    Hi I love this video I'm going to be a freshman this fall! I was wondering if I would have the time to rush for a sorority while balancing school and gym since I heard it's really time consuming and whether or not I should rush spring or fall!

    • @MichelleYuan
      @MichelleYuan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      renee lin hi renee! fall rush is when the majority of girls rush, and all the sorority houses participate. only a select few sorority houses participate in spring rush and the process is less formal. fall rush is very time consuming for about a week.

    Hi, I know I’m a but late to the video, but I’m looking at colleges on the west coast in the US and I’m really looking into Berkeley. Im from Australia Melbourne and would love to go there, it is defiantly up there with my dream schools. It’s just hard to understand the dynamics and what I need to do and what my grades need to be to be good enough to get in. How was the application process and what did you need to do to get in?? xxoo

    • @LauraLopez-wb8ju
      @LauraLopez-wb8ju ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I know you wrote this a year ago, so I'm not sure how relevant this comment might be to you anymore, but applying to UCB was pretty straight forward and yet so complicated at the same time. If you know what they are looking for it is easier to tailor you application.
      Since Cal is part of the UC system you can send out one application for all the UC schools in California (Davis, Irvine, Merced, LA, Santa Barbara, etc.), which simplifies the process and gives you automatically back up schools, in case Berkeley doesn't work out. In terms of grades I don't know how the grading system works in Australia, but GPAs for Cal can range from, I would say 3.7 to 4.0. A higher GPA is always better and it very very much depends on your major as well! You will most likely not be accepted into a Physics major with a 3.7, but might get away with it for Global Studies (please don't quote me on that). The more competitive a major the better your grades should be.
      A huge influence whether you get accepted or not are your extracurricular activities. You might get away with a lower GPA if you are an engaged person otherwise that can show off meaningful contributions to society (very broadly speaking) that don't seem like random things you did just for doing them, but were meaningful to you and maybe even relate to your major.
      And last but not least, the essays are everything. This is your moment to shine on your app, basically selling yourself to why you are a good fit for the school. I have a friend who applied to a STEM major at Cal with a 4.0 and with so many amazing extracurriculars, but in his essays he merely listed what he had already written in his app and ultimately didn't get in. I think UCB wants a well-rounded package. Even though you go into a STEM major and have the brains for it, that doesn't mean that knowing how to write is not important. Grades are crucial, but those alone won't get you in. Also remember, the admissions person can see on your application what you have accomplished. Don't repeat that in your essays. Write something new, something they don't know about you. Write a story, so they can get to know you better. Who are you? What promoted you to choose your major? What was a challenge you experienced in your life and how did you overcome it? You will be asked specific questions on your essays. Don't ramble. Keep it short and precise, get to the point quickly. Every sentence you write should contribute to the point you are making. That doesn't mean however that you can't have fun with it. I was a tutor before I applied and my students wrote me a letter at the end of the semester with funny comments from each of them. I was as bold as to quote some of them in my essays even though they were saying things like "you really are that bitch". I was hoping it would make me stand out. Don't know if it did, but I did get in, soooooo :))
      Ultimately, what helped me a lot (especially being an international student myself!!) was to spend time in the US beforehand. I took classes at a community college and attended meetings where admission people from different colleges would come and answer questions. It familiarized me with the system a lot, but obviously I understand that not everyone has the opportunity to do that. Either way I hope everything worked out with you! Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you need. I hope I could help.
      Good luck :)

    Hii amazing vid ahaha but do u know any architecture majors at Berkeley?? I’m not completely sure yet but I’m considering doing that major and done loads of research ( apparently it’s a lotttttt 😬) but also wanna know if people in those majors usually have time (or is it doable I guess 😅) for the social clubs, parties and stuff u mentioned becuz no one ever mentions things like that and I’d prefer to have a balanced lifestyle more than anything before choosing a career,, would really appreciate if u answered thank u so muchhhh xx

    • @MichelleYuan
      @MichelleYuan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lara! I don't know of many architecture majors but I will say this: no matter what major anybody choose to be, you will ALWAYS have time to do things that are important to you. It all comes down to how you prioritize your time! Social life, for me, is a really high priority along with academic success. I've found that I've been able to really well balance social life and academics as a STEM major!

    • @MichelleYuan
      @MichelleYuan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they can but it’s uncommon and difficult to get housing in the dorms as an upperclassman. One way to get around that is apply to be an RA (Resident Assistant), you get to live in the dorms and the University pays for your housing and meal plan! Of course that means you have to work, and RAs have a variety of duties ranging from being on call to night shift to being responsible for their residents. Hope this helps!
