strength looks like.
Man oh man have I learned and experienced this the hard way by crashing my calories really low hoping to lose weight. Ended up just looking like a fluffier version of myself but 20lbs lighter. Mind you I was even lifting as well 😅
I’ve cried plenty of nights hearing trainers tell me I must be cheating or lying😢I lost 120lbs with excessive cardio and now my knees are suffering. Switched to strength training and HITT but have only been fueling with 1000 cal or less a day. Plus I work a job that gets about 7k steps per shift. 10 years later, still fat, great endurance, and just now finding someone to teach me about reverse dieting. So much physical and mental damage has been done…
I hear you fella! I get pissed off as well with over 20 years being told bullshit. The endless Mantra of “move more and eat less” My problem is I had a toe amputated, and cannot walk any distance of more than 1/4 mile without my foot swelling up and limping…. Which then takes my hips out of alignment and gives me sever sciatica. I cannot do cardio, running or any form of intense movement. I’ve tried keto - and actually lost weight but was miserable and the diet was massively expensive. I’ve tried to reduce all sugar. But still had this belly and inflammation. So tried 19:5 intermittent fasting and only Whole Foods - still didn’t shift weight. 2 months ago, I listened to the podcast, with Dr Lyon - which said increase protein and do some basic weights. Game changer!
@@Amanda.c91 I lift weights 3 times a week, have dumbells and barbells at home. Managed to do a full body recomp and preserve muscle. As I add muscle, it tackles and processes any last fat deposits. Other than body shape, I no longer take anti-inflammatories and pain killers daily.
After listening to you guys for so long and i just can't rely your information as well as you can. I showed my wife this episode and she said 'oh that makes sense ' Now I'm showing her old episodes . This is gold. So happy
That's me! I wasn't progressing ,stall muscle growth, the moment I up my calories,I'm starting to get better pump and growth, more strength and recovery!!
Before I found you guys, I had lost ~40 lbs with poorly programmed lifting and lots of fasting. Found you guys and have since added intentional, healthy carbs for the first time in years and a better (but maybe sub-optimal) lifting plan. The results have been amazing! Much more definition and strength. Thanks, MP crew 💪
This video is so valuable! I started lifting weights the last 12 months, initially I did increase overall protein and calories but by month three I was tired of eating and began underrating. It effected the energy levels during workouts, I was tired and my body didn't look good, I still had body fat because I wasn't fueling myself for muscle gain. Now the last three weeks Ive been progressively eating more but it is really hard to eat more without feeling too full. any tips on how to consume more?
I've been guilty of undereating for so long and didn't really realize it. Listening to this podcast has finally started to change that and I'm seeing the difference. Thanks for all the great content.
Thank you for this! I’ve fallen into this trap and couldn’t figure what was going on. I really hope people appreciate all the great knowledge these guys share…for free! Thank you for an amazing podcast.
28:36 yep that’s me. Went 1 year eating at a caloric deficit, then once I reached my goal weight, holidays hit and started to binge and couldn’t stop eating.. now I’m slowly getting back into the groove of things.. but I never stopped weight training. So when I get down in weight after gaining 11lbs, hope I’ll show them gains. I did feel tired and brain fog when dieting for so long.
This episode was great a great watch! It really resonated with me because I was under-eating and working out way too hard for the longest time since I was in my teens and couldn’t figure out why. It’s a very unhealthy mentality that I had to work through, so as I got older, I am able to eat enough and see the physical changes I want. Right now looking for the strength gains with MAPS Powerlift!!!
I'm not losing weight on the scale after the first 30 I lost, but I'm losing inches and I'm getting hella strong so I know all I'm learning here is working! I have a long way to go but I'm in it for the long haul! I just bought a body composition scale and i can't wait for it to be delivered! I think it's really going to help keep me motivated!
Always mind blowing listening to your content! Where were you guys 10 years ago?!😢 been listening to you guys for like 6 months now and bought a couple of your products but man it’s hard to follow when I’ve been conditioned to not eat to fast to cut this and that in order to get in shape. How can I break out from my old paradigm to take in this new knowledge? It’s so hard to in a sense of adapting these new information but I have a lot of hope now. Omg I would love to ask my questions but it will take a whole episode if I try to join the quah!!! Lol anyways cheers to you guys for making a difference. Shaking the ground for sure! Thanks gentlemen!
Really nice episode. I always try to spread this mentality to not decrease food like crazy to lose body weight. Few people around me believed and got surprised how increasing food helped in the gym, sleep, e.g.
After getting married and becoming a dad, my training fell off a cliff. I lost muscle, gained fat. When I started getting back on the train, I was on a crazy calorie cut and weight lifting thinking I could burn fat and build muscle like that. So glad I found you guys so I can get my programming and nutrition on the right track to stay in shape and chase this kiddo around! Thanks guys
@@davidjarzynka4760 Exactly what I typed. Married men are usually out of shape. Many have lost the drive to pursue other women because they believe they found "the one." So, they become complacent. Not all because the world has millions of married people. Just from my observations. Anyhow, congrats on your accomplishments.
@morbidcorpse5954 I think youre confusing correlation vs causation. Relationships don't make people fat. Poor diet and lack of physical activity make people fat. The Ironman World Champ is a married woman. World's strongest man is in a long term relationship. All 3 of the guys who host the podcast are married and have kids. For the vast majority of people, becoming obese or even just putting on 10 lbs is a product of little decisions every day to not eat right or exercise. In or out of a relationship that is true.
Four years into listening to this podcast and watching videos. Just turned 50 and I'm in the best shape I've ever been in...I owe a lot of that to the three of you. You guys rock. Can't say enough good things about this podcast.
Great episode. I am with you guys in being disappointed that this hasn’t become more conventional thinking. After a lot of years of hearing the opposite, it is great to hear this message consistently on this podcast and would be great to hear it more in general.
I had to have been under eating without even knowing. Switched to weight training and eating everything I could put in front of me, I dropped 40 lbs in 6 months and got shredded!
I can definitely testify to the negatives of slowing down your metabolism. I struggled with anorexia for years and when I finally went through treatment I gained 60 pounds soooo quick. It has taken me 3 years to rebuild my metabolism through strength training and eating enough. Thank you Mind Pump team for spreading this message and making the world a better place! ☺️
LOVED THIS!!! AND IM SENDING IT TO MY CLIENTS!! I got certified as a PT around a month ago, and the first few clients i started training want to lose weight and they've been undereating. One of which was a 200+lb guy who's eating as little as 1500 and a 120lb girl who's eating been eating 800cals. When i heard their numbers i was shocked. It's been rly hard working with them cuz they feel a bit scared to bump up their calories even though they want to build muscle. I've explained to them what they gotta do, but they're still very hesitant. But i have a feeling that this video will do the trick! Thanks!! Shout out from Saudi Arabia!
Oh yeah !! I needed this. I am at a super frustrated state where I'm working out 90 to 100 mins a day and eating very less (around 1000cals) and still not losing weight or getting toned 😢😢.
Everyone should listen to this podcast, ppl so obsessed with loosing weight and when I tell them to let’s build muscle they don’t want to believe that this is the best way . My clients are so obsessed with the scale.
This is so me that you guys are talking about. I have added 600 calories per day which consists of protein and fat and I am losing fat like crazy! I ate max of 900 cal /day trying to lose fat and first time in my 63 years that I can say eat more protein and fat and lose fat and build muscle even when you are older. thanx for all your wonderful advise.
I want to thank you for the valuable nutritional advice shared on the podcast. It has been a great help to improve my well-being. Additionally, I am excited about the possibility of winning the program you are raffling off. Thank you for always providing such information! valuable!
I think this episode just fixed the majority of my problems and made way too much sense. According to my scale my overall weight is now staying same and muscle going up slightly and fat going down slightly. I'm also feeling way better mood wise too now that I've increased my calories. I even feel a bit leaner in the mid section. Sure it's been a few days but what a difference already. Thanks guys!
This episode was right on time!! I’ve been in my head over calories and how the scale is slightly going up but I’m stronger in the gym and I’m getting leaner. The psychological aspect of the scale can be hella hard but I’m listening to you guys and I’ve been hitting mini goals and addressing behaviors and it’s been life changing. Thank y’all so much for your wisdom and generosity. Much love!

As someone who has struggled with my weight since I was a child and had been stuck in an endless cycle of yo-yo dieting, these are the things I wished I had known all along. Even now, I found this video very informative. I’ve managed to lose 40+ lbs. and I got so used to measuring progress by the number in the scale. I got used to eating 1800-1900 calories a day (despite being 5’11 ~180 lbs.). I recently figured out I was under-eating and a quick search on the YT search bar led me here. I’ve been slowly increasing my calorie intake to what I think my maintenance is and I’ve been noticing results at the gym. I haven’t had a chance to have a scan but I’m excited to get one after a few more weeks eating slightly more and working out to see what the results are. Thanks for sharing this wealth of knowledge.
I have been running anabolic between the at home version and the regular version and eating clean foods whenever I’m hungry. I have been doing that for about a year and a half and I have never felt more comfortable in my body. Thanks for the great advice and programming! Keep up the good work!

I am grateful for you all and your intellect- I learn more every day on what healthy strength looks like.
Man oh man have I learned and experienced this the hard way by crashing my calories really low hoping to lose weight. Ended up just looking like a fluffier version of myself but 20lbs lighter. Mind you I was even lifting as well 😅
Never understood this until it happened to me! Increased calories, lifting weights and lost weight. Totally amazing concept
Great to hear!
The endless Mantra of “move more and eat less”
My problem is I had a toe amputated, and cannot walk any distance of more than 1/4 mile without my foot swelling up and limping….
Wow kudos to you for facing facts and accepting that your previous methods don’t work. Great job. Now move forward with what you know! You got this!!
@@JDAfricaoh yes Dr Lyon says all the good things! MUSCLE BABY
Can you do one on how to do a PROPER clean bulk fir newbs?
I NEEDED THIS EPISODE. Majority of the people in my life who struggle with weight under consume. Now I can have a resource to send them!
You guys always make it easy to understand these complicated topics 👍
Soooo important! I ruined my metabolism 10 years ago by undereating and still struggle with the consequences now
Really nice episode.
Thanks guys
Relationships in general make people fat. I notice married men or "committed" ones are typically overweight and overstressed.
@morbidcorpse5954 what's your point?
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great episode. I am with you guys in being disappointed that this hasn’t become more conventional thinking. After a lot of years of hearing the opposite, it is great to hear this message consistently on this podcast and would be great to hear it more in general.
This has been my most longest lasting challenge. I’m currently reverse dieting, determined to fix this
I had to have been under eating without even knowing. Switched to weight training and eating everything I could put in front of me, I dropped 40 lbs in 6 months and got shredded!
Pictures or it ain't true.. we wanna see results not hear em

Captain is right
I can definitely testify to the negatives of slowing down your metabolism. I struggled with anorexia for years and when I finally went through treatment I gained 60 pounds soooo quick. It has taken me 3 years to rebuild my metabolism through strength training and eating enough.
Thank you Mind Pump team for spreading this message and making the world a better place! ☺️
More people need to hear this message. You guys do great work
LOVED THIS!!!
My BiL was 313, he cut out most fats and dropped to 1000 calories a day. In 80 days he is now 243 and rock in’ it :D
The cut starts at the beginning of April for me. Thanks to you guys I will do my next cut in a smarter way by eating more calories. Thanks guys 🙏🏼
Same here Bro, Monday after Easter : Cut Mode.
@@algon1986 let’s get it brotha 💪
You got this!
Don't wait until the month starts. Start now
I started mine a week ago and was already making this mistake. Glad I caught this early.
Amazing!
Much love!
I found this show a couple months ago and have listened to every episode since! Currently running MAPS Anabolic. I would love the RGB BUNDLE!!!!🙏🏼💪🏽
Finished this episode before the last one... I usually listen on my walks and I took a rest yesterday trying to listen to my body.
This is one of these episodes I’ll have to play on continuous loop…and have my clients listen on continuous loop!
I have been gone for a month with a new born at home but now trying to consume as much Mind pump as I can.. Love this episode as a dietitian constantly educating people on this! Keep up the great content can’t get enough!
Immediately sharing this video with a petite fitness community I'm in! Such great info as always
Reddit??? I’m on there too!
@@lindsaypietroburgo5446 I’m on a Facebook and the Reddit one! The Facebook one is through smalletics but tbh don’t really recommend it. A lot of correcting misinformation 😂
Lots of good information in this video. Most importantly, we need to address the fixation on eating perfectly in order to lose weight.
That why I don't have a scale at home. That number doesn't matter. The mirror matters. The gym numbers matter, the track numbers matter.
This one is worth a second listen. Saving it to pull out a couple of times a year so I don’t forget the nuances the guys spoke about. This info was really helpful.
It is interesting how often Sal explain things through construction workers
Great reminder for me on that first day of Ramadan. I don't know how you do it but your episodes are always right on time for me!

I really hope to help others get healthy as I am on this new journey of learning and growing. Thank you!!!
Thanks so much for tuning in!
I am experiencing the reverse that Sal was talking about. It does make me uncomfy to see the scale go up, but I'm also happy to have that extra muscle.
Great works guys! I really needed to hear this. I am training for a half marathon and really upping my cardio, but the scale has not really moved. So I will be added more calories and more weight training.
Great to hear!

I listen to you guys every morning while getting ready to go to the gym or work. I’ve been training with a bodybuilding modality for 12 years. I’ve heard very good things about your program. What do you suggest I start with? I do a 5 day split now. 2 leg days 1 chest 1 back and 1 shoulder/arm day. I walk 7k-10k steps 3 days a week. I eat 1850 calories 130 grams of protein 150 grams of carbs and I’m 122lbs 5’2 and I’m 52 but I feel 42. Thank you guys
The best fitness podcast around. Love these guys and all the great information and programs they have.
Much appreciated!
I so appreciate your videos and pod cast. I am consistent at my diet and exercise for many years now. I gained weight after COVID which I was unable to lose. Using MAPS program I have seen a major difference in just three weeks. Would look forward to see if I get lucky to get access to RGB bundle. More power to all of you 💪
Great show! I have been using a tracking app for over 10 years but didn’t have the knowledge of how to correctly use it until you guys popped up in my feed. Thank you!!
I feel like this has been me for years! Trying to hit my protein goal daily now. Can’t wait to give this a listen.
My favorite part of this podcast is when you roast each other and yourselves! Of course, the content is always top notch too.
The visual images of you guys pushing out all of your air in the dunk tank is absolutely hilarious to me 😂
This is my exact issue right now. Started a fitness channel this past Jan and have spent more time demonstrating exercises but not actually doing proper workout for myself. My weight is going down but I know it's muscle. I can still see my belly underneath my shirt and I'm like, ":what the hell". lol
Finally implementing everything you guys talk about and as a woman that's tried to diet since her teens this is life changing, thank you

I love these videos. You guys have helped me so much. Im in a cut im only 4’11 my Cals are at 1630 with 120g of protein. I strength train 5 days a week with no cardio. Love this podcast!!! I always say Eat More to Lose More!! It’s hard to get people to understand the concept
The muscle loss thing seems to happen when eating low calorie but doesn’t seem to happen with fasting.
Yeah this makes sense. Sena like it’s about time for me to invest in a pt to get myself dialed in.
This is THE episode to share with your friends and loved ones who struggle with weight and diet. Very concise straight forward information. Good job boys!
I have been in a deficit and my body fat went up by almost one percent and my skeletal muscle mass went down almost one percent based on the inbody scan. No change on the scale or atleast the normal fluctuation I always see. Super defeating, But just gotta fuel my body more! Thank you for discussing this! 🙌
IKR it’s so demoralising
A great video to help prep me for my cut in a week🥲 the nerves really kicking in this time 😂

Guys! I loved this show. I'm an endurance wonk and I love my long bike rides, but a little while ago I realized that I've got to put on muscle. My question for you is if it's possible to gain muscle while doing moderate length cardio at a low- very low (low zone 2) heartrate? I think so, but I want to ask. Thanks. Again, great podcast.
