As a current student who is at the half way mark Id have to say its very worth it. Many of the things you can teach your self if you're super dedicated and self driven, but with that said the thing Ive found is you get so much support and insight from real professional. The best way Ive heard the school described is that its a school you work to stay at, not a school you work to get into. Its no cake walk school, so if you come here dont expect things to be easy.
Dont come with an ego. Many of the teachers dont appreciate that and its not conducive to learning. If you come, then come to learn and be prepared to really push your self.
As a side note: Im a Navy Vet and so the G.I. Bill covers my tuition. Ive also been in the past 2 Spring Shows and gotten awards both times for sculpture. If youre worried about the cost then I still think its worth it as long as youre very serious about your craft. If your unsure then you may not be ready.

@@mateoscary In my experience its mostly yes. Ive been able to buy most supplies with my book stipend. Something else to note is projects where you have a lot of freedom. For example, in my welding and metal art class we were allowed to make anything we want. The school had basic materials but I wanted to make something that required special materials. So I had to pay out of pocket. With that said though...the monthly housing allowance, if you used wisely should be way more than you need. Each semester im able to pocket at least 3k after paying rent, bills, and everything else in order to live. If you have anymore questions with veteran benefits and stuff just let me know. Yes AAU's tuition is expensive but here is how it compares to other art schools
    Academy of Art University: 23k/year
Savannah College of Art and Design: 38k/year
School of the Art Institute of Chicago: 50k/year
New York Academy of Art: 38k/year
California Institute of the Arts: 51k/year
Rhode Island School of Design: 52k/year
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts: 40k/year
Maryland College Institute of Art: 50k/year
I know it may not be for everyone and employment is definitely never guaranteed but I've always wanted to go into the high fashion industry which without a doubt requires some school time and a degree. The programs and alumni from AAU, in my opinion, are super promising for me. But you're right it really does depend on the person I just though this comparison might help some upcoming students like me sleep better at night :)

Agree. Money gets tight in the city. It was expensive in 2013, so I can't imagine how much it is now. I grew up across the Bay in Berkeley so I lived at home until I could move to move out in Emeryville.

For me it wasn't worth it. I attend AAU back in 2014 for 1 year for film. Honestly for film it's not worth it for the price especially as things start to get more expensive if you continue. I was lucky enough that all, but one credit was accepted. For acceptance rate, anyone can get in if you apply and send $100 and be able to afford the tuition. A lot of my friends left after the first year as well. I learned more from community college and saved a lot of money. Now I'm living in Los angeles getting in the film industry without worrying about debt. I was lucky I learned that you dont need to go to some fancy school to get in the film industry, unless your RICH.

AAU tuition, if you have to pay cash with no grants, is over 100k. If you are doing housing, if they video author is right, is 1000 a month. So for 4 years it's maybe an extra 40 to 50k. So that's 150,000. Assuming you can somehow get federal rates for loans at 4.6 (which I don't believe you can as it goes over max limits, meaning the rate is higher at maybe 7%). But, on the most optimistic calculation you will be paying 1500 bucks a month for 10-years. Pro Art jobs are typically in the most expensive parts of the country, and starting salaries for great pro artists is around 45-50k. So, in SF for example, you will be paying over 3k a month just in loans and studio apartment rent.
After taxes for CA and Fed are taken out, you will make almost exactly that amount in wages, meaning you are underwater or break even every month.....that means no money for food, car insurance, transportation, unexpected healthcare costs, buying art supplies or a computer, or even paying for Netflix.
Remember that 4.6% rate? If you have to get private loans, you will be paying maybe 1700 a month in loans, so in that situation you will be going into debt every month hundreds of dollars even if you eat from the salvation army, and have no car, and never get sick, and never go on a date. And that credit card debt you will be accruing will be 18-15% interest rate.
The only way things will work out is you need to be absolutely amazing, and become a senior or lead, or principal artist at a studio and make 80-90 a year, which will still take you at the least 5 years, maybe 10 to work up to that level. There will be 3-4 years of grunt work for 50k pay.
Oh yeah, and this assuming you are the top level in skill. A lot of people good enough for Spring Show still may not be good enough for a job. Pro Art as a career is wonderful, but it's highly, highly, competitive.
To sum it up, you must be either very poor and get grants to defer costs, and/or live with your parents to pay no rent for it to make sense. This is not an AAU thing, it's most art colleges. Places like Art Center will have you in for 300k of loans, which means you are paying over 3k a month in loans. The very nice lady who makes these videos in fortunate that her parents are rich enough to afford the costs, in which case it makes sense, but please consider all these costs when considering education and career path costs.

It depends from person to person but I honestly wouldn't recommend this university to anyone.
For one, they began harassing me by calling so many times a week trying to get me to apply. My mom had to tell them to NOT CALL ANYMORE because it was getting to the point of harrassment. Considering most students are minors when applying, it's just shady that they're calling so much, even on the weekends.
And so many people have the same issue with how much it cost and what they're teaching. You can probably become a better artist from paying for a skillshare subscription from your favorite artist and learning from that 🤷🏽‍♀️

I've heard the opposite and that former graduates are not recommending anyone to go there and to stay clear off. Many of them have said they are in deep student loan debut, no job related to their degrees, school has fraud charges, something about illegal extra tuition money, law suits, and so much more. And more importantly not knowing where the money was going to. As well the graduation rate is less than 13%, but 100% people can get in, anyone. Doesn't make sense to me. I would advise to do heavy research/reviews from varies former students who have graduated, who almost applied, former staff members, a couple of Forbes articles who wrote about them, and just gathering as much information as possible before applying. Because I've also heard that at open house, faculties are force to (former teachers) only say good things and forcing new students to go to the school. That is what I've read from so many people who went there. Different experiences varies yes, but the majority complaints out ways the positives.

I went to Academy of Art, not worth it at all! Specially now that San Francisco is filled with homeless people and addicts! You would have to travel across the city to get to another class at times. Most of the students are sold on an idea one day theyll work at Pixar, Disney, etc.. most of the students max out their loans by third year, forced to drop out. If money is not an issue, I still wouldn’t recommend. Most of the professors are graduates from other Universities some dont even speak good English. Great instructors dont teach you everything because they know one day youll be competition. At the end of it all I switched careers because of my lifestyle. I could have gone to state univ and not waste all that money.

Later i returned with a more focused mindset and am killing it.

With your G.I. Bill youre covered. The school will pay for tuition fees and youll get about 4000 dollars a month for living expense. Id suggest finding a room out in town for the cheap with a few roommates. That way you can just pocket the rest. If you just using active duty tuition assistance though then you may want to find a VA rep to talk to. Some of my buddies who went to school were only able to take one class while on active duty

As far as I know, the online program is the same as onsite but you should talk to an advisor who can give you more info. I don't take any online classes. I will advise you do as much as research as possible, pros and cons. Keep track of writing down your notes and questions while researching. Read tons of former students/former staffs who has attended/work there, look at the graduation rate, a Forbes story that wrote about this school (Black Arts: the $800 million...is how the article starts), and trust your gut. Please take this as a caution and helping you. Because I heard not a lot of good things about this school as a whole and I want to make sure that you are prepare and feel sure the school is right for you before even applying. I did come across it's website of their ink for upcoming tattoo artist, but sounds like only 1 person has done this.
