Thank you so much. Followed this video the whole way, replaced the fuel lines, cleaned carb, replaced filter that had come off from line. Runs as good as new. And I have never once done anything with a small engine.
Brilliant! Had the exact same problem. Renewed carb parts but never in a thousand years suspected that the carb needed readjustment. Found this video by chance, followed it, and bingo. One of the best.
Awesome video! Many youtubers explain one part of the process, but you've shown top to bottom how to take it apart, put it back together, the post-op tuning process, and why you're doing what you're doing.
Watching and hearing your explanation of adjusting the fuel mixture screws and idle screw was extremely helpful. Hearing that you cleaned what needed to be cleaned but not seeing it was a bit frustrating. Overall though, a great video and very useful! Thanks for the time and energy spent sharing your knowledge.
I found it much easier to just replace the carburetor for $13 on Amazon comes pre adjusted and more importantly, comes with flat head screws for adjustment instead of the ridiculous EPA mandated recessed screws that require a special Pac-Man wrench. Best advice after two seasons, throw out the carburetor throw out the fuel lines throughout the spark plug and make sure to properly mix the oil exactly according to the recommendations. Don’t forget to grease the trimmer head once in a while.

Very good and informative video. The slant cut of the gas lines was a great explanation. I watched other videos and they didn’t explain that or why. Good explanation of the tuning too. All very helpful and complete.
Thank you for another video, Home Garage. What you showed seemed like a minimal rebuild. I usually use the whole kit because an aged needle doesn't necessarily seal consistently even after blasting everything out with carb spray.

Nearly 9 minutes of excellent advice! My rule of thumb is if you touch the carb touch the exhaust. Those pesky spark arrestors will throw you in a tizzy if you know what I mean. Happy New Year brother.
That’s what I do to. I get rid of the spark arrestors there useless and only get clogged up to be cleaned over and over. Now I don’t have to worry about it anymore and my machines run much better without them
I am pretty sure this trimmer uses the same engine as my 223L model. I am amazed with how much power this engine has. It probably gets up to 12000 RPMs at full throttle
Thank you for this great video. I still have a question. In a couple of other videos, what is shown is that when the fuel line is inserted into the tank, it is pulled through he tank, and the white connector is inserted into it. Then a segment of the fuel line is attached to the fuel filter. And this segment is in turn inserted into the white connector. Then the fuel line is pulled until the white connector is set in place inside the tank, and the fuel line is finally inserted into the carburetor. This is what I believe I saw in a couple of videos. In your video, I understand that you do not insert any connector in the fuel line. As I see, you insert the fuel line into the tank, you pull it from inside the tank, and then you insert directly this fuel line into the fuel filter. And then you insert the fuel line into into the carburetor. And then, it seems that you insert the white connector to the return line only. So I am afraid that I end up being confused, not by your video, but by the fact that there seems to be two different procedures at work here and there. Could you clarify? Can we indeed entirely bypass the insertion of the white connector in the middle of the fuel line? I hope I was clear enough in my explanations. My apologies in advance if I got something wrong. This is the first time I am doing this repair to my Husqvarna 128L that I have owned and used it for about 7 or 8 years.
The white connector is completely optional. You really don't even need one at all. I usually the connector back on the way I find it but sometime I leave it out.
I think the connector to the line with the filter is simply to provide a length (reference length for replacement) at which when you pull it back into the tank, it will stop when the connector meets the inside hole of the tank; this way you get a good length so that the filter itself can lay at the bottom of the fuel tank. I'm guessing the other line is just to drain excess fuel back to the tank from the carb?
Mine starts and runs rough, i adjusted the low fuel and high fuel adjustment, but it breaks at idle and doesnt want to accelerate. New fuel filter, and fuel lines. The prime is good no cracks and its soft. I guess just needs a carburetor cleaning. Would you recommend just to buy a new one? If so, where do you recommend? Not sure where to get gaskets to clean.
Absolutely. Try Ereplacementparts dot com. Put in your model number and make sure the serial number is in the range it shows for that model number. Have you looked at the spark arrestor screen on the muffler? It might be clogged.
@@HomeGaragechannel i believe i have heard you say something close to "the carburetors you can get are darn near worse then the original"...(cheap for a reason) I just wanted to know where to look into parts or new Carb...thanks for your replies.
I have like to have seen the adjustments after you installed the new carburetor. All we seen was the screw driver adjusting, but didn't see where you adjusted .
Having nightmarish trouble with these 128ld trimmers I’ve installed 3new aftermarket carbs and I must be missing something, prime fine but they will barely run. 3 different units. Doing same thing.
I had a Husqvarna what do you suggest I replace it with it would sometimes work with The gas lines being rotted it wasn’t actually that bad when it worked
@@106harlem I would buy another husqvarna they're very good. They only thing I would suggest changing is the fuel you're using. Buy the premixed stuff in cans at Walmart, lowes, home depot and places like that. Make sure its the can that says 40:1 on it. Your fuel line rot issues won't be an issue anymore.

For confirmation, the left line with filter connects to left side of carburetor, right? When I installed new carburetor, as soon as it runs for a minute it dies. Suggestions?
yes which ever line you have as the filter will go onto the brass port that's further away from the bulb. As for the stopping, have you tried adjusting the carb to deliver more fuel?

You put the plastic fitting on the wrong line. Per Husqvarna, it's meant to be a coupling for the filtered line, and pulled up snug against the inside of the tank.
Well I couldn't answer that honestly because I've never had a high-end trimmer like a Husqvarna or steel so I don't know when I get one I'll let you know thank you

hi. i have a husqvarna trimmer that starts and runs well when i run it in 1/2 choke. as soon as i try to run it with no choke so can get full power it shuts down. how do i fix this?
How often does a kill switch fail? Have two of the 128 ld's. Both have a spark. new carbs, new fuel line fresh premix gas. Adjusted the cabs L& H 1 1/4 turns Neither one will even make a sound to start.
Which line is the fuel line and where does it connect? Do I connect the fuel line (the one with the filer) to brass port closest to the bulb? Or further away from the bulb?
I apologize that I didn't make it clear. The fuel line that has the fuel filter goes to the brass port closer to the trimmer head. The return line that has no fuel filter on it goes to the brass port close to the primer bulb.
@@HomeGaragechannel One last question. The trimmer starts and runs, but will only stay running if I keep it in the half-choke position, and squeeze the throttle. What should I work on in order to get it back to normal where it idles normally and doesn't stall out?
@@timhassett7302 turn the idle screw clockwise about 2 full turns. You'll turn it back out later once you get it to idle. Then turn the fuel adjustment screw which is closer to the engine about 1/2 turn counterclockwise. If it idles then turn the idle screw to a speed your comfortable with.
Do you mean 'fuel line' to be the 'return line'? You begin calling the return line 'the fuel line', as to where to connect the internal connector. Top tube on carb goes to right of the two holes, which is the return. Bottom tube connects to the left which is the fuel line to carb, and it gets a filter, right?. Why does the return line get a connector? Love your trouble starting it!! Been there, seen that bought the tee shirt!
I am only trying to remove the carb to get easier access to the fuel lines to replace them. I have a 128c, but my carb does not come out at all (or not with gentle force. All videos I've seen make it seem like it just slips out. Any ideas?
3:15 pull the fuel line up till it won't come up any further? Or is that the other line with the plastic attachment? Hope this "old" video is still active. Thank you.
@@HomeGaragechannel At minute 3:18 you cut the return fuel line clean with scissor and then insert the original splice / coupler to the end of the fuel line. Not sure what the purpose of that coupler is on the end of the return fuel line. Any idea?
I see, I did not do A very good job or showing or explaining what I did back then. So that plastic piece is a splice/coupling, and it's used on the return line, as a stopper, to keep the line from coming out of the tank. Once I cut the angle piece off, I installed the splice, I then pull the return line out of the tank till it stops. Good question.
Hello! I have this same trimmer which i just bought a new carb for. Even after buying this new carb, it still wont run. I know it does run though because i tried it with the old carb.
gotcha, depending on how the engine has worn over time, sometimes a new carb might need to be adjusted to work with that engine. Other than that, more than likely the engine is flooded from repeated attempts to start it.
@@HomeGaragechannel hello again! I got the trimmer to run and idle. The only problem is when I rev it up all the way, when I let go of the trimmer, it dies. But when I give the trimmer more fuel by turning the L screw, it doesn't want to start at all.
It's the splined carb tool. The opening is on the grey cover over the filter and on top. You'll need light to see them. It might be easier to remove the filter base to see them
I own this same model and mine has started and died this way since it was brand new. These things are a pain in the ASS! My husky mower starts on the first pull everytime but the trimmer sucks, I'll give this a try and see if I can get the same results.

hi. i have a husqvarna trimmer that starts and runs well when i run it in 1/2 choke. as soon as i try to run it with no choke so can get full power it shuts down. how do i fix this?
Adjust the carb for more fuel. This video should show you how.
How often does a kill switch fail? Have two of the 128 ld's. Both have a spark. new carbs, new fuel line fresh premix gas. Adjusted the cabs L& H 1 1/4 turns Neither one will even make a sound to start.
I would also perform a compression test.
@@HomeGaragechannel What should it read?
over 75 psi at least
EXCELLENT Video - Thanks for sharing!
No problem Roger Amadon
How come you didn't change the primer/ purge bulb from the carburetor tho?
this video was shot many years ago, when I didn't have a ready supply of bulbs with me. If I had done the video today, I would have changed it.
@@HomeGaragechannel I realized that bro
Which line is the fuel line and where does it connect? Do I connect the fuel line (the one with the filer) to brass port closest to the bulb? Or further away from the bulb?
I apologize that I didn't make it clear. The fuel line that has the fuel filter goes to the brass port closer to the trimmer head. The return line that has no fuel filter on it goes to the brass port close to the primer bulb.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you so much! And thank you for the awesome video. I just finished repairing my 128DJX , and I think it's back on its feet.
@@timhassett7302 nice work. Thanks for the update I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel One last question.
Thanks for clarifying it. Yes it doesn't always start the way it should.
I am only trying to remove the carb to get easier access to the fuel lines to replace them. I have a 128c, but my carb does not come out at all (or not with gentle force. All videos I've seen make it seem like it just slips out. Any ideas?
sometimes the carb can get stuck, to the gasket, so you might have to use some force.
I got a used trimmer from a neighbor. What is your opinion on older Craftsman ?
well it depends on the model number. I don't mind older stuff, the problem is getting parts for them.
This is way easier to follow. People be doing to much on other how to videos.
thanks
3:15 pull the fuel line up till it won't come up any further? Or is that the other line with the plastic attachment? Hope this "old" video is still active. Thank you.
Yes it's the turn line with the plastic attachment.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you.
@@Coconutpelau no problem
Where did you learn that trick on how to cut the fuel lines??? Wow, amazing! Stupendous! ........................
Thanks for the comment. I also subscribed to your channel.
I love this channel keep up the good work👍🏼
Thanks! Will do!
Helpful info man. Keep it coming. Thanks.
Thank you Phil De Giudice for the comment I appreciate it.
Hi. Why do you put he original Husky weed eater return line coupler back on? Cannot you just leave a cut fuel line? Not sure purpose of coupler.
I'm not sure what your asking about, can you give me a time stamp in the video?
@@HomeGaragechannel At minute 3:18 you cut the return fuel line clean with scissor and then insert the original splice / coupler to the end of the fuel line. Not sure what the purpose of that coupler is on the end of the return fuel line. Any idea?
I see, I did not do A very good job or showing or explaining what I did back then. So that plastic piece is a splice/coupling, and it's used on the return line, as a stopper, to keep the line from coming out of the tank. Once I cut the angle piece off, I installed the splice, I then pull the return line out of the tank till it stops. Good question.
What tool do I need for adjusting the air fuel? I know it's a Phillips for the idle. Thanks!
its the splined carb tool
if your 128LD had issues with bogging down when giving throttle, change the main gasket. you are welcome.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you Home Garage. Ill try it and ill get back to you if it does not work
no problem
@@HomeGaragechannel hello again! I got the trimmer to run and idle. The only problem is when I rev it up all the way, when I let go of the trimmer, it dies. But when I give the trimmer more fuel by turning the L screw, it doesn't want to start at all.
you have to be very careful when making adjustment, especially if you don't know what the default settings were. you can damage the engine
I have carburetor without high or low speed screws. Is there way to fix the boffin down on it
Tell me more about what the carburetor goes on. Is it an echo product?

@@theodoreathome is it a 4 cycle?
Hey man! Do you have a video on how to adjust the carburator from bottoming them out?
No I don't as I usually don't bottom them out. If I did though I would probably turn them out 1.5 turns and start tuning there.
@@HomeGaragechannel alright cool thanks bud! I'll give that a shot
@@chrisfahlbush2663 thank you
Where can you get the diaphragm for the carburetor that you changed out? Thank you
I buy them from Amazon. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it

Do you have a fix for the trimmer burning a hole in the air filter?
unfortunately no
I have a 122cc hedge trimmer and what kit do I get from eBay or Amazon can you help me choose please. Big up from Scotland 👍
I need a model and serial number ,from the information sticker
@@HomeGaragechannel husqvarna hd45
what about the serial number?
I have a husqvarna 343r Wacker it's leaking oil how can I fix it?
I've never worked on that model before so I'm not sure where to begin.
Great 👍 Video !
What tool did you use to adjust “L” screw ?
it think it was the splined tool
I found them on Amazon & ordered them
Again, thank You for the informative video !
no problem
what tool do you use to adjust the L screw? where is it located? Thanks for the video
It's the splined carb tool. The opening is on the grey cover over the filter and on top. You'll need light to see them. It might be easier to remove the filter base to see them
Decent video, but it would have been better to explain what you were doing with the adjustment screws while you were doing it.
You are absolutely right. Thanks for the comment
You should have mentioned which is which on the carb hose connection.
yes you are right
"Mechanic in a bottle" helps burn some of that carbon out. I swear by that stuff
glad it works for someone
Honestly I’ve never seen anyone struggle so much to start a 128 and I own 4 of them.
Thanks for the comment.
I own this same model and mine has started and died this way since it was brand new. These things are a pain in the ASS! My husky mower starts on the first pull everytime but the trimmer sucks, I'll give this a try and see if I can get the same results.
@@presjohnpol excellent thank you for the comment
The H And L screw was out after he adjusted them it started to clear up and run
cool fix
Thanks Diniece Dixon for the comment I really appreciate it.
Where do you get the parts? like the diaphragms on the carburetor?
I order them from Amazon.
@@HomeGaragechannel How do you find it? The name of it, etc
I just look up "metering Diaphragm" and match it up, to the one that came out of the Carb.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you. Having the right name helps a lot for a DIY'er.
@@HomeGaragechannel What is the name for the one under the plunger/Primer.
Which is the L screw, their are no markings on the cover.
The L screw closer to the engine.

What size fuel line does this take?
3/16"
I'm trying to order some fuel line. Do you know the exact dimensions?
For this one its 3/16"
Great job 👍
Thank you Alan Marshall for the comment.
Which line was the fuel filter on??
the line on towards the front of the tank was my filter line, and it went to the lower brass port, which is further away form the bulb.
