Adam: “I’m going to keep you fed and we’re going to get you strong right now.” This is beautiful and I wish I’d heard this 20 years ago. I spent so many years (in my teens and 20s) reducing calories and doing tons of cardio trying to lose weight, and I yo-yo’d for a long time. Looking back now, I can see just how much I did to work against my body instead of with it, but since Oct 5th, 2021 (almost a year ago) when I started true resistance training for the first time, I finally felt like I’m working with my body, and I am glad to say I am being fed and getting stronger. And I honestly cannot believe how much my metabolism has sped up! I know it is in large part due to the wealth of information and advice I’ve gotten from Mindpump. Thank you guys so much.

Word. The teens and twenties are like that. There’s new problems in our forties and up. I lose weight to make my legs look great. Now my ribs look gaunt. So I gain weight to look healthy, now my thighs look unfit. So i try to grow huge leg muscles and intercostals. Whatever. If I’m not always moving, my body doesn’t have a pump. I’ve decided i might just have to have chubby thighs or a scrawny chest. But i can’t choose which is worse. So i just look meh.

I highly recommend getting a DEXA scan. I’ve been strength training for 3 months. I started the process by getting my blood work done and a dexa scan. My second scan, at the 3 month mark showed I had decreased fat mass by 0.4lbs, increased lean mass by 23.5lbs!, and increased bone mass by 0.3lbs. Just looking at the scale it doesn’t look good. Looking at results in strength, body composition, how I look and feel tell the real story and it’s awesome.

I love the content of your podcasts. As a physician, I am very impressed with the knowledge and scientific data you refer to engage your listeners to improve their health journey. In particular, I am impressed with Sal's devotion to research and staying up to date on the latest studies. My husband just recommended you guys to me a few weeks ago. I listen to your discussions daily at work between seeing patients. I have started some at home strength training about 5 weeks ago as the treadmill 4 times a week (walk with a few sprints) for the last 5 years and yo-yo dieting for the past 20 years has not helped. My weight has remained pretty steady the past 10 years unless I do the latest fad diet which is not sustainable. I am 54 with 4 grown kids and am now turning to getting "buff" as my 17 year old would say. Or at least increasing muscle mass and strength. I am motivated to continue and am hopeful for some progression in my health. Thank you guys for all you do!

Cardio vs building muscle is like having the high paying stressful job and spending 90% of the money on self-care routines just to survive, or working the less stressful lower paying job and keeping 90% of the money to save and invest.

1.8k-2.2k is my maintenance. I cut down to 1.35 k cal. Two 500 cal meals one 350. I weightlift 5 times per week. The average step is 14k, four 2 mile runs per week and 10mile hike every other week. Never feel fatigued or that hungry except if I have dinner early. Thats how i loose weight.

Thanks guys. Hits home as someone who went through 15 years of an eating disorder. And recently cushings like symptoms with cortisol and weight gain. Was always into weight lifting and building muscle has been the one biggest factor of getting stubborn fat off (as well as moods elevated and normalized). Everything said is so on point!!! I shared this with my good friend that is obese and insists on cardio as first choice for exercise. Praying she takes the advice cause she is so sold on weight watcher's... hate the program.. does great for portion control BUT purported and fat are high points so she ends up eating a ton of fruit ( no points) and low fat& processed carbs.

  • @Chew81

The problem is once you stop resistance training long term, for whatever reasons, but do not cut the excess calorie intake that you took because of a higher basal metabolism due to more muscle mass, you will pack on the pounds. 🤷🏻
It has to be a lifetime pursuit or journey.
That said, runners cannot not be fat. As much as you claim that cardio is somehow not as beneficial for metabolism as resistance training, the average runner is more likely to be less fat than the average lifter. I cannot deny this observation.

I've always had a fast metabolism and could eat whatever I wanted and still stay lean. It used to be so fast that sometimes I couldn't eat enough to keep the fat from melting off of me. I've also been active and athletic all my life. However over the last couple of years it seems my gut bacteria got messed up, I got really sick and now I get bloated after I eat and I have body fat I can't drop, mostly on my belly. Even though I have been eating healthier and I'm probably more muscular than I've ever been through weight lifting and doing all the things to promote mental wellness, I'm still at a loss of what to do to correct my metabolism (if that's even the issue). It's definitely helped me to have more compassion for people who have a hard time losing weight -- its not just about exercising and eating less.

So at this point I might as well not do any cardio if its for fat loss?

Thank you guys for this content. Found your videos while looking up reverse dieting. I’m 42. Lost 28lbs over 28 months but was dead, weak, cold and tired. Started seeing a womens health and hormone specialist. She has started me on protein pacing, carb cycling…. It is so much more food than I’m used to, but these type of videos help me to not freak out. My calorie increase was pretty drastic, pretty fast, so I have gained 9 lbs in this detox, healing, feasting phase. But I have hope that I need to fix my metabolism and gain muscle that I lost. My tests results were awful in how much my body was breaking down muscle for energy. Wish I had know all this a few years ago, but at least I can start working back to a proper relationship with food and now adding in strength training. I prob need a actually routine to follow, but starting with no equipment training like squats, push ups, bridges, ect.

for me, the main thing is not to be able to eat more for the enjoyment of food but for actually meeting my nutritional needs through food without having to supplement. it's hard to get all the nutrients you need on a 1400 calorie diet.

I really appreciate you guys and the various topics that you cover I have learned so much not only how to properly go about exercise and diet but also the mental part of it because that does fall by the wayside of the journey but I have learned that if your not mentally strong to understand what this journey will have you will fail every time and I have been there . So thank you 🙏🏿

Great episode! Adams point at the end cannot be overstated. I was working so hard over a year ago and was not getting any results. But my life was miserable and I was in a super stressful and unhealthy situation. Once I changed that, and moved on I was able to prioritize my health. My sleep is better, but still needs improvement. But with strength training I’ve built muscle, lost 30+ lbs so far in the past year, and changed my life for the better in so many was. The info on this podcast has been a game changer!

I want to gain muscle and increase my metabolism! Idk my baseline calories either I have been trying to keep a deficit and eat a ton of protein. But it would be awesome to know my actual calorie burn per day

Hey guys thank you for doing this episode. It was at the right time as I am trying to lose weight. I am on a calorie deficit and have been trying to lose weight. I hit a plateau and I really do not want to go into a deeper calorie deficit. I am thinking of getting this bundle. Hopefully this bundle can help me get to my ideal weight and body look by the end of next year.

A question that's boggling my mind. Building muscle boosts metabolism, that's established very well. I'm currently trying to lose body fat, on a caloric deficit, taking my 150-160 gms of protein a day, and roughly around 2000-2200 calories and lifting weights too. Lost around 35 lbs so far. My question is building muscle boosts metabolism, but how does it work when you're trying to maintain muscle on caloric deficit and doing weight training at the same time. I'm kinna confused in that.

🫨Do you know how many calories I consume ?! 😭You’re right about the fear because I’m petrified to continue eating the same way yet continue strength training. Like how do you gain 40 pounds in 5 months and think that same eating habit coupled with 2 day’s training will get me where I want to be? It’s mind boggling yet makes sense cause I love my McDonald’s and Panera Bread and don’t want to stop eating it 🤭😂

    • @Stickykobe420

Those are empty calories, 4000 calories of Panera or McDonalds are not the same as 4000 calories of home meals. Good luck!

Great episode guys!! So much bad info out there about losing fat by dieting at ridiculously low calories and throwing in hours of Cardio which is what ends up causing binge eating and eating disorders too. You say it as it is . Food should not be feared , it is our fuel and will help us to achieve our health and fitness goals provided it is real food and not the superprocessed crap full of sugars and chemicals designed to make us more hungry and addicted. Activity is so important and Walking is one of the most underestimated forms of activity for both fat loss and mental health. Keep up the amazing content guys!!!
