The One Piece Live Action Proved Me Wrong.

  • Well, I guess there's a first time for everything. (Because I'm never wrong) I actually really enjoyed the Live Action One Piece adaptation. It's a faithful adaptation that creates it's own identity without disrespecting the source material in the process with some pretty fun action, comedy, and performances. It isn't perfect, not by a long shot, but it was a Hail Mary that (for the most part) succeeded.

    This is by far my favourite adaptation of Sanji by far, no disrespect to the OG VA. The heart of the character without the perv gag a joy to watch. I think one good example of how well the characters are represented in this live action was how Luffy wasn't portrayed as an idiot. Inaki understands that Luffy is reckless and simple minded but isn't stupid. He has genuinely very clever and creative moments in this show especially with how he fights or moments like how he hid the map from Buggy by using his rubber body. Live action adaptations tend to not really understand the characters. They only understand what trope they fall under then overplay that one trope with zero nuance.

    I disagree about moving Zoro's backstory to the same episode as the Mihawk fight. A huge benefit of putting it where it was is that we could focus on it. Zoro struggling to get out of the well wasn't visually busy, which helped two things: it made the stuff going on at Kaya's home more tense (because they aren't getting help immediately) and it also let us focus on Zoro's backstory and understand it before the Mihawk fight. If the backstory was pushed back, it would have been too much going on visually at the same time, too fast, and both the backstory and the Mihawk fight would have suffered. Kobi getting more screentime was also thematically useful because he and Luffy have contrasting goals but similar idealistic views of what the world could be.

    • @cosesu8929
      @cosesu8929 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

      Plus, like another comment said, putting his backstory during the climb out of the well goes along with what Mihawk said about him being a frog in a well. Not knowing that the world is bigger than he realizes.

      Yeah, I think the backstory was in a good spot. It fed into the scene of him getting out of the well while also allowing for focus to go elsewhere. And it let the Mihawk fight breathe more. We already understood Zoro even when Nami was trying to get him not to take on the fight.
      At the very least it's in a better spot than it was in the anime. Just a random backstory just slapped in the middle of nowhere while they were traveling.

  • @YoItsDoc

    I think you're tuning out of many of the marine moments caused you to not really connect some of the dots. Garp wasn't originally chasing Luffy just to test him. His conversations with Koby and Zeff about who Luffy is as a person and letting him be himself are definitely what made Garp test Luffy's ambition instead of forcing him our of piracy. It's pretty easy to miss if you don't like the scenes but it's a pretty vital part of the story with them. I also will say that the backstory being interlaced will the well was definitely a visual metaphpor for Zoro failing to overcome Kuina and keep trying. Eventually his motivation to succeed is how he eventually overcomes his challenges. I believe the well is also a replacement for the hill with oil on it in syrup village that he eventually was able to make it up.

    Zoro in the well was referencing to Mihawk saying that he is a frog in a well and that the world is bigger than what he knows, which was clever to include, but I think the flashback and scene might be misplaced. I felt there should have been more focus on Ussop in his own arc. Having two backstories in the same arc kinda collided for the spotlight and Ussop needed a defining moment especially without Jango

  • @sinan673

    Mihawk called zorro a "frog in a well" during their fight. Zorro climbing out of the well was the beginning of him persuing his dream. At the beginning of the story he was comfortable being the stronges pirate hunter in the east blue, not truly persuing his goal. As soon as he climbed out of the well he started seeing the vastness this world had to offer, which was followed by his crushing defeat against mihawk as his first oponnent after "trying". Atleast thats my guess why they put in his flashback there, the well was more like a visualized metaphor.

    For the Marines, I've heard the inclusion of that story was more of a tactical necessity than an artistic choice really.
    They needed a group chasing the strawhats for tension, to move the plot, AND most importantly to reuse some of these super expensive sets. I think its something we should expect from future seasons too.

    I love their addition with the marines side. One of the most important aspects in the manga is that it happens in (almost) an end of era that is so messed up era where everything is not black and white, and all sides have bad and good ppl on it.
    The addition set up really well to gradually unveil this rotten world structure without adding too many episodes just to explain that (eg. it explains the warlord system smoothly and introduce Mihawk to the game) and also give viewers a more balanced view than it did in the manga about two sides (or actually more than 2 sides but we might get that later). Also, the talk abt old and new generation is also good addition as we know now that this is a new era, new generation that we get to explore.

    To furthur contrast and up the praise re: the sets, One Piece is over here kicking the rest of Hollywood's entire ass when it comes to set design. Disney/Marvel especially is so addicted to time crunched CGI/VFX and so unwilling to pay skilled craftsmen that they won't even build basic room sets anymore, they just shove actors in front of a greenscreen and it looks terrible. Meanwhile Netflix out here building an entire Baratie from scratch and it looks GORGEOUS and the show feels so much more real for it.

    With regards to Zorro's character history being introduced when he is climbing up the well. The writers probably didn't want to introduce Sanji and his story while also having all of Zorro's history being laid out when he has the duel. That's why it was included in the prior episode because that context was needed before the duel. I don't think it would flow that well to have flashbacks from both characters in the same episode.

    It’s understandable the series wasn’t perfect, nothing is ever perfect, but it had a lot of heart and dedication to present the story in a new way but maintaining the same essence that made the manga so lovable.
    I agree that they do have some things to improve on such as the dialogue in some scenes (omit for subtlety or rewrite for better realism/believability). A bigger budget would be very helpful for the action scenes, seeing people jumping/flying across the room without looking like they’re on a harness. I loved the makeup on the fishmen, but with more money they could’ve made them even cooler like Thanos-level quality. And they should definitely increase the number of episodes to 10 in order to have deeper character interactions and development.

    For the marine’s story line, I wish we saw parts of it, and then we and the crew find out Garp was Luffy’s grandpa in the last episode (similar to Post Enies lobby) and it would work better, and give more time to the story.
    Also, as for pacing, it was originally supposed to be 10 episodes, but it got cut down to 8, so maybe having 10 episodes (or spreading out the time from those 2 episodes to the existing 8) would have help the pacing.
    Also, the closeup camera shots have to be less frequent. It only works for me in a couple of the spots it’s used, but in the other places it’s awkward.
    I just hope they learn the right lessons from this season for season 2.

    And I don't think the next episode would have benefited from this specific flashback honestly. It needed time to introduce Sanji and I think it was important for us to know Zoro's motivation before the fight with Mihawk so we don't interrupt the fight and break tension

    You are missing the point. All the marine scenes are there so they don’t have to do it during the marine ford arc. They are probably doing it to focus more on marine ford and saving robin. This is for to not show it in season three. I think season two is going all the way up to defeat of crocodile. Season three is going all the way up to saving robin and season four will be all the way to the time skip.

    The fish eye lenses as you said is clearly a choice. I've seen some people like it, some don't. Personally I couldn't care less, I don't think it looks remotely bad, definitely didn't bother me.
    The cuts in the Arlong scene similarly wasn't "wonky", it was a choice. It's extremely noticeable, it's not just cause you're a TH-camr. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to make it more intense, maybe jarring too (intentionally), or something like that. I also don't dislike this one either.
    Also, I think they placed Zoro's flashback where it is because that's where they found the time to do it. For better or worse (though maybe it's mostly for the worst).

    • @Kanriel
      @Kanriel 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, I fully understand his complaint about the Zoro flashback timing, though I didn't have an issue with it myself. Him mentioning it though I can't disagree with his logic behind it, but maybe it would have made the Mihawk fight/episode too long so they shifted it to episode 4 to keep things more even timewise.

    • @lanmandragoran8337
      @lanmandragoran8337 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Placing the backstory in the middle of the mihawk fight would have fucking blown. You don't fuck that fight up, it was beautiful and if you dice it up with fucking backstory you turn it into an uninteresting fight. And you need the backstory prior to the fight or you don't understand why he is fighting. And the backstory is placed down the well because he dies if he doesn't get out of the well, thus failing to fulfill his promise. Yall are dumb.

      @@KanrielThat scene of the well, as well as the flashback within actually have a purpose, especially if you add what Mihawk said to him in the next episode; that Zoro was a frog in a well, not realizing that the world is bigger than he knows.
      1st) Zoro is overcoming an obstacle, as we learn of his promise, which would require overcoming obstacles.
      2nd) We learn of his promise to be the world's greatest swordsman at a time that the character and the audience don't realize how hard it will be. In other words Zoro didn't know at the time of that promise that the world is bigger than he knows. So the scene in the well gives that promise a sense poetic irony.

    I love the twist where Garp follows Luffy throughout the entire season, only to test him in the end. This twist is particularly intriguing because, at the beginning of the episode, there's a hint that Garp and Gold Roger were somewhat close acquaintances at one point, and Garp doesn't want his grandson to meet the same fate. Garp mentioned that he had repeatedly declined the position of Fleet Admiral because he didn't want to conform to the government's ways. This foreshadows the future encounters of Luffy and his crew with marines who won't hold back against them. If you've been following the anime, you've likely noticed that marines like Smoker, the CP9, and even Admiral Kizaru have shown no restraint in pursuing the Straw Hat crew. Kudos to Oda for introducing Garp early in the show, as it sets the stage for the intense conflicts that are bound to unfold in the upcoming seasons. My speculation for the second season is that it will revolve around the Loguetown, Drum Island, and Alabasta (Baroque Works) Arcs, and I couldn't be more thrilled.
    My other speculations
    Season 3 - Sky Island, Water 7 and Ennies Lobby Arc
    Season 4 - Thriller Barc, Shabondy Archipelago and Amazon Lily Arc
    Season 5 - Impel Down and Marineford War Arc

When they first started using the close ups I legitimately thought it was building up to something spooky. I verbally asked "why are they doing this?" multiple times. That's one of the cons that few people point out, overuse of fish eye lens/ close ups.
      However there is also excelent camera work, like the action sequences that aren't cut and blurred. This was because all the actors trained and did their own action sequences and stunts, that shows how much these actors loved and tried to bring to life their manga/anime counterparts.
      On the action sequences, for season 2, maybe they should improve prop quality, during Morgan fight vs Luffy and Zoro we actually see Wado Ichimonji bending like a plastic sword when Zoro rolls on the ground. That shit can't fly by on s2

    That said, Garp didn't do ALL of that just to test Luffy, he was indeed originally planing to capture him and, either try again to make him a Marine, or just send him to prison, it was only at the end that he decided to fight him to 'test' him, to see if he was really on par with his ambitions.

    My biggest issue with the show is Ussop. The comedy and energy of Ussop is there for sure. My issue is that he isn’t cowardly enough. There’s not enough self doubt and cowardness for his arc to fully land. It’s going to cause issues in later parts of the show because his whole character is about overcoming his fears and self doubt. It also makes his motivation fall flat.

If ussop had no talent at all and wanted adventure, Luffy would have taken him. I say he’s not cowardly enough, because there’s not as much of a personal delema that he has with his own self worth. If it’s not addressed a little more in later seasons, the emotional monents he has will not hit like they should.

The small, goofy mannerisms like moving the chair with his leg, almost dancing with excitement upon finding the Go board or actually wanting Zeff's steak were executed perfectly and soo in character, and in his introduction somehow he looked just as wide as the anime version for like a second.
